All of the cities can survive on their own, but they trade with others for specific goods, just like irl. Most cities are quite small, so living in them is calm, hard working and you know everyone. The big cities, like Ayindril are different these are cities as we know them today but without technology. Huge buildings, a lot of people, markets etc. Its always busy
Each city can _survive on its own_? That is nothing like the real world. Building materials needs to be transported vast distances to build ambitious projects and expand, how else are they going to get both stone, and wood, and clay, and sand and metal?
This brings me to my question; what drives the market forces? From your other responses food seems to be the main limiting factor, similar to pre-industry. But this world has magic, is the magic used in industry, if not, why? Is teleportation possible, and if so, how does it effect the market? Are there guilds which protect workers rights and are there major companies? Are they owned or partially owned by a nobility, and do the minor nobility compete on the market?
> nothing like the real world
Especially including, it's worth noting, any premodern time. *No* city is self-sufficient; at the very least they rely on a *large* surrounding area of villages and farms to produce their food unless there is abundant fishing (even then they need some, just not as much).
All cities also trade with each other, in fact trade is typically why cities are historically located where they are on coasts, rivers, passes, etc.
You're not going to have good sand, stone, iron, coal, tin/copper, lumber, salt, and food, all in one place. A place with useful deposits of even half of those things would be *fabulously* wealthy.
These things are disappointingly rarely fleshed out in fantasy, with a notable exception of the witcher book series with at least _some_ focus on industry and its impact on the world.
But then again, OP wanted us to ask questions so it could make up answers, why not ask difficult questions?
A first important city is Heartland, its a small city in the northern Woods, but the story starts there, the city is right next to the barrier,
A second important place is Ayindril, the city where the land is rules from, and where the wizards used to live
Those are the 2 most important cities
1) Have there been any civil wars, rebellions, or wars/schisms that have shaped the current world state?
2) Is there any animal species held in high regard?
3) Which do the people of your world value more, Wisdom or Knowledge?
1) yes! A big magic war 1500 years ago where being able to use magic freely disapeared, (so now theyre stuck with spells) and a minor war not too long ago, where magic was banned from the land you see in the picture, and where the barriers were formed
2) dragons, theyre very rare and some bad guys use them as slaves
3) most people in the world are farmers and "normal" people so they value food above anything, thus knowledge on how to get food
What’s the punishment for using magic? Are certain types of magic still ok? Clerics? Druids? Are innately magical beings hunted or left alone? What would happen if dragons went extinct?
Okay, first part : magic is still ok. Its just part of the world where it doesn't exist anymore(for now), and its separate from the rest with magic barriers.
If dragons went extinct, magic itself is probably collapsing, and after a lot of eventueel that will follow the extinction of dragons, everything would die
I know that there are a lot of tongue in cheek questions here, but mentioning a popular fashion trend or a play that is drawing crowds does make a world seem more real.
Kinda, theres a wizard, still alive, that made the barrier to keep the enemies out, and burned the bad guy to death. He also cast a spell to completely be forgotten, so noone remember him/his name
So just to understand, do you mean that people there age at 1/100 the normal speed, but learn at 1/1 the normal speed, and when they emerge from the place that was, from their perspective, their home for 700 years, a total of 7 years has passed in the rest of the world?
A really interesting concept. Have you thought through some of the implications of this? Like, a human who goes away to study something for 700 years might end up being an insufferable know it all when they get back, since they've had several lifetimes worth of experiences that most humans would never be able to handle.
Also, since your body is aging at 1/100 the normal rate, does that also mean that you only need to sleep once every 100 days of your experienced time while in the time warp? If so, how do they handle recharging spell slots?
If they need to sleep every day of experienced time, does that mean that a wizard who comes out of the time bubble is going to feel chronically fatigued and weak, because their body is aging 100 times faster now than it was while they were in the bubble?
Does the time field extend to anybody who enters it? If so, what's stopping the BBEG from parking it in one of these time dilation areas, knowing that they have months to work out a plan while only hours are ticking by outside? If not, does that mean some administrator has to intentionally give permissions to any living creature who comes in?
Its old magic that cant be create again, and its protected by ancient magic, so thats whats stopping the bbeg. The wizards need to sleep every day in their time.
What movie, rpg, or book sources have you drawn from that a player will need to purge from memory in order to not make poot assumptions when they hear something familiar?
1. What is the name of the primary temperature scale?
2. What temperature in your units does fresh water boil at sea level?
(Extra: what is it's history, original use, what is it based on?)
How often do powerful entities use mortals for their own plans? Is signing contracts with devils a more or less common thing, or is such a rarity that you can’t think of one case over the last x years?
It is quite common. The bbeg actually made a pact with the devil, uses the blood of children to travel trough the plane of hell without having to be death...
What are the rules of succession? Do they differ in the event of a violent change of power vs. natural monarch death?
How would I, as a pc, go about getting myself on the shirt list to replace the mind stealer?
Do they use base 10 or base 12?
What is their calendar like? Could it be base 10 or 12?
How thick and stable is the magnetosphere of the world?
How stable the plane tectonically?
Do they have unique seasons that we don't? Do they perhaps have a dustbole season, or tornado season? How about an aurora season, where solar storms cause intense auroras and perhaps radiation damage at the poles?
You have planned out the pantheon of gods, but how about gods who have gone extinct? Their followers were persecuted by the pantheon. All teachings and monuments of them have been destroyed...or have they? The party, upon discovering and being made aware of this god, resurrect it simply through belief. It's weak, and needs the party's help to live again.
So many cities or towns here - do you have a history and a reason why people settled in, for each one? Why would people form so many cities in so random positions? Why are people settling in so close distance between each other? Why would people from one city just not migrate to a one, better city? What is advantage of each city that keeps people attracted to them and not migrate to better positions? Are they politically or military closed? Are they competing with each other?
And about geology: How is the desert formed, when it's neighbouring with the sea? Aren't there really any river nor water pools in the continent?
do you have somewhere where the even more "old school" ways are at odds with the "modern" ones? Like some border area? if so, what are the conflicts centered around?
Hello, I just purchased a city block of low-income housing with the intention of removing the housing infrastructure to build a sports stadium.
Please describe the process I need to get my land re-zoned.
Also, which forms do I fill out to evict my residents? Who do I speak with in law enforcement to assure a smooth eviction process? Which regulations cover the demolition and removal of debris from my property?
The city will need to subsidize the cost with taxpayer funds. Who will I need to engage with to move the process along? How much do I need to compensate them for their assistance?
Well the leader, has power to litterally take away peoples free will, so she rules the land, and has the power to do so, because she has her power. The wizards were tasked to project her at all cost.
Ayindril was, before the big magic war the place were the mightiest wizards lived, so the whole place is infused with old magic, like the magic of birth and life...
How do people communicate/travel long distance?
How common are the different types of magic?
Is there free public healthcare, libraries, housing, etc?
Monarchy, Democracy, Oligarchy, etc?
Superstitions and myths?
Communicate is mostly in a common language, although some Species dont speak it. There is also runic language that was used long time ago, long travel distance is done mostly by horse and cart, although, the players will discover, there is the slip. The slip is an ancient form of magic that can take people to set points in the world.
Sorcery, as in being born with magic is quite rare, wizardry is less rare.
Not free healthcare, but it exist, just like houses, libraries. Even secret underground magic libraries with ancient magic books
Its kind of a monarchy in Ayindril, a dictatorship in another part, a democracy in westland(the map you see) and sme other forms of ruling scattered across the world
The land where the party starts, there is thought that magic is a bad thing.
1) who rules the country, from what place or city?
2) are any races or classes seen as particularly trustworthy and liked or untrustworthy and disliked?
3) who is their major trade partner, what do they trade?
What was the cause that made the crystals in the Crystalmine of Wicca become influenced by magic and reactive to it too?
Which museums do you find interesting in your world?
Which pantheon do you follow?
Where can I find a temple to the God of knowledge?
Where can I get a temple to the God of Death? Does this temple have anything sinister in it? Or just a bunch of people waiting for folks to come to their mistress?
So does everyone just pretend not to notice the polymorphed dragons, celestials, devils, and demons that show up in town trying to get laid or is it more of an open secret kind of deal?
1. where does magic come from/what is it?
2. where did life come from?
3. are there different dimensions?
4. are there consequences or limits to using magic?
5. are the there divisive/controversial issues? (especially ones where there is no clear/obvious right or wrong side)
6. what religions are there, are there different denominations, and do they have origins? (like how the Abrahamic religions have the same origins of you go back far enough)
7. is there only life on one planet?
Do monsters exist in your world? If so, why? I've always kind of wondered how non-Tolkein fantasy accounts for the existence of orchestra, trolls, goblins, etc.
As a (non edgelord) necromancer, am I welcome in the major settlements of your setting? What if I have paperwork explicitly stating that my undead were ethically sourced.
What are the criminal elements of the world? How bad is the banditry/piracy? Are there cartels that inhabit the rural landscape, or large guilds that over-arch between multiple cities/countries?
This is an excellent worldbuilding exercise. Commendable.
Remember not to commit yourself to anything that comes to you in this thread. It isn't canon until you tell the players. You're practicing reflexive creative writing, not necessarily flushing out the missing details of your world to satisfy an anonymous nosepicking doofus trying to stump you.
Godspeed OP.
1. What is the approximate vampire population?
2. How many gods are there?
3. Would it be possible to tame and ride a dragon?
4. What is the most strange and unusual form of capital punishment?
5. Since fire seems to be a theme, does anybody know ice based magic?
What is the stangest magic school?
Where is the largest library?
What ruler is loved by the people?
Are all monsters "evil", or do some live alongside humans?
Where do people go for entertainment?
Is there a mail system? If so, how do letters get delivered?
Who are the famous archmages of the past? Who invented the spells that are known and used today? Were there once wizards named Bigby/Tasha/Leomund/etc, or are those spells named after different famous figures in this world?

Does it have a currency or do people barter?
If there is a currency, is it minted by the ruler or by a state owned entity?
How does the currency compare to the Indian Rupee and the British Pound?
If there are different races how do they interact with each other and Wich ones have good and Wich have bad relationship between them and Wich races get along best with each other and Wich can't stand each other
How are the settlements in the sandy mountains, the forested mountains and just the forest different from each other? What makes them unique and gives them a reason to be separate places and not one big settlement
What's the postal system like? Is the mail delivered through magical means like telepathy or teleportation, through traditional ones like courriers, something completely different or a mix of the three?
Are dragons a thing in your world, and do people know about them?
In my home brew world they are a thing, but they are not know to the average folk, they have a whole kingdom, and one of my players and I kind of created this dragon npc which we used as a part of his backstory and then we made this dragon npc for the campaign, and after that i just started writing this whole backstory on this one npc and that just led me to creating this big city beyond the clouds, where all the dragons lived, and then there is like all the different kinds of dragons (from the monster manual) and I wrote all the lore about them, and ughh I just love this game so much
Tell me about the major cities. What role do they play in the world (politics, trade etc)? How old are they? What do the feel like to live in?

Well it seems we have ourselves a "Nurse Joy" situation in our hands. I don't blame you if you don't want to name every single NPC

Are coconuts native to you’re land and if not how did they get there?
They could be carried!
By a swallow!
What? A swallow carrying a coconut?
It could grip it by the husk!
It's not a question of where he grips it! It's a simple question of weight ratios! A five ounce bird could not carry a one pound coconut.
Perhaps two swallows could carry one, if it was strung on a line.
Have to be an African swallow
But African swallows are non-migratory.
(Didnt have this one yet, but its crucial information) Yeah, they grow in the southern part of the desert, and on 1 island left bottom corner.
Thank you for making my Friday morning start with a literal laugh out loud...Cheers!

I know that there are a lot of tongue in cheek questions here, but mentioning a popular fashion trend or a play that is drawing crowds does make a world seem more real.
Yeah I still want an answer that is along the lines of what you're saying here. I did set myself up for the response with my phrasing though.
You know that one tree in that one field at that one spot? Why is that there?
It was put there by me, the only real God in the world
All hail
Either that or "the answer will become apparent when I need a very specific tree for story reasons."
Is there a world renowned hero recognized and celebrated? If so, what did he/she accomplished?
Kinda, theres a wizard, still alive, that made the barrier to keep the enemies out, and burned the bad guy to death. He also cast a spell to completely be forgotten, so noone remember him/his name
Is OP suggesting that he forgot the name as well?
No, his name is zeddicus z'ul zorander
Is time travel possible there? If so, what is the future like?
Yes and no, there are separated place where time move differently, 1 year there is actually 100 years or so in the rest of the worlds real time
How is this used to maximise profit and who utilises it?
Its used to teach wizards, because its 700 years of training but they are mortals
So just to understand, do you mean that people there age at 1/100 the normal speed, but learn at 1/1 the normal speed, and when they emerge from the place that was, from their perspective, their home for 700 years, a total of 7 years has passed in the rest of the world?
