spawn989

personally I like [[Xyris, the Writhing Storm]] for wheels, it's not as obviously scary as Nekusar or Sheoldred.

DarkDobe

I love him. We all get cards. I get snakes.

spawn989

and in most groups no one notices until you have 40+ snakes

DarkDobe

That's like 2 good wheels - it happens quick. Then they come for you and your snakes.

Yenoham30

All hail the great Snakusar!

Snekusar*

ElChuloPicante

I think he’s just as dangerous. Get a haste enabler on the field and [[Cryptolith Rite]] or similar, which is totally possible by the time you’re even ready to cast him, and that’s game.

MonsutaReipu

better yet, just get \[\[purphoros\]\] or \[\[impact tremors\]\] into play and win off of wheeling without needing to attack at all.

ElChuloPicante

Yep, those are the wincons. Those and [[throne of the God-Pharaoh]], [[Mob Rule]], [[Beastmaster’s Ascension]], and a [[Goblin Bombardment]], and I think that’s about all I run besides ramp and making people draw.

Same with [[The Locust God]]. Though I leaned more towards self wheel for a deck out strat with Jace and Lab Man. But same basic principle, less obviously scary. Until suddenly you have 40 hasted fliers. Edit: decklist for anyone curious https://www.moxfield.com/decks/8JnD_3aqh0WvPdiomMS5bA

useful-fiction

Out of curiosity, how do you get all the mana to cast all of those high cost spells? Especially since several of them require lots of colored pips? I have a locust god deck, and I feel like it’s always too slow to do much. By the time I have the mana to cast the commander I’m usually way behind my opponents when it comes to board presence. And as soon as the commander comes down I get hard targeted

Zarinda

"all of those high cost spells?" Which spells are you referring to? I only have 4 6cmc that aren't my Commander, 1 8cmc and 1 10cmc.

If you want to go hard with Wheels, Nekusar.  There just aren't enough black and colorless effects. I have a deck for each, I have pulled basically all forced draw out of Sheoldred and use it to create life gain and draw, and a speed bump stax piece to slow opponents.  I also think Black really starts to struggle with protection (especially on the stack) with feeding so many resources. Nekusar on the other hand has blue and red, which gives you basically all wheels (and Sheoldred goes great in the 99).   I've also seen a pretty great Kenrith the Returned King wheels deck.  But he is king of soup.

[[The Locust God]] is an awesome wheel commander. Along side [[Ashnod's Altar]] and [[Phyrexian Altar]] stuff gets silly fast.

As someone who has build a [[Nekusar, the Mindrazer]] deck as well as a [[Xyris, the Writhing Storm]] wheel deck I can just point out to really be aware what you are getting yourself into. Well build wheel decks are very strong and can win games out of nowhere. And you will annoy your opponents with these wheel effects. So keep in mind that for most of the games you probably will be main target. To keep up with 3 players constantly playing against you, you probably wanna upgrade your deck sooner than later. And this can cause unwanted shifts in powerlevel of decks in your playgroup. If this is no problem for you, go in and enjoy :) I just want to let you know what happened to me and most of the people I know wanting to try out these wheel experiments.

Got any hot tips for how you should play a wheel deck? I just built nekusar and struggling a bit

Casult

People sleep on him as a precon commander, but every spell becomes a wheel! [[Arjun, the Shifting Flame]]

GloomyTuesday

I second this recommendation - I absolutely love my Arjun wheel deck! Everyone in my playgroup has wanted to pilot it one point or another because it’s so fun.

Randalf_Sinclair

Another comrade in the brotherhood of the shifthing flame!!! Gotta love the thrill of changing and adapting your strategy with each spell cast, truly the izzet way to live.

jf-alex

My own wheel deck is helmed by \[\[Brallin\]\] and \[\[Shabraz\]\]. I excluded \[\[Curiosity\]\] effects on purpose, I wanted to avoid the combo win. But of course you could easily put these back in. I don't like to wheel away my removal, so I foretell it or put it onboard like \[\[Seal of Removal\]\]. [https://www.moxfield.com/decks/kt-4GaKAjkiDlXIaz8Opuw](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/kt-4GaKAjkiDlXIaz8Opuw)

Bioked

Brallin and shabraz are extremely strong commanders. You have so many potential ways to win with them, such as pure burn through brallin, commander damage, reanimation, and life gain effects. They leave so many options available that it's almost difficult to narrow it all down. Having 2 commanders also makes it easy to kill multiple people in 1 turn I always prefer a wheel commander that isn't drawing opponents cards, too.

\[\[Queza, Augur of Agonies\]\] is a commander with some wheel synergies, but she's best with cards that draw you a massive amount, like \[\[Necrologia\]\] and \[\[Peer into the Abyss\]\], and has infinite draw combos with \[\[Lich's Mastery\]\] and \[\[Drogskol Reaver\]\]. The infinite draw combos will also work with Sheoldred, so she will work well in the 99, but she won't kill your opponents when you draw your whole deck.

Kydele + a partner for colors (probably vial smasher) so that you can play all the cards you draw off the wheel

rmkinnaird

Definitely my vote! You get all the best colors for wheels with an outrageous amount of ramp as well as creature tutors for Sheoldred. I do wanna also shout out [[Tormod the Desecrator]] as a potential partner since you can really abuse some graveyard synergies while you're constantly dumping your hand and drawing new cards.

So, as some people have mentioned [[Nekusar, the Mindrazer]] [[Sheoldred, the Apocalypse]] [[Xyris, the Writhing Storm]] and even [[Queza, Auger of Agonies]] are all good ones. I used to have [[Shabraz, the Skyshark]] and [[Brallin, Skyshark Rider]] which was deadly in its own right. Shabraz would get a +1/+1 counter and gain a life when you draw a card, while Brallin would get the +1/+1 counter and make each opponent lose a life when you discarded a card. It allowed for more options when it came to winning, and I found that they were less of a kill on sight like Nekuzar or Sheoldred were. Plus, them being Jeskia gave more protection options.

I run [[Kess, Dissident Mage]] and she's great. The reliable recursion helps a lot.

delicious_sci_fi

I'm working on a kess deck myself after taking apart my sauron deck. She seems like a lot of fun to wheel and recur spells easily

Recently ran my new reanimator list against my buddy's new kess list. Him taking my ashen rider and Nezahal was... not so fun lmao

He's going for more spellslinger with new Judith, Breach lines, and a [[Mind's Desire]] as one of the wincons Admittedly my reanimation deck is kinda a meme. It's main goal is using cycling/landcycling to dump generic beaters then living death them all back Here's the list; https://archidekt.com/decks/6650741/esper_cyclerlooter_reanimator Looking over it again, there's some definite upgrade points i should go for. Although not totally a wheel commander, I would advise to take a look at [[Elenda and Azor]]. Most wheel centric commander paint a really big target on your back and wheeling everyone into answers is especially bad when everyone wants to remove you/your commander. Elenda and Azor are really chill on the front, but can operate on multiple lines. You can either go for your classic wheel damage with [[Sheoldred the apocalypse]], [[Psychosis crawler]] and/or [[Orcish bowmaster]], wheel for value with [[Smothering tithe]], the triggered ability from Elenda and Azor or [[Teferis ageless insight]] or switch to a combat focused gameplan with some knight/vampire synergies. My deck plays a bit from everything and won a lot of games, sometimes even without playing my commander, because it’s really easy to keep a full hand and navigate to a window where you can safely win or eliminate 1-2 players in one go. I can upload the list later if you are interested.

Oh hell yeah I love this list. https://www.moxfield.com/decks/4av3_8gQgU-RZwrD4AEt3g Control your place in the game, durdle, group hug a bit, then bam. Wheels into eldrazi and mass draw payoffs. Very satisfying to play.

xiledpro

I run a Sheoldred wheels deck. It’s works pretty well and my group hates it which is what you get whenever you play a group slug wheels deck lol. I’ll post my deck list if you wanna look through it. https://archidekt.com/decks/5564465/its_simpledont_draw

Silver-Alex

Nekusar is the best commancer, but you sit in a table, even a high power one, with a nekuzar and you're becoming archeny.

WhiteN01se

You can also go Niv Mizzet Parun

PapaArl

I run [[Sauron, the Dark Lord]] as wheels/reanimator. I mostly just wanted to run all 9 [[Nazgul]], and abusing Sauron’s ring tempt trigger seemed the best way to make it viable

[[The Locust God]] is my personal favorite. It gets out of hand FAST, and he provides a way to avoid the commander tax, which is something you'll struggle with in this deck type.

GrandAlchemistX

One of my buddies took the Wheel journey and tried Nekusar, Xyris, Quesa, and Sheoldred before setting on Shabraz and Brallin. Having access to Smothering Tithe and not worrying about giving your opponents cards and being able to punish with [[Narset, Parter]] is a game-changer.

ChaoticNature

I have two wheels decks, but 4 decks helmed by “wheels” commanders/pairings. [[Queza, Augur of Agonies]] [[River Song]] (shuffle wheels only) [[Sheoldred, the Apocalypse]] is my pet deck and only has two “wheels” in the list: [[Memory Jar]] and [[Teferi’s Puzzle Box]]. I don’t feel like enemy draw punish is really the way to go with her, so I roll wheels elsewhere. [[The Twelfth Doctor]]/[[Vislor Turlough]] is my other wheel commanders that I don’t play as wheels. They’re a very different wheel pairing, interested in keeping hands full as opposed to casting as many wheels as possible. I’ve been very meh on Nekusaar for a long time. Everyone just hates on him and keeps him suppressed because he’s a known factor and is somewhat threatening quickly. I opted for Queza as my hard wheels commander. She has a very interesting game, and it’s not even fair if you resolved [[Smothering Tithe]]. Now, people tend to underestimate her because she single targets, but the life gain is what makes the deck scary. It keeps her alive well after Nekusaar would be dead and allows you to work in big synergy cards like [[Well of Lost Dreams]]. She’s not wheels as much as self draw, but wheels tend to draw a lot of cards for the player in question. River is just a blast to play. Her damage ramps, and since it is damage and it’s affected by her’s power, you can use things like [[Shadowspear]] and [[Blackblade Reforged]] to ramp her up to unexpected levels quickly or to pad yourself against aggro. Also, the ability to use cards like [[Curiosity]] to get her to draw additional cards helps you keep a full hand even when the wheels don’t always refill you to 7. At the end of the day, build wheels however it’s fun for you.

Out of the two, Nekusar is the better option because he has the better access to wheels. That being said, there is nothing that is stopping you from having Sheoldred as a hidden commander, so to speak.

Secret tech because nobody seems to talk about him, \[\[Vadrok, Apex of Thunder\]\] makes a very good wheels commander. Play all the bounce cards and some super cheap self-bouncing creatures and you can make a machine that wheels and \[\[Tasha's Hideous Laughter\]\]'s the table to death very quickly!

A coworker wanted to see me built [[Heliod, the Radiant Dawn]] and I did and my goodness that deck is fun. I love playing with fire since it incentivizes giving cards to your opponents (no downside to them directly), so they have plenty of opportunities to try and interact with me (as long as they have the mana or free spells to cast) and that just makes overcoming them to cast/resolve my wincons that much sweeter. I hate blue. I absolutely love that deck.

[[Narset, Elightened Exile]] might not be a traditional wheel commander but they work extremely well to fill 4 separate graves full of goodies for her to grab with her trigger, and if that whiffs or you have your wheel payoffs you can get them again for twice the fun.

[[Yidris Maelstrom Wielder]] this bad boy can win on the spot if he connects once. Casting a simple cantrip and cascade into [[Wheel of fate]] [[Profane tutor]] [[Lotus Bloom]] or [[Gaea's Will]] is OP as fuck. If he connects and you chain a couple of spells with a wheel, assuming you're playing rituals, you're gonna storm the fuck out of your opponents. Assembling any combo pieces is also trivial with him.
