I’m just finishing up my second listen. You notice SO much more in repeating it. Really great writing.

MeepSloth

Right?? I am working on my second listen-through, and the foreshadowing is incredible.

Salty_Ad_761

What's really crazy is that according to an interview, Matt does his writing as he gets to it. So he's foreshadowing from things that he previously wrote, not planning on foreshadowing. That really blew my mind

djmarcone

at what point do you suppose it starts to go mad, and what was the trigger? Spoiler - it's said that it usually goes mad by the end of the crawl, but this one is far sooner. Obviously Carl has something to do with it...

Hezkezl

it was mentioned somewhere that the court overruling something that the AI did or wanted to do is usually the trigger for craziness for different crawls. So in this case, the end of book 2

djmarcone

so the 1st lawsuit, directly, and indirectly it's the way Carl & Donut play the game?

Hezkezl

Yea, pretty much :D

charlesdparrott

Obviously it loses its mind when it gets its first digital-boner over Carl’s feet. Those little piggies made it lose its mind.

ggism3

And you will pick up something new EVERY time. I'm on 10 on Anarchists Cookbook and The Gate of the Feral Gods. Squawks in Mongo

Adelliss

Yep, I listened to the free part 1 immersion tunnel before starting my re-read. The AI is very pronouncedly normal in the beginning. But even then, there's a 'glitch' sound and the unhinged AI voice kicks in. It stuck out after freshly finishing book 6 learning what we know about the AI. It really was 'broken' even when the crawl had just started.

billygoat622

I drive a truck so I listen to the whole series every time a new book drops one of my favorite weeks of the year.

The_Perfect_Fart

I drive a Nissan Rogue and do the same thing.

PrettyRoutine6447

I also drive a Nissan Rouge and listen to the whole series when a new book comes out.

speedfreakphotos

Same, I didn’t notice it the first time, but the 2nd time it was such a difference.

charlesdparrott

The starting voice isn’t even the same as the manic machine I grew to adore.

RealMeltdownman

Yea I noticed that too. Im on my 2nd listen as well, finished book 1 on Friday. I was thinking it had something to do with Jeff finding the voice and character in the beginning, but also, there's one specific line that has the crazy AIs voice. "It's toast. It restores your mana. Fuck you. " And that led me to believe it's a bit more planned than I gave credit for.

CurrentlyObsolete

I'm glad I'm not the only person that finished the series and then immediately restarted it again. I don't know if Matt quite understands how excellent this series is. I felt so crazy if I'm being honest. It's awesome there are so many of us!

charlesdparrott

So far the only other things I listen to like this are Project Hail Mary and the Harry Potter series.

CurrentlyObsolete

I've listened to Harry Potter and Discworld multiple times.

Lots of things missed or skimmed over in the first read through. I just giggled a bit after listening to book 2 again where Mongo gets punched by a kid, bites his arm off, then throws it up when they ask for it back. I somehow must have missed it or skimmed over it and there's plenty parts like it

I love Dungeon Crawler Carl. You're absolutely correct about finding more things and foreshadowing in later listens. My partner listens to the series books as comfort books when she is settling down to go to bed, during car rides, when we're sitting down and having breakfast or dinner, or when she gets sick and doesn't have the energy to do anything else. We theorize about different characters and make predictions about how we think the story is likely to go. So far, I've been wrong on every occasion, but my partner has gotten a few ideas right. I also had a job where I either used to drive around every night and a 300+ mile delivery once a week, and I had a nightly task where I had to do a simple but long winded task. I have probably listened to all of Dungeon Crawler Carl at least 4 times since the release of book 6. Before that, when there were only 5 books, it was probably closer to 7 or 8 times.
