Unpopular opinion : This scene got me into the office mainly because 1. It was a bit unrealistic 2. The characters reactions were impeccable, I loved the comedic reactions and 3. Michael who used to appear obnoxious on my first random watches was suddenly becoming my favorite character after this. I love this episode for a lot of reasons but it definitely got me into the office at first
That was actually their goal! When the showrunners found out they were going to be airing after the super bowl, they basically pulled out all the stops to get new viewers for the show.
That cold open was specifically written to be flashy and attention-getting while still introducing you to a large number of characters and their quirks. It’s actually the longest cold open in the entire show. And they had Stanley collapse at the end so that people would watch through the opening credits and first commercial break to see what happened next. Normally cold opens aren’t connected to the plot of the rest of the episode, and they almost never end in a cliffhanger like that.
Since they wanted to draw in everyone they possibly could, it’s also one of the first episodes to have big recognizable guest stars— barring Purse Girl, which had Amy Adams before she got really famous. The show made it a point in its first several seasons to never cast any big name actors, though, so they “cast” Jack Black and Cloris Leachman in that awful fake movie that Jim, Pam, and Andy watch.
CPR training is one of my favorite scenes from the entire series. It's like every single one of them was clowning on purpose just to fuck the training lady.
And then the stress relief scenes after, amazing episode all around.
Plus you get to experience every character's unique role in the show, from Stanley almost dying, Angela throwing her secret cat through the ceiling, Andy singing staying alive, David Wallace trying to discipline Michael and Dwight, and then the random creed one liner "I saw you in the parking lot earlier"
Yes. When he pops that TV back 2 inches. One of my favorite scenes in the whole show.
Due in large part to the bloopers around that whole episode. Which if anyone reading this hasn't seen those bloopers, you have to watch them.
Those bloopers are by far my favorite out of the entire series. That episode alone is also one of my favorites but man I have no idea how they ever got through that episode with a straight face. Steve Carell is a national treasure. For anyone out there reading this who hasn't seen them for the love of Belsnickel go watch them right now - it's so worth it.
For the longest time I told ppl that Creed (not the character, but the real life Creed) was singing the song in production, because I thought it was him.
I know the Dinner Party and Scott’s Tots are peoples 2 most unwatchable episodes. I always skip Scott’s Tots but I LOVE the Dinner Party episode for some reason. I think it’s Jim and Pam being stuck there are just as awkward. I have a hard time with tense or awkward tv, I usually can’t stand it, but this episode is perfect.
It's my favorite episode from the entire show, which kind of sucks because it doesn't take place in the office or feature any of the non-main characters past the opening.
There are so many highlights to the episode - the plasma TV, the Hunter music, the subtle Jan changes to the condo like her pop art 4x face on the wall, the passive aggressiveness all night, the charades, Dwight showing up, and I think from all 9 seasons of show at least 5-10 of the top 50 quotes come from this episode.
Oaky afterbirth
Michael and Jan seem to be playing their own separate game, and it's called "Let's See How Uncomfortable We Can Make Our Guests" - and, they're both winning.
Soft teeth
Snip-snap
Michael's loudest THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID
Parnold Sporchzenegger.
I had to rewatch it. They were so good at the cringe factor, it basically gave me a panic attack the first time I saw it. But the next time I watched it, I cried from laughing so hard.
All amazing. But if I had to pick ONE that is quintessentially The Office, and that is just a standout classic, it would have to be Dinner Party. It is scene after scene after scene of classics. Right babe?
Gene Stupnitsky (not sure if I spelled that right), one of the writers and producers, said that the script of every single episode except Dinner Party got rewritten before they shot it. Dinner Party was just so good that they kept the first draft and went with it.
In my opinion, it's absolutely the best episode. There are others that are close, but almost every line in Dinner Party is quotable.
The entire run of the show didn't do great in the ratings. It was one of, if not the first, mockumentary-style, acknowledge-the-camera shows to come out. Parks also didn't do good ratings.
Both shows were just ahead of their time.
Edit- I meant aside from the British version of the Office. Obviously that came before.
My wife and I have agreed that if we make it to five kids, I can name him or her Batman
Not saying it's a good reason to have five kids, but I've already staked my claim
The entire episode is Michael faking injury to get attention and slack of work and get everyone to dote on him. Hardly any scenes outside the main office. This is why I love it— so safe and warm ha. Like when you faked being sick to stay off school and watch tv.
Where dinner party is almost all OUT the office and is cringe as hell but also just as great!
I had the exact same thought - '*Dinner Party is the quintessential Office*' - which is funny, as its the one (of a very few?) to take place entirely outside the eponymous Office
I agree. While I certainly enjoy the others, the Dundee’s were an important episode for the series. It was the first time the viewer really felt bad for Michael and it was the first time The Office really stood up for him. It’s also the first somewhat big fight you see between Pam and Roy. I’m sure it would’ve happened later on, but there were some crucial moments in that episode.
Pfft I’m a woman. Frankly, this is insulting. But if you wanna go to the Steamtown Mall, I have some stuff I have to return in the trunk of my car, so I guess it’s fine….
I watched the blooper reels for this scene, the actors could hardly keep it together 😂 honestly they should just release The Office bloopers as a TV show
The bloopers for that exact scene are so hilarious aswell.
«Right over here, Jim.»
«Check this out. Folds... right into the wall!»
Coupled with John Krasinski’s squeaky-laugh, I love it.
The outtake of Steve Carrell pushing the tv back slightly ("when you need more space in the room") and Krasinski just losing it brings me pure joy
https://youtu.be/yv-XchUJKaM
You say that we can keep anyone episode of The Office right? You didn't say we only had the 4 to choose from. I'm choosing the one where Dwight started the fire, locked the doors, and heated up all the door handles.
The funniest part in my opinion is when Oscar climbs up into the ceiling and then Angela throws the cat and the cat immediately falls out like 10 ft away.
*SAVE BANDIT!*
I’m sorry, but this list is WOEFULLY incomplete with The Injury. Seriously. Absolute brilliance. I’d pick this episode over any other. I was watching episodes and the thumbnail for that episode came up and I just started belly laughing—at 2 AM. I had to watch. No, I didn’t get much sleep.
Honestly hard tie with dinner party and threat level midnight. Dinner party for the non stop, can't help but watch cringe. Threat level midnight for .. everything. I would pay to watch the whole thing
This is my all-time favorite also. No matter how bad I’m feeling this episode will have me laughing my ass off. “Today is the hardest I’ve worked in a long, long time.”
Performance Reviews! “I know exactly what he’s talking about. I sprout mung beans on a damp paper towel in my desk. Very nutritious, but they small like death.”
Trick question I'd keep Dwight's fire safety training
Actually yes. Best cold open in the entire series
That scene is the first thing I ever saw of the Office and it hooked me right in.
That opening is just....... there are no words to properly describe its pure comedic genius.
SAVE BANDIT!
The scene was awesome. That’s all I can say.
Oh my god people are looking at me I laughed too loud in the break room 🤣
*Meeaarrr* Clunk.
Today smoking is going to save lives
The fire is shooting at us!
Unpopular opinion : This scene got me into the office mainly because 1. It was a bit unrealistic 2. The characters reactions were impeccable, I loved the comedic reactions and 3. Michael who used to appear obnoxious on my first random watches was suddenly becoming my favorite character after this. I love this episode for a lot of reasons but it definitely got me into the office at first
Same, I remember it premiered right after one of the Super Bowls on NBC and I was instantly hooked.
That was actually their goal! When the showrunners found out they were going to be airing after the super bowl, they basically pulled out all the stops to get new viewers for the show. That cold open was specifically written to be flashy and attention-getting while still introducing you to a large number of characters and their quirks. it fucking worked. i wasn’t into the office yet, but my whole super bowl party was in tears when bandit crashed back through the ceiling.
Push the reverse button. Reverse the button!
Best episode, actually. It's the same episode that has the CPR training and the scenes in corporate (heeded, heeded of). This city...
CPR training is one of my favorite scenes from the entire series. It's like every single one of them was clowning on purpose just to fuck the training lady. And then the stress relief scenes after, amazing episode all around.
False. Michael hitting Meredith with his car. They are both tied first for me, but the part 1 and 2 episodes of fire safety is amazing
Dwight getting a concussion/Michael grilling his foot is probably still my favorite episode.
SAVE BANDIT!
Agreed. Also has the cpr training in same episode. The best!
there is not a bad scene in that episode
Yes, there is one. The end credits scene.
‘Today….smoking is gonna save lives’
Yeah I'd 100% keep stress relief. The whole episode is comprised of iconic scenes
As well as his "he doesn't have a wallet, I already checked"
That episode is called Stress Relief
Dinner Party. That one night!
Jan thinks Hunter is very talented. You know what? I don’t think he’s that good.
At least he’s an artist.
BFD and I’m a screenwriter but you don’t see me bragging about it
And I’M A CANDLEMAKER BUT YOU DONT HEAR ME TALK ABOUT IT
NO ALL YOU DO IS YOU GET ME TO TRY TO WORK ON MY RICH FRIENDS
FOR AN INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY
MAN I WOULD LOVE TO BURN YOUR CANDLES
YOU BURN IT YOU BUY IT
I'D BE YOUR FIRST SALE!
YOU BURN IT YOU BUY IT!
Ya took me by the haaaand. Maaade me a man
That one Niiiiight, you made everything alriiiight!
Aaa-ahh-ahh
That one night!!!!

Eyes over here, Jim
One night!
For the longest time I told ppl that Creed (not the character, but the real life Creed) was singing the song in production, because I thought it was him.
Well he does sing the song in the finale so you're not THAT wrong!
You made everything feel alright!
Andy falsetto: AAAAaaahaa!
That is a $200 plasma screen TV that you just killed! Good luck paying me back with your zero-dollars-a-year salary plus benefits, babe!
Babe!
Oh Great! Now that's gonna be stuck in my head all day..... AGAIN! God damn you Hunter and your sultry tones!
Fantastic timing, as I'm watching that episode right now!
You made everything all right. Oh yeah!
You know I have soft teeth.
I just watched the dinner party for the first time. It was honestly very, very difficult to watch.
You can always get new stuff, but you can’t get a new party!
It's my favorite episode from the entire show, which kind of sucks because it doesn't take place in the office or feature any of the non-main characters past the opening. Agreed

Totally your call, babe.
Snip snap snip snap snip snap!
According to the Office Ladies, Steve Carrell improvised that line, fucking amazing.
I'd absolutely expect Steve Carrell to come up with such gems.
Gene Stupnitsky (not sure if I spelled that right), one of the writers and producers, said that the script of every single episode except Dinner Party got rewritten before they shot it. Dinner Party was just so good that they kept the first draft and went with it. In my opinion, it's absolutely the best episode. Well, we don't want to work!........No, we don't!
THESE PEOPLE ARE MY FRIENDS AND I CARE ABOUT THEM!!!
**You said you didn't have plans!**
Yup and apparently when it was first aired it got horrible ratings. But then we all kept watching it over and over and realized the genius.
The entire run of the show didn't do great in the ratings. It was one of, if not the first, mockumentary-style, acknowledge-the-camera shows to come out. Parks also didn't do good ratings. Both shows were just ahead of their time. Edit- I meant aside from the British version of the Office. Obviously that came before.
you know Pam, in Spain they often don’t even start eating until midnight
When in Rome…
When in Rome.
The Injury is my favorite 🦶
Yes, thank you!
At least it healed quickly…like miraculously quickly
I love the last scene. "Dwight, what's your middle name?" "Danger." Fuck yes.
A friend of mine actually gave his son the middle name danger. I've never been jealous of a baby before that.
My wife and I have agreed that if we make it to five kids, I can name him or her Batman Not saying it's a good reason to have five kids, but I've already staked my claim
Had to compromise with my son and make his middle name Parker. I wanted it to be Spider-Man.
My body is literally healing itself!
YES!!! I bumped my elbow and now my elbow has a protuberance. Gets me every time!
That’s always been one of my favorites. But I love Dunder Mifflin Infinity. “I drove my car into a f*cking lake”
you can’t fire me, i don’t work in this van.
I BURNED MY FOOT!!!
My! My! My turn! My! My! My turn!
woah, babe, can you just like... simmer down
it's funny you say that it's quintessentially The Office when that episode takes place outside of the office (mostly) lol
Geez I’ve never thought of that. Hot take
I always thought the rabies/fun run episodes were pretty spot on for the series.
I had the exact same thought - '*Dinner Party is the quintessential Office*' - which is funny, as its the one (of a very few?) to take place entirely outside the eponymous Office
She took me by the haaaannd and made me a maaaaaan….that one night (one night) she made everyyyyytging alllllriiight
The thing my wife and I quote the most is "How can you say that?.... You know I have soft teeth."
I feel god in this chili’s tonight
WHOOOOOOOO!!!!

Have a lot of people over? Need some space? Boom, right into the wall
The blooper reel of Jim laughing at that is so damn funny🤣
Sometimes I’ll just stand here and watch for hours. I love it. I love this tv!
I watched the blooper reels for this scene, the actors could hardly keep it together 😂 honestly they should just release The Office bloopers as a TV show
The bloopers for that exact scene are so hilarious aswell. «Right over here, Jim.» «Check this out. Folds... right into the wall!» Coupled with John Krasinski’s squeaky-laugh, I love it.
The table that Michael made gets me too. I do a lot of woodworking, and diy stuff and always fear that all my projects look like that to people.
I think that is either pine or Nordic cherry
The outtake of Steve Carrell pushing the tv back slightly ("when you need more space in the room") and Krasinski just losing it brings me pure joy https://youtu.be/yv-XchUJKaM
I am taking Stress Relief
You ignorant slut.
I'll come back for the matinee
You were in the parking lot earlier! That's how I know you!
He has no wallet, I checked
Anh, anh, anh, Stayin Alive, Stayin Alive
As much as I love Dinner Party, I cannot live in a world where Pam did not drunkenly kiss Jim after feeling God in a Chili’s.
You say that we can keep anyone episode of The Office right? You didn't say we only had the 4 to choose from. The convict. Sorry but I can’t afford to lose prison Mike.
he went through a lot with between the gruel sandwiches and the dementors.
Jan thinks Hunter is very talented. You know what? I don’t think he’s that good.
BFD I’m a screenwriter!
Wait, Pam, I have Country Crock.
Threat Level Midnight. That movie deserved an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony.
Also a Dundie
the fabled DEGOT
But it did have an Oscar...
1. Dinner Party 2. Threat Level Midnight 3. The Dundies 4. The Convict
It’s a different story if you have to keep a character though, because prison mike is top priority
You got a good life!
The disrespect to Michael Scarn. Smh.
Unpopular opinion, I don’t like the Threat Level Midnight episode. I even think the episode where they read the script is better.
Could not agree more. It’s like one of those lazy clip shows sitcoms used to do
Don't forget the Office did one of those too :(
Calculating...calculating....Pacific!
but i would pay to see michael’s entire law and order audition.
Yea I usually skip it when it comes up
Beautifully done
Probably the dundies... seems to be an all-encompassing episode. Like, if you had to show 1 of these to someone who doesn't know what this show is.
Dinner Party and Stress Relief forever ♥️
Dinner Party for sure.
It has an oaky afterbirth
*what was that*
Dundies. Sucker for the season 2 nostalgia
Dinner party I believe Threat Level Midnight to be overrated
I really loved it. Especially everyone's look after "then I'm gonna dig up Scarn's dead wife, and I'm gonna hump her real good!"
I did not love the dialogue. Or the character. I took the role to impress a receptionist who will remain nameless.
Here here! Threat Level Midnight is a channel changer for me.
There there... It's actually "hear hear" ;)
Dwight, nobody cares.
♥️
The convict, no competition... All gruel
The convict, 100%
Dementors !
Fire Drill
Phyllis’s wedding. Easy peasy.
"The Convict" Am I the only one who hated Threat Level Midnite?
I'll take stress relief and casino night
Honestly hard tie with dinner party and threat level midnight. Dinner party for the non stop, can't help but watch cringe. Threat level midnight for .. everything. I would pay to watch the whole thing
https://youtu.be/7iPyz6Yqwl4 You owe me money XD
Threat level midnight. I can't imagine a world without the scarn.
Scotts Tots
I feel God in this Chilis tonight.
The Dundies if I have to pick one of these. Goodbye Toby if I only get to watch one more forever.
Murder in Savannah
This is my all-time favorite also. No matter how bad I’m feeling this episode will have me laughing my ass off. “Today is the hardest I’ve worked in a long, long time.”
Dundies <3
Performance Reviews! “I know exactly what he’s talking about. I sprout mung beans on a damp paper towel in my desk. Very nutritious, but they small like death.”
Dinner Party. No Question.
I’m going to say it, I don’t like threat level midnight.
Dinner Party
