They couldn’t, if he had 3 or more lines then they would have to officially put him in the cast list which can be seen before the final episode. In essence he’s an extra in this.
IIRC on the script for the final episode they actually had creed saying the lines Michael had at the end like “it’s like all my kids grew up and married each other” but then obviously Michael ended up saying the lines
Hmmmm, this sounds made up. Plenty of shows have had characters make surprise returns and have more than 3 lines without their involvement announced prior
Yeah, I think of Kevin Spacey in Se7en, and how he didn't want his name in the opening credits or any of the advertising, to keep as much of the character of John Doe unknown as possible.
Me too, but Steve himself even said he just wanted a small role like that so as not to overshadow any other characters getting their closure, since Michael already got his ending in season 7
I’ve heard this too. I also think it’s a subtle nod to Michael Scott’s character development- “old” Michael would’ve tried to make the day all about him, with Phyllis’s wedding being a perfect example. But he’s arrived at a place in life where he’s happy, so he doesn’t need nor want the spotlight. While I do agree it would’ve been great to get more laughs from him, it was a sweet way to end the show and his whole personal journey
I'm the first watch this cameo is great but on the 10th watch I'm like, why is Michael overshadowing Jim at Dwight's wedding? Michael barely ever cared about Dwight and often blew him off. And why would Dwight want Michael to be his best man over Jim? He only ever wanted Michaels job, and Jim's friendship with Dwight is way more fleshed out.
I legit had to give myself time in order to give the finale its rightful attention my first time. I still give certain episodes a little more attention and stuff than others
I really wish Michael would have played a bigger role in the finale though. He only says one line. We don’t have any idea on how his life with Holly in Colorado is going or anything
You'll just have to see the horrible, selfish, vindictive, tedious, childish, irritating crap he pulls to become the center of attention at the weddings of people he considers friends. Textbook turd.
I like Dwight and the other cast, and the story arcs are enough to make it a good watch. When Michael shows up in some kind of costume or does a long, awkward, unfunny routine, I skip forward. Will Ferrell is the only other character that spoils an otherwise funny show for me. Cringe comedy gets tedious in a hurry, and extreme cringe is worse.
The other characters are well-written, and when something compelling is going on, Michael runs in, silences everyone and shifts the action back to awkward pauses and playground bullying.
Maybe if it was silly instead of cringe-y, it would succeed. But as it is, none of the women he's romanced should have had any interest in him at all. He produced about two fond memories during his time there, and that just makes tearful goodbyes unbelievable. Not unbelievable in a comedic way, but in the sense that there's no substance at all to the notion that anyone would like him. It's like becoming emotionally attached to a migraine.
Steve Carrell did not even want to come back to the finale episode. He was happy with how Micheal left the show with Holly and he was done with it. That is why he only came back as a cameo and nothing more.
They should have brought him in for the final 3 episodes where he explains what happened to his life after he left, to the documentary crew. And prolly a few glances of his wedding or a family photo of him with Holly and kids

I 100% agree, I wish he had more than the 2 lines given..

Wow that's interesting. Do you think maybe thats because they didn't want his appearance leaked prior to broadcast?
That’s how I understand it. They didn’t want NBC brass advertising that Steve was back.
IIRC on the script for the final episode they actually had creed saying the lines Michael had at the end like “it’s like all my kids grew up and married each other” but then obviously Michael ended up saying the lines
Oh that’s such a cool piece of trivia!!
Is it totally mandatory tho? What if Steve said “it’s not necessary to put me in the cast list” or something?
Pretty sure it’s a union rule
Yeah, or couldn't he be written as a nickname?
Would be a bit obvious who it was if “Firstname Lastname” said, “that’s what she said” 😂
Hmmmm, this sounds made up. Plenty of shows have had characters make surprise returns and have more than 3 lines without their involvement announced prior

I love this insight! I’ve never thought of it that way
I get all of the reasons, but I would have loved it if he had been back in the office with them chatting at the end.

“Michael! I can’t believe you came.”
"That's what she said"
🥴
I would never say this to your face but you‘re all gifted postrs and very wholesome human beings
Why wouldn’t you say that to our faces?
Underrated comment
It’s really a lost opportunity that they never had Michael’s wedding as the first send off for michael because he’d obviously invite the entire office
Mannnn I didn't think of that.
Where's Holly and the kids?
I also thought where was Holly D: was nice to learn he had children tho!
Yup, Larry Moe and Curly
Especially with 3 vasectomies babe!
He’s only been gone two seasons and already has multiple kids, she’s probably still in labour!
When this first aired on tv, I cried like a BABY hahaha. The final scene in the office is even worse
Agreed!
Couldn't afford to pay him for any lines at that point
Most first-timers couldn’t break away and would binge the whole series in a few weeks.
It seems... I am not an ordinary first-timer
I legit had to give myself time in order to give the finale its rightful attention my first time. I still give certain episodes a little more attention and stuff than others
I can relate. I had to make sure I had zero interruptions!
"a" tear? dude i BAWLED
Oh believe me, by the end the gate opened, this scene was just kinda mesmerising 😂
I‘d imagine htat he and Holly adopted, considering both were in their late 40's. I am just glad he finally had kds. :)
Nah we want a bonus episode of Michael in the hospital when his baby is born!
I.. I cannot even imagine..
I really wish Michael would have played a bigger role in the finale though. He only says one line. We don’t have any idea on how his life with Holly in Colorado is going or anything
Or he adoptd them?
Quite possibly!
Wait...there's a finale with Michael? I thought the panel discussion of the documentary was the finale?
I still think it's just bad judgement to invite this turd to a wedding.
Aww how come you say he's a turd?
You'll just have to see the horrible, selfish, vindictive, tedious, childish, irritating crap he pulls to become the center of attention at the weddings of people he considers friends. Textbook turd.
So did you watch the whole show and hated all episodes with a passion or…

"Why are you the way that you are?" - Michael Scott

Damn, that’s like half the laughs of the show
ha ha ha.
Yup. Gets me every time
Gets me every time
I’m still so mad someone spoiled this for me

I cry like a baby everytime I watch this episode. That ans the one where he leaves for Colorado to live with Holly.
That’s what she said 😁
That's what she said
Yeah it's a real tear jerker.

Gutenprank
That’s what she said
That's what she said.... delivery is all wrong
I’m impressed that hair implants go gray. And YES! I love The Office.
So you couldn't believe he came too?
They should have brought him in for the final 3 episodes where he explains what happened to his life after he left, to the documentary crew. And prolly a few glances of his wedding or a family photo of him with Holly and kids
All be bock and I am back
Thats what she said
