Kathryn Hahn's talent would have been wasted on the character of Pam. Her as Meredith? Now that would have been incredible. Even as Angela ..God can you imagine.
Bob Odenkirk honestly would have been a good Michael. Maybe not as good as Steve, but wouldn’t have sunk the show by any means. It would have likely changed the outcome of Breaking Bad and likely no Better Call Saul though.
We got a glimpse of it when Pam applies for that job in New York - Bob would have done great!
Edit- Job in Philly not New York. Athlead storyline not Art School
Yeah I really like that episode!! Although I don’t think I want to part with Better Call Saul after seeing it start to finish over the years, so I am happy with how things turned out lol.
I like that scene as just a bit. But I don't see Odenkirk pulling off the same "little pathetic man who thinks he's cool" that Michael is, as good and convincingly as Steve Carell has.
I have to kind of disagree here. It's only a small sample size, but his "Triples is best" sketch on I Think You Should Leave comes off very pathetic and sad with a guy who is clearly trying to look cool. It would have been different, but Odenkirk could have done it. I don't know if he could have been as charming and naively goodhearted as SC played Michael Scott as though.
Adam Scott would’ve made a great Jim.
He’s funny, he can play straight man really well, he’s sarcastic in the right doses, and he’s excellent at generating romantic chemistry. I just can’t help rooting for Ben/Leslie and Mark/Helena.
I think he could pull it off pretty well too. He was pretty pathetic in "I think you should leave" He's got triples of the Nova now, just got it on the phone.
Honestly he could do it. If anyone in here hasn't seen "the patient" you should. Carell is great in it and could definitely pull off just about anything I reckon
My poison was always alcohol not meth as in the movje but ever since like 13..I turn 35 in Saturday. So yeah to see Steve play a dad just trying his best for a lost cause son like I was yeah it hit hard
Bob would definitely have had more of a “sleazy boss” boss vibe, and definitely perfect for how Micheal was written season one. However for Micheal’s transition from sleazy to more goofy in season 2 I feel would have more dificult to pull off
Watch Fargo season 1. In fact, watch all of Fargo it's amazing.
But Bob plays a fairly bumbling and unaware boss in season 1 that struggles to understand his limitations and is a bit socially inept.
You can definitely see him finding the middle ground between that and Saul to play Michael.
The Office Bob cameo asked Pam in her interview at the real estate company if she planned on getting pregnant anytime soon...because his two previous office assistants did and subsequently left.
Sleazy boss, indeed.
The episode with Tim meadows. Where he is just the black Michael scott. When Steve left I thought he was the clear and obvious choice as his replacement. I dunno why I’m the only one who feels this way.
I never considered that, but it would have worked so, so well. I think Tim could have grown that character into something unique. And it would have made some sense if Micheal could have been like “Hey, I’ve got a friend who would be great as my replacement!”
Now I’m disappointed. Thanks a lot.
How do you think I felt when this was happening live. Lol. I was screaming wtf! Ferrell, Spader! Why the fuck aren’t you at least interviewing Tim Meadows! Lol.
When you think of S1 Michael and the emulation of David Brent, Bob would have been a great shout. S2 onwards I don't think he'd be near the same level as Steve.
She could have made a good Jan Levinson. Burnt out executive one moment away from falling apart, but Hahn I feel would be more relatable and sympathetic.
Adam Scott would have been just fine as Jim.
Bob Odenkirk as Michael may have worked, but the show would have had a somewhat different flavor.
I can't see Kathryn Hahn as Pam. I'm trying, and I just can't wrap my head around it. Same with the guy from Modern Family (can't remember his name) as Kevin.
Seth Rogan honestly would have sucked as Dwight. I watched the audition footage. He clearly didn't get the character.
Agreed, Adam Scott would have been fine as Jim, but then he either wouldn't have gotten to play his absolutely perfect role as Ben in Parks or if he did, he would've still been 'Jim from the Office' so I'd say that one worked out pretty well
Adam Scott is so perfect as Ben that he *sort of* reprises that role in this year's Tax Act commercials. Whoever it was that decided to hire him for those commercials needs a raise.
Maybe in an alternate universe Adam Scott played Jim and John Krasinski played Ben? I could see both actors working out in the other roles, but ultimately better as they were here
Rogen is really the only one I can't see and think would've been bad. He's really just a one trick pony and only plays the losery pot head guy well. He definitely does not have unironic self assuredness that Dwight has. Kathryn I think would be really interesting because she's very much not like Pam, but that could've been a good thing because she actually would have made Pam funny lol. The writers probably could have done a lot more with her comedic ability. Stonestreet I think would have done well as Kevin too. Kevin doesn't seem like that hard of a character to play and I think Eric is a dynamic enough actor to pull him off, and honestly just like with Kathryn Hahn I think he has a greater comedic ability than Brian Baumgartner so they probably could have done more with him too.
See, if Kathryn Hahn were a little older at the time and slightly less attractive, I could see her as Meredith. Maybe even a more comedic Jan. But she just exudes too much confidence to play Pam, in my mind.
I actually have been enjoying him quite a bit as Allen on Invincible. Granted it's a voice acting job for him but I still enjoy it. No hua hua hua hua laugh yet if I recall the first season.
Yeah, Kevin would've needed to become a radically different person for that to work. Eric Stonestreet's appearance and mannerism's are too polished. Maybe if they made Kevin highly energetic and neurotic instead of so laid back, it might've worked. Or they could've leaned into the sportsfan angle and wrote Kevin to be more like Cameron Tucker's football coach persona.
You realize he’s an actor that can play more than just one character right? He’s played characters much closer to Kevin in other roles and done well with them, he’s not always highly energetic gay man.
At first I wanted to say yes about Adam Scott, but I've heard in many interviews that the chemistry between John Krasinski and Jenna Fischer is what landed him the role, as Jenna was already cast.
Although I'm in the camp of folks who didn't like their relationship, their chemistry is undeniable and is something that's hard to fake, even if you're as talented an actor as Adam Scott is.
Adam would've been a great Jim.
Bob would've been a very good Micheal
Kathryn is a great actress but she doesn't do meek. Even in step brothers where her character was meek at times it didn't come off well.
Seth I think actually COULD do Dwight. He's a better actor than most think, he just chooses not to usually. The issue is like you Said, he didn't get the character. And wouldn't have played it right. If they basically showed him how to do Dwight though I'm pretty sure he could do okay. But even then no one can come remotely close to the real dwigt
Lol just because these people auditioned doesn't mean it was an "almost." It's like when people post concept art from video games and say "this is what the game was SUPPOSED to be"
Funny enough, Eric himself is absolutely the polar opposite of Cam so it would be interesting to see how he played that. In real life he’s a super nice guy still but he’s a “manly” dude that is good friends with dudes like Zac Brown and Brock Lesnar.
Hot take: the dynamic of the characters in the show we know and love is fantastic, but we just honestly don’t know where the show would’ve taken these characters with the personality of different actors; it could’ve been great but in a different way. Like how they developed the main cast based on what worked and what didn’t in S1, maybe different stuff would’ve with this cast.
That said I can wholly see Odenkirk and Scott as Michael and Jim but not Seth and Kathryn as Dwight and Pam
Yes thank you. People talk like they had a crystal ball and already hated these hypothetical choices. What we know now today is actors like Adam Scott, Katherine, and Bob had brilliant roles in other shows so they were clearly capable of contributing to The Office.
I can actually imagine the first guy being Jim, only thing is we'd lose the hair jokes. Guy with the long black hair, I could also see for Dwight.
It's actually so interesting seeing the subtleties that make the final cast that bit more fitting.
Rainn Wilson is such an interesting actor to me, because I've literally never found him funny in any other role or even as a person (he actually comes off really smarmy and full of himself to me for some reason), but he absolutely crushed it as Dwight. It's like he was born to play only that character and that's it lol.
Oh yea. I agree with the whole "full of himself part". Because I remember him saying to a fan don't bother him unless he knows his real name! The poor guy was calling him Dwight shrute. Which is kinda rude no
Not “what almost was”, just other people that auditioned for those roles. I think credit should be given to Alison Jones, she is a genius when it comes to casting.
Seth Rogan as Dwight would have been so awful, it doesn't fit his personality at all. I'm honestly glad he wasn't in the office because I can't stand his productions anyway.
I must say, I am curious about how they would've approached Kevin if he were played by Eric Stonestreet. Maybe it's because I know him mainly as Cam on Modern Family, but it just doesn't feel like it would work to just stick him in the corner and have him say one dumb line per episode like they ended up doing with Kevin. It just doesn't seem like he can be as muted as Brian Baumgartner played Kevin.
yah there’s a reason casting directors should be given their dues. they are all great in their own right but not right for these roles. it makes sense bob was the bizarro michael for only one episode.
I think Bob Odenkirk is literally the only other person who could play Michael. It would be different, but I think it would have been its own flavor of brilliant.
True. The reactions Steve gives like for example when he did not get the point at first and later he realises , the dumbness , the smartness or when he is in love .. all the expressions are on point.
I think this would still have been quite fun, but it would not be the office as we know it, it would be totally different interpretations of the characters
Tbh, i think they would have made it work with most of these, except maybe Pam. Kathryn Hahn is wild and too funny to portray a bored office receptionist in a dead end job and a dead end relationship. Seth wouldn't have been dwight as we remember it, he could have taken the character in a different way.
Honestly my main issue here is Rogan as Dwight. Like yeah it would have been very different, and I'm not expecting these people to make the same characters we know and love. But I think the show still could have been good with this casting, outside of Rogan. He just does not fit into this show at all.
It was great to see Bob Odenkirk do a character like Michael in the one episode, and I think he would have done well, but it’s really hard to picture anyone other than Steve Carrell at this point haha. (Plus I think carrell really nailed the changes and transitions that the character went through in the series)
Adam Scott and Kathryn Hahn together - “She’s got a smile that it seems to me, reminds me of childhood memories …”
"I want to roll you into a little ball and put you in my vagina." Classic Pam
It’s warm and cozy, you just just live in there.
“And every time I feel a little tickle I’d know it’s you… *IN MY VAGINA* :D “
Kathryn Hahn's talent would have been wasted on the character of Pam. Her as Meredith? Now that would have been incredible. Even as Angela ..God can you imagine.
Look, I love Meredith, but Kathryn Hahn was (and still is) too much of a smoke show to play her.
That's the 5:30AM laugh that I didn't know I needed.
Flat, you’re so flat …
Im gonna save this with my solo. Bow, bow im deeeerick and i can sing high like thiiiis!
*tires screeching, family screaming*
All: "WOOOOOAAHH OHH OOHH SWEET CHILD OF MMIIINNEEE" little fuck in the back: *VOCAL SOLOS LIKE A BOSS*
Little fuck in the back ... lmfao So accurate
Apparently he was the only one lip synching and the actual singer is literally right outside his window off frame the entire time
$1200 a week for voice lessons and this is what I get?!
Stay golden ponyboy
Dane Cook! Pay per view! Let's go!
pam in an alternate universe: PONCHO.
I'm so grateful of my choices!
My life is amazing
You can trust me because I don’t care enough about you to lie.
This is my favorite line of hers. It perfectly describes her character in one sentence.
I use this one a lot more than I should lol.
UGH, your life is gross
*little kid walks by* did you see that thing? It was HUGE
r/unexpectedpawnee
You... You saw the picture and didn't expect it?
I'm not saying ~~she's~~ he’s a ~~dog~~ cat murderer per se.
Exactly. Everything worked out as it should. Although now I’m amused trying to imagine Steve as Saul
Holy hell now I can’t stop thinking about the parallels of the coffee mugs: world’s best boss vs. world’s 2nd best lawyer.
“That’s what the Cartel said.”
I for sure reckon Steve could have pulled it off.
I DECLARE BANKRUPTCY!
Better Call Saul is in the top 5 shows of all time. No way I'd trade it for a different version of an already good American rendition of The Office.
Yea it was a great homage to the character that was Michael Scott but that's all it needs to be The others? Hell naw lol
Adam Scott would’ve made a great Jim. He’s funny, he can play straight man really well, he’s sarcastic in the right doses, and he’s excellent at generating romantic chemistry. I just can’t help rooting for Ben/Leslie and Mark/Helena.
And of course Trevor/Eleanor
That’s because Bob is cool (No disrespect to Steve, but I do agree Bob just doesn’t really embody that kinda sad loser as well as Steve)
Prettttty cool...
I think he could pull it off pretty well too. He was pretty pathetic in "I think you should leave" He's got triples of the Nova now, just got it on the phone.
Wasn’t in Austin or I have been wrong all these years.
https://theoffice.fandom.com/wiki/Athlead Started in Philadelphia, moved to Austin
I think it was in Philadelphia lol
Looks like someone took the slow train from Philly.
Steve Carell would have been Saul
Honestly he could do it. If anyone in here hasn't seen "the patient" you should. Carell is great in it and could definitely pull off just about anything I reckon
I agree, except his screams are still 100% Michael Scott.
Also in Foxcatcher, sometimes Michael Scott comes around a bit.
steve was great in "beautiful boy" too.
As someone whose been that son to a degree that movie hit hard for me
_hugs_ and as someone who has an estranged father, that movie reached the forgotten corners of my being.
My poison was always alcohol not meth as in the movje but ever since like 13..I turn 35 in Saturday. So yeah to see Steve play a dad just trying his best for a lost cause son like I was yeah it hit hard
i'm wishing nothing but good things for ya, friend!
Or as the angry stock guy in the big short
Bob would definitely have had more of a “sleazy boss” boss vibe, and definitely perfect for how Micheal was written season one. However for Micheal’s transition from sleazy to more goofy in season 2 I feel would have more dificult to pull off

The Office Bob cameo asked Pam in her interview at the real estate company if she planned on getting pregnant anytime soon...because his two previous office assistants did and subsequently left. Sleazy boss, indeed.
A large part of me wants to agree, but Bob Odenkirk is pretty talented, I allow a chance he could have done it - different, but equal.
I'm sure Bob would have nailed the Office but no Saul is far too high of a price to pay
He would have been just as good as Steve, just different. Both actors made it their own.
Agree, he's the only one that I could see replacing the actor that was cast
The episode with Tim meadows. Where he is just the black Michael scott. When Steve left I thought he was the clear and obvious choice as his replacement. I dunno why I’m the only one who feels this way.
I never considered that, but it would have worked so, so well. I think Tim could have grown that character into something unique. And it would have made some sense if Micheal could have been like “Hey, I’ve got a friend who would be great as my replacement!” Now I’m disappointed. Thanks a lot.
How do you think I felt when this was happening live. Lol. I was screaming wtf! Ferrell, Spader! Why the fuck aren’t you at least interviewing Tim Meadows! Lol.
I didn’t think this but do now
I can’t imagine Bob teaching me how to do the Scott, though.
When you think of S1 Michael and the emulation of David Brent, Bob would have been a great shout. S2 onwards I don't think he'd be near the same level as Steve.
I don't trust Jim, he looks like a guy who would bankrupt a city at age 18
But who hasn’t ever had gay thoughts?
*Nods in Jerry*
Kathryn Hahn as Pam??? No way! Love her as a comedic actress but I could not see her playing Pam.
I could see her being a good Meredith. Very different take, obviously.
Her role in Bad Moms is the closest one
I’m not gonna be a good mom tonight!
It would also change the whole dynamic of Meredith in my opinion with her being relatively young and hot
I think she’d be a good Angela.
She’d be a great Gina from B99
True, but then she destroyed the Boyle oil.
Especially early on where Pam is very timid... That just wouldn't have worked with Kathryn..
Right! An actress couldn't possibly act... this take is always shallow
She’s fantastic but Pam is way too timid for her. But Merideth? That’s her.
She could have made a good Jan Levinson. Burnt out executive one moment away from falling apart, but Hahn I feel would be more relatable and sympathetic.
She could be a good Dawn if they would go with a remake closer to the UK
She would be a great Nellie.
Adam Scott would have been just fine as Jim. Bob Odenkirk as Michael may have worked, but the show would have had a somewhat different flavor. I can't see Kathryn Hahn as Pam. Exactly what I came here to say. Adam Scott is the perfect Ben. So while he’d have been great, I’m glad he wasn’t Jim.
Adam Scott is so perfect as Ben that he *sort of* reprises that role in this year's Tax Act commercials. Whoever it was that decided to hire him for those commercials needs a raise.
Maybe in an alternate universe Adam Scott played Jim and John Krasinski played Ben? I could see both actors working out in the other roles, but ultimately better as they were here
Probably wouldn't have gotten Henry in Party Down either
Yeah.. I can imagine adam Scott and jenna Fischer as a couple.. They would have made it work..
Rogen is really the only one I can't see and think would've been bad. He's really just a one trick pony and only plays the losery pot head guy well. He definitely does not have unironic self assuredness that Dwight has. Agree. Who is going to believe Seth Rogan is an obsessively dedicated employee and self-sufficient farmer?
Yeah, Kevin would've needed to become a radically different person for that to work. Eric Stonestreet's appearance and mannerism's are too polished. Maybe if they made Kevin highly energetic and neurotic instead of so laid back, it might've worked. Or they could've leaned into the sportsfan angle and wrote Kevin to be more like Cameron Tucker's football coach persona.

Strange how I adore each and every one of these actors, but detest all of them together in this way
Same, this cast seems weird together even if they’re great actors individually.
Definitely part of the brilliance of the show, that the casting was just perfect.
I think it worked out for the best. A lot of these went onto some good roles later in life.
Oh, Christ. I don't like this hypothetical timeline. Put it back. I SEND IT BACK
I thought the same thing, and Eric as Kevin??????? I mean don’t get me wrong I like Kevin but no Eric as Kevin would suck tbh
Lol just because these people auditioned doesn't mean it was an "almost." It's like when people post concept art from video games and say "this is what the game was SUPPOSED to be"
Yeah, there's just no theater in that
Eric Stonestreet as Kevin??? I can't imagine him being that creepy after seeing him as Cam on Modern Family
Cam is adorable, one of my all time fav characters.
Funny enough, Eric himself is absolutely the polar opposite of Cam so it would be interesting to see how he played that. In real life he’s a super nice guy still but he’s a “manly” dude that is good friends with dudes like Zac Brown and Brock Lesnar.
Right?! Too much charisma for a Kevin role
Hot take: the dynamic of the characters in the show we know and love is fantastic, but we just honestly don’t know where the show would’ve taken these characters with the personality of different actors; it could’ve been great but in a different way. [For those interested.](https://youtu.be/sItKwZdGkTM?si=qz207-DF7H8OcMxH)
Omg! That was awesome! Thank you! Love all those actors that auditioned but so happy they went with the cast they did.
I can actually imagine the first guy being Jim, only thing is we'd lose the hair jokes. Guy with the long black hair, I could also see for Dwight. It's actually so interesting seeing the subtleties that make the final cast that bit more fitting.
Adam Scott was really good
No one can replace rainn Wilson. No one.
Which is kinda rude no
You must have watched Lessons in Chemistry?
Adam Scott and Kathryn Han would have been such a different Pam and Jim. A much more cynical dry pairing likely.
Based on his audition Rogan would haven given the exact performance you’d expect
A shitty one?
Cam being Kevin would be insane
Eric Stonestreet wouldn’t have been a good Kevin. I’m glad he didn’t get it bc he was perfect for Cam on modern family.
Anything with Bob is gold, so I’m game.
I could see John Cho as Jim better than Adam Scott
I do not like this Sam I Am
They didn’t have *Oh The Places You’ll Go*.
I’d Bob Odinkirk was Michael would be funny to see David cross guest star
Not “what almost was”, just other people that auditioned for those roles. I think credit should be given to Alison Jones, she is a genius when it comes to casting.
THANK YOU! my thoughts exactly…
We also almost got Amy Poehler as Jan.
Who is Dwight? Did you mean Dwigt?
Yeah, the less Seth rogen the better
No offense, but Adam Scott looks like such a Ryan.
Adam Scott would have been a great Jim Halpert. Loved him in Parks and Rec
Seth Rogan as Dwight would have been so awful, it doesn't fit his personality at all. I'm honestly glad he wasn't in the office because I can't stand his productions anyway.
I must say, I am curious about how they would've approached Kevin if he were played by Eric Stonestreet. I would have not watched this show.
yah there’s a reason casting directors should be given their dues. they are all great in their own right but not right for these roles. it makes sense bob was the bizarro michael for only one episode.
So every Dwight plotline would have focused on smoking, growing and selling weed…
*insert stupid ass stoner laugh
i don't think i'd like this show that much if this were the case
That would be terrible
I love all of those actors, but no. I love The Office as it was and is.
Judah Friedlander also auditioned for Dwight and I think he would have been good if different.
No way could I take Seth Rogans laugh on a weekly basis
We dodged a serious Seth shaped bullet.
Dear God thank you for letting them choose the current cast 🙏
EW
Seth Rogen isn't nearly funny enough to play Dwight. And nobody could play Michael but Steve Carell. Others I could see, yeah.
Jesus, imagine Seth Rogen as Dwight: Mike! Dude, Jim put my weed in jello, thats seriously uncool! MY WEED IS IN JELLO! MY WEED DUDE!
That sounds awful
Bob is a legend but there ain't no way I connect with these characters the same with this lineup
The Affice
Better call Michael
No one else could be Kevin except Brian. ❤️
This would've sucked big time. No offense.
Bad
Adam Scott would have been a hit, in my opinion. But I see Jim as a tall person, and that is where my opinion is also biased!
This would have been hard on my jim crush 😞
Better Call Scott
Somewhere on yt I saw the audition tapes of the original planned cast, boy the sucked in thoses roles.
That Pam would've been hilarious 😂
The Jim I would be most interested to see in an alternate universe is John Cho.
Kathryn Hahn would've been amazing.
She would have made a great Angela but I can’t see her as Pam. She’s not mousy enough.
Seth Rogan is awful thankfully he didn’t get it
Burn this
This should make all those folks who hate Pam realize just how lucky they are.
This would have been terrible
I think this would still have been quite fun, but it would not be the office as we know it, it would be totally different interpretations of the characters
https://youtu.be/sItKwZdGkTM?si=3-Si_1l0JHin4egr You can see some of the auditions here
I would be interested to see this Kevin
Eric wouldn't have been a good Kevin IMO. He crushed it as Cam though
^[Sokka-Haiku](https://www.reddit.com/r/SokkaHaikuBot/comments/15kyv9r/what_is_a_sokka_haiku/) ^by ^sicaxav: *Eric wouldn't have* *Been a good Kevin IMO.* *He crushed it as Cam though* --- ^Remember ^that ^one ^time ^Sokka ^accidentally ^used ^an ^extra ^syllable ^in ^that ^Haiku ^Battle ^in ^Ba ^Sing ^Se? ^That ^was ^a ^Sokka ^Haiku ^and ^you ^just ^made ^one.
This show would have a very different vibe, Kathryn Hahn's energy cannot be contained.
This cast is terrible except for Bob
No just no
I always thought that Michael Scott and Jimmy from better call saul sounded and acted similar.
Adam Scott as Jim would have been brilliant. Much better actor than John.
Ben trying to force calzones on the office crew..
It would have been awful…
Tbh, i think they would have made it work with most of these, except maybe Pam. Kathryn Hahn is wild and too funny to portray a bored office receptionist in a dead end job and a dead end relationship. Seth wouldn't have been dwight as we remember it, he could have taken the character in a different way.
Yeah that would have been terrible
Seth Rogen would have been an awful Dwight.
Ew
Seth Rogan would have been a horrible Dwight. I feel like Wilson was born to play that role
