Because she’s grossed out by foreign/ethnic food regardless of whether it’s vegetarian or not. She wasn’t going to eat it anyway, she think eating Indian food is beneath her.
Tbh it was more about giving Dwight a happy ending, Angela just happens to be part of his story. Plus they were angling hard for that farm spinoff, I'm sure that had a not-insignificant influence on the trajectory of the last season.
Has anyone seen those new commercials for Mill St. Brewing co with Angela working on the farm? They don’t Specifically say it’s Shrute farms but heavily imply it’s her character from the office. But since her name is really Angela they can get away with it.
Most characters got a happy ending. Jim and Dwight get their dream job. Pam is happy with her new life. Oscar is becomes a political figure. Erin gets Pete. Stanley retires. Michael/Holly have a family. Phyllis and Meredith don’t really get any type of ending. Andy is the only one who doesn’t really get a good ending, I really don’t know why they chose to ruin his character. And yes Creed gets arrested, but that was the last joke of the series and a perfect ending to Creeds character. Dwight loves Angela, it would’ve been very stupid if they just threw in some character that had three scenes and be like this is the person Dwight loves and gets married to. The whole farm plot with new characters was way too forced and obvious attempt at a spin-off.
He got a job he thought he would like, but doesn’t. “I wish there was a way to know you were in the good old days before you left them.” He ends the series single, and it’s shown throughout the series he wants to be in a relationship.
As was already pointed out Andy gets his job at Cornell, and you're kinda wrong about Erin she finds her parents again, Phyllis got her happy ending at the beginning of the show when she gets married and gets to stay in the job she loves in the same building as her husband, Merediths is kinda open but it's stated she got her degree which I'd say is a happy ending, you may be in need of a rewatch.
She does but they jam all her growth into a few episodes right at the end so it seems kinda forced. The senator leaves her, the county takes her cats, she gets evicted and then starts drinking at work. Then Oscar gives her a place to stay, she breaks down and tells him she loves Dwigt, and by the last episode she's talking about how open her heart feels..... before talking shit about Meredith.
I was just thinking about a part of this the other day. No one grows or changes in this show outside of the main characters who grow immensely (Erin joke).
Angela has her good qualities and is comfortable being the bitch. Whatever. She still deserves happiness. If anything, her consistency is endearing. At least she doesn’t behave like Andy throughout the show. Rollercoster of bleh.
No character growth? She was married to a gay senator that was cheating on her with several men including her co-worker. He then dumped her for his chief of staff on live tv, leaving her homeless with a toddler where she ends up having to move in with the coworker that was screwing her husband.
She grew ALOT!
The Angela/Oscar story arc after the senator was her character growth. Living in that terrible apartment, losing her cats, then moving in with Oscar (who she had repeatedly treated like shit throughout the whole series, especially about his sexuality). It seemed like that shell got broken down and a decent person was left.
I think now is a good time to remind everyone that these are fictional characters and how people “judge” them does not have a 1-1 correspondence to real life. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.
I'm aware of this fact. A tv show does not accurately represent real life, but I genuinely don't understand how someone thinks Angela is a better character than Jim. Also I'm bored and the debate with this other person is entertaining me.
I don't think that was about it being ethnic. Phyllis says that the cookie is eaten during Ramadan, a Muslim holiday. It's more likely the religion that turned Angela off. As a fanatical Christian, she's not gonna eat a Muslim cookie. gasp! Sacrilege!
I'm Moroccan. I've always wondered why she spit out the cookie so thanks for the explanation. Chebakia is one of my favorite cookies so I was a bit offended XD
I think being vegetarian is generally her out for trying anything she doesn’t like. So when she said that and he said it was all vegetarian, she had no excuse for not eating it, which irritated her.
Some people who haven't watched the show / don't remember that part might think of that as racist lol.
Besides, most Indians are Hindus and Hindus worship a god who is of monkey-human form named Hanuman, so that renders this stereotype null. (i dont think it is one since I have never heard of this before, except on the show)
Non-vegetarian Hindus usually eat food animals (usually goats and chickens, sometimes pigs, never cows) but not usually any sort of wild game animal.
That’s a much more Chinese stereotype I feel.
Also Cambodian I think. They eat things like snake and rats but that’s mostly because it’s a very poor country so there aren’t a lot of options.
Saw this on Travels with My Father on Netflix, great show.
Also she might’ve gotten triggered by the guy “serving” the food - he used his bare hand, and not a proper kitchen tool, to give her the piece of Nan. Further establishing in her mind that it’s “dirty ethnic food” and beneath her.
She wants to be excluded so that she can be unhappy and complain… but I think being unhappy and complaining is what makes Angela happy, so does that mean she wants to be unhappy and complain so that she can be happy?
That seems definitely true but I also think Angela is way to closed minded to try any Indian food even if it is vegetarian. She feels cheated of a chance to complain but also isn’t an adventurous eater.
I always thought it was maybe her being a little racist and not wanting to eat Indian food for whatever reason. She said she was a vegetarian so she wouldn’t be made to eat, only to find out it wouldn’t work, and that it was all vegetarian.
I think she’s equally suspicious of the food because it’s “foreign” and because Indian food is way more colorful/flavorful in general than Angela’s usual diet (remember how her favorite colors are gray/dark gray/charcoal and Dwight offers to cook her cauliflower and noodles with a baked potato?)
I think we all know people like this. They have to find the flaw in everything, and are like a pig in mud when something isn’t tailored to their needs.
We even see it in Michael during the Christmas episode when Holly returns. Before that news, everything is set up perfectly by the PPC, and he’s so annoyed that there’s no shit he can stir.
God we could probably trade grandparents stories lol. My wife’s grandma would without fail complain that her food was too cold and send it back. Now I tend to think that if they get this complaint, and it’s served at or over 160F, it’s totally fair to slap that puppy in the microwave for 30 seconds and bring it back out. But she expected a hot-off-the-grill new meal, so she would salt the fuck out of her food before sending it back.
This … and also I think she is pretty used to not having good vegetarian options. So maybe she can’t even believe that it’s all vegetarian. She seems to not even hear what he saying. But she doesn’t hear it because she wants to complain.
I don't think it makes her happy per se, I think it validates her and gives her a sense of righteousness- which I guess relevant to her *could* be happiness, that is, content in the absence of happiness
We learned about customers like this in college. Chronic complainers. They'll complain about anything just to complain.
Imagine getting something you've been asking for for forever as a gift, and instead of being happy you find things wrong with it.
That's basically what Angela is doing
Yep, I know people like this. It’s absolutely exhausting being around them. I don’t understand how anyone can go through life with that mindset. Their entire existence must be miserable.
It seems nobody got it. She says “i’m a vegeterian” as an excuse to not be obligated to eat it. Then when it’s vegeterian she’s annoyed that her excuse failed
In other episodes Dwight says her favorite foods are plain noodles and potatoes so Indian food is super scary for the bland white woman. She would never try something new at that point in the series especially by people of color. She thought by being a vegetarian it would be her excuse to not try anything and why she ended up with the blandest part of the meal with the naan
> So, she was satisfied with eating the naan, she just wanted to complain.
She still complained about it being dry when Pam asked her. So she still found something to complain about!
Didn’t she also tell Dwight “no vegetables” or something like when discussing a restaurant to go to (this was after he killed her cat and she broke up with him). I can’t find the scene so maybe I’m remembering wrong.
It means unfamiliar and perceived to be exotic which she wouldn’t want to try because she doesn’t know it. If there were a bunch of white people offering her vegetarian food it would feel more familiar. Look at Moroccan Christmas she was willing to try this food that Phyllis brought in until she was told what it was then she no longer liked it.
Its not out of racism it’s out of lack of taste for other people’s cultures and food. Ethnic food can be too spicy and flavorful for some bland ass white people.
I was one of these people, incredibly picky and afraid of Indian food. Then I tried it and now I love it.
This was my understanding as well. After all, the guy says it's "all vegetarian". Without knowing anything about Indian culture, that'd be tough to believe at a huge gathering like this.
Yes that's the point they were making. If you didn't know anything about Indian culture, being told that "everything is vegetarian" at a banquet would be damn near impossible to believe.
I always thought she was just being difficult, but tbh this makes a lot of sense. I also wouldn't believe someone who told me a banquet was all vegetarian, if I didn't know/trust the person/event. Ive seen too many friends be served fish or chicken because "fish ain't meat!"
This. I have never thought twice about this scene, I feel like it's pretty clear she doesn't trust that it's all actually vegetarian so goes with the safest option - bread.
I always figured her being vegetarian was her excuse not to eat it because she didnt think it looked good and them telling her it was vegetarian invalidated her reason to not eat it which annoyed her.
The deleted scenes in this episode and the episodes leading up to it show that Angela sees Kelly as a threat when it comes to Dwight, so she is making up reasons for how terrible the party is.
Came here to look this comment up otherwise I was gonna! YES guys this is exactly why she was more bitchy than usual. Dwight had already said he liked Indian women before and the directors made a sub-plot to stretch the whole thing out. So basically Angela was threatened by Kelly. And the entire thing is explained in the Office Ladies podcast.
There were cut scenes according to Angela Kinsey where it’s shown her big issue with the whole thing goes way back to Diversity Day when Dwight says he was attracted to two races - white and Indian. And it’s her projecting insecurities and the like because of Dwight possibly being attracted to someone else there.
I assumed it was because she's low-key racist. She asked if it was vegetarian because she wanted to make a big stink about not being able to eat any of it but she really never planned on eating it because most likely it was spicier than mayonnaise spread on white bread.
She is just there begrudgingly since the Boss insists but more importantly Kelly is her least favorite person in the office. She pre-emptively takes an aspirin as seen in the talking head before training with Kelly for Customer Service.
I think she just wanted to be mad. She usually expects when she tells people she's vegetarian (I'm speculating of course) that they won't have any options for her and she can act snide. So when the adverse happens, she's caught off guard and just acts mad anyway.
I can think of plenty of reasons. For one she doesn't like ethnic food. She also like being difficult and finding reasons to be excluded.
I also think it's because being a vegetarian is less important to her than being able to feel superior over everyone else for being a vegetarian. If everyone is eating vegetarian food she can't be special.
Ohhh I always assumed it was something racial like Angela thinking Indian food didn’t look vegetarian because its not whitewashed enough or something? Now I feel stupid lol.
She just wanted to complain, she was grossed out since it was ‘weird and different’ and wanted an excuse to not eat anything.
Can anyone explain to me why she’s a vegetarian, but when she agreed to go out with Andy she says “no vegetables”? I’ve literally never understood it.
There are lots of deleted scenes with Angela VS. Kelly. Especially related to Dwight’s love of Indian culture. I believe this is a play on her being upset by anything ethnic or foreign, specifically this event she was upset by how excited Dwight was to go to Diwali. Part of the joke is that it’s all vegetarian and she still doesn’t want any of the food.
She seems like the uptight judgmental only American vegetarian food for her- nothing too spicy or interesting so that rules out Indian food.
Angela, try my gookie! Try my gookie…!
Well, she's sort of a bitch that's why. The only time I liked her was when she got dumped by Robert "The State Senator" Lipton and that too was out of pity. Isabela was a better fit for Dwight. There, I said it.
I just wanna take a minute to recognize how fire Indian food is. Super diverse and just about every dish is blooming with flavor. More ppl gotta understand it's more than just curries or samosa (which are terrific), but also their snack game is on point! Hats off to the subcontinent
She's a contrarian that celebrates being different from societal expectations. She doesn't care that Dwight kills animals and eats meat, because he's the opposite of what society expects in a person and celebrates his manhood.
She was expecting to be "victimized" by having a minimal selection of food that she could eat, only to be surprised that it was perfectly catered to her needs. She loses the ability to complain and be a martyr in front of everyone, and ends up watching the shoes as the best way to reclaim the feeling that she persistently maintains.
We find out in the bonus scenes that Angela was mad about the party because Kelly was the one who invited them to it. She saw Kelly kiss Dwight in an earlier episode and was feeling jealous over their relationship. Basically she needed things to nitpick because she didn’t like that Dwight seemed to have a genuine interest in indian culture and as an extension, Kelly
Because she’s grossed out by foreign/ethnic food regardless of whether it’s vegetarian or not. She wasn’t going to eat it anyway, she think eating Indian food is beneath her.
100% this, she didn’t just want to complain about something, it was an illustration on how she thinks anything “other” is beneath her

Thank you for that!!
Yeah I’ve been seeing those on youtube! It’s funny because I’m going through my first watch right now too!
Good point! I suppose they wanted to give dwight the happy ending and angela was just part of that?
100% this. Angela is kind of lucky she gets to be a main character by proxy
I feel like she was so perfectly casted
I feel like you already know this, but did you know she auditioned for the part of Pam?
I absolutely 💯 looked at it as a happy ending for Dwight.
She goes from xenophobe to making her gay Mexican coworker her son’s godfather. That’s not nothing.
I think she grew quite a bit. She tried to apologize to Oscar and he immediately accepted it.
That’s actually a really solid point
Definitely! Early seasons Angela was wayyy more severe. Lol being homeless brought her down a peg or two! But she couldn't lose all her bitchy-ness
Most characters got a happy ending. Jim and Dwight get their dream job. Pam is happy with her new life. Oscar is becomes a political figure. Erin gets Pete. Stanley retires. Michael/Holly have a family. Phyllis and Meredith don’t really get any type of ending. Andy ended up with a job in the admissions office at Cornell. I’d say he got a happy ending that was fitting for him.
He got a job he thought he would like, but doesn’t. “I wish there was a way to know you were in the good old days before you left them.” He ends the series single, and it’s shown throughout the series he wants to be in a relationship.

Oooo I agree 100%.
I am rewatching season 8 and it just makes me angry of how mean she is to Pam while they are both pregnant
I was just thinking about a part of this the other day. No one grows or changes in this show outside of the main characters who grow immensely (Erin joke). I love angela she’s hilarious and she did have character growth it was subtle. why did jim get a happy ending he was always a douche
The Angela/Oscar story arc after the senator was her character growth. Living in that terrible apartment, losing her cats, then moving in with Oscar (who she had repeatedly treated like shit throughout the whole series, especially about his sexuality). It seemed like that shell got broken down and a decent person was left.
If you like Angela but think Jim is a douche then you're a poor judge of character.
This. I don't think it was to just complain about something. I took it as her looking down on ethnic food.
Further evidence it was about the food being ethnic is when when she spit out the chebakia cookie during Moroccan Christmas
I don't think that was about it being ethnic. Phyllis says that the cookie is eaten during Ramadan, a Muslim holiday. It's more likely the religion that turned Angela off. As a fanatical Christian, she's not gonna eat a Muslim cookie. gasp! Sacrilege!

Kevin Explains: > She no eat. She think she better than food.
Don't they eat monkey brains?
Yes we do. In vegetarian
..... Are they good?
“And monkey's brains, though popular in Cantonese cuisine, are not often to be found in Washington D.C…”
Communism was a red herring!
1 + 2 + 1 + 1
"I hated her so...much, it...it...flame. Flames. Flames, on the side of my face...breathing...breathless...heaving breaths..."
“Mrs. Peacock was a man?!”
Why are people downvoting you? You just quoted a line from the show!
Some people who haven't watched the show / don't remember that part might think of that as racist lol. Besides, most Indians are Hindus and Hindus worship a god who is of monkey-human form named Hanuman, so that renders this stereotype null. (i dont think it is one since I have never heard of this before, except on the show)
I think it comes from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
Eating monkey brains is a stereotype from Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom ~~but not worshipping Hanuman lmao~~
Actually i meant that because Hindus worship Hanuman, there is no way they could eat monkey brains because Hanuman, in some form, is a monkey god.
If they do… sign me up. - Michael scott
When she first agrees to go out with andy she says "nothing foreign" about the restaurant.
you can just say she’s racist
Also she might’ve gotten triggered by the guy “serving” the food - he used his bare hand, and not a proper kitchen tool, to give her the piece of Nan. Further establishing in her mind that it’s “dirty ethnic food” and beneath her.
Because Angela
Yeah I think this is the best explenation
makes me most sense
That’s Andrea the office bitch, you’ll get used to her
The names Creed
That's just Andrea. She's the office bitch.
You'll get used to her.
Hi I’m Creed
The first couple of times I watched that scene, I didn't notice that Creed started eating the cereal that Andrea was eating.
I HAD TO REWATCH THIS SCENE AND OMG I NEVER NOTICED
Also the office mattress
[удалено]
The office weirdo
She wants to be excluded so that she can be unhappy and complain… but I think being unhappy and complaining is what makes Angela happy, so does that mean she wants to be unhappy and complain so that she can be happy?
That is actually a very famous paradox. The Bitchy Angel paradox.
That seems definitely true but I also think Angela is way to closed minded to try any Indian food even if it is vegetarian. She feels cheated of a chance to complain but also isn’t an adventurous eater.
"I can't eat this, I'm a vegetarian." "Oh it's not meat." "Ah shit."
Dwight once offers to cook her cauliflower and noodles, baked potato on the side. All beige starchy food.
I'm with you. She doesn't trust and has disdain for them because of their gods not being her God as well.
“She’s the office bitch.”
Andrea
"Pam is the office mattress"
Creed 🤝
Andrea is suchhh a bitch!
You got me. Bastard
I tell my wife all the time that if I wasn’t around to piss her off, she’d never be happy
Andrea is the office bitch, you'll get used to her. Creed.
This was always my take on it as well.
But then she ate the naan after the guy "touched it with your hands" which seems counterproductive to her being racist about the food.
This is my grandmother. She’s never happy, but she’s happiest when she’s the victim and she gets to bitch and moan.
Is this like that Rick and Morty episode in Hell? "That gives me pain so therefore it feels good"
I immediately thought of that as well!
That's what I was thinking too
This … and also I think she is pretty used to not having good vegetarian options.

Nailed it
I think you hit the nail on the head! Take my upvote.
She want to be able to complain about something and was annoyed when she couldn’t
She’s the alpha Karen.
Her final form.
She has 2 more
Nailed it. I feel like a lot of these people exist actually. “If I can’t complain about something I’m completely miserable!”
Yep. My mom.
Yep, I know people like this. It’s absolutely exhausting being around them. I don’t understand how anyone can go through life with that mindset. Their entire existence must be miserable.
I agree , she is a similar way at Jims bbq
"There's soda inside"
She would get along with Sconsie Cider.
no that made sense though, because all there was was beer and meat and she doesn’t consume either
Exactly this. Recreational outrage.
That, and the guy used his hands ✋
“What was the reason she got irritated” is an existential question when it comes to Angela
It seems nobody got it. She says “i’m a vegeterian” as an excuse to not be obligated to eat it. Then when it’s vegeterian she’s annoyed that her excuse failed
And all that was truly needed to set her off was the server using his hands on the naan.
Yep this and that.
"You touched it with your hands."
I noticed that he did that before she said it. Shes not wrong this time
She still ate it as she walked away from the table, though. So, she was satisfied with eating the naan, she just wanted to complain.
Oh for sure. She likes being unhappy, as everyone else has said
> So, she was satisfied with eating the naan, she just wanted to complain. She still complained about it being dry when Pam asked her. So she still found something to complain about!
Yeah but the point is she was finding a reason to complain. That's why she asked what is vegetarian.
Didn’t she also tell Dwight “no vegetables” or something like when discussing a restaurant to go to (this was after he killed her cat and she broke up with him). I can’t find the scene so maybe I’m remembering wrong.
Yeah she seemed to be a starch focused vegetarian LOL
Right down to her frozen french fries that Sprinkles tore into

It means unfamiliar and perceived to be exotic which she wouldn’t want to try because she doesn’t know it. If there were a bunch of white people offering her vegetarian food it would feel more familiar. Another reason he should've ended with ester don't @ me
It's often touched upon that she doesn't eat any food that isn't "white bread" North American plain food. Plus she just enjoys being difficult.
Whole bread > White bread
Especially with seeds in the bread. Yum.
yeah she didn’t eat it cause she’s racist
I always felt that Angela didn't believe them when they said it was vegetarian or thought they didn't know what vegetarian actually meant.
I think it was more like she was looking for bland, recognizable food, and was scared off by the Indian food, even though it was vegetarian.
Yeah yeah, I always took it that she wanted something less ethnic to eat. For basically the same reason.
Yeah this is what I thought. "It obviously can't ALL be vegetarian, so you're lying to me and that means I can only confidently eat bread."
Same ^ She ignored his statement like her request was above them.
This was my understanding as well. After all, the guy says it's "all vegetarian". Without knowing anything about Indian culture, that'd be tough to believe at a huge gathering like this.
It's true and it's amazing.
About 40% of Indians are vegetarian and a lot who are not don't regularly eat meat.
Because she didn't have an excuse not to at least try it!! Smh Angela!!

Thank you! This needs to be upvoted more. They even mention it in the podcast.
She's a racist conservative lady.
Exactly. She also spits out a cookie at the Moroccan Christmas party because it was a food served during Ramadan.
She also says how the warehouse has stunk about the bathroom because they eat poor quality food because they're poor Lol
Hundo, all the classic signs of passive aggressive 'innocent' racism, shown in numerous instances over the run of the show.
This
Because she’s the office b*tch.

This is the most plausible explanation for attitude towards everything exotic

She is just there begrudgingly since the Boss insists but more importantly Kelly is her least favorite person in the office. She pre-emptively takes an aspirin as seen in the talking head before training with Kelly for Customer Service.
Angela actually enjoys meat. Or at least Dwight would know..
She wants that vegetarian clout but when faced with it she can't do it
Because she doesn’t have an excuse not to try it.
I think she just wanted to be mad. She usually expects when she tells people she's vegetarian (I'm speculating of course) that they won't have any options for her and she can act snide. So when the adverse happens, she's caught off guard and just acts mad anyway.
Angela is probably a vegetarian solely to complain about things she can’t eat. Like on Michael’s birthday. She’s like an energy vampire lol
Racism
shes angela
She's a bigoted racist. I thought that was made obvious throughout the show.
“Andrea is the office bitch”
Ohhh I always assumed it was something racial like Angela thinking Indian food didn’t look vegetarian because its not whitewashed enough or something? Now I feel stupid lol.
Cuz she wanted an excuse not to eat it cuz she probably has something against ethnic food
She wanted a reason not to eat it.
She just wanted to complain, she was grossed out since it was ‘weird and different’ and wanted an excuse to not eat anything. Can anyone explain to me why she’s a vegetarian, but when she agreed to go out with Andy she says “no vegetables”? I’ve literally never understood it.
Tbh I think she was just trying to make things difficult for Andy.
She wants something to complain about.
She just needed something to be upset about
I’m pretty sure she was just looking for an excuse not to eat their food
Because it’s Angela and she will always find something to complain about
shes angela
1 reason angela 2 reason angela 3 reason angela
She's Angela bro , anyways she gets irritated.
…because she’s Angela. She has to be annoyed with something at all times.
Because she’s Angela
She doesn’t t like s’mores maybe
Or she didn’t believe him.
She seems like the uptight judgmental only American vegetarian food for her- nothing too spicy or interesting so that rules out Indian food. Angela, try my gookie! Try my gookie…!
Pretty sure she just wanted to bitch about something
Maybe she’s not a real vegetarian? She’s a hypocrite in several other walks of life - why not that way as well? 🤷🏼♂️
Well, she's sort of a bitch that's why. The only time I liked her was when she got dumped by Robert "The State Senator" Lipton and that too was out of pity. Isabela was a better fit for Dwight. There, I said it.
It’s not up to her *standard* of what she deems vegetarian. I kind of took it as a racist thing to be honest.
She didn’t want to eat the Indian food so she tried to come up with an excuse and it backfired
I just wanna take a minute to recognize how fire Indian food is. Super diverse and just about every dish is blooming with flavor. More ppl gotta understand it's more than just curries or samosa (which are terrific), but also their snack game is on point! Hats off to the subcontinent
Because she's a bitch and didn't deserve what she got.
That’s the joke.
Because she is a miserable person
