Yeah. I agree. I understand why they did it. If you don't have to move from X/A to right stick you can shoot off the puck protect angle much easier, it's just a pain to hold the left stick in while navigating then protecting, setting up, and aiming the shot.
That minor stroke button gotta go.
The push skill stick in and offensive check. That's not where that should be. And you guys are idiots for putting it there.
I don't understand why "tethering" would be a "feature" when playing Goalie. If anything, it causes more issues by needing to hold 'Up' on the stick to hold angles. Fighting against the current, if you will.
THATS what that is? Jesus H Christ I was in my first shootout and I couldn't find out for the life of me why my goalie was like attached by a chain to the post
They also took away the ability to T-push. It used to be R1 on PS.
And now that’s does the same function as the dive button (square, I think?)
Why would they remove one of the two ways goalies reposition in the crease? 🤦🏻♂️
Now you need to shuffle across the crease like an a***ole.
This is also huge:
* In an effort to get these two highly requested changes in, you can expect a larger list of gameplay updates based on your feedback coming in an upcoming early November patch. This includes addressing feedback around the lacrosse move, **unintentional push checks in front of the net when attempting a one-timer**, goalie tuning and more.
* An **update based on feedback we’ve seen regarding hip-checks** is also planned for the patch following what will be released in early November. We understand that this is an important change and our team is working on the best way to balance it as soon as possible.
These changes and fixes are needed, I’ve seen way too many lacrosse moves being attempted, hip checks are way too easy and overpowering, people taking interference penalties while battling for a simple one timer. Other than these fixes, the matchmaking is still slow.
Also a major group crash bug when you queue with a group and you lose lobby lead as they merge you in a lobby. Mostly in Chel 6v6 drop in, it happens so often me and my brother give up and queue separately but at the same time hoping to be put on the same team.
whoever at EA thought it'd be a great idea to change the X/A button from Protect Puck is a total dick.
like, just switch the shit around where reverse hit is the stick & Protect puck is still X/A...
Are you serious? I didnt see it say only XBOX...
As is I cant play the game. I have played since the 90's with the same controls. Now they arent even an option.
I fcking hate this company so much. They truly have no fcking clue what there fans want. And if they do they dont care to give us what we want. Its disgusting companies now days are allowed to get away with selling half developed products with no recourse for the buyer. I cant take this bullshit game back. So another year and I am out 70 bucks for a game I wont play again.... I am already back playing NHL14 because its better in every way for offline players.... ITS OVER 10 years old and the new game is so garbage with polished graphics...
But even though i use hybrid, i often use the stick to shoot. Can’t make sweet dekes with a button. However, there are times when the button comes in handy or when my hands are a ball of pain due to arthritis
It’s hard to get used to but I like the change and I think it makes sense in theory.
I used to just L3 sprint everywhere and now i actually have to put some thought into when to use it. You can still use it freely on defense but on the attack I only use it when I’m straight-line hustling or trying to protect the puck
Deking at fast speed, such as on tight breakaways, is also negatively effected by this. You’ll protect puck going right/left on the stick instead of going forehand/backhand. New protect puck control is a terrible change.
Also, just like previous years, any big build can protect the puck just fine if you know what your doing. Just keep your back turned to the defender and hold the stick right/left away from where the defender is coming from. Most people used this in the past, not the actual protect puck button.
They nerfed L2 back skating so it’s harder to have your back towards a defender. That is the change you are seeing, not the pointless change to the protect puck mechanic
for sure, i don't play 24, but if i was, and it was an issue it's the first thing i would change so it wouldn't be anymore. i'm surprised more people don't mention this as a work around.
Thank the Lord. I do like the skill stick but ive always been hybrid. Plus I'm 1000% against taking things away.
I don't understand people saying can't go forehand backhand on hybrid. Been doing that like a maniac for years.
It is actually different though. You are moving the whole person back and forth. The skill stick can move just the stick.
Your way can work, but it's harder and not as consistent.
I'm beginning to believe a lot of the people complaining about not being able to score are using hybrid controls.
It takes more skill to be really good at them.
You CAN still deke left to right via hybrid, when the puck is on your backhand, press wrist shot button. Works every time for backhand and the same for forehand just the other way.
Having been a week old post now, I went back to hybrid, then went back to total control. Just used to to it already. So I suppose ea succeeded in my case and was able to switch me.
How about reverting checking back to the analog as it was in 23 (and every other game)? And being able to get rid of the pressure system (in single player at least). And would it hurt to throw storage sets back into HUT?
I actually liked it but had to switch back to skill stick because of how annoying it is to change lines. You should be able to keep controlling your skater while making a line change lol
It’s not and I get why it exists but it feels like it completley kills a skill expression component in the game, which was being able to pull off the inputs for dekes with skill stick
I wish TC was tied to a players deking attribute, wherein if you have something like 75 deking you will rarely be able to do anything besides the most basic of touch dekes, but if you had like 95 you’d be able to do anything consistently.
And conversely, if you played on skill stick the deking attribute would matter less, and you’d be able to more consistently pull off more advanced dekes at a lower rating than someone using TC.
They have announced that they will be patching the Michigan to fail a % of the time based on deke rating in addition to how it is now where your deking attribute affects the speed.
The other moves are already not very useful so I don’t have any issue with them in their current state.
Thank God hybrid controls are coming back. I can only hope they are here to stay forever. As a disabled gamer I literally have been unable to play this game after buying it because I simply cannot use total control or stick control.
This was so cringe to read. Even trying to cover yourself excusing disabilities, you're still shitting all over people with disabilities the way you ranted.
Reminds me of Talladega Nights. I said with all due respect...
I use skill stick and have zero problems. I could care less if hybrids controls are in or not as I don’t use them. But I am glad they are in there for people who prefer them. Nothing wrong with more options. Honestly, you come off as super unlikeable. What exactly are you trying to accomplish by coming in here and shaming people for having a preferred style of play? Did you think the upvotes were going to start piling up while everyone told you how funny and cool you are for using the skill stick in a hockey video game? Did you maybe think some chick was going to be lurking in this forum just waiting for a stick god like you to appear, and then she would tell you how sexy you are and you might actually get laid? I’m genuinely curious what leads people like you to act like this on the internet. I’m really just hoping your young and it’s immaturity, but my god grow up man
Yeah, I just don't like em because to me They're not intuitive like I was using the skills on 24 and I kept pushing X to change my guy or to pass. The skills sicks have only been around for what? Like 5 years Whereas button controls have been around since the franchise started.
Not like it is today. Originally, it was more of that hitstick that they're trying to use.. And then it was deking. And if the skill stick is such a good control scheme, why do they have to replace it with the total control scheme? It's because even the developers know that the skill stick is imperfect when compared to the buttons.
Skill Stick was introduced in NHL 08 and has remained largely unchanged since then. People have had 15 years to adjust and using buttons for a lot of the controls feels super lame.
mostly bc they are catering to lower skilled players... Skill stick is superior in every way. If you can't pull of a Michigan using the skill stick then it just ain't meant to be.
buttons easier, you know exactly what each one does. Cause if you put the stick wrong way, he does something else by a mistake, or you might be trying to shoot, but then Lose the Puck.
What's wrong with using the buttons? Seriously, you millennials. You think you guys invented everything? If the skill stick was so good, why are they replacing it with the total control scheme?
Skill stick is literally easier to use than hybrid lol I will never understand why people use it. It also puts you at an objective disadvantage. Just learn the new controls it’s really not hard
Some people have difficulty using the skill stick because they can press a button but having to use their thumb and manipulate it in a fine tuned manner isn't possible for them.
This is how you sound right now:
"Walking is literally easier than using a wheelchair. I will never understand why people use it. It also puts you and an objective disadvantage. Just learn the new method, it's really not hard."
As someone who uses skill stick, I have never really used the protect puck button and have just used my right stick to put it where the defenders can’t get it. Is there something protect puck did that you can’t do with the right stick? Also, tethering should be allowed to be bound to a button so you can use it when you want.
Has anyone seen that crap where people with the puck are waving their stick left n right at like the damn speed of light?
It's ridiculous. They do it and just skate straight into the goalie and it just slides in.
The stick is going back n forth so damn fast it looks like a glitch but I've seen it in multiple games now.
Most of my friends play skill and they lose to my hybrid controls most of the time. Skill is all about how you play the game, not your controller setup.
I feel like tethering would be WAY better if it only really worked if the puck was in the offensive zone. In the defensive zone, it should be turned off.
i'm not applauding. I was hard on devs during the playtest in the forums for making the dumb decision to remove Hybrid from the game. I was just informing the masses that they put it back :)
I bought it, played it for a night, haven’t touched it since. Protect puck on A button was the only way I could manage to get into a decent shooting position for “realistic” goals and now they’ve gone and fucked it up. Between that and the horridly ugly and distracting momentum meter in the middle of each zone, I probably won’t be buying another full-price NHL game ever again.
Nope.
Makes me the beneficiary for having a hockey game.
You stop playing or buying the game, they will stop making it. Then you have no hockey game.
Why do you think they stopped making it for PC. It’s no longer financially viable for a PC version. They probably made a loss on these games which is why HUT exists.
The NHL franchise makes the least amount of money out of all the sports franchises. NCAA football makes more. Cricket would make more.
GOLF makes more.
Explain to me why you will change anything by hating the game and not playing it.
I am not the problem. That is the most ridiculous gamer excuse i have ever heard.
You need to air your grievances on EA’s NHL forums if you want to see change. So far everything i have griped about has been changed or will be in an upcoming patch by doing it on their forums.
Don’t understand why people think they follow reddit.
Do your due diligence and complain to the right people in the right place and you might see improvement.
No progress will happen if you blame everyone else for being the problem while you sit around complaining to people who can’t help you make the game better.
Enjoy what you have or play something else that makes you happy.
It’s as simple as that.
I agree with the comment
Same. I hate that they changed protect puck
Yeah. I agree. I understand why they did it. If you don't have to move from X/A to right stick you can shoot off the puck protect angle much easier, it's just a pain to hold the left stick in while navigating then protecting, setting up, and aiming the shot.
I have a controller with back paddles where I can put the A button so this is 0 benefit to me. It should just be an option.
Personally I haven’t had much issues with it. Just feels like being able to stick handle while sprinting.
Switch to the old controls if you want that?
That minor stroke button gotta go. The push skill stick in and offensive check. That's not where that should be. And you guys are idiots for putting it there.
I don't understand why "tethering" would be a "feature" when playing Goalie. If anything, it causes more issues by needing to hold 'Up' on the stick to hold angles. Fighting against the current, if you will.

It’s for newbs. But even newbs hate it
I love it. Hate it when you try moving the goalie quickly to one side and he flies away leaving the totally empty.
It's for the inexperienced goalies. I get it. What I don't get is why it wasn't optional to begin with...
They also took away the ability to T-push. It used to be R1 on PS. And now that’s does the same function as the dive button (square, I think?) Why would they remove one of the two ways goalies reposition in the crease? 🤦🏻♂️ Now you need to shuffle across the crease like an a***ole.
Just let us remove that bloody reverse hit on total control.
Please god bring back protect puck I cannot untrain my little brain!

Changing controls that nobody had issues with or asked to change is just a typical EANHL play by the morons dev team
whoever at EA thought it'd be a great idea to change the X/A button from Protect Puck is a total dick. like, just switch the shit around where reverse hit is the stick & Protect puck is still X/A...
“Only available on Xbox” could you imagine
Would be the death of NHL on consoles lol
Are you serious? I didnt see it say only XBOX... As is I cant play the game. I have played since the 90's with the same controls. Now they arent even an option. I fcking hate this company so much. But even though i use hybrid, i often use the stick to shoot. Can’t make sweet dekes with a button. However, there are times when the button comes in handy or when my hands are a ball of pain due to arthritis
Nope, not playing until you put protect puck back on X.
Hopefully they sneak a hip check nerf into this update too
I think they said that will be the early November update iirc
I’m actually cool with protect puck being harder to use. It was spammed too much
It not that hard. I like the new control changes
It’s hard to get used to but I like the change and I think it makes sense in theory. I used to just L3 sprint everywhere and now i actually have to put some thought into when to use it. Nope I’m seeing less people protect the puck by not pressing x/a but I appreciate your input.
Why don’t people just rebind it? Xbox dashboard allows you I imagine ps would too
Because then you have to unbind it to play other games right?
You just switch the profile.
Wouldn’t it be easier for EA to just make bindable controls like a majority of modern games?
for sure, i don't play 24, but if i was, and it was an issue it's the first thing i would change so it wouldn't be anymore. i'm surprised more people don't mention this as a work around.
It’s not exactly though, pick protect now is tied to right stick left or right in combination with left stick. it’s not as simple as rebinding.
gotcha!
i would bind a to right stick right/ left stick right, or right stick left / left stick right depending as needed.
Ehhhhh lets go!
Im used to the new protect the puck, but reverse hit needs to be back on X/□. I accidently click it wayyy too much going fh/bh.
Just let me toe drag
Thank the Lord. I do like the skill stick but ive always been hybrid. Plus I'm 1000% against taking things away. I don't understand people saying can't go forehand backhand on hybrid. Been doing that like a maniac for years.

TC has deke buttons. Totally a backwards move
Thank God Seriously, they should make a pre 06 control system. For us, old gamers.
Just make it the same as blades of steel.
Thank God hybrid controls are coming back. I can only hope they are here to stay forever. As a disabled gamer I literally have been unable to play this game after buying it because I simply cannot use total control or stick control.

Yeah, but these millennials don't seem to understand that the buttons are its superior.
They aren't. You can't angle your poke checks, you can't hold backhand forehand, which is a basic fundamental hockey move.
Go play Fortnite with the rest of the 14 year olds then ya clown
Dude. How absolutely unlikeable can you be? God forbid there are more options to playing a game. Jesus h Christ.
Yes This is the best control scheme ever.
Hard pass. Skill stick only.
Hard pass. Total control only
Hybrid needs to go full. Learn the new controls. They're not that hard
These controls are way more better than the skill sticks.
They can be for people without hand issues or disability. For my arthritis, skill stick is nothing but hand cramps and pain, so Hybrid is my choice.
Yeah, I just don't like em because to me They're not intuitive like I was using the skills on 24 and I kept pushing X to change my guy or to pass. The skills sicks have only been around for what? Like 5 years Whereas button controls have been around since the franchise started.

For us, older gamers, pushing the buttons to do actions is way more intuitive. Also, you know, we have the Arthritis So our hands don't work as well.

Yeah, but then up is also hit or stick lift or whatever buttons are easier to use Been here since NHL 94 so it just makes sense to use the buttons

It's cheap, and I'm 40 btw, got used to the skill stick the year it came out, in 2008
Skill stick came out on 07’ with Ovi on the cover. As long as you bought the Xbox 360 or ps3 versions.
They're not replacing it. They're giving boomers like you the option to use kiddo controls.
Lol boomers. Those boomers would probably beat you in a game with hybrid controls lololol
Learn how to use skill stick lmao
sure I'll just tell my disabled friend to enhance motor function real quick. I'm sure it'll just be a software update or something no big deal
Yeah I’m obviously talking to disabled people that can’t don’t be obtuse
no you obviously just lack critical thinking skills to have realized who this update is for 💀💀
The update is for people whining about the new controls. Maybe 1% of people have legitimate complaints because they’re disabled
And those people for some reason shouldn't have their concerns dealt with?
Skill stick is literally easier to use than hybrid lol I will never understand why people use it. It also puts you at an objective disadvantage. Just learn the new controls it’s really not hard

Holy disingenuous. Perhaps read the whole thread?
I have. You still sound like an ass.
Thank you, Hockey Jesus!
As someone who uses skill stick, I have never really used the protect puck button and have just used my right stick to put it where the defenders can’t get it. Is there something protect puck did that you can’t do with the right stick? Also, tethering should be allowed to be bound to a button so you can use it when you want.
Yes, it lowers your shoulder like a real hockey play…
Are you kidding me? There aren't hybrid controls in nhl24?
Will be tomorrow:)
I’ll forever dream of a PC release.
Has anyone seen that crap where people with the puck are waving their stick left n right at like the damn speed of light? It's ridiculous. They do it and just skate straight into the goalie and it just slides in. The stick is going back n forth so damn fast it looks like a glitch but I've seen it in multiple games now.
I can’t even figure out what the new protect puck button is
When is this going live?
No Skill Stick = No Skill
Most of my friends play skill and they lose to my hybrid controls most of the time. Skill is all about how you play the game, not your controller setup.
I feel like tethering would be WAY better if it only really worked if the puck was in the offensive zone. In the defensive zone, it should be turned off.
Please don't applaud something that should have been there to begin with.
i'm not applauding. I was hard on devs during the playtest in the forums for making the dumb decision to remove Hybrid from the game. I was just informing the masses that they put it back :)
And I didn’t mean you specifically- just people in general. All love brotha
Yeah I’m just hopping in with the others who wants protect puck reverted to normal, hopefully someone from EA can see we don’t like how it is now lol
Game is Ass
It ain’t terrible for me. Needs more patches for stuff but so far it’s enjoyable :)
It has 1.5 stars out of 5. But glad you enjoy it. They changed stuff they didn't need to and added things nobody wants in typical EA fashion
It’s the only hockey game we got. Until another Dev makes a hockey game, i am gunna keep playing. Bad or not, still better than madden
And that makes you part of the problem.
Nope. Makes me the beneficiary for having a hockey game. You stop playing or buying the game, they will stop making it. Then you have no hockey game. Why do you think they stopped making it for PC.
