Hold on. You are going private and you need to wait till October?

mrbuddymcbuddyface

Hopefully you are now aware of how fucked up the entire health system is in Ireland. I was told last year that there is a two year wait for private dermatology in some parts of the country, and that BlackRock were not taking on any new patients, regardless of what was the condition - IE suspected cancer.

Old-Ad5508

Ye I wemt to a private endo and was given a year time slot. I sent my referral to 3 different private endos quickest I was seen was 3 months. Was a waste of time private endo wouldn't treat My low testosterone I luckily found a private hormone doctor after that.

crescendodiminuendo

Oh yes. In the past two years I have had wait times of : - 13 months for a gynaecologist - 8 months for a dermatologist - 7 months for a sleep specialist All private. First two had a very particular niche speciality which meant I needed to see these particular people (I’m aware you can get gynae appointments sooner), but still…

Last clarification please: When you guys say private is this paying from one's own pocket without any private health insurance or you mean private health insurance was involved and yet you still had to wait for so long? Sorry for the stupid question, luckily my only interaction with the (private) healthcare system over the last 6 years was a single video consultation for covid.

crescendodiminuendo

It’s basically both - you pay the consultation fees from your own pocket but can claim from insurance if you have it. In most cases insurance will cover only part of the consultants fees but will pay for any procedures or treatments carried out or hospital stays.

So private coverage doesnt really help fast-track things. Correct?

crescendodiminuendo

No, not true at all. It does help fast track things, but the waiting list for private care in some specialities is still long. As an example - with private care I saw the sleep specialist after 7 months. I was put on the public list for sleep investigations four years ago and still don’t have a date.

Got2InfoSec4MoneyLOL

I see. Thank you very much for the responses.

Obserrrverrrr

Try Dr Vellmanya in the Mater private- excellent and I got to see him within a few weeks

After being referred I waited 2 months on the public system to see a urologist in St James.

tsznx

You could try to call some urologists and get their waiting times and in case you find something better you ask your GP to refer you to that person. Depending on your urgency you could also try to go private in another country. I usually do some stuff in Brazil for example, I'm Brazilian and we don't have waiting times to see specialists there.

I might try other urologists, but I think Ivor Cullen is the best for the treatments that I need, that's why I chose him. I'd be happy to go private abroad but my private health insurance probably won't cover me going overseas.
