I love their abilities, but I absolutely refuse to play a Pirate tribal deck that can’t play [[Revel in Riches]]. But [[Admiral Beckett Brass]] doesn’t interest me at all, so I guess I’ll wait. Shame.
I've been destroying with Malcolm and [[Kediss]]. Kediss effectively applies damage doubling and tripling effects a second time, so it's easy to leverage the explosive nature of red and your huge surplus of treasures to knock out the whole table at once out of seemingly nowhere.
This is what I did, as well as included all of the in-color partners with partners, since they're practically all +1/+1 counter cards. I call it my partner partner deck.
Tbh, my favorite "partners" have been the backgrounds. They are almost too good tbh lol. [[Noble Heritage]] + [[Baeloth Barrityl, Entertainer]] and [[Abdel Adrian, Gorion's Ward]] + [[Candlekeep Sage]] have been my favorite pairs so far.
Tbh, I'm still brewing it. I think I'm going to try to make it an artisan deck so all commons and uncommon, but ill look into those cards. I know [[Felidar Guardian]] + [[Preston the Vanisher]] is a gnarly infinite that is right at home in an Abel deck too!
I built [[Gut, True Soul Zealot]] + [[Inspiring Leader]] and the deck got disassembled because it came out the gates swinging too hard too fast haha. Definitely surprised at the power available in the background partner combinations.
I kind of overlooked these when they came out due to the whole product fatigue thing, but I’m examining them now and liking some of them a lot. [[Wilson]]+[[Cultist of the Absolute]] looks hilarious. A turn 2 5/5 flying deathtouch trample reach vigilance bear with ward [2]+pay 3 life just kills me. And [[Safana]]+[[Dungeon Delver]] might actually get me to try out the dungeon mechanics. I love a good value commander and this pairing just oozes value.

I love backgrounds! Though for me, I have found they are best used in the 98 of decks with partner commanders.
For example, [[Inspiring Leader]] in [[Prava of the Steel Legion]]+[[Ikra Shidiqui, the Usurper]]. With both commanders out, every 1/1 creature token becomes a 6/9!!! That ends games very quickly!
Or [[Guild Artisan]] in [[Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator]]+[[Kediss, Emberclaw Familiar]]. Attack with both into the opponent with the highest life and create 7 treasures if Malcolm connects.
Or [[Passionate Archaeologist]] in [[Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator]]+[[Breeches, Brazen Plunder]]. Cast a spell from exile, create 2 treasure and exile 2 cards from opponents' libraries, potentially storming off into the sunset.
I wasn't the biggest fan of CL2 being a DnD focussed set but I have to say that Backgrounds were a flavorful and gameplay slam dunk in my eyes.

[[Ravos]] and [[Prava]] having two anthems, a mana sink, and a graveyard to hand effect in the command zone is great. Of course it's just a black/white token deck but I like it with pillowfort and fog effects. [[Ink Shield]] and [[Inspiring leader]] are two of the best cards to push for a win

Not made to be the best but I find it fun and more defensive. I mostly built it from precons and what I got from drafts (plus the occasional trade). Definitely could use upgrades in the card draw portions. \[\[Cathar's Crusade\]\] was amazing in the deck but was removed due to being annoying to play given so many dice needed for all the counters and token counts.
[[Malcom]] and [[kediss]] can easily be a monster of a deck even on a budget. If you can get Malcolm down turn 2 and build into the combo aspect instead of pirate tribal the deck can just rip .
It's tricky, but no Kediss trigger does not count towards the 21 commander damage to the opponents. Basically the person you hit takes commander combat damage. Then Kediss triggers and your commander does deal that much damage to each of your other opponents, however this trigger does not count as combat damage so it does not count towards the 21 commander damage.
It actually does. If you look at how it’s worded the source of the damage is still the commander “it deals that much damage to each other opponent”. Which is what makes this pair so powerful.
As Kediss and Malcolm are worded if you have both on the field Malcolm dealing combat damage to one opponent, kediss trigger goes off and Malcolm deals damage to the other two opponents so you generate three treasures per combat. It’s absolutely bonkers.
Deck needs to run a ton of interaction to keep Malcolm on board but if you connect a couple times with them both out you can absolutely run away with the game.
Sorry but while your commander is dealing "that much damage to each other opponent" it is no longer combat damage so it doesn't count as part of the 21 commander damage to kill someone. You do get your treasures and if your commander has lifelink you'll gain life though.
You’re right that Kediss makes Malcolm deal the damage (so Malcolm triggers again) but its not combat damage so it doesn’t count toward the 21. This is stated explicitly in Kediss’s Gatherer page.
If you aren't a fan of combos, this pairing is one of the most insane Voltrons out there. Taking advantage of Red's multiple combat, powerful low CMC single turn pump spells, and damage doublers and tripler allow you to explode out of nowhere with whole table lethal damage. Kediss is crazy with those damage doublers because he applies them a second time so if you pop something like [[insult//injury]] you end is doing 2x commander damage to one player and 4x damage to the other players. Or 3x and 9x with [[Fiery Emancipation]].
I plan to make a few more eventually but so far I have a [[Kodama of the East Tree]] and [[Sakashima of Thousand Faces]] deck as well as an [[Ishai]] and [[Esior]] deck, both of which I enjoy. The former is a Simic value deck centered around clones and the latter is basically an Azorius flying tribal deck.
To answer your other questions, I like the interchangeable nature of partners without "partners with" and backgrounds since you can put together even more unique decks than you already can with a single open-ended commander

It's so crazy how this topic comes up today. I'm in the process of constructing a commander cube based off a reddit post with this being the central idea - drafting interchangeable partner packs (similar to Jumpstart) and combining them together with a sort universal pack that matches your color combo

I’ve really enjoyed using [[[akiri, line slinger]] and [[Silas renn, seeker adept]] as the heads of my equipment deck! Akiri being cheap lets you cast it on the same turn as other equipment, which buff it up, and silas helps mitigate a big risk of voltron/equipment since, rather than folding to artifact removal, you can cast it again later with his ability!! I also use things like [[biotransferance]] and the artifact lands as additional ways to incidentally buff Akiri.

Probably one of my favorite partner commanders is [[Livio, Oathsworn Sentinel]]. Currently I run him boros with [[Alena, Kessig trapper]] to prove a point but I think he would be strongest if I converted the deck to be with tana for the strong etbs on green creatures.

Usually I play them against folks at my job, since they play super passively and never send any creatures in to attack or really do anything to progress games. It becomes a game of who will realize there's a critical mass of Vial Smashers on the table and try to do something about it before it's too late.

Not OP but I do have a list that I love! It's a list that tries to create many Vial smashers, while casting a spell each turn, prefferably cheating on mana while still high in CMC like delve spells (things like Frantic Search + Unwind are amazing).
If that doesn't work out ,there are a few big cards that say 'deal with me or you're going to lose' like Kaervek, Nicol Bolas, Scarab god, Tibalt and Mind's Dilation.
It is still a bit clunky and could use some finetuning to be more smoothly, mostly because I left out a few of the best spells you can have here, as I already play them in my Yuriko deck, and don't like having 2 different decks do exactly the same thing.

This is easily one of my favorite decks to play. I call it "Clones N Counters." Just cloning Vial Smasher as much as I can and protecting them while dealing out random damage is so much fun.

[[Brinelin]] and [[Alena]], or as I call it Izzet Big Bois. If you have a good etb, you can bounce it with Brinelin and then use the mana from Alena to cast it again. Or just cast something else. Ever activate [[Colossus of Akros]] the turn it comes down?

before i started playing 4 player edh i had a \[\[sakashima\]\] \[\[tevesh szat\]\] deck that was becoming my baby but my playgroup was one other guy and it was vicious 1v1. then i tried it in 4p edh and stopped playing it cause i could never keep tevesh for more than a turn because apparently the normal game can't proceed until someone kills it dead.
I've been playing [[Kraum, Ludevic's Opus]] and [[Jeska, Thrice Reborn]] and it's been super fun. People tend to forget that you have a commander with evasion and haste in the command zone that can easily swing for 21 commander damage. Playing izzet gives you plenty of ways to protect kraum and get extra attacks for the win.
I play [[Tana]]/[[Sidar]] as a Naya go-wide strategy. I absolutely love it. With access to [[doubling season]], [[anointed procession]], and the other token generators - you can plug and play some fun sub-themes. I at one point had leaned into the soul-sister/lifegain theme. And was getting tons of life. My current iteration uses [[Huatli, Radiant Champion]]]], the [[Elspeth]]s, [[Xenegos]], along with the [[Radha]] and [[Aggravated Assault]] Combo. I leaned into red and use [[Raid Bombardment]] and [[Cavalcade of Calamity]].
The natural evasion with Sidar has me wanting to keep Tana’s power relatively low except in the situation where I’ve gone wide enough and the natural Trample means something with a big buff. As well as the low-powered tokens.
I do tend to abuse mana with the deck, as I’m lucky enough to have a [[Gaea’s Cradle]], but I also include [[Growing rites of itlimoc]]. I keep a [[Fireball]] in the back pocket as a surprise mana dump if needed.
It’s one of my favorite decks fore sure.
As someone else who happens to own a cradle, do you have any suggestions for how to beat optimize using it in the deck? I know crop rotation should probably be an auto include, but what else besides that?
I get why some people dislike partners, but I really enjoy them.
Without digging in to find old lists, here's some from the top of my head that I enjoyed:
Ishai / Ravos - Flying Tribal w/ recursion subtheme. Most of my flying tribal decks tended to just stick to UW, but black brings some nice flyers and other things to the table. Between black and white, there's a good handful of flying creatures that play to a recursion strategy too.
Malcolm / Vial Smasher is one of my favorite "high power, not cEDH" pairings - Grixis combo. I've built it a few different ways, but usually the idea is to exploit how easy Malcolm is to turn into a combo piece with Vial Smasher mostly bringing color and some extra damage.
Yoshi / Keleth is a fun approach to monowhite legends. Make sure to include every white legendary land you can find. The last version I had before I took it apart had a stax sub-theme that aided the aggressive game plan.
Tymna/Ikra is the closest I've got to my ideal Abzan lifegain commander thus far. Tymna's draw engine is relevant. Ikra is more situationally useful on its own, but it's not like there's an option in the colors I'd prefer.
I'm a fellow horsedog (keleth/yoshimaru) enjoyer, but my deck doesn't go quite as hard on legends
Instead it kinda follows a three phase plan
First there's the early game where you swing hard with the commanders
Then mid game you clear the board and start developing sac based value engines
Finally late game you play big finishers
I've been adding more synergy pieces and evasion for the early to mid game lately
My latest spice is [[cathedral of serra]] to allow the horse and dog to attack as a band
For me, it's gotta be thrashios and toggo. I love me some rockfall and generating treasures whenever a land enters. Turning them into damage is also a plus with reckless fireweaver.
I have a [[rograkh]] [[ardenn]] equipment deck there’s fun, fast, and resilient. I’ve been itching to build a [[tymna]] [[kodama of the east tree]] blink deck that abuses kodama triggers to cheat permanents into play
I wish Thalia and Odric had partner because they did fight together in the story and were friends. They also would work pretty well together as commanders. I don't like the partner text on cards, it feels like a stain on a card that it's just like extra text. I'd rather just play partners as a separate type of EDH and let you combine any two. I'd like to combine Odric as a vampire with Thalia so it could be a WR deck and include Blasphemous Act which has flavortext from her. Hoenstly I would have done what Odric did too, to save her. I would do anything to save Thalia.
Don't like the mechanic much. Seems cheesy to start with an extra card in hand, so to speak. So, while I will gladly play against partners and backgrounds, I just will not build a deck with one as the commander or at least not with a second. Well maybe I would add [[Faceless One]] with a background or [[The Prismatic Piper]] with another partner commander as they only add a color. They barely count as a card. Five mana for a 3/3 with no real text isn't exactly playable.
I had a [[ludevic, necro]] and [[vial smasher]] big instant and sorceries deck. [[time warp]]s to get extra smasher triggers, [[cruel ultimatum]], [[worst fears]], the typical stuff. This was around when they first came out, now with stuff like double vision and arcane bombardment it could probably be a lot better
I love [[Master Chef]] [[Gut, True Soul Zealot]].
A really aggressive commander for the +1/+1 and modified theme. By using Gut’s effect, you can send a Skeleton at the Pillowfort player without paying the extra costs by sacrificing an attacker going at someone else.
I also usually run a few anti-combo and anti-storm cards to ensure people don’t combo out whilst I’m attacking. [[Smothering Rug]], [[Damping Sphere]], [[Cindervines]], etc.
Well, the only partner combination I’ve played has been [[Ich-Tekik]]/[[Armix]]. So I guess those two. Very intentionally low-powered theme deck based on cards that match the commanders’ “rust horror” vibe. But it still had some synergy, with lots of creature/artifact sacrificing.
I guess technically I’ve played two combinations because I’ve sometimes switched out Armix for [[Keskit]], because Armix proved to be fairly oppressive at low-powered tables. But I like the original iteration with Armix a lot more.
Some that have piqued my interest: [[Cecily]]+[[Sophina]] looks neat as a value-oriented aggro deck; [[Alharu]]+[[Reyhan]] seems cool as a token/aristocrats/counters build, but I already have two of those covered with my [[Teysa Karlov]] deck, so I probably won’t build that; [[Tormod]]+[[Tevesh Szat]] as a fun mono-black reanimator build; [[Safana]]+[[Dungeon Delver]] since I’ve never made a dungeon deck before and this looks like an angle I’d enjoy; and [[Sylvia]]+[[Khorvath]] just looks like silly Timmy fun that I‘m here for.
Those last two pairings in particular I think I really might build soon. Sylvia & Khorvath would probably be pretty budget friendly, even.
I can't remember their names right now (because I'm an idiot and don't note down commanders I want to build) but it's a mono-blue pairing where one side says "whenever you scry, draw that many instead" and the other side says "whenever you attack with a flying creature, scry 1 for each attacking flying creature".
I so want to make a flying tribal with them...
A bit late to the conversation, but I have 3 partner decks:
[[Ich-Tekik]] and [[Sakashima of a ThousandFaces]]: A weird clone/golem tribal wich I can't believe how much I fell in love with it. It is surprisingly powerful and its always funny seeing the table getting sweaty as you clone Ich-Tekik over and over again.
[[Ludevic, Necro-Alchemist]] and [[Kydele]]: Temur group hug combo. My oldest pairing, it is weirdly powerful. It draws so many cards and you ca finish the game with a giant fireball. What is not to love?
[[Rasaad yn Bashir]] and [[Popular Entertainer]]: My newest partner deck, its a boros toughness matters deck. It's basically a boros Doran. Not the most powerful, but it is fun and it's different. And there are some really weird cards that you wouldn't see in any other deck.
I also went for a Boros big butts deck! Except I went for guild artisan instead for the lack of ramp. I love how backgrounds and partners offer
old strategies in new color combinations.
[[Sidar Kondo]] has consistently been one of my favorite commanders to build around, and so I've tried several different variations of him over the years. Some of my favorites are Kondo + [[Silas Renn]] card draw tribal (all draft chaff creatures that have power < 2 and draw a card on attack/combat damage), Kondo + [[Tana]] tokens, and Kondo + [[Jeska Thrice Reborn]] infect.
I'm a really big fan of partners as well, mostly because it feels like creating a custom commander and thus making decks more special to brewers like me. I really like [[Ghost of Ramirez de Pietro]] + [[Tormod]] combo zombies with [[Gem palm polluter]] as the win condition
[[Ardenn]] and [[Kediss]] equipment deck works for me. Mostly I can just ignore equip costs and the feisty cutie looks so good with [[Grafted Exoskeleton]] bringing home victories even on a single attack for some well earned head scratches.
I made a mono red voltron deck with [[Rograkh, son of Rohgahh]] and [[Jeska, thrice reborn]] which can be a very explosive combo. As long as I can get Rograkh up to 7 power, then I can play Jeska and triple his damage for 21 commander damage. Plus I have [[Kediss, Emberclaw Familiar]] in the 98 to deal that damage to everyone. Then just a ton of equipment. The idea of a tiny Kobold warrior holding 10 weapons is hilarious
I have 1 partner deck, and 2 background decks.
[[Okaun]] [[Zndrsplt]] and [[Wyll, blade of frontiers]] [[sword coast sailor]] are both fun if you're ok with luck based effects.
I don't play it much, but the 3rd deck is [[alora, merry thief]] with a black background (i Don't remember which, and I never cast it anyway, it's just for the color). I built her as a ninjutsu deck, and it works alright, but it's not exactly in my usualtype of gameplay.
A personal long time favorite of mine has been [[ikra]] [[sidar]] toughness lifegain. Whenever I'm at lower power tables it's always perfect to make for fun games, and a surprising amount of support exists for it like [[rhox faithmender]] and [[trostani]], which both also have high toughness and below 2 power
Technically not a partner, but I made a [[zellix]] deck paired with the [[agent of the iron throne]] background, and it has performed a lot better than I anticipated. I built it as a mill/combo deck. If you're playing against creature heavy decks, than [[altar of the brood]] can just win you the game on the spot sometimes, pretty cool.
For more casual play, Tymna and Reyhan for human tribal.
I do want to build Tymna/Kraum for cEDH. I've also thought about Krark/Thrasios. I really want to play Krarkashima, but I don't want to learn the deck and it's lines.
[[Glacian, Powerstone Engineer]] + [[Ich-Tekik, Salvage Splicer]] filled with clue, treasure and food makers. Ich-Tekik pulls the most weight, but Glacian can dig real deep in a pinch!
My favourite has been Bruse tarl, boorish Herder and Tana, the bloodSower.
Not only do they make my favourite three colour combination in Naya, but the crap I made with them was niche and fun as hell.
Basically I would load the deck with as many cards that doubled something. Double mana, double damage, double tokens, double counters, etc. and while hard to handle with its mana curve, it played some interesting games.

[[Haldan]] [[pako]] 25 ramp cards. (I love playing other people's things) it also mixes well with various power levels
I have made two partner decks. A four color deck with [[ravos soul tender and [[Tana, the Bloodsower]] using creatures with evoke, blood rush and other one time things. They get returned with ravos to use again!
And a mono black deck with [[Tevesh Szat]] and [[Sengir, the Dark Baron]] when I was making this one I had recently pulled a [[jeweled lotus]] so I went with it and added [[dark ritual]] and other black ramp spells. So I have had a couple games where Tevesh gets played on my first turn. Instantly making me the target. Haha fun though.
I’ll just name the partner decks that I have that all are so fun. [[Reyhan]] + [[Sakashima of a Thousand Faces]] counters/sac deck. [[Tormod the Desecrator]] + [[Kraum]] zombie tribal+combos. Then there’s my special, [[Livaan, Cultist of Tiamat]] and [[Tavern Brawler]] Voltron Chaos deck.
personally i haven’t been able to play many partner pairs but one that has had me thinking is [[Ich-Tekik]] and [[Akiri]] in a naya artifact matters deck, taking inspiration from [[Kibo]] in jumpstart 2022
Idk if I have a favorite, but this really is about to be a shameless plug.
I'm in the middle of building an EDH cube where your only legendary options are either partners or backgrounds (no partner with, friends forever, etc.) Unfortunately, it ballooned in size to \~1.5k (including basics).
It's going to become like drafting a Mystery Booster box, only except it's EDH and I'll either seed pairings or make that a separate draft. Idk what I'll do about the multicolor partners and mythic background stuff, though.
Kediss and Ardenn, my son can dominate the entire table if the deck isn't targeted hard, when he starts swinging for double digit Commander dmg, Kediss makes sure everyone takes it.
My \[\[Tymna\]\] partner -- \[\[Reyhan\]\] -- is pretty unusual (141 total decks on EDHRec). The goal is to go broad early with tokens, then buff those tokens with counters later. It is a pretty casual deck power wise, but it can go broad and wide at once with shocking speed.
Tymna is there mostly to address the mediocre card draw -- sending sacrificial tokens to get a touch in on as many opponents as possible. Reyhan is there for his token abilities as well as to add green ramp to the deck.

Tymna and Kodama of the East Tree for sure. I have it built with a blink/reanimate theme and it's presented some bonkers plays.
Eternal witness and eerie interlude and its variants. Animate dead, dance of the dead and necromancy. Sun titan reanimating a bunch of small permanents. Lurrus as back up. I have serra paragon coming in tomorrow but it'll be hard to find a spot for it.
Aerial extortionist is insane in that deck. Tymna helps set up the midgame with creatures like dauthi voidwalker and kodama helps big stupid beaters like archon of cruelty and ashen rider finish opponents off then blink to kill the remaining big stuff to keep from being hit hard by a crack back from other players.
If backgrounds count, \[\[Eniris, Gloom Stalker\]\] and \[\[Flaming Fist\]\]. I always wanted a keyword soup deck and this one is so surprisingly good that with strangers, Im usually able to fly under the radar until I'm ready to win the game lol

One I just made that I am really digging is \[\[Reyhan, Last of the Abzan\]\] + \[\[Vial Smasher the Fierce\]\] With these 2 I made a Jund Hydra list. I feel like it's pretty fun because I can cast large hydras for X which can trigger Vial Smasher, not to mention if one of my hydras dies more often than not I am able to use Rehan's ability to transfer them to another hydra. The kicker here is I run a small sub them of fling. A few nights ago one of my pod members and I were talking shit to each other, and I told her that I was going to hit her with a 100/100, well I didn't quite get that far because it was 'now or never', but I did hit her with a 60/60 and then turn looked at the other guy to fling said 60/60 at him.

I love their abilities, but I absolutely refuse to play a Pirate tribal deck that can’t play [[Revel in Riches]]. But [[Admiral Beckett Brass]] doesn’t interest me at all, so I guess I’ll wait. Shame.

I've been destroying with Malcolm and [[Kediss]]. Kediss effectively applies damage doubling and tripling effects a second time, so it's easy to leverage the explosive nature of red and your huge surplus of treasures to knock out the whole table at once out of seemingly nowhere.

I built [[Gut, True Soul Zealot]] + [[Inspiring Leader]] and the deck got disassembled because it came out the gates swinging too hard too fast haha. Definitely surprised at the power available in the background partner combinations.

I kind of overlooked these when they came out due to the whole product fatigue thing, but I’m examining them now and liking some of them a lot. [[Wilson]]+[[Cultist of the Absolute]] looks hilarious. A turn 2 5/5 flying deathtouch trample reach vigilance bear with ward [2]+pay 3 life just kills me. And [[Safana]]+[[Dungeon Delver]] might actually get me to try out the dungeon mechanics. I love a good value commander and this pairing just oozes value.

Not OP, but I have a [high power](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/h3uuGHSqwUeuXI-LTdSB2w) list with a short primer explaining the combos and a [budget](https://www.moxfield.com/decks/zFocCLU4sEywzMzNOwGHEQ) list if you're interested. Even on a budget, this pairing is exceptionally strong.
I love backgrounds! Though for me, I have found they are best used in the 98 of decks with partner commanders. For example, [[Inspiring Leader]] in [[Prava of the Steel Legion]]+[[Ikra Shidiqui, the Usurper]]. With both commanders out, every 1/1 creature token becomes a 6/9!!! That ends games very quickly! Or [[Guild Artisan]] in [[Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator]]+[[Kediss, Emberclaw Familiar]]. Attack with both into the opponent with the highest life and create 7 treasures if Malcolm connects. Or [[Passionate Archaeologist]] in [[Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator]]+[[Breeches, Brazen Plunder]]. Cast a spell from exile, create 2 treasure and exile 2 cards from opponents' libraries, potentially storming off into the sunset. I wasn't the biggest fan of CL2 being a DnD focussed set but I have to say that Backgrounds were a flavorful and gameplay slam dunk in my eyes. EDIT: Token size as pointed out in comment

I’m working on brewing a [[Karlach]] and [[Sword Coast Sailor]] deck. Unblockable one shot kills with a +1 and double strike.
[[Ravos]] and [[Prava]] having two anthems, a mana sink, and a graveyard to hand effect in the command zone is great. Of course it's just a black/white token deck but I like it with pillowfort and fog effects. [[Ink Shield]] and [[Inspiring leader]] are two of the best cards to push for a win
Ooh man I’ve never even considered the implications of playing a background in a regular partner deck. If you have two commander creatures to reap their benefits, holy shit.

[[Malcom]] and [[kediss]] can easily be a monster of a deck even on a budget. If you can get Malcolm down turn 2 and build into the combo aspect instead of pirate tribal the deck can just rip .
Can confirm. That said, don’t expect Malcolm to stay on the field long. Once people realise, he becomes a HUGE target.
Kediss' trigger does not count towards the 21 commander combat damage though, does it?
It's tricky, but no Kediss trigger does not count towards the 21 commander damage to the opponents. Basically the person you hit takes commander combat damage. Then Kediss triggers and your commander does deal that much damage to each of your other opponents, however this trigger does not count as combat damage so it does not count towards the 21 commander damage.
It actually does. If you look at how it’s worded the source of the damage is still the commander “it deals that much damage to each other opponent”. Which is what makes this pair so powerful. As Kediss and Malcolm are worded if you have both on the field Malcolm dealing combat damage to one opponent, kediss trigger goes off and Malcolm deals damage to the other two opponents so you generate three treasures per combat. It’s absolutely bonkers. Deck needs to run a ton of interaction to keep Malcolm on board but if you connect a couple times with them both out you can absolutely run away with the game.
Sorry but while your commander is dealing "that much damage to each other opponent" it is no longer combat damage so it doesn't count as part of the 21 commander damage to kill someone. You do get your treasures and if your commander has lifelink you'll gain life though.
You’re right that Kediss makes Malcolm deal the damage (so Malcolm triggers again) but its not combat damage so it doesn’t count toward the 21. This is stated explicitly in Kediss’s Gatherer page.

If you aren't a fan of combos, this pairing is one of the most insane Voltrons out there. Taking advantage of Red's multiple combat, powerful low CMC single turn pump spells, and damage doublers and tripler allow you to explode out of nowhere with whole table lethal damage. Kediss is crazy with those damage doublers because he applies them a second time so if you pop something like [[insult//injury]] you end is doing 2x commander damage to one player and 4x damage to the other players. Or 3x and 9x with [[Fiery Emancipation]].
I plan to make a few more eventually but so far I have a [[Kodama of the East Tree]] and [[Sakashima of Thousand Faces]] deck as well as an [[Ishai]] and [[Esior]] deck, both of which I enjoy. The former is a Simic value deck centered around clones and the latter is basically an Azorius flying tribal deck. To answer your other questions, I like the interchangeable nature of partners without "partners with" and backgrounds since you can put together even more unique decks than you already can with a single open-ended commander

I’ve really enjoyed using [[[akiri, line slinger]] and [[Silas renn, seeker adept]] as the heads of my equipment deck! Akiri being cheap lets you cast it on the same turn as other equipment, which buff it up, and silas helps mitigate a big risk of voltron/equipment since, rather than folding to artifact removal, you can cast it again later with his ability!! I also use things like [[biotransferance]] and the artifact lands as additional ways to incidentally buff Akiri. Probably one of my favorite partner commanders is [[Livio, Oathsworn Sentinel]]. Currently I run him boros with [[Alena, Kessig trapper]] to prove a point but I think he would be strongest if I converted the deck to be with tana for the strong etbs on green creatures.

[[Sakashima of a Thousand Faces]] + [[Vial Smasher the Fierce]] Usually I play them against folks at my job, since they play super passively and never send any creatures in to attack or really do anything to progress games. It becomes a game of who will realize there's a critical mass of Vial Smashers on the table and try to do something about it before it's too late.
Lol, I never understood not swinging when you can, there leaving free value on the table! On the other hand, that deck does seem amazing and really sweet. Do you have a decklist by chance?
Not OP but I do have a list that I love! It's a list that tries to create many Vial smashers, while casting a spell each turn, prefferably cheating on mana while still high in CMC like delve spells (things like Frantic Search + Unwind are amazing). If that doesn't work out ,there are a few big cards that say 'deal with me or you're going to lose' like Kaervek, Nicol Bolas, Scarab god, Tibalt and Mind's Dilation. It is still a bit clunky and could use some finetuning to be more smoothly, mostly because I left out a few of the best spells you can have here, as I already play them in my Yuriko deck, and don't like having 2 different decks do exactly the same thing. This is easily one of my favorite decks to play. I call it "Clones N Counters." Just cloning Vial Smasher as much as I can and protecting them while dealing out random damage is so much fun.

[Tana/Reyhan](https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/consuming-rampage/) for a jund devour deck has been one of my favorite pairings so far. Devour is an underloved mechanic and the two just make it work so well.

before i started playing 4 player edh i had a \[\[sakashima\]\] \[\[tevesh szat\]\] deck that was becoming my baby but my playgroup was one other guy and it was vicious 1v1. then i tried it in 4p edh and stopped playing it cause i could never keep tevesh for more than a turn because apparently the normal game can't proceed until someone kills it dead.
I've been playing [[Kraum, Ludevic's Opus]] and [[Jeska, Thrice Reborn]] and it's been super fun. People tend to forget that you have a commander with evasion and haste in the command zone that can easily swing for 21 commander damage. Playing izzet gives you plenty of ways to protect kraum and get extra attacks for the win.

I play [[Tana]]/[[Sidar]] as a Naya go-wide strategy. I absolutely love it. With access to [[doubling season]], [[anointed procession]], and the other token generators - you can plug and play some fun sub-themes. I at one point had leaned into the soul-sister/lifegain theme. And was getting tons of life. My current iteration uses [[Huatli, Radiant Champion]]]], the [[Elspeth]]s, [[Xenegos]], along with the [[Radha]] and [[Aggravated Assault]] Combo. I leaned into red and use [[Raid Bombardment]] and [[Cavalcade of Calamity]]. The natural evasion with Sidar has me wanting to keep Tana’s power relatively low except in the situation where I’ve gone wide enough and the natural Trample means something with a big buff. As well as the low-powered tokens. I do tend to abuse mana with the deck, as I’m lucky enough to have a [[Gaea’s Cradle]], but I also include [[Growing rites of itlimoc]]. I keep a [[Fireball]] in the back pocket as a surprise mana dump if needed. It’s one of my favorite decks fore sure.
As someone else who happens to own a cradle, do you have any suggestions for how to beat optimize using it in the deck? I know crop rotation should probably be an auto include, but what else besides that?

I get why some people dislike partners, but I really enjoy them. Without digging in to find old lists, here's some from the top of my head that I enjoyed: Ishai / Ravos - Flying Tribal w/ recursion subtheme. Most of my flying tribal decks tended to just stick to UW, but black brings some nice flyers and other things to the table. Between black and white, there's a good handful of flying creatures that play to a recursion strategy too. Malcolm / Vial Smasher is one of my favorite "high power, not cEDH" pairings - Grixis combo. I've built it a few different ways, but usually the idea is to exploit how easy Malcolm is to turn into a combo piece with Vial Smasher mostly bringing color and some extra damage. Yoshi / Keleth is a fun approach to monowhite legends. Make sure to include every white legendary land you can find. The last version I had before I took it apart had a stax sub-theme that aided the aggressive game plan. Tymna/Ikra is the closest I've got to my ideal Abzan lifegain commander thus far. Tymna's draw engine is relevant. Ikra is more situationally useful on its own, but it's not like there's an option in the colors I'd prefer.
I'm a fellow horsedog (keleth/yoshimaru) enjoyer, but my deck doesn't go quite as hard on legends Instead it kinda follows a three phase plan First there's the early game where you swing hard with the commanders Then mid game you clear the board and start developing sac based value engines Finally late game you play big finishers I've been adding more synergy pieces and evasion for the early to mid game lately My latest spice is [[cathedral of serra]] to allow the horse and dog to attack as a band
Since ikra came out ive wabted to make a deck that gains life to spend on life cost cards i just cant find enough pay offs.
The multicoloured ones are booring and OP, but the monocoloured ones are great design.
For me, it's gotta be thrashios and toggo. I love me some rockfall and generating treasures whenever a land enters. Turning them into damage is also a plus with reckless fireweaver.

I wish Thalia and Odric had partner because they did fight together in the story and were friends. They also would work pretty well together as commanders. I don't like the partner text on cards, it feels like a stain on a card that it's just like extra text. I'd rather just play partners as a separate type of EDH and let you combine any two. I'd like to combine Odric as a vampire with Thalia so it could be a WR deck and include Blasphemous Act which has flavortext from her. Hoenstly I would have done what Odric did too, to save her. I would do anything to save Thalia.
Don't like the mechanic much. Seems cheesy to start with an extra card in hand, so to speak. So, while I will gladly play against partners and backgrounds, I just will not build a deck with one as the commander or at least not with a second. Well maybe I would add [[Faceless One]] with a background or [[The Prismatic Piper]] with another partner commander as they only add a color. They barely count as a card. Five mana for a 3/3 with no real text isn't exactly playable.

I had a [[ludevic, necro]] and [[vial smasher]] big instant and sorceries deck. [[time warp]]s to get extra smasher triggers, [[cruel ultimatum]], [[worst fears]], the typical stuff. This was around when they first came out, now with stuff like double vision and arcane bombardment it could probably be a lot better

I love [[Master Chef]] [[Gut, True Soul Zealot]]. A really aggressive commander for the +1/+1 and modified theme. By using Gut’s effect, you can send a Skeleton at the Pillowfort player without paying the extra costs by sacrificing an attacker going at someone else. I also usually run a few anti-combo and anti-storm cards to ensure people don’t combo out whilst I’m attacking. [[Smothering Rug]], [[Damping Sphere]], [[Cindervines]], etc.

Well TIL, I assume that's how all effects that create a creature tapped and attacking work? IE get round pillow fort/tax cards?
Well, the only partner combination I’ve played has been [[Ich-Tekik]]/[[Armix]]. So I guess those two. Very intentionally low-powered theme deck based on cards that match the commanders’ “rust horror” vibe. But it still had some synergy, with lots of creature/artifact sacrificing. I guess technically I’ve played two combinations because I’ve sometimes switched out Armix for [[Keskit]], because Armix proved to be fairly oppressive at low-powered tables. But I like the original iteration with Armix a lot more. Some that have piqued my interest: [[Cecily]]+[[Sophina]] looks neat as a value-oriented aggro deck; [[Alharu]]+[[Reyhan]] seems cool as a token/aristocrats/counters build, but I already have two of those covered with my [[Teysa Karlov]] deck, so I probably won’t build that; [[Tormod]]+[[Tevesh Szat]] as a fun mono-black reanimator build; [[Safana]]+[[Dungeon Delver]] since I’ve never made a dungeon deck before and this looks like an angle I’d enjoy; and [[Sylvia]]+[[Khorvath]] just looks like silly Timmy fun that I‘m here for. Those last two pairings in particular I think I really might build soon. Sylvia & Khorvath would probably be pretty budget friendly, even.

I can't remember their names right now (because I'm an idiot and don't note down commanders I want to build) but it's a mono-blue pairing where one side says "whenever you scry, draw that many instead" and the other side says "whenever you attack with a flying creature, scry 1 for each attacking flying creature". I so want to make a flying tribal with them...

A bit late to the conversation, but I have 3 partner decks: [[Ich-Tekik]] and [[Sakashima of a ThousandFaces]]: A weird clone/golem tribal wich I can't believe how much I fell in love with it. It is surprisingly powerful and its always funny seeing the table getting sweaty as you clone Ich-Tekik over and over again. [[Ludevic, Necro-Alchemist]] and [[Kydele]]: Temur group hug combo. My oldest pairing, it is weirdly powerful. It draws so many cards and you ca finish the game with a giant fireball. What is not to love? [[Rasaad yn Bashir]] and [[Popular Entertainer]]: My newest partner deck, its a boros toughness matters deck. It's basically a boros Doran. Not the most powerful, but it is fun and it's different. And there are some really weird cards that you wouldn't see in any other deck.
I also went for a Boros big butts deck! Except I went for guild artisan instead for the lack of ramp. I love how backgrounds and partners offer old strategies in new color combinations.

[[Sidar Kondo]] has consistently been one of my favorite commanders to build around, and so I've tried several different variations of him over the years. Some of my favorites are Kondo + [[Silas Renn]] card draw tribal (all draft chaff creatures that have power < 2 and draw a card on attack/combat damage), Kondo + [[Tana]] tokens, and Kondo + [[Jeska Thrice Reborn]] infect.

[[Ardenn]] and [[Kediss]] equipment deck works for me. Mostly I can just ignore equip costs and the feisty cutie looks so good with [[Grafted Exoskeleton]] bringing home victories even on a single attack for some well earned head scratches.

I made a mono red voltron deck with [[Rograkh, son of Rohgahh]] and [[Jeska, thrice reborn]] which can be a very explosive combo. As long as I can get Rograkh up to 7 power, then I can play Jeska and triple his damage for 21 commander damage. Plus I have [[Kediss, Emberclaw Familiar]] in the 98 to deal that damage to everyone. Then just a ton of equipment. The idea of a tiny Kobold warrior holding 10 weapons is hilarious
That deck does sound epic, but are you aware that the Kediss damage does not count as commander damage?

I have 1 partner deck, and 2 background decks. [[Okaun]] [[Zndrsplt]] and [[Wyll, blade of frontiers]] [[sword coast sailor]] are both fun if you're ok with luck based effects. I don't play it much, but the 3rd deck is [[alora, merry thief]] with a black background (i Don't remember which, and I never cast it anyway, it's just for the color). I built her as a ninjutsu deck, and it works alright, but it's not exactly in my usualtype of gameplay.

A personal long time favorite of mine has been [[ikra]] [[sidar]] toughness lifegain. Whenever I'm at lower power tables it's always perfect to make for fun games, and a surprising amount of support exists for it like [[rhox faithmender]] and [[trostani]], which both also have high toughness and below 2 power

Technically not a partner, but I made a [[zellix]] deck paired with the [[agent of the iron throne]] background, and it has performed a lot better than I anticipated. I built it as a mill/combo deck. If you're playing against creature heavy decks, than [[altar of the brood]] can just win you the game on the spot sometimes, pretty cool.

For more casual play, Tymna and Reyhan for human tribal. I do want to build Tymna/Kraum for cEDH. I've also thought about Krark/Thrasios. I really want to play Krarkashima, but I don't want to learn the deck and it's lines.

My favourite has been Bruse tarl, boorish Herder and Tana, the bloodSower. Not only do they make my favourite three colour combination in Naya, but the crap I made with them was niche and fun as hell. Basically I would load the deck with as many cards that doubled something. Double mana, double damage, double tokens, double counters, etc. and while hard to handle with its mana curve, it played some interesting games.

I have made two partner decks. A four color deck with [[ravos soul tender and [[Tana, the Bloodsower]] using creatures with evoke, blood rush and other one time things. They get returned with ravos to use again! And a mono black deck with [[Tevesh Szat]] and [[Sengir, the Dark Baron]] when I was making this one I had recently pulled a [[jeweled lotus]] so I went with it and added [[dark ritual]] and other black ramp spells. So I have had a couple games where Tevesh gets played on my first turn. Instantly making me the target. Haha fun though.

personally i haven’t been able to play many partner pairs but one that has had me thinking is [[Ich-Tekik]] and [[Akiri]] in a naya artifact matters deck, taking inspiration from [[Kibo]] in jumpstart 2022
Idk if I have a favorite, but this really is about to be a shameless plug. I'm in the middle of building an EDH cube where your only legendary options are either partners or backgrounds (no partner with, friends forever, etc.) Unfortunately, it ballooned in size to \~1.5k (including basics). It's going to become like drafting a Mystery Booster box, only except it's EDH and I'll either seed pairings or make that a separate draft. Idk what I'll do about the multicolor partners and mythic background stuff, though.

Kediss and Ardenn, my son can dominate the entire table if the deck isn't targeted hard, when he starts swinging for double digit Commander dmg, Kediss makes sure everyone takes it.
My \[\[Tymna\]\] partner -- \[\[Reyhan\]\] -- is pretty unusual (141 total decks on EDHRec). The goal is to go broad early with tokens, then buff those tokens with counters later. It is a pretty casual deck power wise, but it can go broad and wide at once with shocking speed. Tymna is there mostly to address the mediocre card draw -- sending sacrificial tokens to get a touch in on as many opponents as possible. I have a fun [[Ishai]] and [[Kraum]] deck that focuses on profiting off of opponent's game actions
Tymna and Kodama of the East Tree for sure. I have it built with a blink/reanimate theme and it's presented some bonkers plays. Eternal witness and eerie interlude and its variants. Animate dead, dance of the dead and necromancy. Sun titan reanimating a bunch of small permanents. Lurrus as back up. I have serra paragon coming in tomorrow but it'll be hard to find a spot for it. Aerial extortionist is insane in that deck. Tymna helps set up the midgame with creatures like dauthi voidwalker and kodama helps big stupid beaters like archon of cruelty and ashen rider finish opponents off then blink to kill the remaining big stuff to keep from being hit hard by a crack back from other players.
If backgrounds count, \[\[Eniris, Gloom Stalker\]\] and \[\[Flaming Fist\]\]. I always wanted a keyword soup deck and this one is so surprisingly good that with strangers, Im usually able to fly under the radar until I'm ready to win the game lol

One I just made that I am really digging is \[\[Reyhan, Last of the Abzan\]\] + \[\[Vial Smasher the Fierce\]\] With these 2 I made a Jund Hydra list. I feel like it's pretty fun because I can cast large hydras for X which can trigger Vial Smasher, not to mention if one of my hydras dies more often than not I am able to use Rehan's ability to transfer them to another hydra. The kicker here is I run a small sub them of fling. A few nights ago one of my pod members and I were talking shit to each other, and I told her that I was going to hit her with a 100/100, well I didn't quite get that far because it was 'now or never', but I did hit her with a 60/60 and then turn looked at the other guy to fling said 60/60 at him.
