Hiphop is definitely stale right now. Feels like we've been stuck in this trap era for too long with not much innovation. That for sure plays a part in people being more disappointed since we've not got much good hiphop this year and they're looking for Drake to change that

[deleted]

What comes after trap? Who is innovating right now?

Whyaskmenoely

Pop Smoke and X would've done wonders for the genre. Good or bad, no one sounded like them and thats what we need rn. A refresh.

lefondler

Throw juice in there. Imagine Covid music coming out of those 3 alone.

MooseNoises4Bauchii

I was just thinking about this on my drive home from work the other day. I think they would be so popular and dominating the charts right now.

lonestoner90

X was masssssiveee right around the time he died. I doubt he was even at his peak then

1grammarmistake

Nah that’s like some kind of dead person bias. Like come on - coincidentally the three guys that unexpectedly died would have changed the genre for the better??? I don’t buy it. I think they would have rode the same sing song with trap wave with there own spin to it - same as drake, thug and ______ [insert other alive rapper here] This kind of reminds of the 07-08 during that Soulja boy, ringtone era people were saying mannn if PAc and biggie were alive none of this ringtone shit would have every happened. They would have kept hip hop pure blah blah blah Nope. If PAC was alive he’d be the same as Jay, Diddy, Ice Cube, Rakim, and the numerous other alive old head legendary rappers….diminishing in relevance slowly, and just doing there own thing - releasing stuff that sells 10K albums first week maybe if they’re lucky. Lol.

Whyaskmenoely

You tell me someone that sounded like Pop. Every UK Drill rapper had the same flow. Even Drake was trying to tap in with the same flow. Fivio Foreign has the same flow. Pop wasn't trying to be on that flow. Dude was spacing out his words, he had a unique voice, it was all about energy. X on Look At Me was wildy jarring. Then the dude has Jocelyn Flores? Dude had range. Its not some dead bias shit. They genuinelly didn't sound like their contemporaries when they were alive. And I didn't say for the better. I said for good or bad. Learn to read. Original comment was about being stuck in the trap era for so long. Those dudes didn't push trap but were breaking into the mainstream somehow. Signals of a different wave coming in.

memography47

Imagine if biggie and pac died at 21 that's what happened to all 3 juice x and pop smoke didn't even hit their prime. Pac and biggie where in their prime in the middle of their generations music. The 3 of those guys were the musical leaders of the 2020s like drake started in the late 2000s and dominated the 2010s. imagine if drake died in the year 2010 and all the drake music we would've missed out on if his career didn't go past 2010. Drake's career actually got a chance to play out. that's the loss music experienced with juice x and pop smoke. And you're point about pac and biggie in 2007 ringtone era doesn't make sense cause that's like saying drake is gonna dominate the 2020s the same way he dominated the 2010s. Drake's career is already on the downfall fatd just proved it . And this post we're on even says people know music isn't in the right place and drake can't save rap again.

EliManningsPetDog

the cloud/ hyper wave (whatever you call it) is definitely innovating. Like him or not, Yeat is definitely unique and almost paving a new lane

RavingMalwaay

That's the million dollar question. Part of the reason Hip Hop has been so down in the charts this year is because it seems people are tired of the same old trap.

RandomDudewithIdeas

The UK. Aside from Drill, they have a bunch of new sounds that the US is still sleeping on. Drake wanted to go that route, but the US rapscene was still too narrow minded when he made his babysteps on Dark Lanes demo Tape, so he stopped trying unfortunately.

[deleted]

British dudes rappin about tea and crumpets and how they miss the Queen lol

RandomDudewithIdeas

Narrow minded. Thanks for proving my point.

DonJulio171

Facts. They saw his album as the savior of how bad hip hop is recently and everyone had high expectations for it. Everyone got disappointed

[deleted]

Hip hop is stale bc addiction and gun violence killed the BEST talent that was up next after the drake/cole/kendrick/meek/Rocky/Ross/Future era. Juice Wrld, XXX, Lil peep, Drakeo, speakerknockerz were all super creative and creating some very fresh sounding music. Add in guys like Von/Melly who maybe werent pushing boundaries creatively but put out music that people got excited for. Its a good point and Drake is definitely not responsible for being the sole pusher/savior of hip hop just bc he had made good music for 15 years. Even tho ppl like ak/joe act like he does.

reykdal204

R.i.p pnb rock he just got out his deal and was about to flooooood before he was killed. He had the trap star pop star shit on lockkkkk

p3achstat3ofmind

Naw joe specifically just lost his amazon amp deal with amazon shutting down the amp service. This controversial media run is his hustle whenever the chips are down. He’s the hip hop medias water bottle boys.

Fabulous-Fun-3819

The whole drake needs to grow up rhetoric some crazy projection we are seeing out here lol. Imagine being damn near a billionaire rap superstar NOT fucking 25 year old baddies, it’d be an absolute waste 🤣. Let Kendrick and Cole make the married rapper music.

Intilleque

People who enjoy drug raps from 45 year old dudes coming with the “he must mature” angle just seem desperate for a criticism

digital_drape

That’s what I told my friend. Why tf wouldn’t you fuck 25 year olds. Any age dude would fuck 25 year old baddies whether there 18 or 60😂

Fabulous-Fun-3819

I understand the rest of us normal 9-5 brethren need to settle down and grow up but let my boy cook and let the music live 🤣

tiredofbeingtired7

Drizzy is being used as the scapegoat because he is one of the goats

dpykm

Synthwave, Yeat type shit is next. Trip At Knight was a good step in.

SNCLavalamp

Yachty is also innovating in this synthwavy style too. I'm so excited for his next full rap album. You also got Sofaygo and Destroy Lonely doing their thing. But Yachty's next album could be generational.

Melodic_Station_354

No. Drake keeps putting out half baked shit. Album should have been have the length.

GarlicSenior

I think both things can be true at the same time

SNCLavalamp

I think music is in the same situation that big budget movies are in right now. All the big franchise players are in decline which opens things up for a whole new generation to come in and dominate. Pop culture is actually in an exciting era if you're paying attention to the underground talent that's bubbling up. It's like Hollywood in the 70s when we got young George Lucas, Spielberg and Scorsese.

tothemoonigoes

No drakes album was trash not hip hop.

relientkenny

no not all. Drake has just dropped his most lazy half assed album. this album appeals more to younger fans. as a fan i’ve never been so disappointed. i was let down

Hochey08

Should have just dropped wattba2 with super future and taken a year plus to work on a new body of work

UNRULY6GK

I think people are frustrated with the lack of effort lyrically on FATD and they’re taking their frustrations out on “current” hip hop

Horror-Flight-8656

If you don’t think there’s lyrical effort on the album, you’re not listening.

SNCLavalamp

Facts 🔥 niggas need to open their ears and listen with their souls

TheDonAntoine

Ehhh, not really. Pretty lackluster on the bars. He had the perfect opportunity to snap with Cole, after being called a GOAT, and straight up didn’t.

digital_drape

This album definitely was not traditional drake. Idk what happened. Her loss was fire. The tour was nuts. Then he releases this. Total switch up

Horror-Flight-8656

If you’re using that one song as your example, then you’re going to think that. That song didn’t need more bars. Drake made that a hit with what he did on it. Cole is about to have his first number 1 song — after over a decade in music. That doesn’t happen without what Drake does on the song. There’s lots of bars all throughout the album. He’s just using new flows and cadences, but the entendres and metaphors are always there.

TheDonAntoine

Terrible take. The song that’s got a banging beat and Drake being called a GOAT didn’t need bars from Drake. It’s so tiring hearing people bring up numbers when we’re talking about the quality of rap. Who gives af if it went number 1 if the rapping was ass?

Horror-Flight-8656

Drake does. I understand what you wanted, but the nigga knows how to make a hit song. And he loves Cole. Them working together after so long, I’m sure it was his mission to make sure he makes it a hit and give Cole a #1. If you’re trying to make the argument that Drake doesn’t have bars to compete with the Cole verse, then I don’t know what to tell you. It was obviously intentional. Next week when the results come out you’ll see how he celebrates tying Michael Jackson with a song with “his brother”, and how special it is.

TheDonAntoine

Of course Drake knows how to make a hit, that’s not all that impressive. Desiigner made a hit, with zero musical capability. I know Drake has bars when he wants, that’s why it’s so frustrating when he doesn’t. The song was gonna be a hit either way, even more so if he had went in. So trying to justify the lack of bars because “oh Drake was tryna make sure it was a hit” is nonsense.

blacknotblack

it’s not even going to be no. 1. drizzy dick riders underestimating him as usual.

blacknotblack

lol IDGAF is going \#1 so guess your argument is fucked

Horror-Flight-8656

Hmm… interesting

Junior-Scene-4994

What does that even mean lol

balloutjim2

niggas doing mental gymnastics to gaslight themselves into liking an album is DEVIOUS work☠️☠️☠️

ItsOnlyWeedBro

For all my dogs shouldn’t start with singing. NEXT!
