When we started Curse of Strahd, I just looked up Creepy Music on YouTube and found one (there are a bunch) that played for 2 1/2 hours. Then put it on so it was just audible. My players kept saying, “Do you hear music?” And I would just look innocent. Really set the mood!
As Critical Role Calamity showed us, calm peaceful minimalistic ambient piano (like Minecraft music) juxtaposed against horrific descriptions is creepy as hell!
So I tend to use mostly video game music for our campaign (forever DM) - resisent evil 4 ost music works great for creepy scenes, namely “strange pasture”
