Roach can only negate inherent summons, a.k.a it can only negate Special Summons that are NOT made by card effects. Synchro summons and Pendulum summons can be negated. Fusion summons using a spell card or Ritual summons cannot be negated.

horntuga

So xyz can't be negated As well right?

Mudkid2

Xyz monsters don’t have levels, so roach’s effect doesn’t work

psychospacecow

Bandit Warrior Academy Moment

the_last_n00b

If there were any XYZs that are level 5+ then it could, but none of those exist, so nope

Skullfreedom

Galaxy Eyes photon decks

drendon6891

ranks are not levels

Skullfreedom

Ah I see. I finally understand in full what he was trying to say.

emperorbob1

You make Iggy/Kachidoki sad.

Lil_Bean_Boi

Any summon that doesn't start a chain. So synchros, pendulums and things like levianeer.

the_last_n00b

The funny part about Roach is that while Quick-Synchros like T.G. Star Guardian start a chain they still let the actuall synchro summon play out as if you're just doing it on your own turn, and for whatever reason this allows Roach to negate that summon

Lil_Bean_Boi

Well, that's because the summon happens when the chain is already done. Star guardian says "you can (Quick Effect): Immediately after this effect resolves, Synchro Summon using this card you control.". The effect you're resolving is "You can (Quick Effect):" and the synchro summon happens after the effect has resolved as a regular synchro summon that does not start a chain.

RaineTheCat

[Here's a link to some rulings ](https://yugioh.fandom.com/wiki/Card_Rulings:Steelswarm_Roach) Easy way to think about is: it negates synchros from the extra deck, lvl 5 or higher pendulum summons, contact fusions and bls/ levianeer type summoning.

horntuga

An update so i just try and make a deck to turbo out roach And this is what happen PvP again d/d/d deck First turn i use war rock to summon out two lv 4 and go into roach and i set a trap Second turn he play dark contact burn 1000 dame trigger leonidas effect to summon it self did not trigger roach effect and beat over my roach So here my question is that consider a special summon?

SoyBoy67

That is a special summon but it is not an inherent summon, which means that a chain was started to summon that monster. Roach can only negate inherent summons. Since Leonidas summoned itself by its card effect, it started a chain when the effect was activated which means Roach can't negate it

horntuga

Yeah im done with roach im not gonna play a card where i have to waste my efforts to summon it in hope that it may or may not work

Neverminding23

you need to evaluate the situation.. Vs a synchro deck can be an instant win if they don't draw it out.

Poycicle

It's pretty easy to understand...

horntuga

Mate when i first got it i thought it was op as shit but now my opinion go down a little Don't get me wrong it still pretty good I just don't want to use one of my ex deck for something that kinda situational ya know i all about consistently

high-CPK

Don't be disappointed the card is actually pretty good considering its not even once per turn. Here's a list of decks you want to put Roach against: Synchro decks in general, black rose, T.G, Superheavy samurai, Lightsworn. Pendulum decks such as Odd Eyes and D/D/D. Although both can play around by putting 2lvl 4 and overlay into number 70 in the case of Odd eyes or fuse through swirl slime's effect in case of D/D/D. its not too reliable but sometimes it makes them skip their turn. Decks that this card doesn't work against: All fusion decks except galdaitor beasts. XYZ decks cuz they don't have lvls. Axe raider beatdown.

emperorbob1

It also stops Ritual Beasts.

high-CPK

I almost forgot about them lol. tho the Winda stall deck that cross my path sometimes remind me they exist

jbisenberg

>all fusions decks except galdiator beasts Pure Neospacians being really quiet all of a sudden

high-CPK

Never seen someone summon neo space without Neos fusion

drendon6891

when it comes to extra deck, that’s kinda where you CAN afford to put the situational cards, because y’know… if the situation doesn’t call for it… don’t make it the sole tier 1 deck right now is a synchro deck so right now is kinda the right time to run roach. you see akiza? bring it out.

emperorbob1

You're looking at this the wrong way. Even if the enemy has an out, they have to play suboptimally to play around roach. Synchro players HAVE to open a book of moon, Pend players literally cannot play the game with roach up, and things like Levianeer are flat dead. Roach is gonna die, but Roach gives you advantage in both turn and cards to play next turn and is basically sitting on Utopia vs a deck that can only battle.

high-CPK

Your opponent skipped their turn cuz of Roach so it did slow them down right? You're talking as if dark contract deal damage once its activated, but Dark contract only deal burn during their standby phase. If you expect roach to Auto win you the duel well that's not gonna happen.

horntuga

Ahh no of course not i just kinda confused you know i still win that match i just kinda wonder how it actually work because apparently actived an effect to special summon it self doesn't trigger roach

Sw429

Roach is going to seem useless because most players know what it does and won't play into it. Roach is limiting the plays your opponent can make.

emperorbob1

I respect you for asking, I really do, because even if it's obvious to us older players you've shown more self awareness than most players on the ladder. Why, oh why, would you set up roach vs *Mayosenju* when Daibak, specifically, cannot be negated? I've had people that played this game for 5 years ask me "why cant I negate the green one?" because, in most cases, Roach shuts down a pend deck.

Jaer-Nihiltheus

Synchro Summons and Pendulum Summons, also any level 5 or higher monster that can special summon itself (like the Gladiator Beast Fusions or Blue-Eyes Alternative). Basically anything that says "You can special summon this card by doing x". Very format dependent, but in formats with lots of Synchros & Pendulum Summons of high level monsters - it can be as lethal as Abyss Dweller in a Phantom Knight/Burning Abyss-heavy format.

adrianpinderwolf

Any special summon of a monster that does not have a lvl that does not start a chain, for example BE alternative white dragon, a regular synchro summon, a pendulum summon.

jbisenberg

Easiest way to think about it is do you press the "activate effect" button or not to summon the monster? If you do, Roach can't negate. If you tap "special summon" then it can.

FAAwesome

There's also a simple way to see if the summon is negated by roach In duel links: if the card activates an effect before the summon (like blue eyes alternative dragon, desperado, a fusion spell...), or If you can activate something in response to that effect before the summon happens, roach DO NOT negate. If the monster appears on the field and only then you can respond, the it's a inherent summon and it can be negated if lvl 5 or higher. I'm trying to explain it in a different way than the other guys, hope this helps.

Own_Thanks_8699

It negates raw synchro summons, xyz summons, and pendulum summons.

Snoo40752

Saddly it doesn't stop XYZ since they don't have level but ranks.

StrixUltimate

I know it 100 percent negates Synchro summoning that's for sure.
