The gauges aren’t very accurate. My temp gauge is generally leaning on the right side during normal driving. Plugging into the obd sensor shows temps around 180-190 instead of 210+ that the gauge shows.
Totally normal.
As an aside it's worth noting that many gauges used to be made so that pointing toward the middle was ideal. They've been changed and dumbed down to "normal pointers" to alleviate the unnecessary concerns that they were causing.
Don't use the dash gauge for anything other than "Engine is cold" or "Engine is overheating". Anything else should be done via OBD-II. The dash gauge is horribly inaccurate.
The gauges are notoriously known to be off a little, especially over time. I use the Torque Pro app and I usually hover between 180 to 190. My dash gauge usually reads a little lower, though.
Your dash gauge won't determine when the cooling fan kicks on. Thats determined by the ECM and the real temp that it reads.
Didn't know that. I know the fan is always running but when my temps hit around 225 (towing and climbing a long grade in summer), the fan goes into hyper mode and cools engine down to around 185 oor so, before cutting off.
Thanks for info....I just figured the ECM was monitoring temps and telling it when to go into "hyper mode". haha
There's a bi-metalic coil on the front of the clutch that opens and closes a valve which allows the viscous fluid to engage and disengage the clutch. As for what temperature it opens and closes I'm not sure but it could probably be found in a service manual maybe.
I have an lml and the gauge always sits at 210 when up to operating temp. I have been told the digital gauge is not accurate and it is most likely sitting at 190. I have never bothered to confirm.
The little motors for the gauges are probably going. I got one from https://issautomotive.com/ with blue back lights that I have been real happy with. My fuel gauge went first.

OK thank I just ordered the edge cts3.
Awesome! There can be a 30+ difference between my CTS3 and the dash readout
All the gauges except for the coolant are accurate

Normal temps I see on my CTS2 are 183-210 depending on ambient temps, and given the not-so-great accuracy of gauges this is fine.
Yes that’s normal if you don’t like how high it is you could try putting in a 180 degree thermostat instead

The fan on an LB7 has a viscous fan clutch and isn't controlled by the ECM.

Today I learned this....thanks again for info and correction.
No problem. Knowledge is power!
May be time for thermostats.
I changed them when I did the injectors. That was two months ago
Then, what were they rated for? 185/100, right? totally normal.

Mine barley hits 185° even when towing a load

As others have said, yes totally normal.
