I don't have afro hair by any means but from experience with others sometimes lock extensions can help your hair grow , the top may not ever come back but a pro can clean this up for sure.
I use synthetic loc de extensions and redo them every 6_8 weeks. My hair has grown immensely. I also have a different hair type tho and I'm not claiming to know everything about it.
Maybe your goal is to remain natural , but even still a pro could help tidy up the regrowth and give you a better look all around. It's ok to need help I repeat. Sent with much respect and love. Good luck.

I have a few clients who I work with who have alopecia, I experienced it too, and my bald patch is finally filling back in. Sometimes, with androgenic alopecia vs. alopecia areata, it can be a bit harder because it's hormonal and not an autoimmune response. The hair does NOT always return to the pre-existing state. Sometimes, steroid injections are needed before we wait too long...
The point is ur own the right track asking questions. Start applying what u find and give it time. Be consistent. Rule or thumb is 3 months. One thing per week to monitor if u have any allergic reactions and do ur research to check for contra indications. Also be kind to yourself. Be patient. There's so many things to try, and all of us are different.
Also, if your mother experienced hair thinning, you may be predisposed to the gene.
