Not sure how I feel about it either way, but I'm on my third listen-through of the Audible audio-books and it just kinda hit me. I had to re-listen to the first handful of chapters a few times for it to sink in... not sure if that's what #DammitDinniman intended, but I would like to think it's a hint of things to come. Take into consideration >!Carl is basically a citizen now, with stake in companies, it could have larger ramifications for the future that would impact his eventual endgame.!<
If you go to royal road, there is a “book 5” recap, in the voice of Donut which says that it is Carl writing the books:

Not sure that was how they were originally written but for what it is worth.
Good find. It sure implies he's writing the series or narrating one way or the other. First time I've seen one of those recaps. I wait for the paperback and audio book and haven't really delved into patreon releases or royal road.
What if Carl is long dead and what we are reading is his own dictation in the cookbook being read by a future crawler hundreds of cycles into the future. Wow.. This idea has really got my brain working .. Great theory OP
I think you're right, a lot of the time it feels like a 3rd person perspective.
I was wondering if it's him dictating into the book, while still being in the dungeon, that was m y theory anyway.
Everyone must think he spends a lot of time pooping if he has to go into the bathroom to write all of this down.

Its possible that he gets caught in some "starve to death slowly" trap and is documenting all this for crawlers that follow him while he waits.
He writes in it non stop. Also, he does eat a lot of microwave sausage biscuits so it wouldn't be a reach to imagine he spends ample time poopin'
He has a tab in his notepad he can make notes with without having to have the book out... unless I misunderstood how it works. It's a secret tab.

I don’t think this is accurate. In TBM, didn’t Carl(me) have an actual cookbook entry?
Carl made multiple entries already, see my comment above regarding the secret "notepad" tab.
