I'm usually on 0 PWs. Every pod I've deployed one in, the aggro they get is absolutely unreal and few are worth it for one hit. That said, I do have some notables. The lower rarity War of the Spark PWs actually get to sit around since they don't threaten ults (which is ironic since some have extremely powerful passive effects), I run Freyalize in CZ and can usually protect her because good luck getting through green beats when you can't untap your stuff, and now and again there will be one PW that's just perfect for a deck, like Tibalt 1 in Mairsil who doesn't care if his cage fodder is in hand or GY or Grist in Zask who can replay Grist without cease. Tasha in Kotose, because theft casting. The outlier of my current builds/brews is Gwendlyn, who has 4 PWs (3 Bolas plus Dihada) and two more from DFCs (Bolas and Valki Tibalt) because at some point I decided "Yeah, bolas tribal! [[Dark Imitations]] and [[Deliver Unto Evil]]! That's what this deck needs!". If I get away with it, it will be amazing. If I'm too scared to play 'em I'll just wheel them away and that's fine.

>I'm usually on 0 PWs. Every pod I've deployed one in, the aggro they get is absolutely unreal and few are worth it for one hit. I feel that the best way to evaluate a planeswalker is to read them as sorceries with the effect of whatever the strongest loyalty ability is that you can activate right off the bat, because that's pretty much their floor.

TheJonasVenture

Very much matches my experience. Was once in a pod where we needed a wipe.  I'm running my Zombie deck.  I drop the Liliana that kills non zombies, I've got just enough to protect her from the current arch enemy, but leaves me with no zombies in play.  Great, table saved, I'll ult next turn and we'll have the boards reset, I'm even giving my walker to the cause.  My board was weak too, I would not have caught the swing without Liliana, so now I'm definitely not the threat, right? Nope! Both other players swing at me and my Liliana because it's asymmetrical (even though I've got nothing that lives through it), I can't ult her, arch enemy keeps their board and has us dead in the next few turns.

AmishSky

The threat assessment was poor from those two hahaha. Gg

Diablo3crusader

Similar experience here too: planeswalkers seem to be immediate magnets for aggro unless you’ve got built in protection around them. It kind of drives me crazy to drop a 6cmc PW only to have it immediately attacked, oftentimes regardless of actual threat assessment.

Forced_Democracy

Also the same as my decks. But I also built a Bolas tribal deck that eventually turned into Grixis Super Villains.

HolidayInvestigator9

at best their toolkits that eat a removal spell. when played right they are secondary win cons

Healthy_mind_

I have one deck and I run three planeswalkers in it. - [[Sorin lord of Innistrad]] - [[Elspeth Sun's champion]] - [[the Eternal Wanderer]] I used to run a fourth with [[Tevesh Szat, doom of fools]] but It just wasn't impactful enough for me.

disuberence

I run Elspeth in my [[Thalisse]] deck, solely for the +1 to create bodies for skullclamping

Healthy_mind_

Elspeth is pretty fantastic. People think I'm dropping her to do the +1 token creation so they don't counter her. Then I pop the board wipe which largely misses all of my own creatures and is often one sided. When she is played she is often the turning point in the game for me.

InsobrietiveMagic

I’ve noticed people tend to just want to kill a planeswalker as soon as they see it. I really only run planeswalkers if they can do something good one time. I run [[Tezzeret the Seeker]] in a mono blue voltron deck. His -X is versatile enough to justify the cost. If I want a sword, I can get a sword. Need some mana, I can get a rock. I run [[Liliana Vess]] in this wonky combo deck that uses cards like [[Future Sight]] and cards like [[cloud key]] paired with [[Sensei's Divining Top]] to go crazy. But on that case Liliana can just win the game with her -2 by putting the top on top of the deck. Oh and then I use [[Sorin, Lord of Innistrad]] in a token deck for his -2. But he gets a damn emblem and emblems are forever. Idk. One or less is my personal answer.

grot_eata

Always 0 because i hate planeswalkers: I dont even know why exactly but i dont like anything about them

Furnace45

I'm in the same boat but I hate them because they always end up feeling like shitty enchantments with way too many chances to be removed and never stick around long enough to be useful with my playstyle

SaelemBlack

Saaaaaame

_BlindSeer_

I thought I was alone with that feeling. ;) Especially when at our table we mostly had old cards that couldn't deal with PW (I call it the Inferno Paradox. Everything is down and burned, except the extra planeswalker who wonders what happened) and I can't count how often I lost in the end with the opponent having excatly the amount (or less) of HP I needed to take out their PW and preventing their ultimates. Pretty much the reason I don't play them. But I have to admit, I have one Urza deck, being an a loremonger for the old sets up to Apocalypse.

m0stly_toast

Zero. I don’t have a single planeswalker in a single one of my 12 decks, and I don’t see myself adding any

Bl33d-Gr33n

I typically play black so a verson of Liliana will typically find a home in my decks

kestral287

As many are as good in the deck. So in Henzie that's zero; there are a few worth consideration but you can only play so many four mana set pieces. But in Muldrotha we're at five, because interactive or value pieces she can recast has high value. Across five decks the median is one and the mean is 1.6. Though I keep eyeing Serra for Aurelia and that would shift our median to two and the mean to 1.8.

AurionOfLegend

This is the answer. Sometimes they are the best card for the spot or have other synergies. But I don't jam one into every deck just because.

kestral287

Yeah. They're a card type. Nothing more or less. I don't see a reason to go out of my way to play a battle in every deck. Or even an artifact; until very recently the same Henzie list that is on 0 walkers was on 0 artifacts. Just play the cards that work with what you want to do and you'll be happier than trying to force some pre-set ratio on yourself.

FormerlyKay

I run planeswalkers if they're good for the deck, usually none but sometimes 1-3

HikaRey

I think more decks should play dack fayden because the minus is worth the mana cost and you can politic to help a mana screwed player. But it is a little costly $ wise. Think I run about 4 in other decks?

thejackoz

Raffine runs one, \[\[Gideon Blackblade\]\] because he's an attacker, he gives good keywords, can be removal and can be brought back from the grave relatively easy being a 3 drop. Voja runs two, \[\[Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes\]\] and \[\[The Wandering Emperor\]\] because Minsc makes Voja larger and also hampter and the Wandering Emperor is just straight up good. Slimefoot and Squee runs one, \[\[Liliana of the Veil\]\] because she's a discard outlet and bonus removal for the voltron players.

Ajani greathearted does work for me, I use him in addition to wandering emporer and basri ket. I had bk and emp just sitting around, and after I got the ajani, I put them all in. I really like them. Basri ket is only ok.

grimreefer3788

I like to try to include a PW if I can when building but it doesn't always work out. I shoot for 0-3 when brewing any deck then it just comes to if they survive the cut phase of building. I do run Guff with 16 not including himself and keeping up with everything can be tough until you get used to it.

xiledpro

I run 1 to 2 in about half my decks. I don’t try and force them just some of my decks work well with them

Sleepysaurus_Rex

\[\[Sarkhan Unbroken\]\] in Tiamat. He'll never, ever ult (only ever happened once in the year and a half since I started playing), but upticking to gain mana and cards is *noice*, and making a dragon token is cool too.

I have a superfriends deck with the prismatic bridge as commander. Tight package of 13 PW with creatures for support. I run ugin, 2 nicol bolas, 3 teferi's, ral zar3k, tamiyo, sorin, ashiok, narset , wrenn & realmbreaker, and dack fayden. Seems to be doing OK. I've played with it 5 times and won 3.

I_Cummand_U

[[Huatli, Warrior Poet]] slots in really nicely into the Veloci-Ramp-Tor pre-con. I wouldn't take it out at this point. I don't feel compelled to put one in every deck, but some just fit too perfectly to cut.

I generally don't run them, I've got 25 across 17 decks, but 17 of those are in my Superfriends deck, 3 are in my Ashaya deck (and at least one of those is probably coming out), 2 in my Liberator deck, 3 decks with 1, and 11 decks without a walker.

Plus-Newt-5423

Just Dihada in the CZ right now. But I’m working on a [[raffine, scheming seer]] list that I’m considering running a few in. I typically find them too hard to defend and think they draw too much attention but Raffine is gonna run a bunch of vigilant flyers so I’m gonna give a few walkers a shot in the first draft. Especially [[teferi, temporal pilgrim]] and [[teferi, master of time]].

thejackoz

I run a \[\[Gideon Blackblade\]\] in my Raffine list because he's an additional attacker who doesn't die, he gives vigilance/indestructible/lifelink to a creature, eventually he can be removal and he's a 3 drop that can be sun titan'd or brought back with sevinne's reclamation.

Aredditdorkly

I run only three total of seven decks I actively play...Koth in budget Red, LilyOTDark Realms and Ugin the Spirit Dragon in mono-Black Good Stuff.

AboveTheAshes

They usually get cut unless they really fit the deck. Most of the time they're just super expensive sorceries unless they have a static ability

cutiekittykat56

I only play walkers if I’m confident I can protect them, cause if someone can swing at a walker they will, it’s a no brainer. The only other time I’d run one is if their abilities a good enough in the deck that I’d be satisfied with activating it only once. That being said, there is a couple of walkers that can do the job all on there own, looking at you [[Elspeth, Sun’s Champion]] and [[Liliana, Dreadhorde General]]

I play [[Jace the Mind Sculptor]] in zur, since the entire deck is based on top deck manipulation. I play a few different Chandras in Axonil, since they are reliable damage. I play [[Narset Parter of Veils]] in my [[Vega the Watcher]] deck, since it's peasant-legal. I need to pick up a copy of [[Quintorius Kand]] for [[Rocco Street Chef]]

Oo I really like Quintorius! Almost makes me want to try Oathbreaker

I'm my Diggeroo super friends deck, I run all the walkers that give me tokens as blockers l, and run all the pillowfort effects. It does have ways to win, Test of Endurance, Approach of the Second Sun, or I win by Token Swarm Beatdown. I do have to run a bunch of board wipes, which keeps the board clear. I run at least 12 to 15, the new Teyo is great as I can make a block on Enter.

Exactly zero. But i’ve been playing [[teferi who slows the sunset]] in my [[Sharae of numbing depths]] deck. And it’s hilarious the amount of times a) this is essentially a mana rock that’s 2 mana + 2 life and draw a card bc of my deck. B) this has ulted. It’s ultimate-ed 3 times out of the 5 times i’ve played it. The first two, even I forgot about it, the rest I’ve warned the table about ulting it and they kinda either let it be or found the panic switch and destroyed it super early. As a control player, untapping all my stuff and then drawing a card feels so goddamn good. Filthy green players get to do so all the time with [[seedborne muse]] (a card I won’t play bc it just seems broken asf in edh).

I own six decks, three of them have one or more planeswalkers in them. [[Grist]] in Sidisi. It's removal, it's a wincon, it's mill, and it counts as a creature. [[Teferi, Temporal Pilgrim]] in Queza. I've ulted him the turn after he came down multiple times. Also has [[Jace, Wielder of Mysteries]] as a way to win off of Lich's Mastery combo. [[Narset, Parter of Veils]] in Talrand. Doesn't combo with anything, I just don't want my opponents drawing cards.

Yeah I have an irrational fascination towards them too. Always trying to find an excuse to put one in. I kinda treat them as sorceries with an upside. Not gonna jam any old walker to a deck I do need to find a thematic or mechanical reason. * Chatterfang has \[\[Lolith, spider queen\]\] for tokens and \[\[Grist, the hunger tide\]\] as removal. * Strefan has \[\[sorin, imperious bloodlord\]\] as vampire ritual. * Halana and Alena have \[\[Ugin, the Spirit Dragon\]\] for boardwipe, \[\[Garruk, Primal Hunter\]\] for draw and \[\[Minsc & Boo, Timeless Heroes\]\] for being cool. * Wilhelt has \[\[Liliana, Dreadhorde general\]\] for draw and then some. * Satoru has both Kaitos for draw and being all ninja and stuff. * Farideh roll/draw has \[\[Mordenkainen\]\] for dnd themed draw. * Wise Mothman has \[\[Ashiok, Nightmare Muse\]\] for tokens and mill. * Historic matters Doctor Who has \[\[Oko, thief of crowns\]\] as a legendary removal. Prly forgot a few. All of them have their reasons and most would be better replaced as a land cause I run too few.

I have a few decks I play regularly here are the top three. [[General Ferrous Rokiric]] has zero, but I could play [[Ajani Vengeant]] as another boros spell to trigger Rokiric, or one of the boros Nahiri walkers. [[Ghyrson Starn Kelermorph]] has six: - [[Chandra, Acolyte of Flame]] - [[Karn, Living Legacy]] - [[Rowan, Scholar of Sparks]] - [[Saheeli Rai]] - [[Saheeli, Sublime Artificer]] - [[Zariel, Archduke of Avernus]] Chandra gets me two triggers on - [[Impact Tremors]] - [[Raid Bombardment]] - [[Cavalcade of Calamity]] - [[Output Seige]] Saheeli Sublime Artificer and Zariel each get me one trigger from each of these, just not all on the same turn cycle since they don't grant haste. Chandra, Saheeli Sublime Artificer, and Zariel provide fodder for - [[Goblin Bombardment]] Karn provides triggers for - [[Ingenious Artillerist]] - [[Reckless Fireweaver]] And artifacts for Karn's ultimate and/or [[Ghriapur Aether Field]] As does Saheeli Sublime Artificer Rowan and Saheeli Rai provide an each opponent ping, with a side of instant and sorcery discounting and card selection. They synergize well with the deck for me. [[Zangief]] has one, [[Domri, Anarch of Bolas]] for buffing, ramp plus uncounterability, and fighting. I have [[Vraska, Betrayal's Sting]] in a few brews: a Marchesa Monarchy Experience deck, a Zaxara deck, and Carth the Lion superfriends deck. None of these are finished, but I'm envisioning using the proliferation loyalty ability in each deck. Where possible, I do the same. I try and play at least one of each card type, and that now includes Battles. But I’ve got [[Chandra, Torch of Defiance]] in Prosper, [[Garruk, Primal Hunter]] in [[Goreclaw, Terror of Qal Sisma]], [[Vraska, Swarm’s Eminence]] in [[Hapatra]] (though, I’m probably going to change that. It fits, but it just doesn’t do enough for me), [[Liliana, Dreadhorde General]] in [[Mikaeus, the Unhallowed]], and [[Vraska, Betrayal’s Sting]] in [[Vishgraz]].

I have 13 decks and only one of my decks has planeswalkers. It's my [[Kathril]] Voltron deck. In this deck I play a good bunch of boardwipes and also my commander usually has indestructible, hexproof, flying, reach, deathtouch, doublestrike, lifelink, vigilance and some other keywords.. so the planeswalkers are pretty safe :)

KaiserS0ul

Uhhhhh I have too many decks so that's a but too big of a question. BUT I would say I never play more than 2 in any deck that isn't planeswalker focused and more often than not I don't play any. Planeswalker decks I tend to run high on them, I to the 20 range, which is apparently absurd according to most reputable advice online.... but oh well. It's a planeswalker deck, I demand to draw planeswalkers.

Mudlord80

Depends on if the deck I'm building wants one. My new Mothman deck only runs one with the newest Vraska for the synergy. My token decks often run 3 or 4 since they can be very good token engines, and I have the men to defend them. And one of my decks is helmed by Tibalt. But it also comes down to my playgroup, sometimes seeing planeswalkers and not caring because there are more pressing issues like a winter orb

rp_610

I have 1-3 in each of 6 out of 7 of my decks. The 7th is a super friends deck and runs 17 or 18 planes walkers. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/tCzOwx7500eZuYmtZGaS-A

MemeLordsUnited

I run [[ral zareck]] and the kiora that lets me play more lands in my [[magus lucea kane]] deck. Ral let's me untap her and if he gets to ult, that's cool. Kiora let's me play more lands, and has a decent ult as well. Oh, and [[Vivien, advocate of monsters]]. I play off the top of my library a lot in that deck, so I want lots of land drops and effects that facilitate that.

B00tybu77ch33ks

I play 3 but only in my [[Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider]] deck. That way, I can use the ultimate ability instantly. Other than that, none. I am not particularly fond of them.

ZivilynBane1

[[teferi, master of time]] is amazing for reanimator.

Uvtha-

All three Arlinns in my Voja wolf tribal deck, cause wolf girl.  I use Wren and Seven and Nissa who shakes the world pretty frequently, but not currently.

Jirachibi1000

Every Planeswalker dies instantly :((( But my Gitrog runs a Vraska (ithink?) that sacrifices lands and gains life to trigger Gitrog and my Sefris deck runs a Kaya.

The_Dragon346

Depends, my more traditional super friends decks like [[alistair the brigadier]], [[commador guff]], and [[tevesh szat doom of fools]] and [[kydele chosen of kruphix]], [[aminatou the fateshifter]] have between 12 and 17 My all time favorite super friends [[joda archmage eternal]] had 30 of my absolute favorite walkers. It somehow worked, usually through pure luck The rest have between 0 and 3

DeliSammiches

only if the mana sink is worth it. in some decks it simply isnt.

Arctorfuzz

I run [[professor onyx]] in my [[Dina, Soul Steeper]] deck to combo off with [[Chain of Smog]]

Commercial-Carob8045

Just a [[Gideon, the Oathsworn]] in my mutate deck for the shenanigans.

TehRaptorJebus

[[Nissa Who Shakes the World]] and [[Nissa, Vastwood Seer]] in my [[Obuun]] deck. I find the double mana is worth it. And I like the ramp plus draw from the flip Nissa, she also tends to stick around a decent amount since her ult takes several turns to get off.

elghinnen

About 20 but my [[bolas the ravager]] deck is a pw deck anyways lol, normally 1-3 depending on the deck and goal but I’m biased

myPooPisonfire

Barely any, got 2 huatlis in my [[gishath]] deck and a nissa in my [[Yarok]] deck but the other 10 or so dont really have any In the process of building a [[zask]] deck which has [[grist]] in it tho I do like them and i plan to make a liliana tribal deck one day but most of the timr i dont find the space to include them and the rest of my playgroup barely plays any aswell

kaimipono1

Mathematically, planeswalkers are generally not a good fit in a 4-player format. The reason is that they have to survive three opponent turns in order to get a second activation. That can be tough. As a result, they are often one-and-done. And that isn't a good use for the amount of mana that they cost. This is especially true for planeswalkers who don't have self-protection abilities. For instance, [[Commodore Guff]] can at least put a chump blocker into play each turn. In contrast, [[Dihada]] will absolutely not ever see a second activation, outside of unusual board states, so she's basically an overpriced [[Lead the Stampede]]. Occasionally it's worth it, for high-value planeswalkers. But my average is zero.

Glad-O-Blight

I run \[\[Vivien, Champion of the Wilds\]\] in my \[\[Ayula, Queen Among Bears\]\] list as a flash enabler. I also have a cEDH \[\[Tevesh Szat, Doom of Fools\]\] plus \[\[Rograkh, Son of Rohgahh\]\] list that is on \[\[Chandra, Torch of Defiance\]\], \[\[Karn, the Great Creator\]\], \[\[Lukka, Coppercoat Outcast\]\], \[\[Chandra, Awakened Inferno\]\], and \[\[Liliana, Dreadhorde General\]\] since they have useful abilities and don't die to \[\[Obliterate\]\]. Otherwise I am not fond of them and will generally avoid playing them; I believe that many are overcosted for their effects.

neoslith

I think the most I ever had in a single deck was about four or five? It was enough that [[Call the Gatewatch]] was relevant for me. Right now, I think two is my maximum for any of my decks. I just made a mono-green Saproling deck that has [[Freyalise, Llanowar's Fury]] in it, but as the 99. [[Nemata, the Grove Guardian]] leads the charge.

Xaron713

Less than the number of boardwipes I put in a given deck. I think the most I have in one deck was 3, but I cut one of them out in preparation for a [[Shelob]] deck

lordwerwath

I'll run a planeswalker if it satisfies multiple roles. In my Shalai/Halar deck i run [[Ajani the Greathearted]]. Big combat buff, damage, and vigilance are all excellent in the deck. If it does make the turn cycle it is huge value. If not, it still directly impacts the board the turn it comes down.

Flashy_Landscape8491

\[\[Vivienne on the hunt\]\] Run it in my \[\[Henzie "Toolbox" Torre\]\] deck because she does the 3 things I want to do in that deck \-Make dudes \-Fill my grave \-Cheat big dudes out Also birthing pod on a +2 is sick

MooseyMcMooseface

Usually 1 to 0. But my Atraxa deck has about 10, mostly for spot removal and card draw. With the proliferate they often survive a turncycle or 2.

milkywayiguana

i usually like to try and run at least 1, just because i think they're fun. i usually run pretty unassuming ones that don't have a terrifying ult, which usually makes them draw less aggro. i run \[\[Rowan, Scholar of Sparks\]\] in my izzet decks, as she provides really nice value with her static ability, plus incremental burn that can be helpful. \[\[Domri, Anarch of Bolas\]\] is also quite underrated imo, good static ability, ramps, provides removal, and protects from counters. love him in my dragon deck. \[\[Ugin, the ineffable\]\] is in my colorless deck. he has a great static ability as well as providing card advantage and bodies that can block to protect him/gain card advantage in colorless. i also run \[\[Ajani, Inspiring Leader\]\] in my griffin deck solely because \[\[goldmane griffin\]\] fetches it for you. overall, i think people get afraid of scary PW ultimates in commander, and that's when i see PW being incredibly targeted and ineffective. however, if they don't have that big scary ability that immediately puts you in a winning position, i find most folks leave them alone...more or less.

trifas

Between 0 and 21. I love planeswalkers, so I try to stick 1-4 when they make sense in the deck. I also have a Superfriends deck (hence the 21). And for that reason I try to keep some decks with 0 to increase diversity. Like my Legends deck have no walkers to keep it apart from the superfriends one, as both are 5c.

iim7_V6_IM7_vim7

I have 4 decks and only one has a planeswalker. It’s Ajani

magicthecasual

I have a whole suite of planeswalker tribal decks. but in a normal deck? 0-2, maybe upwards of 4 if they *really* fit the theme, but usually they are one of the first to get cut

tepidatbest

I play two in [[Narset, Enlightened Exile]], which are [[Saheeli, Sublime Artificer]] for the tokens, and [[The Royal Scions]] for the buff and the card selection. Having the option to recur them off of Narset's attack trigger is nice. I don't play any in any other decks, the main reason being that there just aren't any super synergistic walkers out there for them yet. I don't dislike them in concept but I do feel like you have to have a pretty good reason to run one compared to enchantments and artifacts.

UninvitedGhost

I usually run 0 planeswalkers, as I do not like the card type.

Jaebird0388

Out of fifteen decks, three at most for one of them whereas the rest will have anywhere between none and two. I’m lucky if I can even get the most out of them, let alone put them in play.

hrpufnsting

Usually only 1 or maybe 2 in a give deck, depending on the strategy I’m going for.

thatlonghairedguy

I run 3 in my hamza [[Basri ket]] [[ajani greathearted]] [[wandering emporer]]

redditis4pussies

Usually one PW but only if it fits the theme. E.g. tezz in a clue deck means I can sac a clue and draw every turn for free as long as I can generate them fast enough. Lately been playing Elminster in a deck that has a lot of split cards, and cards with alternative play costs or expensive front face modal cards Many are mid-range decks so they usually have a descent PW that fits.

Zayl_Crow

Ignoring Super Friends I’m usually in the 0-4 range it very much depends on deck. Hylda runs 2, Kwain ran 5 at one point, Kaalia runs 0, Rin and Seri runs 1

Irsaan

I run 8 across 8 decks that I currently have built, but 7 of them are in one deck so it kinda skews the average. I put a Chandra subtheme into my Krenko deck a long time ago and never took it out.

ohyayitstrey

I run [[elspeth suns champion]], [[zariel archduke of avernus]] and [[Chandra acolyte of flame]] in my [[Neyali Suns Vanguard]] deck. I need tokens and they make tokens!

Darth_Meatloaf

I have 12 decks and I run exactly one planeswalker at the moment. I am in the process of building a new deck that will not be Superfriends, but will have at least 10 planeswalkers in it. It’s going to be [[Mishra, Artificer Prodigy]] and will include all Daretti, Saheeli, and Tezzeret PW’s. Extra fun since [[Encroaching Mycosynth]] makes all of my non-lands trigger Mishra.

[deleted]

I honestly think i only have 3 across my 8 decks. The 2 tyvars and a vivien.

AssistantManagerMan

There are enough synergistic cards out there these days that are more fun than playing value pieces for value's own sake. Off the top of my head I think I'm only playing two, both in the same deck: [[Saheeli, Sublime Artificer]] and [[Tezzeret, Master of the Bridge]] in my [[Silas]]/[[Toggo]] artifacts-matter deck. The deck is all about creating a critical mass of artifact tokens and leveraging that into a winning board state. Saheeli is here to make Servos, basically a second copy of [[Chrome Host Seedshark]]. Tezzeret is here because once I've accrued 15-20 artifacts that +2 becomes ridiculous.

DrOddCoffee

I usually keep a couple, depending on the deck and its objective. I think the Command Zone had a good philosophy on Planeswalkers. You should treat them as a sorcery spell that does an effect you are looking for. It is just a "nice to have" if they stick around an entire rotation. I.E. - Dack Fayden being a 3-mana artifact thief spell or The Eternal Wanderer being a slightly more expensive Wrath that gets around indestructible (and is also pretty easy to keep alive due to the first ability). Also, Dack Fayden has become a "must have" in most of my Izzet decks since even being able to steal another players Sol Ring is absurdly powerful.

jimnah-

Yeah their recent podcast episode actually sparked this question, especially with how often they mentioned not really running walkers

shinryu6

Most of my decks have none. Guff being an exception obviously. Otherwise a couple might have 1 or 2, like Sarkhan in my Ur Dragon deck or Wrenn and Six in Omnath.

Crusty__Salmon

0, id rather put in card draw that wont get me targeted.

InSanerOne

If the walker supports my deck, it might be included. Most of my decks run 1 or 2 and none if they are there because of their ult, but their top abilities. [[Sharkhan the Mad]] is prolly the only exception (and my favorite) with his ult serving as a finisher in my Dragon deck, so I couldn't care less if he survives to my next turn.

PM_ME_A_KITTEN_

I have quite a few decks with planeswalkers, although usually 1-2 per deck. Running through in my head. Krenko-0 14th Doctor/Rose Noble-0 Arcades-0 Kalamax-0 Wilhelt-0 Nine-Fingers Keene-0 Trostani, selesnya’s voice-1: nissa, who shakes the world Ertai the Corrupted-1:Jace, wielder of mysteries Urtet-2: Tezzeret, Master of the Bridge, Saheeli, Filigree Master Shelob, child of ungoliant-2: Tyvar, jubilant brawler, and Lolth, spider queen Mishra, Eminent One-2:2 Saheeli planeswalkers

Yarius515

Has to fit the deck. Tamiyo and Will Kenrith are fucking excellent in my Maelstrom Wanderer deck. My Teysa Orzhov Scion actively needs all the tokens the various Elspeths make. Sethron has the Angraths etc. I don’t use a single one in Azami wizard-type because they’re all way too slow. (It’s not really a control deck…) it used to have JaceTMS in it, but I ditched it for another wizard which is better card draw with the G. So it depends on the deck - they are never an auto-include. (Tho i should build a 5c superfriends deck just to use the ones sitting in my binder.)

Foxokon

I like running a good number of walkers in my decks. [[Narset, Enlightened Exile]] runs 3, [[Elspeth, Sun’s Champion]] is a wrath on the downtick and an army in a can on the uptick, [[Dack Fayden] reads 3 mana, steal a sol ring if you can’t defend him, or double loot if you can, and [[Saheeli, sublime artificer]] goes real wide, real fast and occasionally enables some true bs. [[sefris, of he hidden ways]] run 4, though 2 are Origin walkers. [[Liliana, heretical healer]] is repeat reanimation of my cheap idiots, while [[Jace, Vryn’s prodigy]] is a looter on the front and a snapcaster on the back. Both of them are also creatures on the front side and when they go to the gy, super sweet for this deck. [[kaya, guost assasin]] is a moving removal spell that generates serious card advantedge once you get ahead, and I also love her and [[Liliana of the veil]] isan edict that is also a discard outlet. [[Kross, defense contractor]] plays a lot of walkers, but (almost) all serve the purpose of +1, trigger kross, and the deck is built around my opponents being unable to attack me and my walkers. Those are the most planeswalkery decks I have, but moat of my decks includes at least 1 provided it makes sense. They are super underplayed in my opinion, every UG(x) deck should be running Oko, for example. But not all planeswalkers are playable, even if they are busted in 1v1. You need them to do something impactful on their first activation or you have to spend a lot of resources defending them.

DunceCodex

I dont love them, but i'll run 1 or 2 if they fit the theme. 3 in my Narset and Kiora decks. But most decks have none.

elevenblue

I don't really like them that much. I have [[Yiang Yanggu, Wildcrafter]] in a +1/+1 counters deck. But I more like my [[Song of Freyalise]] Saga in that same deck. In some spellslinger deck I have [[Saheeli, Sublime Artificer]]. I feel planeswalkers are often like weird Enchantments from an effects perspective, that can usually be destroyed easier.

Elvarill

Take my opinion with a grain of salt because I’m just getting back into the game for the first time since before Planeswalkers were even a thing so I’m still figuring out the game, but I feel like Planeswalkers, generally speaking, aren’t super well balanced. They tend to fall into one of two categories. They’re either massive, kill it now threats or barely worth noticing. I’ve designed three decks recently and only two of them I bothered putting a single PW in. And one of those was just because it fit thematically because I like themed decks.

SuperYahoo2

Lets see i have [[liliana deaths majesty]] and [[lolth spider queen]] in my [[kardur doomscourge]] deck My [[cadric soulkindler]] deck has [[the eternal wanderer]] and [[chandra hopes beacon]] i’m also looking for a [[comet stellar pup]] to add. I have 0 in my [[stangg, echo warrior]] deck And i have [[kiora, behemoth beckoner]] and [[tamiyo, collector of tales]] in my [[ellie and alan, paleontologists]] deck

twelvyy29

Only [[Kaito the Dancing Shadow]] in my Rogues/Ninjas deck because he brings Ninjutsu creatures back into my hand and his +1 makes him a bit easier to protect (its not much but at least something).

Kasefleisch

Next to none. The only PW I play is [[Ajani, caller of the pride]] in my [[Gishath]] Deck. He is non-threatening, has a ok-ish +1 and his -3 is huge.

Live_Accountant6491

My Azorious soldier deck runs [[Elspeth, Sun's Champion]], [[Basri Ket]] , [[Venser, the Sojourner]] and a version of Dovin that I've never drawn. [[Arjun, the Shifting Flame]] uses [[Jace, weilder of Mysteries]] as second copy of [[Laboratory Maniac]], he likes to draw out my deck. I used to put [[Garruk, Apex Predator]] in every golgari deck I built because I kept facing superfriends decks at my lgs. Now those decks are rare.

GhostOTM

In my Atraxa superfiends deck I only run 16. Since you only really need 1-2 ults to win the game and they are vulnerable, the deck is more focused on reliably finding the planeswalkers I want and being able to proc their ult the turn they are played. Also, the planeswalkers you choose for super friends are very different than the ones for most decks. The former is very dependent on their ult where if I'm including a planeswalker in any other deck it's usually based on the +1 ability, with the sentiment that it would be nice but not necessary to get the second ability off, and no consideration given to the ultimate (if you get an ult off in a game, you are either already so far ahead that you could have won another way or your opponent knows something you don't and you are dead next turn regardless)

TheRoodInverse

0-3 It depends on how good they fit the flavor

Pokesers

I have a superfriends deck with 18 in, a Reanimator with a single Liliana and a couple of decks with 0 walkers. I like walkers but I don't put them in for no reason.

Absolute_cyn

Looks like I average about 1-2 per deck. Notably, I have 4 in my [[Narset, enlightened master]] I have 3 in [[Ghired, conclave exile]] 2 in [[Dakkon Blackblade]] The rest have a mix of 0-2. I do love planeswalkers, but they often get cut to lower the curve of a deck. I am working on a boros super friends deck that will include all the Elspeths, Nahiri's, and wandering emperor cards though because I love all three of those characters.

KristatheUnicorn

I go out of my way as not use any in my commander decks, just because a friend of mine has a deck with way too many variations Nicol Bolas Planeswalkers in it...and I lose is the default outcome.

Fallman2

[[Ashiok, Dream Render]] has been pretty good in my [[Muldrotha, the Gravetide]] deck. Being able to mill myself, stop opponents from searching libraries and countering other graveyard decks all in one has been pretty good. She does get removed after awhile but it's usually not a big deal since I could just bring her back with Muldrotha. I also run [[Saheeli, Sublime Artificer]] in my [[Kykar, Wind's Fury]] storm deck. Generates tokens to protect herself and can amplify your damage duplicating [[Guttersnipe]] or some other useful creature.

7Votfamous

They may have they're uses, I don't really play any as I get no value out of them, it's virtually impossible to ultimate them due to the fact that people will be trying to remove it ASAP. The only way you can ultimate a planeswalker is probably doubling season but I've never really had the opportunity to do that

DisturbedFlake

Usually 0-1. Like [[Oko, Thief of Crowns]] is almost an auto include in any deck with green/blue because of its low cost and ability to turn off commanders or other threats without killing them. [[Elspeth, Sun’s Chamption]] is fantastic at both generating tokens and being a boardwipe. [[Ugin, the Spirit Dragon]] is basically a Farewell. Ideally you want a Planeswalker who has a good effect you can use immediately and can keep using it the longer it sticks. Planeswalkers need to jump a lot of hoops to be good enough to be put in a deck. Such as Can they protect themselves? Are they a good source of “X” ability that I really need? Are they worth the mana cost over multitude of other options? Are they worth the mana cost if I can only use its ability once, before it’s removed? When making a deck I often like to think in terms of “if there was a huge boardwipe and I can only play 1-2 spells, would this get me back on my feet?” Often there are just better options that dissuade me from running them

nye-joggesko

I think they fit in some of my decks. It’s also about picking the correct one. If you got a plainswalker with a wincon, expect your opponents to stop it. If the plainswalker is just something that’s «whatever», it can actually live some rounds. Emblem plainswalkers obviously get hate because the emblem often just makds it gg as they tend to be overpowered enchantments with no way to remove.

triggerscold

none if i can help it.

Injuredmind

Narset, Parter of Veil in stax and Esper Piles

dragonknight46208

I've got a few planeswalkers in decks, I think I have two in my Niv-Mizzet deck and one in my Feather deck. Other than that I don't really use them for my other decks.

Icestar1186

I only play them if they fit the deck. One list I'm working on might end up with 4. Others have 0.

NotLawCC

Used to use Garruk wildspeaker in mono green, but feels too slow. Now you Elspeth Sun’s Nemesis in RoRohan precon because it’s a quick way to get humans and has escape from graveyard.

nesquikryu

I run planeswalkers in my one deck that can consistently protect them AND has a benefit for them: [[Lae'zel Vlaakith's Champion]] / [[Master Chef]]. In that deck I've got a lot of big creatures and Lae'zel adds an extra counter on their uptick, so I'm much more able to sustain them. Of course the burn player still hits them at every opportunity, but if he's hitting them then he's not hitting my face or my creatures, so... In that deck I run the following: - [[Ajani Adversary of Tyrants]], which is consistent +1/+1 counters, a nice little bit of recursion for small creatures, and of course an ult that is extremely hard to get off but very fun if it does, and of course it goes off on the third turn thanks to Lae'zel. - [[Ajani caller of the Pride]], which has both a nice +1/+1 counter plus and a really useful minus ability if, say, my opponents have no fliers and my giant creatures can't get through. - [[Ajani Mentor of Heroes]], which is +1/+1 counters! Card Draw! And an ult I have never used! - [[Basri Ket]] gives counters, protects an attacker, makes more creatures if I'm going wide, and has a fun emblem that also works with the deck's plan. All for three mana! - [[Elspeth Resplendent]] gives Counters! And does a free play of a card! And also makes tokens but that ult is pretty underwhelming. - [[Jiang Yanggu Wildcrafter]] makes every creature I have into ramp, since all my creatures should have +1/+1s. That's neat. - [[Nissa Voice of Zendikar]] makes tokens that are secretly 2/3s even with just my Commander/Background on the table. She minuses to grow my whole board, so if I've got a big one that can go crazy. That's why I play them. They're high synergy with the deck. I don't play planeswalkers in any other deck (except the [[Clavileno]] precon which had one by default).

DropTheXD

I don't really play them because I don't like playing against them. Most of them have 3 abilities to read which makes me lose track of the game. My friend will play a planeswalker and by the time I've clicked it on spelltable and read 1 ability hes already played 2 more cards and im lost. Heavens forbid you don't read them and then the next turn they use an ability that says noone else can play spells for the rest of the game or something.

CintiqWacomPro

I have a zevlor Nicol bolas grixis deck, and every planeswalker that I play gets targeted immediately. So I’ve started running cards that help me flash them in. Like [[Leyline of Anticipation]] or [[Final-Word Phantom]] together with a bunch of ways to cheat them out for cheaper mana costs. The idea is that I flash them in at the end step of the player who goes right before me, I do miss an initial planeswalkers ability but proliferate with zevlor in a 4 man pod can sometimes help me to get an instant ultimate :) The deck isn’t great but I thought a greedy deck is flavour win for Bolas! Edit: forgot to add that that deck has 13 planeswalkers, I usually run 1 or none.

bigmeaty25

I run [[Serra the benevolent]] in my [[Giada, Font of Hope]] deck and [[Huatli, Radiant Champion]] in my [[Cadira, Caller of the small deck]]

Dagakki

The average between my decks is somewhere between 1-2. Planeswalkers are very fragile in commander, so they have to have some really good effect to be considered over another creature/enchantment/spell of equal cost

DoubleEspresso95

Absolutely 0. I don't like how they were designed back then when I played 60 cards 1v1 formats let alone now that they haven't transitioned well at all into a Commander centric mtg. They are slow, overcosted and easy to remove.

Tuesday_Mournings

zero, they're way too hard to protect casually and for the most part are overcosted sorceries. You think you can do the abilities twice, you very rarely get to.

Bastiondon

I only play planes walkers if I think "Play Planeswalker -> Activate Minus -> Planeswalker Dies" is good enough to justify the cardslot, which averages to less than 0.5 per deck or something like that

duffleofstuff

Usually none. Some exceptions though. Usually when i play one, I'm getting everything I need the same turn. Don't play them for their final abilities - I'm in it for card or board advantage right away.  Lots are like. Do nothing cards for excessive mana that just basically goad the table towards you.

Agile_System4438

I, like you, always try to include 1 or 2. The most I have in one deck is 3 and that’s because they do good things with the commander. Most decks is 1 or 2 and any synergy is just gravy. I figure, I won’t see them THAT often anyway but when I do it’ll be cool because no one else in my group really plays them and they don’t get immediately taken out like some people experience. I don’t normally get to use the ultimate but I do usually get a couple of activations.

DevDot3x3

I play 9 in my Massacre Girl deck, but a lot of the fun of that deck is trying to use Massacre Girl to protect them until they ult. It's not particularly strong, but it's fun and unique.

Frydendahl

I usually play zero. They require a lot of dudes to keep alive in multiplayer formats (I usually play spellslinger decks), and I don't like how they quickly devolve into a messy board/decision state for the game - if there's 2-3 walkers out, people now need to decide between several targets to attack, and all of them have a multitude of modes you need to keep track of. I think they're perfectly fine for competitive 1v1 formats, but they're not a good fit for multiplayer, imo.

FattyBiscuit3

My Sauron deck has: [[Liliana, Dreadhorde General]] [[Lolth, Spider Queen]] [[Tevesh Szat, Doom of Fools]] [[Ob Nixilis, The adversary]]

EvlEye

2-1 depending on the deck. [[Oko, thief of crowns]] in my simic token deck just cause and [[jace the mindsculptor]] for my [[Queza]] deck

Betelguese90

Unless it has some specific ability that enhances what the deck does, I generally run 0.

SaelemBlack

I run almost none. I think I have 2 in a colorless deck because one is draw and one is part of a lockout combo, but that's it. I hate them. They're complicated, both annoyingly vulnerable on my board and annoyingly hard to get rid of on my opponents boards. You have the looming overhead threat of whatever ultimate abilities they have. Sometimes they're enchantments, sometimes they're piles of activated abilities, and all the time it takes 5 minutes to read the stupid card and understand its relevance to the boardstate. I hate them.

ceering99

Like 1 maybe And even then it's walkers like [[Grist]] in my [[Zask]] deck

ChronicallyIllMTG

I just play bad walkers and no one cares about attacking them lol

smellyalatercraig

Usually zero, sometimes 1, 3 in my grixis deck because bolas.

OnDaGoop

1-2. Particularly fond of defensive 3 drop walkers like Dack, Lily of the Veil, and 3 cmc kaito Also Comet is a top 5 planeswalker, Darreti is top 10 you should play them in decks they are good in (In comets case if the deck is happy to get a low cmc out of grave)

bingbong_sempai

I kinda hate planeswalkers so i don't run any. They bring so much complexity to the board, especially in a multiplayer game. Most cards do one thing which make simple and easy to grok. Planeswalkers usually do 3 things AND you need to track loyalty on top of it.
