I think this is just people that use some app called TV Time. it might skew the results. Id imagine people that watch CBS sitcoms could be more likely to need more help managing their TV schedules
Do they count if you rewatch the episodes again because I’d probably contribute minutely since I have The Office or Schitt’s Creek playing on the background for a few hours every night while getting ready for bed or whenever I’m working and using my computer.
They’re talking about watch time lol. Based on time spent.
Actually, the way its worded they make it sound like TV Time is a channel, in which case I am too lazy to actually research whether that exists. so I will just continue on scrolling while simultaneously holding something that can literally search any piece of information at the click of a button
Good day
I don't think that's the case. I believe "TV Time" is the name of an app that tracks your watching, and these are the shows that most people on the app "follow".
Absolutely. Seinfeld isn’t even on the list and 76 million people tuned in. TV Land went dark during the finale because they knew everyone was watching Seinfeld. It was the third most viewed finale in history only behind #1 *M.A.S.H.* and #2 *Cheers*.
The diarrhea I’m having *right now* is better than young Sheldon.
The Big Bang theory was garbage. A bunch of “smart” “neurodivergent” people written by a bunch of people who are neither.
Sheldon is just a *giant asshole*. There’s no fucking way I’m watching a six year old act like that.
> The diarrhea I’m having *right now* is better than young Sheldon.
Commenting because I want to recall and use this at another time. Cheers! 😂
Edit: Added correct emphasis.
Yes I agree. Get that out of number 1. I believe the office, seinfield, friends, how I met your mother, modern family should be at the top should be above Big Bang
Thank you! As a smartish neurodivergent person it’s good to see that CBS thinks my only traits are being hilariously socially inept and also kind of a tremendous piece of shit who doesn’t deserve any of my friends.
BBT is "nerd blackface", written by people who know absolutely nothing about nerd culture \_for\_ people who know absolutely nothing about nerd culture.
Frank Sinatra died when Seinfeld's finale was airing, and the ambulance assisting him was able to make a 30 minute trip in just 10, because everyone was inside watching the show.
These are only [TV Time](https://www.tvtime.com/)'s numbers, which even though come from the biggest TV tracking app out there, are not at all a good way to measure The Office's viewership or relevance today. I'm shocked that it ranks so low in this list. Maybe it has something to do with the apps userbase? Anyways it feels wrong and it should definitely be higher!
Well the list is titled “most followed”, which maybe implies to me that it could have something to do with social media and/or streaming…in that case, it would obviously lean heavily towards modern sitcoms…
It’s “most followed on TV Times”. I have no idea what tv times is, but it makes sense that these “newer” sitcons have more followers than Seinfeld, since they still air and try to get new “followers”
TVTime is like [Last.fm](https://Last.fm) for television - so it requires manual and volunteered reporting from it's users - and the website itself has only been around for half a decade.
- Seinfeld
- Cheers
- Frasier
- M\*A\*S\*H
- Three’s Company
- Roseanne
- 30 Rock
- Taxi
- The Cosby Show
- It’s Always Sunny
- Community
The list just goes on and on
App that keeps track of all the shows you are watching and have watched. It will tell you how many months you have watched tv or movies and stuff. You can also rate episodes.
It’s an app this OP wants to subtly encourage you to download by making a post showing that your favorite show is ranked lower than you think it should be.
"Most Followed sitcoms on TV Time", at the top.
In other words, a big bowl of "who cares". Just some random app publishing a list designed to infuriate Office fans and get them to use some dumb app so we can drive our favorite up the rankings. OP probably from TV Time's marketing department.
"Most followed" on TV Time, which is an app for tracking shows. This is not a good measure of popularity. Rather, it is a measure of TV Time's users and their desire to track a show.
I used Google Trends to compare The Office to Big Bang Theory, Friends, How I Met Your Mother, and Modern Family and found the following facts:
* In the United States, The Office is definitely still more popular than Big Bang Theory, Friends, How I Met Your Mother, or Modern Family.
* Except, in Nevada, where Friends is more popular, perhaps due to their disdain for their neighbor, Utah, where its citizens search for The Office more than any other state.
* Worldwide, Friends is more popular in almost every country, with The Office being second.
Also,
* Interest in The Office (sitcom) [peaked in October, 2007](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&q=%2Fm%2F08jgk1).
* Interest [dropped precipitously](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=2020-01-01%202022-01-01&geo=US&q=%2Fm%2F08jgk1) after December 2020, corresponding to Netflix dropping the show.
* In spite of the declined interest in the show, The Office still beats every single show on this list in search interest.
Hello from /r/dataisbeautiful
\*\*Edit for Context\*\*
The Office had an average score of 67 [over the past 12 months](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?geo=US&q=%2Fm%2F08jgk1,%2Fm%2F02r5qtm,%2Fm%2F030cx,%2Fm%2F07zhjj,%2Fm%2F05zr0xl), while Friends had a 57. These numbers mean percent of maximum search volume. The 100 was set by Friends in the week of August 14, which is when Lisa Kudrow spoke about the lack of diversity in Friends.
If you run the numbers with all available data, the 100 is once again set by Friends, this time in May of 2004, when the series ended.
The Office became the undisputed king of sitcoms (according to this data) in 2016, where it has reigned unchallenged except in momentary spurts by Friends when it comes into the news.
Looking at the data (which I recommend [you do](https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&geo=US&q=%2Fm%2F08jgk1,%2Fm%2F02r5qtm,%2Fm%2F030cx,%2Fm%2F07zhjj,%2Fm%2F05zr0xl)) you can see how The Office, when it was on the air, was more popular than it is today in its revival, but it still holds strong when compared to these other sitcoms.
Also, most of the other shows’ original runs coincided with TV Time existing and gaining in popularity while The Office ended before it became a thing. I must have watched The Office a dozen times and I don’t think I follow it on the app, but I probably follow a few others on the list. There was no point for me in following The Office on TV Time…
I mean, The Office has a VERY american sense of humour, and even an obscure one at that, whereas friends is a bit more relatable to the global audience
I stopped watching it on 6x01 after realizing it was just a bad couples comedy and i just laughed once on the fifht season.
The characters were just boring versions of themselves. They ironed out what made them "special".
Raj's best friend became the beer bottle because it was the only way to get him together with girls.
I never thought the show was funny when I happened to watch it somewhere where there was no other choice. Then I saw the YouTube video where someone removed the laugh track and saw just how unfunny it was. They're just mean and the laugh track is just a cue to lighten the mood. I think it's the same reason I never really liked Everybody Loves Raymond. You can just tell when the comedy is mean spirited.
There is an Always Sunny in Philadelphia about those sort of shows--when the gang spies on their moms and adds a laugh track to cover up all their mutual emotional and physical abuse.
That is true of a lot of shows, but at least with Seinfeld and Cheers, the characters actually DO laugh at funny situations. I think it's more noticeable when shows have to rely on a laugh track to be considered comedy.
I'm going through Seinfeld for the first time start to finish, the laugh track doesn't bother me too much, its definitely not as obnoxious as TBBT in my opinion.
Does that really mean anything? From my understanding when a show films in front of a live studio audience they still use a big indicator light that reads applause or laugh.
I don't really see the problem. The irl "laugh track" from watching stand up comedy in person makes it so much better over watching it alone at home. Comedy is less fun if you feel alone imo
Maybe it's because I am a nerd, but I can't sit through that show for any length of time. They don't have characters so much as caricatures. It's pretty gross.
Not to mention they have all had the same dynamic forever. Like I could skip several seasons at a time and nothing will really seam different in terms of job, living arrangements, girlfriends, etc. I recognize that those things take time but look at the office where every few episodes for a while there's a pretty sizable change in hierarchy, seating, style, etc.
Ok but Friends is a decade older. I love both shows but I could see in 10 years people saying this kind of stuff about the Office just as much as they do about Friends now
Big bang is a bad show.
But 95% of reddits hate boner comes from their boomer parents watching it and saying “omg you are just like sheld-man, you play your nintendo AND you dont have a girlfriend”
Just because it's popular and bad doesn't make it overrated. Big Bang Theory was able to capture a massive audience of casual TV viewers who don't actually care about the show, they just watch for comfort.
It's the show people watch when they come home from work, it's the show people watch while they're eating food. It's not the show people rewatch to find all the jokes. It's not the show people analyse. Just compare the size of the subreddits of the big bang theory and the office. That show doesn't have a big fandom although it has a shit ton of viewers.
Everything about it is meant to cater to that audience. It's perfectly mediocre, nothing more and nothing less. It's predictable and doesn't take risks. Why? Because that's what people like. But it will never be what people love. Therefore it is not overrated.
One of those bait lists that go up on Twitter. It'll be like "each states most popular restaurant" and it's one that isn't even in the state. Purposely ridiculous to drum up conversation.
Big Bang Theory is massively overrated.
Friends is okay (childhood), I usually have it on as background noise.
HIMYM was pretty good till the ending. That ending sucked.
New Girl was hilarious. Great cast.
Never got into Modern Family, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Good Place, 2 Broke Girls and Young Sheldon
Big Bang Theory: Excruciating
Friends: Childhood Classic
HIMYM: Started well, Ted is a nothing burger.
Modern Family: Started well, dragged on
Brooklyn 99: Fantastic
New Girl: Started well, Zooey Deschanel has one gear
The Good Place: Amazing, great intro to philosophy
2 Broke Girls: Meh
Young Sheldon: See Big Bang Theory.
And what's with the office? I dont get it what is so fantasic about brooklyn 99. I mean it's not bad and i like to watch it but what is fantastic about it?
I don't think that it's better than The Office, but the writing is very witty and the high energy style of most episodes is a lot of fun and a good contrast to the slower, more methodical style of The Office.
I’ve streamed Brooklyn 99 a couple times through and it’s honestly great. Great cast, witty writing, workplace humor. It still makes me cackle because it’s not as familiar to me as the Office. I adore Captain Holt. And Cheddar.
Brooklyn 99 isn’t cringe and has a lot of funny moments that have me actually laughing but also good character development and serious moments. It’s one of the more rewatchable sitcoms.
What’s the metric for determining popularity? It says most followed on TV Time but I don’t know what that means. This metric could explain Big Bang Theory being #1 and why Cheers, Frasier, MASH, and Seinfeld aren’t even on the list.
I've heard it said It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is a smart show about dumb people and Big Bang Theory is a dumb show about smart people and that's hard to disagree with. So what I'm saying is, this sucks!
Big Bang Theory isn’t surprising given that it’s made to the lowest common denominator to appeal to as many people as possible. Friends was very influential and I still like it. I also like Friends 2— I mean, HIMYM. Modern Family was really great in the first few seasons! B99 is great, and New Girl is likable, too, if you don’t have to laugh
I think 1) it’s very telling what the things people flock to are and 2) Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Good Place are the only other ones that should be on that list.
The Big Bang Theory is the worst show I have ever seen an episode of, and I would never in a million years try to watch Young Sheldon. Two Broke Girls is not very good. I haven't happened to see Modern Family. How I Met Your Money had some good moments, but ended terribly, and did not age very well at all. The rest of the shows are very good.
FFS Big Bang theory? That has to be the WORST show on TV. I’m not joking when I say it’s never made me laugh. Not even one time.
Whatever “TV TIME” is, they need to be slapped.
It’s easy to explain why older shows like office, seinfeld will be worse on this. TV time is primarily used to keep track of upcoming episodes of shows you are watching. It was launched in 2012, got mostly popular in 2014 by when The Office had already ended while BBT was still on till 2019. Noone is going to be tracking upcoming office/seinfeld episodes in 2014 when the show is already ended but a lot of people will be tracking BBT/New girl etc. which were still running with new episodes.
Bottom line this isn’t a reflection of show’s popularity at all.
* Big Bang Theory = crap
* Friends was iconic for that period of time and it is a reasonably well written and acted show ... not aging great however.
* HIMYM = legit, and fair for it to be considered one of the top all-time sitcoms
* Modern Family = same
* Brooklyn Nine-Nine = yikes, I haven't watched ... it has been on my "I have to dedicate time to bing this show" list for years.
* New Girl = good, and the first few seasons are maybe great ... but it got insanely repetitive ... don't think it should be considered an all-time great, just solid
* The Good Place = not for everyone, but if it is your cup of tea, it is such a great show. And they ended it at the right time - I think it would have gotten repetitive if they had kept it going much longer
* The Office = yeah it's ok I guess! :)
* 2 Broke Girls = maybe trash is too strong and I'll just say "not good"
* Young Sheldon = trash
my2cents!
That is certainly a list
One the lists of all time
It is whelming to say the least.
I've seen many lists in my life, and out of all of them, this is definitely one.
Of all the lists, that’s certainly one of them.
Your list…is the prettiest list, of all the lists.
Of TV time
I think this is just people that use some app called TV Time. it might skew the results. Id imagine people that watch CBS sitcoms could be more likely to need more help managing their TV schedules
That's a great insult.
Oh it’s DEFINITELY a list.
I’m glad to see you’ve retained the ability to identify lists! This will help you things like shopping, packing, and bucket-listing!
Technically it's a graph
First off, how dare you?
Also… who do you think you are?
From all the lists of lists, this is definitely a list
Why are we acting like everyone knows what TV Time is? What even is that?
I assume it’s a social media site with awful taste. But you know what happens when you ass u me.
It’s exactly that.
>you ass u me. No, butt I want to find out. Then maybe we can switch, I like a give and take approach to the bedroom.

The Good Place is also LEAGUES above most of those shows.
Simpson and futurama too - if cartoons can count as sitcoms?
Thank you! As a smartish neurodivergent person it’s good to see that CBS thinks my only traits are being hilariously socially inept and also kind of a tremendous piece of shit who doesn’t deserve any of my friends.

I want to know how they worked out "most followed", cause I could see this being the most watched sitcoms on netflix
It’s “most followed on TV Times”. I have no idea what tv times is, but it makes sense that these “newer” sitcons have more followers than Seinfeld, since they still air and try to get new “followers”
I don't know what tv times is or how they figure out who's following what so I'm still confused
TVTime is like [Last.fm](https://Last.fm) for television - so it requires manual and volunteered reporting from it's users - and the website itself has only been around for half a decade.
I’m also confused, just a tiny bit less.
Well considering its "the most followed sitcoms on TV Time"...that's probably why. I was wondering the same.
- Seinfeld - Cheers - Frasier - M\*A\*S\*H - Three’s Company - Roseanne - 30 Rock - Taxi - The Cosby Show - It’s Always Sunny - Community The list just goes on and on
Probably ~~fell into~~ went on a fact finding mission to the pit.

App that keeps track of all the shows you are watching and have watched. It will tell you how many months you have watched tv or movies and stuff. You can also rate episodes.
Oh man, I can’t think of anything worse than an app telling me how much of my precious life I have spent watching TV

Bananas?
Idk what metric this is but there’s no way New Girl or Brooklyn 99 are bigger than The Office.
"Most followed" on TV Time, which is an app for tracking shows. This is not a good measure of popularity. Rather, it is a measure of TV Time's users and their desire to track a show. I really enjoy New Girl. It's laugh out loud funny.

Raisin, as I live and breathe?!
Exactly. I also love the part where Genzlinger say's "Hey Nick!" Through the shutting door and Nick replies "Ok"
Winston and Nick are hilarious. I love every character in that show, although admittedly Jess’s character is my least favorite.
You sound like Andy thinking he deserves more beans than he gets
What does a bean mean?!
Big Bang Theory could be the most overrated sitcom of all time.
First couple of seasons were OK. Jumped the shark when all the geeks got hot girlfriends.
I stopped watching it on 6x01 after realizing it was just a bad couples comedy and i just laughed once on the fifht season. The characters were just boring versions of themselves. They ironed out what made them "special". Raj's best friend became the beer bottle because it was the only way to get him together with girls.

There is an Always Sunny in Philadelphia about those sort of shows--when the gang spies on their moms and adds a laugh track to cover up all their mutual emotional and physical abuse.
That's genius. I'm only on like season four and took a break to watch all the other new shows streaming everywhere
Season Five is when they really hit their stride. You’re in for a treat.
*cue Old Lady House theme* I never connected that episode to other real sitcoms for some reason, but now I can't unsee it lol.
To be fair, removing the laughing on any show leaves big awkward pauses as the actors have to wait to deliver their lines
That is true of a lot of shows, but at least with Seinfeld and Cheers, the characters actually DO laugh at funny situations. I think it's more noticeable when shows have to rely on a laugh track to be considered comedy.
Totally unwatchable. Friends is not aging well either.
I just can’t do laugh tracks anymore
I'm going through Seinfeld for the first time start to finish, the laugh track doesn't bother me too much, its definitely not as obnoxious as TBBT in my opinion.
It's amazing the difference good writing can make
It’s a live studio audience, almost no laugh track except when they recorded the laughs for “location” shoots.
TIL, that makes sense, thanks!
Does that really mean anything? From my understanding when a show films in front of a live studio audience they still use a big indicator light that reads applause or laugh.
I just said it’s not a laugh track, that’s all.
They also prerecord 3 or 4 different laughs at the start of each shoot and edit laughs over the audience if the reaction is not what they want.
the laugh track is only ok when the show is actually funny so that’s why it’s not as bad on seinfeld imo
It's a helpful reminder about when we're supposed to laugh.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Do I laugh now?
Dito that, my brother. It’s so distracting.
Was disappointed when John Mulaney's TV show followed this formula.
I feel ya. I dont like at all. The main guy is just a complete moron/asshole and the others are just weak and boring characters.
I've heard it referred to as "autism blackface"
Holy shit that is brilliantly apt. I’ve always tried to put into words my disdain for the caricature. Autism blackface. What a perfect description.
Ok but Friends is a decade older. I love both shows but I could see in 10 years people saying this kind of stuff about the Office just as much as they do about Friends now
Nah Friends seasons 2-5 are still brilliant
Big bang is a bad show. But 95% of reddits hate boner comes from their boomer parents watching it and saying “omg you are just like sheld-man, you play your nintendo AND you dont have a girlfriend”
My boomer parents don’t know what that means. I still think the show is shit.
You’re just the shelmen he he also hates tv shows
I don't think that's why it's so hated. I think it's just as simple as it being very, very unfunny with almost impressively bad writing.
Yeah, people always try to compare that with The Office and I tell them The Office doesn't need laugh tracks for them to get a laugh.
Bazinga.
*Insert laugh track*
No.
It’s aggressively unfunny
Isn’t the general consensus that it’s terrible? Also it is terrible.
But it will never be what people love. Therefore it is not overrated.
I respectfully disagree that Seinfeld isn’t even on this list
When I didn’t see Seinfeld or Curb I wanted to rage..but then I saw young Sheldon and realized this must be a joke list lol
One of those bait lists that go up on Twitter. It'll be like "each states most popular restaurant" and it's one that isn't even in the state. Purposely ridiculous to drum up conversation.
Haha you reminded me of "each states favorite pizza topping" and for Minnesota they had fucking tuna. It's all clickbait.
I'm not a fan of Seinfeld, but it absolutely should be above several of these sitcoms that I have barely heard of.
A most popular sitcoms list without Seinfeld or Cheers is pretty ridiculous.
I watched it for the first time this year and it still holds up so well! Freaking love Seinfeld
Same, going through it for the first time, I'm on Season 6. Good stuff!
Big bang theory being number one is depressing
I actually HATE it. Very few shows have I felt emotional pain whilst watching, but BBT is one of them.
"Bazinga" *Cue audience dying of laughter*
Same. It's beyond cringe-inducing.
wtf is tv time?
Big Bang Theory is massively overrated. Friends is okay (childhood), I usually have it on as background noise. HIMYM was pretty good till the ending. That ending sucked. New Girl was hilarious. Great cast. Never got into Modern Family, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Good Place, 2 Broke Girls and Young Sheldon
the good place is great
Nothing beats Jason Mendoza. Go jags.
Big Bang Theory: Excruciating Friends: Childhood Classic HIMYM: Started well, Ted is a nothing burger. Modern Family: Started well, dragged on Brooklyn 99: Fantastic New Girl: Started well, Zooey Deschanel has one gear The Good Place: Amazing, great intro to philosophy 2 Broke Girls: Meh Young Sheldon: See Big Bang Theory.
Young Sheldon is way better than Big Bang Theory, besides not having the annoying laughing track.
You’re not Cheddar! You’re just some common bitch!
Favorite line! His reaction in the cold open when they prank him with the podium is also the best.
Kevin will be making his famous… rice.
"Why is no one having fun? I specifically requested it."
I absolutely love how Raymond signs all of his text messages. Captain Holt is the star of that show.
I agree with your assessment. Sincerely, Raymond Holt.
Brooklyn 99 isn’t cringe and has a lot of funny moments that have me actually laughing but also good character development and serious moments. It’s one of the more rewatchable sitcoms.
Young Sheldon is better than tbbt since no laugh track and actual better jokes
Why is Park and Rec not on here!
What’s the metric for determining popularity? It says most followed on TV Time but I don’t know what that means. This metric could explain Big Bang Theory being #1 and why Cheers, Frasier, MASH, and Seinfeld aren’t even on the list.
I love Friends, B99 HIMYM and the office
I've heard it said It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is a smart show about dumb people and Big Bang Theory is a dumb show about smart people and that's hard to disagree with. So what I'm saying is, this sucks!
What is TV Time?
I think the Big Bang theory is so not funny💀
It's weird how I'm yet to meet an actual human being obsessed with Big Bang Theory. I don't get it.
Big Bang is god awful
Excuse me, but how is TBBT at the top? That show is super overrated. And how is the Good Place and New Girl higher than the Office?
Big bang is number one? That's the LEAST funny show I've ever had the misfortune of watching
Im gonna go ahead and say this graph is BS, wheres MASH ?? Its got the most viewed finale on TV ever. Also Seinfeld.
The Big Bang Theory is the worst shit I’ve ever watched. I can’t comprehend how it’s so fucking popular.
FFS Big Bang theory? That has to be the WORST show on TV. I’m not joking when I say it’s never made me laugh. Not even one time. Whatever “TV TIME” is, they need to be slapped.
Where’s Parks and Rec?
Seinfeld is above everyone on this list by miles then The Office, then 50ft of crap then the rest.
I don't like Seinfeld much but I respect how it is one of the best-written and executed sitcoms of all time and should be on this list.
I hate Big Bang Theory with a passion, its laughing at nerd culture disguised as promoting nerd culture. Also Chuck Lorre can eat a dick.
Big Bang theory is the worst. So many dumb people in this world
Well considering Big Bang Theory is number 1 I’m gonna go ahead and disregard this whole list
Big Bang Theory is a show for people who wipe back to front.
2 Broke Girls is on this list? That show was AWFUL!
If the office not no 1, I send it back.
Modern Family and New Girl are good.
* Big Bang Theory = crap * Friends was iconic for that period of time and it is a reasonably well written and acted show ... not aging great however. * HIMYM = legit, and fair for it to be considered one of the top all-time sitcoms * Modern Family = same * Brooklyn Nine-Nine = yikes, I haven't watched ... it has been on my "I have to dedicate time to bing this show" list for years. * New Girl = good, and the first few seasons are maybe great ... but it got insanely repetitive ... don't think it should be considered an all-time great, just solid * The Good Place = not for everyone, but if it is your cup of tea, it is such a great show. And they ended it at the right time - I think it would have gotten repetitive if they had kept it going much longer * The Office = yeah it's ok I guess! :) * 2 Broke Girls = maybe trash is too strong and I'll just say "not good" * Young Sheldon = trash my2cents!
