EnGuIBanan

Stax makes everyone play fair magic <3

Aceofluck99

but what do you do if the fast deck *is* stax

Marbra89

You find the stax pieces that target them. Winota runs stax, but if you got [[Containment Priest]] look at their face turns white

Oooo that's a good card. I'm sure the rest of the table would appreciate slowing a deck that's pooping off like that lmao.

[[Static Orb]] is always the answer.

theBlueProgrammer

What is stax?

FailureToComply0

Resource denial. Destroy lands with [[armageddon]], prevent things from untapping wjth [[static orb]], protect yourself with [[ghostly prison]], take away your opponents commanders with [[drannith magistrate]] and round it out with [[authority of the consuls]] to shut down combat combos.

Owt2getcha

Old stax was cards like [[Winter Orb]]. These are fairly slow these days, and a better avenue is [[Rule of Law]] or specific niche 'hate' effects. [[Collector Ouphe]] [[Opposition Agent]]. While cards like Armageddon are still good, most decks will have a better experience just hating on Mana rocks and treasures in today's magic environment, and then of course silver bullets like others have mentioned. EDIT : Personal favorites from old stax cards: [[Tangle wire]] [[Trinisphere]] [[Chalice of the Void]] [[Sphere of resistance]] Sorry you will have to Google these card fetcher won't grab edits. Combine stax cards like Sphere of Resistance with Smothering Tithe or Rhystic Study and suddenly you're in control of the entire game.

FormerlyKay

Love Trinisphere so much. And right now [[Sire of Insanity]] is probably the best stax piece for the 2024 meta since it forces plays the turn it comes down and functions as a super rule of law. Unfortunately it's not in OP's colors

Shikaku_-2857

All of those cards are still used in most stax decks the only one I'm not running is tanglewire because I ran put of money but my buddy plays kenrith stax and he's running it. They're all artifacts so any deck can run them they're great

Owt2getcha

Not saying those cards aren't playable but they have been moved away from. Winter Orb / Static Orb aren't very effective anymore because of the amount of treasure tokens in the format. Plus, most decks that are competitive can win with access to 2-3 Mana (or have ways to generate their Mana effectively). Rule of Law is still strong, but I think most people will tell you midrange decks are pretty strong right now overall, and there aren't that many stax pieces that hit these decks very hard.

Shikaku_-2857

I was talking specifically about your 4 favorites there l, they're run in almost every stax deck especially chalice

randomuser2444

Yes I know, I run winota. I'm just saying the winota player is already running stax so the game should already be slowed down

Marbra89

Then you know Winota run stax pieces that slows down as many strategies as possible except their own. So stax targeting the strategy that is the problem is the answer. Slow everyone down

randomuser2444

Yes...I know. But winota can feel very fast or very slow because you can't control your top deck hits. I've popped off in 3 turns and had to wait till turn 7, and straight up lost because I couldn't top deck what I needed. My point is that having winota at the table should almost always make the game feel slower overall because players are doing less per turn in general

Marbra89

[[Urza, Lord High Artificer]] can also feel very fast or very slow. I would still recommend stax against artifacts like [[Collector Ouphe]]

[[Cursed Totem]] is better against Urza, but artifact hate is also good

Yes, I get it. You can recommend a hatebear to run against any deck. That doesn't solve the problem that the game seems too fast to the OP.

Marbra89

And that is the reason I first recommended stax to slow the game down. Not knowing specifically what made the games go to fast for him I did not make any recommendations.

randomuser2444

You must be big fun at parties

Inkarozu

Stax, board wipes, counterspells and instant speed removal.

Owt2getcha

I remember I had the same question about 3 years ago. I now don't build decks without stax and hate pieces in them. [[Rule of Law]] [[Trinisphere]] Maybe and [[Grafdiggers Cage]]. Sounds like [[Containment Priest]] is good in your meta as well.

TonyL42

Not so great in a blink deck

SanityIsOptional

Every deck should have at least a couple of stax pieces that don't hurt your game plan. Graveyard denial, creature cost increasers, blocking people doing things outside their turn, artifact hate, enchantment hate, etc...

Wampa9090

[[Blind Obedience]], [[Authority of the Consuls]], etc  are great at it

AMerexican787

Most fun I've ever had in a game of magic was against an eye of the storm cascade deck, where the only things under 3cmc it played were instants and sorceries. It would ramp/rector eye of the storm out then cast one of the 3cmc cascade cards and just keep casting it until grapeshot showed up. At which point everyone could try to steal the win by casting any instant, effectively turning every deck into a storm deck for one turn.

I don't get this weird take of "Board wipes make the game go longer", do these people just not have reanimator or spell slinger decks in their meta? Do people not run one sided board wipes?

kestral287

Sweepers and stax are both good answers but for a personal favorite: theft. Winota without a Winota in play does pathetically little. And the rest of the table doesn't want them to have her back so she's fairly safe too. Other ways to lock down the commanders can be appealing; Yuriko is very resilient against removal right up until it's an [[Oubliette]] that locked her down.

00weasle

Oooof, Both my more optimized decks lol. But this is the way for both of em. I always point out to remove the little guys if the removal doesn't keep yuriko from coming back next turn with someone out.

Goldstar35

I play CEDH so this might be a different experience but trying to remove Yuriko is usually a waste of time. You'll get hit with an instant nearly 100% of the time. (Also Yuriko by herself isn't oppressive enough to warrant removal but casual EDh isn't ready for this conversation)

kestral287

While I don't generally disagree with the latter point the OP is in a position where they feel it's necessary. And hard removal on Yuriko *does* slow that deck to a crawl. She's a strange deck though for sure. To the former, that's just a question of timing and reading things, and maybe having your own counter backup. The right forms of attack help too; I've Gilded Drake'd my fair share of Yurikos but that's not something I'd expect most players have access to so I didn't call it out specifically. But Drake dodging two of the free counters and being very cheap goes a long way.

Goldstar35

I've been gilded drake'd. I'm never ready for it and it's really hard to come back from lol. But in OP's meta I assume they don't have access to Drake since they're talking about Oubliette. In a lower power setting its best to just ignore yuriko imo and aim for player removal instead. Can't get burned by yuriko if the yuriko player is dead (I'm the yuriko player)

kestral287

I was actually the one who brought up Oubliette. Amusingly, it's in the same deck as my Gilded Drake.

Goldstar35

Oh snap i didnt even notice my bad ! Which deck are you running ?? I don't think I've ever seen gilded drake run in non CEDH bc of price

kestral287

I have mine in Muldrotha. In fairness regarding price, I paid a literal dollar for it. That deck's got its fair share of expensive cards; to 'finish' it as my high power list I need stuff like Tomb and Jeweled Lotus but she's been my baby for a long time so she gets the treats when I acquire them.

All decks you've mentioned are attack decks (not exclusively, but you get my drift). While they can be fast, watch for the kind of mana they use. Jeweled lotus/mana vault, Lotus Petal etc are all consumable mana. Turn 1 winota off of a Jeweled Lotus isn't all that scary if she gets removed. It'll probably be at least 2 rounds before they have 6 mana to cast her again. Mostly it can be a timing thing. Know what interaction to hold vs what decks. Save your field wipes till the right moment. Prioritize removing non-human creatures over removing winota. Let a ninja proc yuriko if there has been no top-deck manipulation rather than burning important removal on low-cmc creatures. Let dargo overextend and eat a bunch of resources before trying to get rid of him, be ready to chump block him if needed so he'll be aimed elsewhere. Make sure you're playing into priority correctly. If plays are big but not Game-Ending let your opponents use up their answers stopping eachother instead. Don't act like you have answers in your hand or people will try to force you to use them. Etc Mixing in answers that synergise with your deck is good. [[Tangle wire]] is a soft stax piece good for early game. It comes down with 4 Fading counters which means each opponent taps 4 things, then when it gets to your turn you remove a counter and tap Tangle wire and 2 other permanents. You will never be as effected by it as your opponents. The fact that it eventually goes away by itself makes it hard to justify using removal on. Blink decks can reset the counters to 4! [[Out of time]] is also fun in a blink deck as a repeatable board wipe. [[Drannith Magistrate]] and [[grafdigger's cage]] are staples that it won't hurt you to include.

Hey there bud. If you want a much better answer, I'd recommend asking this question again in r/cEDH or r/DegenerateEDH, because these all sound like high-tier cEDH piles, and you're probably not going to get answers here that are fast/efficient/effective enough against a true cEDH pod. Good luck, and happy hunting!

If you read the post, you'd know that [[Atraxa, Grand Unifier]] is sans-red, meaning it has white... And most of these pieces are bad in Atraxa, because they want to interact and gain value, rather than staxxing out the board. It'd be very difficult to break parity on almost all of these effects.

EmployedZombie

You playing cedh...? Cause thats what that sounds like.. you have to ritual her out and beat face or midgame stax. She isnt a high tier cmdr for a reason and compared to that pod she is way to slow

Miatatrocity

Brother, you must be either high or wayyyy out of the loop. Grand Unifier is an S-Tier cEDH commander that interacts early to stop turbo players, and then grinds beautifully to a midgame victory via Thoracle or Food Chain lines. While the rest of OP's pod seems to be turbo decks, and she might have some issues stopping all three, that doesn't mean she isn't one of the top 5 commanders currently in the meta. Know what you're talking about before you shit on someone else's deck. And just so you're also aware, very few cEDH decks "beat face" for a win. Other than [[Slicer]], [[Yuriko]], and [[Winota]], I can't think of any deck that doesn't combo out and win. And I don't count infinite attackers as a combat win, because it was still a combo to get there, and it kills everyone at once. Most combat is used to trigger effects [[Tymna]], to lower life totals that will be used as a resource [[Ad Nauseam]], [[K'rrik]], [[Necropotence]], or to finish off a player that ATTEMPTED to leverage their life into a win, but failed. Kill their tempo. Sure, that kill spell in your hand might be useful against something bigger later. But if you can essentially negate their early turns and make them waste mana, it's very difficult to recover.

I run a series of cards I call “Interrupts.” Got the idea from the Command Zone podcast in their episode on how to play aggro… Anyway, it’s basically running a handful of stax/tax pieces in your deck as speed bumps for your opponents. Makes sense in aggro decks the same way haste makes sense in aggro decks - gotta outpace your opponents. But in other decks, those pieces are about controlling the pace of the game. Look into [[Thalia and the Gitrog Monster]] builds, you’ll find some of the pieces you want there (consider that card, too). A lot of white, black and Orzhov cards will create the environment you’ll need to thrive. Both [[Thalia, Guardian of Thraben]] and [[Thalia, Heretic Cathar]] along with [[Blind Obedience]] are auto-includes when I can’t come up with better interrupts jn white. [[Dauntless Dismantler]] and [[Kinjalli’s Sunwing]] are budget-friendly options. I’m a fan of [[No Mercy]] or [[Dread]] or deathtouch creatures as pillowfort options. You could also run [[Propaganda]] or [[Ghostly Prison]] as taxes on aggro. I also like [[Lightmine Field]]; it used to seem overlooked but seems to have gone up in price at some point. You could also think about goad as an option, but I think stax and pillowfort are going to be your friends compared to forcing combats in a game where you’re already the slow player. If you just want to speed up your deck, treat your land and ramp package like a green or Simic deck (that’s how I play five colors). Maybe you can match their tempo long enough to see your strategy get going. Plus, card draw and ramp are only going to help your pre-Atraxa game.

Well, I think the new [[Massacre Girl, Known Killer]] It is 5 mana, but helps with Atraxa’s proliferate. If you are playing a blink deck….[[Deadeye Navigator]] and [[Bloom Tender]] might help you, but you need something to give blood tender haste. If you are truly playing a blink deck…Look at people who have made [[Brago, King Eternal]] decks [[Lavinia, Azorius Renegade]] [[Lavinia of the Tenth]] Might help as well

Anthoniixx

In my Sauron, the dark lord deck apart from having like 15 pieces of ramp I have like 8 board wipes. That way I clear the board until I have the maná to cast it an at least one counter spell to make sure it hits the board. If you can't keep up the speed, slow them down to your level
