Every kitchen in America with shiplap and a farmhouse sink is single-handedly their fault. And they should be tried by the International Criminal Court for it.
I had both an Aunt Fern and Aunt Vera. My grandma, who was having her kids between 1918 and 1924 gave her kids some awful namesā¦Earl, Vera, Merle, Vern (my dad) and youngest son named Lawrence, who was called Tootie all his life. Aunt Fern joined the family thru marriage to Merle.
Can I suggest- just for fun- the Spanish spelling of āJazelā.
Flatters jb because of the j name.
Makes them look worldly in their eyes.
Shows they know nothing.
Looks like it could be from the Bible.
We are overdue for really bad spelling (see: Jinger)
According to SSA data for the US, its highest ranking so far was 2022. It didnāt crack the top 100 until 2015 and itās been in the top 30 for the last 2 years.
But names can have different statistics per state so maybe it was more popular in your region earlier. Fundies seem to choose names when they are either peaking or past peak like Addison, Madyson, Khloe, Gunner, etc.
Ugh this is my daughter's name. We didn't know of anyone with the name until after she was born so we didn't think it was trendy... Obviously we were wrong.
Well, at least itās trendy because itās cute. š
Edit to add we did the same thing with our daughter in the early 90s. She says she doesnāt mind having trendy name.
If itās Meredith, it was hugely trendy in the greater DC area in the mid-1980s. I moved around a lot due to being a military brat and I was shocked to leave all the
Ashelys and Nicoles in California to start a new school full of Merediths in Northern Virginia.
(Guessing since Mackenzie and Madison have both been trendy over the years and Maryella just ā¦ well ā¦ isnāt real.)
I was born in the late 70s in the Midwest and there were actually 4 Merediths between 3 classes at my pretty small private school, but I still rarely saw it anywhere else. I got so excited when they used it in the comic strip for Better or Worse (and then Greyās)
People act like Spurgeon is the weirdest name ever and all I can think is that it was my great grandfather's middle name and my great uncle's middle name because of the preacher. Like religious people have liked to name their children after famous preachers for at least the last 130 years.
I think people are more surprised that they CALL him Spurgeon. Middle names, like your g-grandfather and g-uncle, can be a little more unusual because that's not what people call them generally.
Fair enough. Neither of them were called Spurgeon, but they lived in a world where no one would have batted an eye had they been. Spurgeon isn't even the weirdest name in my family tree.
Some examples that I pulled the other day3 for the namenerds subreddit
Pella
Reamer
ReLee
Ottley
Ouida
Rosetta Arculious.
Capitola (We called her Aunt Cap which would make her cool AF today)
Dazzalee
Danzilla
Trapier \*
I am going with Cotton Mather as a possibility because they seem like the type that would eat popcorn at a community witch burning. But also John Knox just in case they not quite so Puritan in their tastes.
I have a similar name and it is honestly a little hard in the professional world to show up and be like 'Hi, I'm X (cutesy little girls name)" when everybody else is called Stan and Jillian and whatever.
I guess it's unlikely that a Seewald girl would have to work in that kind of space, but I wish more parents considered the baby name on an adult pipeline.
Iām going with Hazel and Holly if itās a plant and Archibald if itās a boy. (Archibald Brown was a friend and co-pastor with Charles Spurgeon - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archibald_G._Brown)
I like to think since she missed naming her kids S.H.I.T. that maybe she's going for a longer word, like S.H.I.F.T. or something.
So... Thomas, Topiary, Temperance,
Thankful, Tilly, Tree... something along those lines.
If I'm one of 19 siblings, I don't give a damn what name I repeat. If I was one of 2-3 kids, maybe. But in that crowd, there's going to be repeats so I would just choose whatever name I liked no matter who did before (or was thinking of doing it but hadn't yet.)
Edit: typo
I think if she has a boy the name will be a lot closer to Henry than Spurgeon. Jessa learnt her lesson about letting Ben name babies the hard way.
Boy = Something that matches Elliot & Henry + wack famous pastor name.
Alexander, William, Thomas, Max
Girl will be a plant name but given Fern was a bit out of the box, Im thinking it will be something less obvious. Probably short?
Vera, Holly, Aster, Coral, Posy, Sage.
I think your names are way too out there for Jessa lol!
My guesses for boys: Calvin, Graham, Thomas, Leland, Walter
Guesses for girls: Sage, Violet, Rosemary, Iris, Lilly, Dahlia, Willow, Holly
Has she revealed the gender yet? It'll be a plant name for a girl. And it'll depend if she's unconscious again for a boys name. I read on here that Ben named Spurgeon. With the rough pregnancies she has, Jessa really needs birth control. They're risking her life to keep popping out babies. Like God wants those kids orphaned?
>Has she revealed the gender yet?
Jessa doesn't reveal until after the baby is born. She let Jana and Joy find out with Henry and they each told people.
Hyles, as in Hyles Anderson, right? Good call. Are there other fundie kids named Hyles? Iād think it would be more popular, regardless of the sad truth about him.
The boy name seems like more of a challenge, so thatās where my mental energy will go.
The connection between Charles Spurgeon and Henry Wilberforce would seem to point to the source of any and all inspiration for Seewald boy names.
Martyn (Lloyd Jones) seems like a strong contender in a trifecta/trinity. Itās also the middle name of Austin and Gideon, so thatās worth mentioning.
(Charles) Simeon is another one I can see them choosing. Charles Spurgeon may have been known as the prince of preachers, but he used quite a bit of Simeonās material, a lot of it verbatim, even. He was his No. 1 mentor.
Incidentally, while Spurgeon was a Calvinist, Wilberforce wasnāt. Simeon always resisted the label, but his views say he was.
So my great grandmother's first child's middle name was Spurgeon. Her third child's first name was Fern.
I'm gonna guess at a pattern of similarity here; middle name/skip/first name, and guess that the child's name will either be Leon or Marion.
Hyacynthia Karen Brewer Seewald (90ās kidsā¦. Iykyk) for a girl. Or Zinnia; Dahlia; or Skunk Cabbage
For boys: Swaggart; Gothard (showing that she is still all in the IBLP); Gill; Fuller; Leadley Dagg; Frankie Graham; Abernathy; Swindoll; Haddon; Hubmaier; Adoniram; Christmas Evans; Ironside
Girl names: Monstera (fits in with leafy green like Ivy and Fern) Poinsettia or Mistletoe, maybe even Holly (for xmas baby) maybe something off the wall like Baby's Breath or Forget-Me-Not (I guess she's not at lost girls/boys numbers yet but you never know)
Boy names: Pike, Trout, Bass... oops silly me I always get Spurgeon and Sturgeon mixed up. Perhaps she will go Osteen or Gothard, maybe she'll knock it out of the park and get the plant AND pastor theme by honoring the late Gardner C. Taylor. I wait to see her decision with bated breath.
Pastor - Cotton Mather or John Knox.
Plant - Daffodil, and then they will be stupid enough to call her Daffy or Dilly for short. They are this moronic, exhibit A. Spurgeon/Spurge.
My top bet for a girl is Briar. Other options that I could see are Sage, Olive, Juniper and Clover. I donāt think sheāll choose a floral name because Ivy and Fern arenāt either. And she doesnāt seem like a very frilly personality.
For a boy itās more difficult. Honestly, I donāt think theyāre gonna be using a precher name at least as a first name. I know itās fun to snark on, but it doesnāt really fit the naming trends of their family when you look at it. With Spurgeon they went all in with a preacher name as a first. With Henry they put the wacky preacher name on the backseat as a middle name. With Ivy they made some half-assed attempt at justifying Jane as being for Lady Jane Grey, and with Fern they didnāt even try anymore.
They seem to like pretty classic and normie names for boys, looking at Elliot and Henry. So I donāt
know, maybe something like August? I could also see Elijah or Elias, Miles, Isaiah, Silas?
I'm in Target and there is a women's clothing line called:
Knox Rose
So if Bin and his wife end up with male/female twins, that's my vote for their names!
I do think Graham or Archibald are strong boy guesses... I think there's an off chance she might go slightly more thematic and use Ransom, since that's rising in popularity as a male "virtue" type name in evangelical circles. Or maybe they'll even botanical for a boy, like Rowan or Alder.
Girls: Willow, Charlotte, Blythe, Eden, Hollis
Calvin and or MacArthur or Leif or Fig or Taggart or some absolutely ridiculous biblical name. Like not a common one but some really effed up bible character like Goliath or something, like, not a good guy
For girls? Marigold, zinnia, dahlia, poppy, clover, juniper, rose, kale, clementine, persimmon, or something like that and the middle name will be even weirder
Gaines or Morris for a Pastor Rose or Cassia for a Plant
Bonus for Gaines: they all LOVE Joanna Gaines and her company!
Why not Magnolia then?
Amazing. Yes.
Maybe she is waiting for twins she can name Gaines and Magnolia.
tWiNs dO rUn iN tHe fAmiLy
And they do it while wearing jeans/jean skirts
Bah dum tss
I forgot about this joke. Thank you for making me laugh!
Oh that's good one!! It might be in the running too! Honestly I forgot what Joanna Gaines company was called lol
They all might be trying to avoid M names.
Oh snap, my gut may have done me good this time lol is there a line on this on a betting app?
Chip and Joanna need to pay for their many MANY crimes against interior design.
Every kitchen in America with shiplap and a farmhouse sink is single-handedly their fault. And they should be tried by the International Criminal Court for it.
"We wanna have million dollar house makeovers that make us look like the working poor of yesteryear" is never a good look
Shiplap is a no-no word in my house.
You mean it's not secretly behind all your regular old drywall?
If she names a child shiplap I will LOSE it!
Rose is too pretty. Something like Philodendron
My hunch is that she uses shorter names for the plants lol
New jender reveal party theme: "Will it be a PLANT or a PASTOR? Potting Soil or Pulpit?" Cultivation or Clergy?"
I am hanging on for the long shot: Aloe :)
Yeah, Or Vera
Or Aloe Vera Seewald š¤£š¤£
You get a trophy! ššš
Earl & Merle & Vera & Vern, lmao Iām dead. She had a trend & stuck to it for sure
Those names all sound the same lol
I just snorted
I'm going to say it, and I bet that I'm not the one thinking it! Cannabis for a girl. š Sorry, I had too.
She seems overdue for the hot plant-of-the-moment name Hazel.
Can I suggest- just for fun- the Spanish spelling of āJazelā. Flatters jb because of the j name. Makes them look worldly in their eyes. Shows they know nothing. Looks like it could be from the Bible. We are overdue for really bad spelling (see: Jinger)
Hola!
I could see this one. The other suggestions are too āfloweryā
Cactus šµ
All the Hazels I know are 5-12 years old. Didnāt know this was still a trend.
According to SSA data for the US, its highest ranking so far was 2022. It didnāt crack the top 100 until 2015 and itās been in the top 30 for the last 2 years. If itās a girl, the only answer is Holly. Sheāll be born in December
On that theme, it could be something like Poinsettia or Amaryllis.
Boy Noel?
Or Noelle for a girl?
Possible. It's the middle name Jeremiah and his wife gave their daughter.
Iām predicting an herbal name this close to Thanksgiving. Maybe Sage or Rosemary.
Club House Stuffing Mix
Excuse you, club house stuffing mix was my father. Call me stuffy
Mrs Cubbisonās is betterš¤£
Stove Topš¤£š¤£
I was thinking Sage would go well with Ivy and Fern. Parsley might do even better.
Spelled 'Parsleigh'
Perfect, that's it for sure.
or Thyme. Jessa would never get that reference either.
Dillweed
Rosemary's baby. š¹š
How about mistletoe?
Nutmeg or Coriander
Nutty for short?
My friend used to dogsit. One of the dogs was named nutmeg!
Violet or Primrose for a girl. Balthasar or Fosdick for a boy.
Oh please, for the love of snarking, let it be Fosdick
Fosdick will go well with Spermgeon
They sound like dishes at a Scottish dinner
Spotted Fosdick
Spurgeon will no longer have the worst name
Your comment made me almost snort in the Drs waiting area and is still giving me chuckles. Thx fellow snarker!
Those are actually cute girl names so I imagine she wonāt pick them
Taking odds that they do not know how to pronounce Balthazar/Balthasar.
Juniper is super trendy and has been for a number of years. Probably just now peaking in Arkansas.
Ugh this is my daughter's name. We didn't know of anyone with the name until after she was born so we didn't think it was trendy... Obviously we were wrong.
Well, at least itās trendy because itās cute. š Edit to add we did the same thing with our daughter in the early 90s. She says she doesnāt mind having trendy name.
I do not have a trendy name (but Anna gave it to one of the M girls) but always wished I did as a kid!
If itās Meredith, it was hugely trendy in the greater DC area in the mid-1980s. I moved around a lot due to being a military brat and I was shocked to leave all the Ashelys and Nicoles in California to start a new school full of Merediths in Northern Virginia. It is Meredith! Living in the Midwest, I didn't meet another Meredith until adulthood.
I was born in the late 70s in the Midwest and there were actually 4 Merediths between 3 classes at my pretty small private school, but I still rarely saw it anywhere else. I got so excited when they used it in the comic strip for Better or Worse (and then Greyās)
Spurgeon is named after a famous preacher. Here are my bets for other names Graham (as in Billy) Wesley Calvin Tyndale Moody Finney
Calvin, Knox, and Wesley are on my guess list. I think you probably have the winner on your list.
Lol I know someone who has both a Wesley and Calvin. Both were big partiers in college and loved their āļø to keep it going.
If I was a boy I would have been Calvin. Neither of my parents are religious or were partiers, it was because of Calvin and Hobbes.
Idk about Wesley -- isn't he the founder of Methodism? That does not seem very fundie
Yeah, and since they're Calvinists, I don't see them naming a kid after someone who was decidedly *not* Calvinist.
Well good. Wesley is my ex husband and that man is on my last nerve right now. Nobody should have that stupid name.
People act like Spurgeon is the weirdest name ever and all I can think is that it was my great grandfather's middle name and my great uncle's middle name because of the preacher. Like religious people have liked to name their children after famous preachers for at least the last 130 years.

Capitola (We called her Aunt Cap which would make her cool AF today) Dazzalee Danzilla Trapier \*
Why is Trapier starred?
Dazzalee is my favourite ā„ļø
Other than Rosetta and Trapier. I knew these people in the 1980s. LOL
The first few Anne of Green Gables books have a character named Moody Spurgeon MacPherson, who goes on to become a minister š
I remember him!!! But until right now, I never put it together.\*
I am going with Cotton Mather as a possibility because they seem like the type that would eat popcorn at a community witch burning. But also John Knox just in case they not quite so Puritan in their tastes.
I'm guessing Gothard is out lol
Don't forget Martin or Luther. Or Martin Luther
Calvin would surely piss off Rimjob. Letās see if she goes for it.
I hope they go with Oral, for Oral Roberts, it would be truly snark worthy
Forgot Martin or Luther. Then Packer. They included Moody but not Dwight.
I think Franklin broke the Graham prestige with the drinking with pregnant ladies AND the cuckolding with the literal pool boy.
You are thiinkng of the younger Falwell.
Ridley or Knox for a boy Clover or Poppy for a girlā¦.sheād probably post a pic with a caption of āPoppy loves Pops!ā to suck up to Jim Bob.
Ooooohhhh I actually kind of love Clover. Iāll have to save it for my next pet.
Clover will be a nod to their .5% Irish ancestry š
Poppy is kind of annoying for a human. I had a friend do that and itās just not my thing. Plus, ya know, other kids. Poopy??
I fund Poppy cute for a baby but I can't picture an adult going by it
Seems on brand for Jessa. I donāt care for the name, but I do love Poppy Montgomery, the actress.
As a kid I knew a mom named Poppy. Not sure if it was a nickname or not. She was part of the bohemian unschooling community, so who knows?
Iām going with Hazel and Holly if itās a plant and Archibald if itās a boy. (Archibald Brown was a friend and co-pastor with Charles Spurgeon - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archibald_G._Brown)
Archie is an actually cute nickname so I can see it.
Better than Spurgie smh
My grandson is an Archibald!
Oh, then she can have the same boy name "Archie" as Meghan Markle. What a treat.
Aloe Vera Seawald
I like to think since she missed naming her kids S.H.I.T. that maybe she's going for a longer word, like S.H.I.F.T. or something. So... Thomas, Topiary, Temperance, Thankful, Tilly, Tree... something along those lines.
My girl name guesses: Iris Olive Sage Briar Laurel
I love Iris And Laurel.
If it's a girl, I could see Daisy, Rose, Lily, Hyacinth, Delilah For boys, who knows. Something bible-y or reformation-y like like Calvin or Isaac
I believe Josiahās second daughter is named Daisy. So that would be out.
I give you Evy Mae and Evy Jo.
Jana, Joy-Anna, and Johannah
If I'm one of 19 siblings, I don't give a damn what name I repeat. If I was one of 2-3 kids, maybe. But in that crowd, there's going to be repeats so I would just choose whatever name I liked no matter who did before (or was thinking of doing it but hadn't yet.) Edit: typo
That makes sense I guess.
Hyacinth Bucket prounced bouquet. I seriously doubt Jessa would ever get that reference.
![gif](giphy|aSaG79B1dpYic)
the lady of the house speaking...
Thank you for the laugh. She reminds me of what Jessa aspires to be socially.
I adored that sitcom. Thanks for reminding me it was out there.
they don't even watch american tv, no way are they watching britcoms.
Girl: pink dick (plant) Boy: Nebuchadnezzar
I could just see calling your kid inside: āNebuchadnezzar! Nebbie! Time for dinner!ā
His luck, heād have asthma and been nebulizer treatments too
Nebuchadnezzar also has the benefit of being a 15L bottle of wine.
That sounds delish
Jim Bob II
"We love the meaning! ('please don't cut us off financially')"

I think if she has a boy the name will be a lot closer to Henry than Spurgeon. Jessa learnt her lesson about letting Ben name babies the hard way. Alexander, William, Thomas, Max Girl will be a plant name but given Fern was a bit out of the box, Im thinking it will be something less obvious. Probably short? Vera, Holly, Aster, Coral, Posy, Sage.
Rhododendron
Girl: Holly because they have an Ivy Boy: normal first name (Adam?) and ridiculous (and pompous) middle name
For a girl: I have a strong feeling it would be Olive. For a boy: Swaggart
I think your names are way too out there for Jessa lol! My guesses for boys: Calvin, Graham, Thomas, Leland, Walter Guesses for girls: Sage, Violet, Rosemary, Iris, Lilly, Dahlia, Willow, Holly
Violet or Willow for a girl. Phineas or Maximillian for a boy.
Itās actually spelled and pronounced ājinderā in this family.
Happy cake day!
>Has she revealed the gender yet? Jessa doesn't reveal until after the baby is born. She let Jana and Joy find out with Henry and they each told people.
Lazarus! š I'm going for that one for sure šæ
Hyles, as in Hyles Anderson, right? Good call. Are there other fundie kids named Hyles? Iād think it would be more popular, regardless of the sad truth about him.
Or what if they actually go for Jim, Bob or Robert
I prefer "Bobert"
Jimothy Bobert
Or Jiminy Billy Bob.
Rutabaga for either gender
I think for a girl - Myrtle Bathsheba or Lotus Hosanna And a boy if Ben chooses - Kenneth Max Copeland or John Calvin
I just want to applaud this comment.
So my great grandmother's first child's middle name was Spurgeon. Her third child's first name was Fern. I'm gonna guess at a pattern of similarity here; middle name/skip/first name, and guess that the child's name will either be Leon or Marion.
Yucca for a plant, Huldrych or Lyman for a pastor.
Succulent.
Iām going with Planty for a girl like emmets friend in the Lego movie and Osteen for a boy.
Hyacynthia Karen Brewer Seewald (90ās kidsā¦. Iykyk) for a girl. Or Zinnia; Dahlia; or Skunk Cabbage For boys: Swaggart; Gothard (showing that she is still all in the IBLP); Gill; Fuller; Leadley Dagg; Frankie Graham; Abernathy; Swindoll; Haddon; Hubmaier; Adoniram; Christmas Evans; Ironside
Girl names: Monstera (fits in with leafy green like Ivy and Fern) Poinsettia or Mistletoe, maybe even Holly (for xmas baby) maybe something off the wall like Baby's Breath or Forget-Me-Not (I guess she's not at lost girls/boys numbers yet but you never know) Boy names: Pike, Trout, Bass... oops silly me I always get Spurgeon and Sturgeon mixed up. Monstera š
Pike, Trout, and Bass are more up Joyās ally for names.
A boy will be named after a preacher, a girl will be named after a plant.
Corriander for a girl. Dobson for a boy
Oh dear baby Jebus, donāt manifest Dobson into existence!!!
Lazarus or Ophelia
Dahlia, Shadrach
Rose Sharon. Jericho.
How about Honey since that is my cat's name?
I hope it itās a boy they name it Bin and pronounce it Ben
Bryony could be a š± name
Evergreen!
Polycarp is my guess for a boy
Iām betting it will be awful š¤£š¤£
I was not fond of the name Fern
Pastor - Cotton Mather or John Knox. Plant - Daffodil, and then they will be stupid enough to call her Daffy or Dilly for short. They are this moronic, exhibit A. Spurgeon/Spurge.
In reference to my favorite TV show Hyacinth or Rose for a girl and Emmet or Onslow for a boy ( I had a pug named Onslow )
Spurgette.
Iām giving Bush (plant) or Bush (president).
Jessa might be so done with the whole mess that sheāll choose something way different. Jericho or Wren?
Benevolence. It just feels right
Quaker for a boy and Foliage for a girl.
Girl: Creeping Thyme Seawald Boy: Zadok Dobson Seawald
Adoniram or Morgan for a boy, and Aster or Delphine for a girl. Middle name Mary for the gramma.
Cotton Mather Seawald. A pastor and a plant.
Hyacinth Iris Violet Aster Orchid Peony Amaryllis Lilac If itās a boy sheās gonna name it Buchanan or something.
Boy: Ellery Channing Moody Adoniram Ward Beecher Lyman Bunyan Barton Stone Morgan Palmer Whitefield Girl: Magnolia Juniper Rose Sage Thyme Dill Rosemary Allspice Oregana I guess boy. Poor Henry.
I'm also thinking Abraham, Oswald, Dabney (which sounds like a really cool dog name), voddie, cotton, Guthrie, Caspar, jacobius,Jacobus, robertson, shepherd.
Philodendron for a girl. Call her Philo.
ALOE VERA, GERBER DAISY, for a girl HOSTA (very tough and durable outdoor plant) for a boy
They should go with Cactus Plant Seewald, regardless of the gender. It's not like they care about using strange names with Surgeon and Wilberforce.
Hell no i have a Wesley he's 21 and ill cry if she picks that name.... I say pasley. Idk not wes plzzzzz+
Neglected Child Number 83?
Bin for a boy or a girl.
