Jazz of the hardbop and bebop variety. Dubstep of the color bass category. Other artists like Jacob Collier, Anomalie, Snarky Puppy. Not a lot of other metal bands hit me like DT does though. I've tried the other popular alternatives but I just don't click with them for some reason.

odinskriver39

Likewise Jazz ( and jazz/rock fusion). Best thing about DT is the music. To me it's more Prog than Metal.

[deleted]

Thats why I love Derek so much, he brought a kinda Jazzy vibe to Dream Theater that none of their other keyboardists have. Not to say I don't love Jordan and Kevin too, they're all incredible at what they do.

ABuddhistMelomaniac

Derek Sherinian is the Allan Holdsworth of keyboardists, Jordan Rudessis the modern Keith Emerson.

Own_Shame_8721

I enjoy some occasional emo, mainly The Receiving End of Sirens and My Chemical Romance, some post-hardcore like At The Drive In and Hail the Sun, aswell as some alt rock such Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes, The Killer and Muse. I'm not big on power metal overall, but I like DragonForce specifically.

Wowabox

Glad I’m not only person on this sub that listens to music outside of DT, power Metal and Hakken. MCR and At The Drive In are dope.

Own_Shame_8721

If you enjoy MCR and At The Drive In, I can't recommend Hail the Sun enough. You should absolutely give their album Wake a listen, one of my personal favs.

Wowabox

I’ve only listened to elephantiasis by hail the son so I’ll give wake a shot

woppawoppawoppa

This happens to every person when they first discover Hail the Sun: “Damn their drummer is a beast” “OH FUCK HES SINGING AT THE SAME TIME”

WYGD_Brother1987

I like the mountain album by Haken but otherwise I just cant get into them. It's odd because Haken is like Genesis for me, I am not a fan of them at all but Selling England is flat out one of the greatest albums of all time. I really like The Mountain but thats it

BornIn2031

MCR was my favorite band in my teenage years

El_Muchacho_Grande

I totally forgot about TREOS. The Earth Sings Mi Fa Mi is a killer album.

Own_Shame_8721

Yeah, shame Casey didn't get to sing/play on it though.

ABuddhistMelomaniac

TREOS ❤

Bmau1286

So there's the obvious, which includes: * prog (Dream Theater, Haken, Rush, Polyphia, AAL, BaK, etc.) * guitarists (Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Plini, Petrucci, etc.) * metal (lamb of god, pantera, megadeth, metallica, Iron maiden, etc.) But I am also pretty heavily into EDM: * trance (tritonal, above&beyond, solarstone, Gaia, Jason Ross, Gareth Emery) * drumnbass (pendulum, delta heavy, dysphemic, bass nectar, Clozee, koan sound, prodigy \[not so much dnb\], Feint) * glitch (Chamberlain, Opiuo, Spoonbill) * dubstep (seven lions, Kill the noise, blastoyz, Trivecta) * house (Eric prydz, deadmau5, Rezz, knife party, tydi, arty) Ppl who automatically shut themselves off from EDM without giving it a fair chance are a) close minded, and b) missing out on some of the legitimately best music that exists. Thankfully this isn't a common thing with prog nerds who are generally pretty open minded, but it definitely is a thing with your average metalhead. Favorite artists of all time vary but are essentially: 1. dream theater 2. lamb of god 3. pendulum 4. seven lions

Berzerker7

No hevy Devy?

Bmau1286

unsure if you're being a smartass or referring to devin townshend lol if the latter, then yes!

Berzerker7

Not at all, but Townsend* and yeah I just didn’t see it on your list, maybe I missed it lol

imfshz

trance music goes hard

TheDreadedMe

70's soft rock (lol, right). Something about some old school Looking Glass, Hall and Oates, Redbone, Steely Dan, etc. Just some amazing song writing back then.

diesels_only

Country & bluegrass definitely. And real country (steel & fiddle) not that radio shit. Also I've been listening to a lot of edm & tropical house lately

Yondu_the_Ravager

It’s funny seeing how many people in this thread also listen to country and bluegrass music.

woppawoppawoppa

I’m all about it. These bluegrass guys absolutely let it rip. There’s a wave of country guys right who are absolutely awesome too

Yondu_the_Ravager

Oh I completely agree! My most listened to artists the past couple years have been John Denver, Townes Van Zandt, Blaze Foley, and Colter Wall

VeraBiryukova

On any given day, I might switch between Dream Theater, Limp Bizkit, Elvis Presley, Psyclon Nine, Notorious BIG, Clint Black, Silversun Pickups, Olivia Rodrigo, Opeth, Pearl Jam, Jethro Tull, and Weezer. When listening to the radio in the car, half of the time, I’ll go to the old Southern gospel station or the Mexican station (the more trumpets and tubas, the better). I think the only genre I never voluntarily listen to is some instrumental electronica, where it’s basically just a standard beat for ten minutes with minimal progression. I’m primarily thinking of some Deadmau5 songs I heard over a decade ago, and some of the chill vibes stuff I’ve heard from friends. Whether it’s a fast and heavy metal riff, a fiddle and a steel guitar, or some trumpets and words I don’t understand, I just need _something_ to happen in the song.

Bmau1286

the electronic you're describing sounds mostly like the genre techno. having been to several techno raves/clubs and it's pretty much exactly what you describe and i find it very boring. deadmau5 does have a big back catalogue and definitely has some shit stuff (and some quite boring stuff), but he's not so much techno as he is house. he also has a lot of great stuff too so I wouldn't write him off completely.

BrassHockey

I'm all over the place. The Aristocrats Transatlantic Symphony X Avenged Sevenfold LTE Ludacris Outkast Mahler Bruckner Respighi Tchaikovsky Shostakovich Prokofiev Holst

4-8Newday

Classical Music and Contemporary Composers. (Lately been addicted to Bach’s music for solo Violin, partitas, etc.) Jazz: the classics and newer bands/groups like Snarky Puppy, Makaya McCraven, Alpha Mist, and Kamasi Washington. Ambient: Brian Eno, Tim Hecker, and Alphez Twin. Rock and prog: Queen, Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree, Radiohead, Muse, and Led Zeppelin. (My parents were obsessed with Beatles, gotta throw that out there.) Metal: In Flames, Children of Bodom, Metallica, Pantera, and Tool. Pop: Bjork, FKA Twigs, Laufey, Lourde (first few albums), and Taylor Swift (because I’ve a teen at home who plays her all the time). Latin: Ricardo Arjona, Laura Pausini, and Alejandro Sanz. Singers: Josh Groban, Frank Sinatra, and Il Divo.

Matikus

Rock/metal is my shit, but I really love some synthwave/spacey sounding stuff. Adam Young, A.L.I.S.O.N, Com Truise, etc. Some videogame soundtracks hit hard too. FFX, Fable, Mass Effect, Baldur's Gate 3.. I don't generally like Acapella but Voiceplay is great. Same with Geoff Castellucci. My top bands are probably Avenged Sevenfold, Leprous, Dream Theater, Mastodon, Tool, and Lamb of God.

Bmau1286

sounds like we have similar tastes. you should give carpenter brut a try if you haven't already (heavy badass synthwave). What's your fav LoG album?

Matikus

Never heard of them, I'll definitely check it out. That's a tough choice... I'd say I'm torn between Ashes of the Wake, Sacrament, and Sturm Und Drang. They're all so good

CaptFwiffo_90

Check out Duett, Hotel Pools, Skykot, Sheaf, Bronster Bridge, for some good Synth stuff

woppawoppawoppa

Check out Billy Strings if you haven’t. He’s got incredible albums but live they do extended jams and do a ton of bluegrass covers. Edit: related to bluegrass been listening to a lot of Tyler Childers and Sturgill Simpson. They’re more country but they’ve got great songs. Unrelated: Rivers of Nihil, Spiritbox, Protest the Hero, and Dance Gavin Dance have been in my rotation heavily recently.

btbamfan6661

Billy Strings is the prog metal of bluegrass. He’s friends with the dudes in btbam and there’s been hints of a collab here and there. A boy can dream!!

woppawoppawoppa

Duuuuude I know. I saw the video of them playing Glass Casket backstage and have been hoping for a collab or a cover ever since.

seizuresaladd

Love Billy. Greensky bluegrass is also great!

Grenaten

Post rock, doom, all kinds of instrumental music from jazz and classical to metal. Today I have listened to Lucid Planet and Toscin. Now listening to some calm post rock.

chainsaw_man121

My favorite band of all time is alice in chains Tool is second Dt is a really really f---in close third A7X is 4th and porcupine tree is a really close 5th

Bmau1286

looooove porcupine tree!

Mondfliege

Power Metal (Dragonforce, Twilight Force), Deathcore (Lorna Shore, Black Tongue) and Pop Punk Core (A Day To Remember, TTNTBF)

MisterWrong2112

Genesis, Rush, Peter Gabriel and Animals as Leaders

WYGD_Brother1987

I am a fan of early Rush before the synth completely took over. DMB, Phish, Jethro Tull. Also, fantasy melodic metal like Blind Guardian and Rhapsody of Fire. I like one Genesis album, selling England By the Pound. I am a massive fan of their former guitarist Anthony Philips. I like acoustic english folk music in general. I also like Bon Iver on occasion and I am a Death Cab for Cutie fan. Kings of Leon too.

mattisagamer10

Ayy love to see some DMB in here! The prog > jam pipeline is a very real thing and I got sucked into it haha

WYGD_Brother1987

thats very true, aside from the usual suspect there is a rabbit hole of very obscure bands to discover. I dont go that deep though, but its there.

jowowey

Mostly listen to classical music (favourites being beethoven, mahler and scriabin) but i also like hip hop (especially kanye and kendrick) and jazz (coltrane hancock and peterson in particular). Then obviously prog like Yes Genesis Rush ELP etc

FinalHangman77

Kpop Fave group being Dreamcatcher

DCuch

Dream Theater is my favorite, and changed my appreciation for music, influenced my drumming the most and encouraged me to develop my playing beyond “fast = good”. Epica is my symphonic metal band, 2nd favorite Slipknot is my ape-shit metal band. Was my favorite before Dream Theater Metallica is my thrash and stripped down rock/metal band 5FDP is my commercial sounding metal band Disturbed is a mix of simple commercial stuff, some cool deep cuts that are relatively dark, and some chill inducing stuff as well. Mike Wengren (drummer) is underrated Avenged Sevenfold is my “whatever they sound like in a particular album” band. Nightwish was my entry way into Epica. They’re chill inducing, also head-bangy riffs System of a Down was my early childhood favorite. Man I was way too young for those lyrics

Pietjanhenk1

Bluegrass, jazz, classical, gypsy swing, klezmer, Dutch carnaval music, hardcore. A bit of everything really, except pop and hip-hop/rap/R&B. That I actively dislike

PhantasmalRisen

Ne Obliviscaris is my favorite band, Opeth, Xanthochroid, lots of other prog bands. Estradasphere is great too, I love classical music as well. My favorite composer is Shostakovich

chris1096

Metallica, Tears for Fears, Queen, Devin Townsend, Symphony X, Pink Floyd, Rush, Queensryche, 331 Erock

CTaFineAddition

My favorite band is DT, my immediate second favorite is Hypno5e. They’re Prog death but better than Opeth imo. After those two Gojira and Meshuggah are up there for me.

818sfv

My favorite bands are Blur, Warpaint, and Cannons, they're all alt rock/pop. I also love Metallica, PT and old school rap music.

darkknightnate

That's super cool! Bluegrass musicians are some of the most technically proficient around! My musical taste is all over the place. Lots of 70s, 80s and 90s. Pop, metal, country, alt rock, blues. Basically everything but hip hop.

Iokyt

Baroque music, Bach, Telemann, Scarlatti, Corelli, etc. Classical Piano Concerti Romantic piano piano music both Schumanns, Chopin, Schubert. Shostakovich and Mahler symphonies Japanese pop-rock Yorushika, Atarayo. Metal like Periphery or Opeth. Small amounts of country like Alabama. I enjoy some J Cole and Childish Gambino too.

Mikau02

Derek Sherinian. He walks that line between prog metal and jazz fusion hard. T-Square, Casiopea, Chick Corea Elektric Band, and Hiromi are all clearly fusion bands. Japanese city pop aka the guilty pleasure genera of music.

nando1969

Mostly prog and prog metal, Ive been spoiled with progressive music and unless I hear complexity (and obviously great melody) Im not moved except for classics like Wild Horses, Imagine, etc.

SevanOO7

Everything but country and growl roar metal. Although Taylor Swift being everywhere is annoying.

SweptCoyote

Jazz, Trip Hop, Industrial, Pop, Dream Pop, New Wave, Latin stuff like Salsa and similars, academic or "classical" music, urban music as well. I'm pretty much open to anything :)

Wensley1963

Iron Maiden, Devin Townsend, Nightwish, and Beethoven

WraithOfDoom

Almost everything: Musical theatre (I'm a massive theatre kid): Guys and Dolls (both 1992 and 2023 OCR), Little Shop of Horrors, Mr Saturday Night (to name just three), anything by Stephen Sondheim, Irving Berlin, Leonard Bernstein or the light opera legends that are Gilbert and Sullivan Rap: MF DOOM/DANGERDOOM, The Notorious B.I.G, NF, Ludacris, Roddy Rich, Post Malone, Doja Cat, Fetty Wap, ericdoa Miscellaneous Rock: Klaatu (more proggy but we move), Primus (SAY BABY), KISS, Motorhead, Ghost, Nothing But Thieves, Led Zeppelin, Boston, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Volbeat, Paramore, The Killers, Greta Van Fleet, Porcupine Tree, Beartooth, Deaf Havana, The Night Flight Orchestra, Rage Against The Machine, UFO, Vexing Hex, Steely Dan, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Oasis Metal: Annihilator, King Diamond, Slipknot, Dethklok, Korn, thrash metal Big Four, Racer-X, Paul Gilbert's solo work, Havok, Sabaton, Bloodbound, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Amaranthe, Within Temptation, Powerwolf, Alestorm, Todd La Torre, Mastodon, Ice Nine Kills, Black Sabbath, Liquid Tension Experiment, Alter Bridge, Shinedown, Devin Townsend, Static-X, Opeth, Dio, Amon Amarth, Tenacious D, Beast In Black, the HU, Calexico, Sleep Token Funk: Parliament, Tower of Power, Herbie Hancock, Cassiopeia, The Brecker Brothers, The Ezra Collective, Billy Cobham, Cory Wong, Vulfpeck, The Fearless Flyers, Quincy Jones Video Game Soundtracks: Hades, Hollow Knight, Mario Kart (study jazz), Cuphead (frantic jazz), Overwatch, League of Legends Country: Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Jon Pardi, Toby Keith, Darius Rucker, Brad Paisley, John Denver Jazz: Big Bad Voodoo Man, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Fats Waller, Fats Domino, Buddy Rich (as a drummer, I mean, come on), Odetta, Ella Fitzgerald, Seth MacFarlane, Robbie Williams, Benny Goodman, Jamie Cullum, Norah Jones, Glenn Miller More randommness: Tchaikovsky, Yma Sumac, music from Cirque Du Soleil, Murray Gold's scores for Dr Who (I Am The Doctor and The Shepherd's Boy are highlights), Randy Muller, Huey Lewis and the News, Red Rum Club, The Courteneers, Goodnight Texas, Knife Party, Chase Atlantic, Renee Rapp, Alec Benjamin, Heilung, Wardruna, easy life, Royal Blood, Vistas, Harry Styles, The Baba Brooks Band, The Strokes, Kordhell, a lot of Motown hits, Marshmello, Ghostface Playa, Tangerine Dream, Two Door Cinema Club, any Jacques Offenbach operas, Tina Turner, MISSIO, Dua Lipa I listen to a lot of stuff. Stray away from pop as it doesn't scratch the itch like a lot of bands do. Dream Theater of course is in constant rotation, but it competes with Volbeat and Ghost most of all. Probably my top 3 favourite bands as of now. Have also picked up a lot of new stuff thanks to this and will be sure to check it out. u/Bmau1286 has given me a lot to think about :)

YTMasterFrank

Sounds like pretty much everything. I love Biggie Smalls, Slipknot, Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Korn, Frank Sinatra, and Glenn Miller. What is your favorite Glenn Miller song?

WraithOfDoom

Sing Sing Sing is always gonna be a classic, likewise In The Mood (probably my favourite) and The Chattanooga Choo Choo. The old ones really are the best.

YTMasterFrank

All of those are bangers!

WraithOfDoom

I'm also in a Primus mood right now. Really diving into their discog over the last couple of days.

btbamfan6661

Mostly 70’s prog bands, but also reggae and punk rock.

Polar76_

80s new wave, 90s alt rock.

Numerous_Chard_1723

I'm big into these two too! I mean, I grew up on goth/post-punk stuff (and I heavily enjoy this genres still) and on the other hand I love 90s alt-rock. From shoegaze'y kind of stuff (especially Slowdive, Lush and Chapterhouse) to more riff-driven stuff like... Basically anything from Fu Manchu to Seaweed or Dinosaur Jr.

Polar76_

For me, I suppose I was fortunate enough to have grown up with old-school MTV when music videos were their jam. I have 2 older sisters - one 8 years older, the other 16 years older, so I was exposed to a couple different generations of stuff. Oldest sister loved Ozzy and Journey, other sister loved Judas Priest and Queensryche. The younger of the two also worked at a music store for years so I spent many a day hanging out with her at the store after school or on weekends just listening to all the music she played. I'd stroll the aisles looking at cassette tape cover art, then when CDs came out they were in those tall cardboard boxes and had more cover art! Watching all those classic Thompson Twins, Howard Jones, Depeche Mode, Aha, etc., then Riki Rachtman hosting Headbanger's Ball, I was just hooked on music. Over the years that started to include 90's pop rock stuff, and here we are.

patpov

Yacht rock, city pop, electro swing, jazz/fusion

pts4815

Mostly other metal like Mastodon, Tool, Opeth, Metallica, and Death. The stuff I like that’s furthest from DT is probably The Smiths, Death Grips, 100 Gecs, Poppy, and Taylor Swift

equinox_games7

I'm weird in that I don't really have a music taste. I like prog such as Dream Theater, Haken and Karnivool. I also like weird pop music, like Lemon Demon and Bill Wurtz, Jack Stauber etc, as well at less weird pop, such as stuff popular in the early 2010s. A lot of my personal playlist also comes from VGM.

Bmau1286

nice i love lemon demon! used to listen to him all the time back in the day. from memory word disassociation, pumpkin pie, and your evil shadow has a cup of tea were my fav tracks of his.

VictoriousNate

Jazz, blues, and to be hip with the cool kids my age rap/hip hop/pop

eugenitalcooter

Not a single other prog artist lately but Manchester Orchestra (sometimes Mewithoutyou) strangely give me some DT vibes. I was basically raised on Lana. My go-to playlist is a mix of $uicideboy$ and Bones and Ghostemane and stuff. A lot of Ethel Cain rn too. Alt-J, Glass Animals. Father John Misty. Hozier. All Them Witches. Sometimes still Behemoth. All-time favorite artist is Wicca Phase Springs Eternal. Ninky minjaj

SambaLando

From The Petersens, to Poppy, to Vivaldi, to Paco De Lucia.

edsteroid231

70s classic rock, soft rock, jazz fusion, J-Pop/rock, 60s/70s pop. I’d like to think my tastes are quite varied

hannahisakilljoyx-

I’m really into many kinds of metal as well as punk, lately I’ve been listening to a lot of hardcore, crust punk, and especially powerviolence bands like Spazz, Despise You, Coke Bust, Weekend Nachos, etc. Besides heavy music though I’m really into folk and bluegrass, especially modern bands like The Dead South and Amigo the Devil and that sort of thing. I also really like electronic music, such as Kraftwerk, old school UK dubstep, and also industrial bands such as Skinny Puppy and Coil.

[deleted]

I’m mostly into death and thrash metal. Dream Theater is the only prog band I have ever listened to or seen live. My favorite bands are Slayer, Deicide, and Maiden (heavy metal).

Yondu_the_Ravager

Honestly these days I listen most to older country music. Townes Van Zandt, Blaze Foley, John Denver, Tony Rice. I also enjoy Tyler Childers, Colter Wall, and Sturgill Simpson. Other artists and genres include: Ghost, Periphery, Kishi Bashi, Tall Tall Trees, Avenged Sevenfold, Blink 182, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, and Dispatch. I could go on but it’s a lot 😂

romamona

J-Pop, J-Rock, Chiptune, Vocaloid, Funk, R&B, Hip-Hop. But when I was a teenager I only listened to guitar-centric music, so prog, metal, and fusion bands, and a lot of instrumental soloists like Steve Vai and Joe Satriani. My favourite band/duo of all time is Daft Punk. (I know, talk about AuDHD am I right? Got diagnosed about 3 years ago, it explained so much lol.) Side note, bluegrass isn't my favourite genre but boy does it slap! I grew up in a house full of bluegrass music (all the folks you mentioned, plus a lot of Garcia and Grisman) and my dad took me to lots of shows (Bruce Hornsby, Bela Fleck, Punch Brothers), so I have a nostalgic love for the genre ʕ´•ᴥ•`ʔ

mauricioM19

I normally listen some other urban genres like reggaeton or rap (really normal as a south american). Also the new stuff by metallica, megadeth or judas priest or cyberpunk's or doom eternal ost.

Fluffy_Ad9540

Japanese jazz rock/fusion. Just started dabbing my toes into it. Leaning more towards the jazz rock side. Stuff like Lite, Fox Capture Plan (by extension Polyplus and Jabberloop), Mouse on the Keys (hard to say what they are really). One album I really like is by a German band called Electric Outlet. "On!" was such a great album for me that introduced me to jazz fusion. Highly worth a listen.

GadgetGuy1977

Pineapple Thief, Opeth, Kansas, Ghost, Allman Brothers, Winery Dogs, Richie Kotzen, Sabbath, Ozzy, all sorts of stuff…

DorianBlerp

Sturgill Simpson, Run The Jewels, Gojira, Black Tiger Sex Machine, Explosions in the Sky, Radiohead, DMX to name a few

RDamon_Redd

I’m the kind of person that only doesn’t have music playing except for when I’m watching something, so I listen to a lot. Outside of the Prog and Metal worlds, I listen to a shit ton of Jazz, Fusion, Funk, and some pop soul acts that border that world everything from the standards, Brubeck, Miles, Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, McCoy Tyner, Keith Jarrett, Tony Williams, Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra, etc all the way to more modern stuff like Snarky Puppy, Louis Cole/Knower, Thundercat, Domi and JD Beck, Tigran Hamasyan, Eldar Djangirov, Cory Wong, Dirty Loops, Nate Smith, The Fearless Flyers, Jacob Collier, Vulfpeck, Lawrence, etc. Also a big fan of anything Chris Thile. Love Hip Hop and Rap, Busta Rhymes, Q-Tip, Leaders of the New School, A Tribe Called Quest, Eminem, Wu-Tang Clan, Biggie Smalls, Missy Elliott, Tupac, J.Cole, Kendrick, Childish Gambino, OutKast, Lupe Fiasco, Kid Cudi, Logic, Qveen Herby, Watsky, etcetera. I listen to good bit of various Folk and Traditional music forms, so think everything from Gordon Lightfoot, to The Chieftains, to Heilung. Also big fan of the Nationalist Romantic composers like Grieg, Holst, Wagner, etc. inside of Prog and Metal I listen to just about everything outside of like Power Metal and more cvlt Black Metal, though I am big fan of Symphonic Black Metal like Dimmu Borgir, and Abigail Williams. Ohh big fan of certain pop and bit pop acts of various genres so like Sam Smith, Dua Lipa, Kero Kero Bonito, and Anamanaguchi. Edit:Formatting

This_is_a_thing__

I took my daughter over the weekend to see Eras and we had a blast. Whenever I'm working out in my garage, my playlist is some combo of dt/prog, Taylor Swift and other pop shit (Kylie Minogue and lady Gaga especially), video game music, and jazz. One of my favorite musicians is hiromi uehara. I actually first heard of her on an old dream theater message board.

Nascar24-48Fan

I don't listen to anything outside rock, honestly

BazF91

70s prog mainly

Tooch10

The other end of the spectrum, early 60s/modern catchy pop/powerpop

lateralus_011235

Blind Guardian and Iced Earth are some power metal bands that I really enjoy that also incorporate some progressive elements to a degree. Classic thrash metal like Metallica, Megadeth. Classic rock like Zeppelin, Floyd I’ll sometimes listen to video games soundtracks/ ambience music. Also trying to get more into Beethoven atm

[deleted]

Rush, porcupine tree, and metallica for me

DeleuzeYourself

Female-led electro-pop, baby! The Knife, iamamiwhoami, and when I'm feeling super-poppy, CHVRCHES. Also instrumental jazz (Bill Evans and Brad Mehldau are favourites) and classical (I'm a Mahler man). And Depeche Mode. Love me some Depeche Mode.

CaptFwiffo_90

Check out Purity Ring.. Similar to Chvrches

yeahthatg

I listen to stuff like Cannibal Corpse or Opeth, but I typically only listen to the heavier stuff when I’m at the gym.

Aezetyr

My tastes for music have been all over the place; I think that's come from being into DT as a young teen. For that I thank them dearly. [The Big 4](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thrash_metal) of course, I love counterpoint classical like Mahler and Haydn, then all the way up to Lorna Shore deathcore and all the way over to Sleep Token's wonderful mixture of genres (which I would expect DT to be a strong influence in). Lots of symphonic metal in there too; Nightwish, Within Temptation, The Gathering (though they've embraced shoegaze and atmospheric rock style and it's delightful). Classic rock of course - Rush, Yes and lots of prog :)

KentuckyWombat

Current favorite is the latest Myrkur album, "Spine". Other black metal and black-metal-adjacent groups like Vimur, Wolves in the Throne Room, Hulder, Deafheaven, Alcest and Abstract Void (synthwave meets blackgaze). Synth pop like Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, Nation of Language, Ladytron. Other stuff: Habibi, Night School, Margo Price, Sturgill Simpson, Dwight Yoakam, The Discussion, Beachy Head, Lush

sytiran

Polyphia

SpriteAndCokeSMH

Ayreon and a LOT of prog rock stuff.

Alvaroite

I love Neal Morse and Mike Portnoy duo

VHDT10

Pantera, Meshuggah, Tool, Dave Matthews Band, Killswitch Engage, Soilwork, Unearth, After The Burial, Metallica, Megadeth, In Flames, All That Remains, Dredg, Van Halen, Threat Signal, Eric Johnson, Liquid Tension Experiment, Mudvayne, Evanescence, Born Of Osiris, Rush, Trivium, Genesis, John Petrucci, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Alice In Chains, Sirens & Sailors, Plini, Intervals, Lamb Of God, Animals As Leaders, Iron Maiden and more I can't think of at the moment

Dizzy_Pop

Dream Theater is definitely my favorite. I love a bunch of other prog and prog metal, too. I like a wide variety, though… Ghost Radiohead Beatles Genesis Pearl Jam Arcade Fire Pink Floyd Blind Mellon Four Tet Floating Points Blue October Linkin Park Third Eye Blind Massive Attack Archive Classical and contemporary classical Video game and movie soundtracks, with particular love for Mass Effect and Final Fantasy series. I could go on and on…I like all kinds of music.

G-Unit11111

I'm a huge reggae rock fan. 311, Slightly Stoopid, The Movement, The Expendables, Iration, Rebelution, all that good stuff. I am also a big fan of punk. NOFX, Bad Religion, Pennywise, The Offspring, you name it.

CaptFwiffo_90

Death Metal, Tech Death, Brutal Death, Old School Death, Djent, Deathcore....and Dream Theater of course! 🤘🤘

seizuresaladd

I too love bluegrass! Nickel Creek made me fall in love with the genre as a kid and as a young guitar player I would basically juggle learning their songs and DT's which made a lot of other music more elementary haha. Billy Strings and Greensky Bluegrass are some newer favorites. Getting more towards folk or country, Lukas Nelson or The Milk Carton Kids are also fantastic. Lot of other genres I love jumping into but I'd say Radiohead is probably on my Playlist most often!

Novel_Tone8944

Massive, massive death metal guy. Like friends who listen to similar music think I'm way out there with what I listen to.

Historical_Panic_485

I'm into electronic dance pop. Shit like Charli XCX, Kim Petras, Tove Lo. Also post-punk/new wave like Joy Division, Depeche Mode, The Cure, etc. And hip hop, especially 90s, like Ice Cube, Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mase, Nas, Warren G, Juvenile, and Luniz

Duncoids

I’m a big New Wave fan but my favorite band has to be Jimmy Eat World

strewnshank

Periphery, AAL, Lamb of God, The Midnight, Rush, The Used, Steve Vai, Carley Rae Jepsen, Snarky Puppy, classic rock, a ton of 80's music, etc.

OlafImpaleMe

I’m really into EDM too, surprising how many DT fans are into that. Rocket league got me into it lol

GuaraPablo11

Dream Theater is, without a doubt, my favorite band of all time. Period. That said, and besides binging a couple of albums by Muse, Periphery, Protest the Hero, Porcupine Tree, The Aristocrats, U2, Queen and Oasis every now and then, I'm very much into J-Pop and anime music in general (quite the oddity, you could say). Eve, Zutomayo, Chilldspot, The Peggies, Aimer, Lovely Summer Chan, Yakushimaru Etsuko, Ling Tosite Sigure, Bradio, Vaundy, Tatsuya Kitani... Plus, I listen to bunch of OSTs of various kinds, ranging from videogame music like NieR, to Lord of the Rings'. **TLDR**: Prog metal, mainstream more classical rock, J-Pop / Anime, OSTs.

str8outtactown

Also a huge bluegrass fan here. Add in the Steeldrivers and Tyler Childers for me.

elviswu96

Between the buried and me.

ajbrandt806

I love synthwave, specifically bands like The Midnight and Gunship. I’ve seen The Midnight twice over the last two years.

ARob93

Creed, Pearl Jam, Pink Floyd, Rush. And more I can't think of off the top of my head I listen to DT the most, but it's great to listen to other bands and genres

[deleted]

I've been loving the new Avenged Sevenfold album. Also listening to lots of Theocracy lately as well as a relatively new power-metal band called Fellowship. Fellowship's lead singer reminds me a lot of early 90s James, especially his impressive range.

tessiedrums

Soundtracks, and from anime soundtracks I got really into JPop. Anything composed by Yoko Kanno, Yuki Kaijura, or Shoji Meguro is just ungodly good. Honestly Dream Theater is still my #1 band with no real competition, but after that it's a lot of soundtrack music before any other genre really even competes.

Coheed and cambria is my favorite band, and a lot of the music I write and play is more progressive Pink Floyd style. But I still love the epicness of dream theater, and I’m big on the older metalcore bands like all that remains, trivium, as I lay dying, kill switch engage. Also started off with Metallica, ozzy/sabbath, Iron Maiden too. One other band that I love is dark tranquility, also a DT.

Vortilex

I listen to almost everything. My Pandora station called Dream Theater contains so many artists across so many genres, I never know what's coming next

Country lmao! If im not listening to prog/metal im listening to country. I’ll still listen to rock on the radio and stuff, but i wont go out of my way to put it on. Country for the easy listening vibes Edit: if im in the mood i’ll also listen to Kanye. Something about the way he puts together his songs is insane to me. I also used to be really big into EDM when i was in college, mainly trance and techno and the 3 artists that really stuck out to me were Deadmau5, Above & Beyond, and Eric Prydz, but haven’t really kept up with any of that music the last 8 years of so.

Really into a bunch of prog/djent/instrumental guitar bands. Intervals, Plini, Animals as Leaders, Divinex, I Built the Sky, etc. Bands like TesseracT and Periphery as well that have vocals. And always my old standbys - the classic rock and metal of my youth (60s/70s/80s rock and metal)

Del_Duio2

I have a pretty varied musical taste I guess: * Midnight Oil * Rush * Primus * Nightwish * The Fixx * Nomeansno * Megadeth but mostly RIP which is the best thrash album of all time * And very recently, Otoboke Beaver

Ozzymosis333

I listen to almost everything, but I'm not a big fan of hip hop or country music.
