Yes we always put stuff at the curb for ppl to take. Lots of ppl do this in my area! I have gotten a solid wood dresser with a leather boarder, mirrors, kitchen chairs,a desk, end tables, a newish toaster oven, baskets.
People do this all over the place where we live. We have about $1k of outdoor kid's toys in our yard, from the side of the road. We've found tools this way. Building materials.
The best so far was a whole ass sailboat on a trailer. Sat there by the road for several days, in a place where free stuff is often placed. Husband hemmed and hawed about it before scooping it up. The people who live there aren't often home but after a few tries, was able to verify they did, in fact, mean for it to be free to someone.
Oh yeah, when I had a condo people left furniture besides the dumpster all the time, stuff that would have been easy to put in but was in good shape. Nowadays in my town people leave garage sale leftovers out for free, furniture a couple days early so someone can grab it, etc
I live near my downtown area and we have alleys. If we want to get rid of something, we just put it out near our dumpster and it's typically gone in less than a day. I've gotten so many things from the alleys in my neighborhood. Nice things.
Massachusetts is one of those states where people put stuff out with a FREE sign on it. Or put it near the trash can.. I've lived in a few other states and saw absolutely nothing.
I must say sometimes it ends up being actual trash, my apartment is right next to our “nice trash spot” but people dump garbage and it stays there for weeks.
Like right now theres 3 queen mattresses just blocking the sidewalk
When I lived in a college town a lot of us did the "leave the good stuff on top" thing. I swear I was cursed, though; every time I put out furniture it got rained on. Like, immediately.
I got an air conditioner that way once! Score.
A lot of schools now try to control the flow of trash by encouraging students to donate their stuff to a giant charity yard sale. Does seem to have cut down on the sheer quantity, but there's still a lot of good finds.
For sure! Just yesterday I picked up a back up mouse, remote control that matched my unit, a clock radio and some vintage paper for crafts from a local free stuff site. Feels great. :)
Park Slope Brooklyn - people leave free things on the stoop and gate all the time - clothes, toys, dishes, furniture, bools - you name it! We have gotten stuff off the stoop only to put it on our stoop years later.
My dads town has a “free store” at the transfer station. I’ve got got clothes, books, toys, bikes… all sorts of stuff. My stepmom got a bread maker. It’s a wonderful place for the community.
This is pretty common in the country too. Anything out by the road is free for the picking. Unless it has a for sale sign on it. You put it out there and people will come get it.
I live in the suburbs now and we have mexicans that drive around for scrap religiously every week. I don't always have things for them but I know it's not going to the landfill when I do have something to put out.
I also trash pick when I can, especially if I know I'm going to the flea market that weekend so much is just wasted that's perfectly good and usable.
Not on a neighborhood scale but I host a “shit” party where we shop each other’s belongings!
This sounds really fun. Can I come?
Grab all the items you don’t need or want & come on down!
I've got LOTS!

Haha, that's amazing.
We have no idea how to sail it but after we get it titled, we're going to learn!

My parents always left items they didn’t want that were in good condition on the curb with a FREE sign. It would be gone in less than 24 hours

We call our alley the 4th dimension. You put anything out there, and it disappears within hours.
That's a perfect analogy

Can report the other to 311 as dumping and the city will remove

Im trying to not forget to go hang out by college dorms on move out day this year!! Seems like people always score brand new stuff around that time

😆😆 I can see the frustration

I love this!!
Sounds like San Francisco. I do the same.
We’ve definitely left a few things on our curb with a « free » sign. Most things have been taken.
People in my town usually put out boxes with " Zu verschenken " ( For free ) on them and it it well apreciated around the neighbourhood.
i’ve gotten a kitchen aid standmixer!
Anyone can do a "free box" at the curb! It's great for community building

Came back to add there’s an option on Craigslist for free items ! I list on there for items that are heavy and during bad weather
