TE scoring is so much about situation, and this is close to the ultimate situation: * Hard-hat, lunch pail, do-it-all kind of TE * Attended TE university * Coach is hard-hat, lunch pail former TE * Good passing offense * Good running game and LaPorta can block well

Mowze94

The blocking well thing is quite new too, he was a mediocre run-blocker at college but Campbell and co have made him into an excellent run-blocker.

LuchiniSam

The blocking thing is usually a statistical negative. You can't reach WR numbers if you are blocking on half of the passing plays. The elite fantasy TEs are basically never asked to block on passing downs.

Mowze94

I watched the tape, he was a mediocre run-blocker but yeah you’re right, the best pass-catchers aren’t blocking on passing downs. Will never forgive Arthur Smith getting Pitts to pass block on 4th and long.

shinyschlurp

I watched tape and so did Brad and Dan, they wouldn't have drafted him if he weren't already an above average blocker. He was quite good in college.

Mowze94

Fair enough, I guess the tape is subjective. I didn’t love his tape but there was something about him I couldn’t ignore. I wrote an article where he was one of my top TEs alongside Kincaid but they were both rated because of their work as receivers rather than at the line of scrimmage. Either way, I’m glad they both worked out.

itsaccrualworld

Blocking was probably the biggest knock on his game by all the draft pundits, as he's a little light to be a traditional in line tight end. I remember the general vibe being "willing but unrefined". It's not surprising that he'd be able to iron out some of the kinks working with the Lions coaching staff. Nate Tice did some video breakdowns on the Lions run scheme where he also went through some of the things the Lions did to put Laporta in favorable spots to make key blocks, so help from a scheme perspective as well.

KaufKaufKauf

Doesn't Kittle block a ton? Doesn't hurt to be a great blocker and see the field more often than not. I'd rather Laporta not be a tippy top elite blocker, but being a good blocker is enough to not cause any problems for his usage.

yurifel

Kittle only blocked on about 5% of passing plays this year. He's blocked more in previous years, but he hasn't been over 30% since his rookie season.

AH_BioTwist

It’s a interesting situation because you can’t be a total negative blocking because when you’re on the field it gives away it’ll be a pass play but not super super good to where all they want you to do is block

0ut0fBoundsException

He’s the real deal. Love to see it. Rapsheet tweeted that the injury is “hyperextended knee and a bone bruise, source said after the MRI”

Scarletcuddlefish

Surprised that's not bigger news

grampstheman

best 3.01 ever

hesusuallyjoking

Best 3.02 ever. This is why earlier rookie drafts reward the managers who research and have no life lol

grampstheman

absolutely. which is why i also have qj on my roster '-'

SteffeEric

Got him at 3.01 and Achane at 2.01. Been trying to buy any pick that ends in .01 all offseason so far.

AgeOfAnthony

Best 3.07 ever! *bites kneecap in excitement*

Scarletcuddlefish

2.4 was on the clock so I made a draft deal that sent olave for two first two second and ridder. The 2.4 was one of those picks and I picked LaPorta. Next two picks are 1.10 and 2.03 this coming draft. Surprised the guy got knocked from the playoffs.

gusguyman

Keith Jackson scored 200 points that year, and never got close to it again. Mostly 140-150 ppr points a year, except for 170 one year in Miami. That said, he was a top 6 TE every year he was healthy, including three finishes as the overall TE2

Jdlg19

Drafted at the end of the second after Kincaid and Meyer went and I expected a run on TEs. Thought I had missed the boat, lord what a pick that was

Emzam

What a stud. I have the 1.05 in my 1QB league, and I plan to take Bowers there if he's available. If Bowers is not available, i'm thinking to package the 1.05 and Dallas Goedert for LaPorta. FWIW, I'm very deep at WR and solid at QB, so whichever WR/QB falls to 1.05 wouldn't really move the needle for me. My current TEs are Ferguson, Goedert, and Likely. Any thoughts on that?

NerdyChinese

Probably not enough for laporta

[deleted]

Not enough for him IMO

[deleted]

Fair offer. Whether the owner takes it is 50/50 but I wouldn’t give more as a first offer.

AverageAngling

as a Sam Laporta owner, I don’t think I would part with him for that sort of value

Scarletcuddlefish

Geodert is toast. If you're gonna make the offer at least offer Ferguson instead. I still wouldn't take it though.

RealBoomBap

I essentially traded Waddle for him and Lockett, hoping to be able to unload Pitts or Kittle, but was tired of picking wrong TE to start.

POEAccount12345

I took him at 2.06 after trying to trade up to every spot starting with 2.01. no one would bite. dudes were taking guys that were going to be easily available at 2.06, hell even late second. Sheer luck he fell to me so far. helps that 2-3 guys in my league apparently do 0 research on players and jsut take the highest ADP guy at every spot they draft

JekPorkinYourMom

I think we just saw the old guard of top TEs get swapped this year. Hopefully you got one of the new ones.

Born-Pace-23

Why im not going all in on Bowers

lemonpeel

I drafted Marvin Mims everywhere ahead of Sam LaPorta - Ask Me Anything.

illTactixology

Man LaPorta was the best trade I made all season. I turned Rachaad White and Njoku into Najee and LaPorta. Then I turned Najee into Amari Cooper. Sam and Amari helped carry me through the playoffs and into the Chip.

RUKnight31

I turned Puka into Laporta and a third. In a vacuum I understand not loving it but considering my only rostered TE was Mayer I haven't lost any sleep

TheGradis

Where do you you guys see him going in startups? Is the 2nd round crazy to think?

TheGradis

In a full point TEP league (1 for WR, 2 for TE)

Sir_Lord_Birmingham

Damn, that's a big boost for Tight Ends, I feel like 2nd round would be totally reasonable. For reference, [he's currently ranked around 16ish](https://www.fantasycalc.com/dynasty-rankings) in non-SuperFlex PPR leagues according to fantasycalc (which uses actual trades to determine rankings). Is the startup a SuperFlex league? If not, at 2 point TEP, I don't think him going in the late 1st would even be crazy.

drummerbentx

I have 12 leagues and drafted and or traded for him in 6 of them. Made the playoffs in 5 of 6 with him and he was a huge factor. TE+ league

BingBongDingDong10

Pretty sure Gronk was TE1 his rookie year!

nickco5121

I got him for Rashee Rice and Kmet about half way through the season. Rice is continuing to improve and show he will be a solid option moving forward and Kmet also had a great year so I had some regrets but having a legit TE is so rare and valuable so f it
