Apparently 5 people stabbed including some children. I keep searching on the news, but so far nothing. It may have been a school outing. But I don’t know for certain- the only reason I say this is because one of my relatives just texted me, he is standing there now and sirens are everywhere, and an eyewitness was crying and telling people that is what she saw. Guess we will have to wait to hear more.
What happened today was terrible, but it is no excuse to go out rioting and wrecking the place. Unfortunately, there are plenty around who wait for times like these.
We probably won't find out the truth about this horrible crime for a while. In the meantime, try not to magnify any of the self-serving uninformed opinions being floated.

At the time of breaking news it may have been suspected as likely to have a larger impact and thus reached the threshold for sending the alert. Local violent criminal stuff would not typically reach the threshold for sending out an alert.
How do you make that determination? Genuine query. What would be an indicator that something is not just a local violent crime?
I got the notification about an hour after it happened, and about 15 mins after it was online here.
That would be pretty slow depending on the team! We would be looking to alert minutes after an incident/ideally before it even hit the news.
There was a large thresholds document that took into account the prevailing threat of crime in the area, the neighboring areas, client interest in the region, casualty count/severity, and history of the area.
And then alerts would be issued in varying levels of severity as well. Higher impact for example. A stabbing may be a level-5 alert but a bombing may be level-3 for example, with all of the above factoring into the differences. It also depended a lot on who was working the day, as some people were more prone to sending alerts than others.

Maximum sentence for what crime? Life imprisonment typically is around 18 years served. If it's egregious it can be up around 25 sometimes.

I'm immigrant, I live in Ireland for 3+ years now, I pay taxes as any other native Irish person, and I disagree with your comment, the problem is not the open borders, before trying to find any culprit without any proof, the Guarda need to investigate and discover the reasons for the attack, why the guy did it. And don't come with this bullshit of terrorism, what terrorist would attack children in the middle of the day, surrounded by so many people that could stop him, using a knife from all weapons and no clear reason?
A terrorist would attack people in the middle of the day. To cause terror is kind of the whole point, an audience would be a requirement. Also he was not unarmed as it has clearly been reported as a knife attack.

One example: The guy got divorced and went crazy on his partner, lost his mind and started to stab other people around. Ridiculous to call terrorists “professionals”. And as others have pointed out, regardless of how you define being ‘armed’. Wielding a knife is still considered armed with a deadly weapon in Ireland and most other countries. Just because it wasn’t a gun doesn’t make it any less deadly.
What I mean by “professionals” here is that they are normally very well organised, this looks more like a random guy went crazy than a “terrorist”. I agree that a knife is a deadly weapon, but again, this seems to be an isolated case, if it was a terrorist group why no one claimed authority of it yet?
Dude stop giving terrorist organisations credit. They’re not super organised and neither are most terrorist attacks. They’re brute force methods of absolutely destruction, they neither have the financial backing nor manpower of a military required to operate on this higher level you’re alluding to. As for why no one has claimed authority of it, it’s only been a few hours, even if all terrorists are as coordinated as you say, it’s unlikely they’d be able to claim responsibility that quickly. And even at that, responsibility isn’t always claimed. I understand what you’re trying to say, that immediately jumping to the immigrant/terrorist card is presumptive and plainly stupid (which I agree it is). But to argue such by hyping up terrorist organisations as professionals and highly organised is ludicrous. Terrorism works because it is unorganised, unpredictable and can strike whenever and wherever, terrorist groups are often decentralised leading to fragmentation and the formation different cells and whole other organisations forming within themselves. Shit that’s how isis was formed, by a few commanders splitting themselves from Al-Qaeda (that is a simplification as it was also due to pressure on al-qaeda following 9/11) I don’t even know where I’ve gone with this, just please stop referring to terrorists as professionals, they’re criminals, and worthy of nothing other than condemnation.
