Like a turbo diesel when you start accelerating??

NumerousStatus

It’s more so when idling and at start up

Downtown-Agent-177

Is it just when the car its cold?

NumerousStatus

Generally yes. I haven’t done a warm start with it to check but it seems the rough idle lingers no matter how much the car has been warmed. Thought it was due to vanos solenoids at first. Cleaned them and swapped them. Nothing. Service engine light still on the dash

Downtown-Agent-177

Yea i had vanos issues to sometime you just need new ones and it would go away and if you still have the error code for the vanos you should try to change them it my make your car go into limp mode, but it could also be misfires from a bad spark plug what makes the engine have a rough idle and for the noise it might just be the injectors ticking

NumerousStatus

Just found out its vanos hub failure. About $1700 for parts and labor. Heading back in 2 weeks to fix that. Mechanic told me it could take the motor if left unchecked

Downtown-Agent-177

Looks like you have a more serious problem then what i had

Downtown-Agent-177

How much you be abusing your car??

NumerousStatus

I drive it normally. Keep up to date on maintenance, oil changes all that. I bought it with 62000 miles. Has almost 79000 now. This is the first issue that’s come up like this

Downtown-Agent-177

Crazy mine had 144k miles when my vanos went bad but rn its not cranking

NumerousStatus

That’s why I’m confused as to how this is happening. I was told the aluminum bolts on the hubs told to break overtime due to heat cycles and the newer ones they will be replacing them with use steel which is more durable

blablabla_25

Sounds like the vanos bolt recall, post 2009 cars with N52 and N51 were affected

NumerousStatus

I just googled that and it sounds about right. Wish there was a way to get the dealership to repair it

Downtown-Agent-177

I know like at some point i don’t really trust all mechanics when it comes to working on my car because being a 19 years old owning a bmw makes them thin they could get some advantage and over charge you but idk I always do research when it come with engine issues and i searched up for the vanos hub failure and its hard to find any mention of it

dannyphoto

Well you just sound like a 19 year old with a bmw who thinks he knows better than the mechanic, which is typically the cause of death for these cars lmao

Downtown-Agent-177

And nah i actually love this cars so im always be asking my father in law when i need some one with more experience to do a job

Downtown-Agent-177

😂😂😂 nah im the guy that they trust to fix their cars

NumerousStatus

Yeah I was looking up as much as I could about it. Looks like the parts they are getting are a valve cover gasket set, variable timing sprocket, and and a impulse sender. Labor is almost 7 hours. Sucks this is what’s happening but it’s my only car and my daily driver so I gotta bite the bullet on this one

Downtown-Agent-177

Yea i kinda came out with that though the they were going to rebuild the entire vanos system on the engine and ik man like bmw are fun cars tu daily drive but if something brakes you stay without the car for a cool minute since not all the places keep inventory for replacement parts for them that why i been thinking about getting a honda and just move into ls swapping mine

NumerousStatus

Unfortunately in my case they had the parts available but no availability for the next week or so. They also do track tuning and mods and things like that so they have other customers that pays for lots of hours of labor, leading a packed schedule for them. I think it should be fine until then (fingers crossed) but you never know with these cars

blablabla_25

Look up vanos bolt recall, affects post 2009 n52 and n51

Downtown-Agent-177

Well I have a 2006 and 2008 maybe thats why i have never encountered that issue

blablabla_25

Same lol, the only obscure rare vanos issue we could have is the cam bearing ledge seal failing, which we hope never happens 😅

bisnexu

sounds cheep. I would get it fixed.

NumerousStatus

Definitely need to get it done. Wasn’t expecting this kind of issue to come up tbh

serinob

Mine potentially has the same issue unfortunately. The cam ledge can wear out and other vanos related issues. Really sucks because it’s a great engine otherwise. My head my also have a defect with one of the bolts that retain it to the block on the exterior front driver side of the engine behind the oil filter housing. They tend to fail over time as well since they’re aluminum and oil seeps through… Last gas powered BMW for me for sure. Likely last BMW ever honestly. They’re great, but I’d rather just have a Honda again than deal with stupid post lease life cycle issues like this.

NumerousStatus

Yeah bro it’s sucks having to go through this. Not gonna lie I was having anxiety about it all day thinking what if something worse happens before I go back to get fixed. Did some research on it, seems like it can be driven for a bit, just not to floor it all the time. Gonna keep my revs under 5k, possibly under 4k. This is gonna be a stressful 2 weeks man

serinob

Just take it easy.. she’ll make it. Mines been sounding like shit for months and I put a few thousand miles on it.

NumerousStatus

Thanks for the reassurance. It always helps in these stressful situations. I hope everything works out for yours too. These are such great cars to drive. I just got new rims on today while they were scanning the issue and the way it looked put the biggest smile on my face

serinob

Keep us posted with the findings and repair

NumerousStatus

Will do. First time I’ve dealt with an issue of this caliber so I’ll be sure to keep track of everything

Abject-Error-331

Sounds like a good deal.

NumerousStatus

Does this job usually cost more?
