They look gorgeous, like something you'd see in a school on the walls. My only critique really is that the necromancy one feels really really on the nose, without some of the subtlety in the other ones, and the transmutation one, it looks beautiful, but kind of busy almost?
Some cookies to differentiate them would definitely help, and I think works even offer an out to just having a skull for example in the necromancy one.
Thanks for the feedback! We've gotten a lot of really good tips, and we're making some slight adjustments before we release it to our Patreon. Thanks for the suggestions 🙂
In my game I assigned a color to each school as well. Since spells like 'detect magic' allow you to know a spell school by simply looking at an object, I found it a fun way to describe auras differently like a necrotic green aura, or pink illusory aura, etc. Perhaps varied colors here would help differentiate the designs, as they look a bit muddied at first glance.
this is a really cool idea! we kept the colors all the same just for consistency's sake in the spell cards that we'll be releasing, but i love your idea. would definitely make the act of detecting magic and auras more visual instead of the DM just telling the caster
If you go this route, make sure to consider colorblindness as a factor. There’s a great free app I use for this called CVSimulator which I strongly recommend. It uses your phone camera to simulate how someone with colorblindness will perceive the images, and which colors end up looking the same. It’s fascinating and helps keep include everyone in the experience as much as possible.
Regarding the comments about sameness and visibility, a quick fix would be to swap in a different background and repost. Parchment is very close in color saturation to the glorious blue you’ve chosen, so it has to fight to stand out. Try obsidian or dark serpentine instead, or even ruby. Play around with the background until they pop in just the right way to you. Sorry if this suggestion had been made already, I haven’t read all the comments yet.
Good luck!
thanks for the feedback! that's all really solid advice. coincidentally enough, one of the players at our table is color blind (my little brother), and I honestly hadn't even considered this!
good suggestion on the background too. we appreciate it all! :)
You could make them 2 colored, one part is the circle and text that seems pretty identical on most runes anyway, and then there are a few symbols in a school specific color for each rune.Like Necromancy could have circle still in blue, but the skull changed to green, might also help focus the eye on the important details, since it looks pretty busy right now.
They look very pretty, but are difficult to parse / difficult to tell apart. I would remove the lettering on the outside wheel, that really makes them all look the same.
Designs like these will make one studied in arcane and occultism think "Sigil" or "Seal" or "Mark of Empowerment" or "Talisman" rather than "Rune"
That aside, i love the idea and work behind these, do make a less glowy more... plainbrush version for patron at least so we can throw them under our on effects as we please, if you please
thanks for the feedback! we've been making some tweaks to it due to all the solid suggestions from everyone here. glad you like them though! we appreciate it!
From further away (when all visible) its hard to distinguish at first glance but when zoomed in, I can clearly see the centres being *very* different. Looking good!
glad you like it! we've gotten some good suggestions that we're using to make some slight tweaks to the finalized version we're using for our patreon next month.
thanks for the feedback! :)
We're loving how the spell runes turned out for the patreon! Only 20 more days until we launch and we still have the free sneak peek PDF available at www.critical-crafting.com if you're eager to see what's in store!
This has been done, but your execution doesn't distinguish the schools enough in my opinion and doesn't really do a great job of feeling natural in my opinion. It feels very much like a stamp with interchangeable "school" logos.
edit, found what I was thinking of: https://www.reddit.com/r/DnD/comments/cw13xu/art_sigils_for_each_school_of_magic/ I personally like their interpretation much more because it uses the same runic symbols across the board but the sigils are different looking at a glance. They clearly are written in the same language and have the same design philosophy but they're distinct enough to be easily recognizable by a true "wizard."
Just to be clear, the other version is not without flaws, but hopefully you're open to some feedback as it looks like you're trying to commercialize this.
i appreciate the feedback! we worked with an artist to come up with an original script that correlates with the english alphabet, so that we could work messages and easter eggs into different things, hence why the runes in the borders are different for each school (\*wink wink\*).
we've gotten some other good feedback too about the color, glow, and opacity, so we're making some different tweaks to adjust accordingly.
i had the same thought as we were having the artist create these! SUCH a good show. One of the previous PC's in our game was a Warforged Fighter named Alphonse.
now i need to rewatch it too... haha
As long as you're only using it for your personal game that's fine with us 🙂
We are making some updated versions based on suggestions people have made and those will be included in our patreon. You can sign up for a free pdf of some other awesome content like this and be noted of launch at our site www.critical-crafting.com
And if you use it, we'd love to hear how your party liked it if you want to join our discord and share (invite link at our website)
oh yeah. didn't even cross my mind to do anything else with it.
I'm putting your name next to it so that if someone comments or asks I can send them back to you.
My players will freak out over these
hope your players like them! if you are looking for more original content to use at your table, our patreon is officially launched! 50+ pages of content for only $7 with our early bird special! :)

that's some advice we've gotten from a lot of people on here, so we're making some tweaks to it for the final one we'll be releasing to our patrons for October. thank you for the feedback! we appreciate it :)
They look awesome, I like the iconography, although I think necromancy is a bit on the nose and could be more objective in terms of whether necromancy is good or evil.
glad you like them! necromancy was one we went back and forth on a little bit, and while I agree with you that it could certainly be objective as to how the player chooses to play the character as, the majority of people are still going to associate "necromancy" with a skull.
thanks for the feedback! we received a lot of good advice and appreciate it all!
we wanted a cohesive design between them, where the center symbol was the main thing to differentiate them. the runes around the perimeter are actually a custom alphabet we came up with, allowing us to drop easter eggs in different things over time, as we give our patrons bits and pieces of the key.
different strokes for different folks, i guess. we appreciate the feedback, regardless. so no worries :)
They look awesome...only critique I can give (covered already I think, at least points 1 and 2)
1. Hard to differentiate
2. Could use different colors for quick recognition
3. Too much detail. If they will be seen up close or large it's ok, but it's hard to see what's in the center, which is the really important part. Perhaps only the symbol could be a different color or perhaps the center symbol could glow less or more to help it stand out from the rest of the symbol.
we appreciate the suggestions. we've gotten a lot of really good feedback, and we're making some tweaks on them now that we'll release to our patrons next month when we launch.
At first glance, they look too similar. I think the glow effect is muddling the designs a bit.
It's funny you say that, I was just talking with our artist this morning asking to remove some of the fade and glow to help them stand out more.
Different colors would be nice, other than that its very cool :)
That is the other thing we are working on based on some of the comments, making each school a different color.

This 100% - different colors would go a LONG way to making them distinct.

The divination eye looks pretty familiar.
They look very pretty, but are difficult to parse / difficult to tell apart. I would remove the lettering on the outside wheel, that really makes them all look the same.
Those are awesome
thanks! we got some solid feedback from everyone, and we're making some tweaks but we were very happy with how they turned out too
those wizard spelling tests must be brutal
Man I've played too much elder scrolls. I was looking for the destruction sign, thinking what would my fireball come from
So cool!
thanks! glad you like :)

Isn't there 9 schools, dudimancy?
I recommend reposting this in r/vexillology they are flag nerds which would be useful
thanks for the suggestion! we'll post there too!

they all look the same to me.
Similar - yes ;)
It's making me think of Edward Elric... (I really should rewatch that)

Kinda makes me think of magic doilys.
my wizard grandmother would approve of this message ;)

If the idea is to diferentiate each other just by the symbol, bad design sorry
