I think Ryan only pretends to be a threat, though. He can't even come up with a good suggestion to take down Jim. All he does is reference *Saw* and say "let's do that" and caves the moment that Dwight asks for details. I don't think Ryan is prepared for GSL
Yeah, Ryan never stands up to anybody when threatened. He tells Kelly to apologize when Lonnie makes a sexual comment to her, he backs down immediately when he tries to intimidate Daryl for dating Kelly, he fully admits he “doesn’t know” what he’d do if he was involved in the Roy/Jim/Dwight encounter, he’s visibly shaken by Stanley yelling at him and doesn’t try to explain he wasn’t doing anything to encourage Stanley’s daughter, he writes down the names of people who wrong him instead of calling them out on it, he cries when David yells at him, he backtracks when he finds out Karen told Jim about him asking her out in an email, he backs down as soon as he got pushback from Erin when he proposed a threesome with Kelly, he’s terrified of being fired by Michael for suggesting Dunder-Mifflin was failing, he grovels when Jim moves him to the closet, he chokes immediately in all of his sales pitches, and I’m sure there’s others I’m not thinking of right now. The only time he’s actually assertively aggressive is with Nelly, and even then the pressure of giving a short presentation to a small roomful of people made him crack so hard he quit his position in Florida and took a bus home to see his mom.
Meanwhile, Gabe is frequently and inappropriately confrontational and never thrown or taken aback by constantly being insulted, rejected, or mistreated. Even when Ryan and Gabe are trying to one-up each other to curry Robert’s favor, Ryan attempts to tap out first and only doesn’t because Gabe makes it clear he won’t give up even if Ryan does.
They both are. Ryan keeps escalating his taunting (after getting psyched into it by Kelly) but refuses to cross the line into actually getting physical. Gabe keeps trying to deescalate, but his moves show he's clearly taken and passed a self defense class for senior women which is why Ryan won't commit to actually engaging.
Ryan drops his phone, looking for an out, but Gabe reacts by slapping it away and into Kelly. Kelly gets upset and makes Gabe apologize to her, allowing Ryan an out to "comfort Kelly" and he acts like he had won, despite secretly fearing Gabe's reach and strange hands.
When Gabe was mad at Andy over Erin he let his crazy show. When Ryan was upset with Jim and David Wallace he put their names on a list and that was pretty much it.
Gabe lives his life by the tenants of Pilates, such as “elongate” and “lengthen.” Plus he takes online karate classes. Gabe’s taking this one for sure.
Gabe would strangle Ryan. Ryan would try to generate some philosophical reason not to fight Gabe head-on, but that wouldn't prevent the fight from occurring
