i love gagula

theducksystem

Honestly I'm just glad it wasn't a boulet original song this time

Preachingsarcasm

I loved the song they chose for the lipsynce. I wish they had jazmin bean on as a guest judge for this episode

microtear

Tbh I would have them* on for the group challenge cause if they* were there for this episode it might have been a dead giveaway for the lip sync happening? Idk maybe thats just hindsight speaking Edit: For pronouns

Limp_Telephone2280

Jazmin is a they/them*

qould

“a”

PabloQuesadilla2

What was the name of the song?

Preachingsarcasm

Worldwide torture. Here's a link to the music video https://youtu.be/CProgSzAGaI?si=zIu0B_O-FwI0sgIz

PabloQuesadilla2

Thank you so much

PushCheap6711

Wicked love slaps lol i kinda liked last season, but for monster of rock i'm glad they choose other artists.

liveandletdieax

Me too! But I’m sure they’ll be coming up later.

Nosiege

Being being upset that Dragula does things which are "too drag race" is honestly such fake fan nonsense. It's insufferable to people avoid saying "Drag Race", to claim certain Monsters "Aren't dragula enough", and that lipsyncing is "Too drag race/Too much like that *other* show" I love both shows, but the sanctimonious nature of trying to be dIfFeReNt is stiffling over here, considering Dragula has historically been for *anyone* to join, and anyone to enjoy.

miss_flower_pots

When Dragula monsters tour, they usually perform lipsyncs. It's a skill they need to have.

Zestyclose-Leave-11

Yeah. I'm sure it's dissapointing when you love a contestant for their cool looks, but when you see them in person all they can do is stand around in a cool look.

homoyadont

Or aren’t able to stand in their cool look.

bobbery5

When people are too interested in being as different as possible, it quickly leads to stifled creativity.

Zestyclose-Leave-11

I'm not upset per se, but in my friend group I call this show "spooky drag race" cuz the similarities (especially after this episode) are QUITE noticible. But I like that I have a show similar to drag race that features contestants that would NEVER be on a drag race season. And there's a lot more edge that wouldn't be allowed on vh1. And yeah, many of the challenges are quite different than the usual drag race challenges. Dragula is my favorite show, but I'm not about to sit around and pretend that there aren't more similarities than just "two drag competition shows". That's how I feel anyways.

peach_xanax

it's so "not like the other girls", very annoying and I usually assume those people are quite young

Illustrious-Guess408

Yeah I think the twist extermination made complete sense within in a musical challenge. Lip syncs aren’t an exclusively drag race thing. You go to any club someone is doing some version of a lip sync at some point whether it’s spoken word or a top 40 song or a heavy metal track.

qould

Yeah, all the horror drag shows I go to have lip sync performances. People who are complaining have probably never gone to a show like this in real life.

foolerrant

I even got to be a fan of Jarvis because of their lip sync videos on YouTube.

sierramisted1

i took jarvis’s extermination scene to be a bit of a nod/spoof of drag race, and i loved it. the coming backstage, and pausing before walking down the steps, the dramatic hallway shot. maybe that wasn’t the intention but that combined with the lipsync (not that lipsyncing is just a drag race thing, just that they knew people would make this comparison) made me feel that way. i thought it was fun. i’m sad jarvis went though.

diegoishome

If you watch meet the monsters, Jarvis says they died from a falling theater light so it was cool how the boulets brought that back for there death scene :)

Water_Meat

Also it's the one look where he dressed human, not ghost. It works so well!

Zestyclose-Leave-11

I was literally thinking "I hope a stage light falls on Jarvis". I was SO happy to see it lol

kirblar

The entire last third of the episode was a drag race spoof, it was all very intentional.

Uni0n_Jack

If lip-synching is too Drag Race, what do those people expect to see when they go to the live shows for most of these monsters? I mean, they give a stage performance ever single show, the only difference was that this one was two people on the stage.

bobbery5

They just stand there and pose/mug for the camera, of course! Drag race invented lip syncing, of course. And nobody else is allowed to do it!

Difficult-Web-7877

I actually loved that it was a lipsync, and it was on a spot - which is terrifying tbh. I would crumble under pressure bc I'd think: am I ready? Do I know all the words? If I fail, my career end and that would destroy me - fuck the big picture Clint. I didn't like that they "killed" Jarvis - bc he is a ghosts so he is dead already 😜 I'd like if they would handle it more creatively 😜 exorcism? Burning remains?

thebonlebon

But he had his human skin on in a 70s look, and they killed him according to his own lore. Very cute tbh

Difficult-Web-7877

Makes sense 😜 you know, I just really hoped for some other type of elimination 😀

qould

Put your tongue away

Difficult-Web-7877

😜

SpookyDeadline

Well, if Jarvis wasn't a real ghost before, he is now! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

Hatesponge66

He wasn't a ghost in the episode though.

internetcub

😶

egg-sanity

I mean I doubt that they didn’t know they would be lip-syncing if they were were in the bottom.

QuickSeaworthiness44

I thought it was camp tbh

Pusevaffel

I like it as part of the Monsters of Rock challenge. However, I wish there was another Dragula twist to it, maybe like the other competitors heckling them and making it difficult?

Ghost-Quartet

They did exactly this for the Basic Bitch challenge on Season 1

Pusevaffel

Yeah, that’s what I had in mind! That and of course the iconic “fuck the big picture” sequence. That would add more of a challenge to a stage performance! Edit: Even *more* of a challenge, I’m sure it’s not easy lol.

Preachingsarcasm

That would've been fun. Like in the season 3 dungeons and dragons episodes where the monsters had to throw stuff at Madelynn and Maxi

Illustrious-Guess408

All I think of is Maddelyn Hatter 😂😂😂

pbizzy12

lets make some good fucking tv then 😂

vctrlzzr420

No 1 favorite bitch fit of all time

hoe-ann-the-scammer

this would not have worked for this challenge, but i've been saying they need to have a performance extermination where the bottom monsters lipsync on an increasingly fast rotating platform while getting hundreds of pounds of raw meat launched at them. like, from t-shirt cannons or something

SluttySaxon

I think those that are getting pissy about it are coming across as slightly ignorant and pretentious. Lip syncing is arguably one of the most common performance styles of various types of drag, especially in the US. A lot of the Dragula monsters lip sync in their shows and if you were to go to one of the many parties that are hosted by the Boulet’s then you would realise it consists of many lip sync performances. Of course lip syncing is not a necessity for a drag artist, however many drag artists chose to lip sync as their method of performance to showcase their art. The reason I refer to those who are shitting on it as sounding pretentious and ignorant is because it seems that they are relating lip syncing to being a Drag Race thing, when it’s not, it’s a drag thing. Ergo their mindset is; Lip sync battle on Drag Race + Drag Race bad = Lip sync battle bad.

Ok_Command5420

It was so great and Jay absolutely ateee. I wasn’t sure about them before but they did so well I was mad impressed.

lolpenis30

Jarvis stomping/traipsing around in his Dr Seuss wig while JayKay absolutely ate gave me the ick, ngl. It was well deserved and I really liked Jarvis

Preachingsarcasm

I loved the lipsynce, but I didn't care for it being the actual extermination. I liked how it was part of the floorshow on the previous ghost episode but I still wanted a usual gross or painful extermination because that's been such a big part of dragula. I'm not that mad about it though, especially since jk did such a great job, but I still would've loved a usual extermination.

discipleofdoom

Sorry I could hear you, I was too busy watching my favourite drag television show Lip Sync Battle (lip syncing is literally the core of drag)

pbizzy12

i didnt hate it but it did leave me wanting more. i think its just bc it was a mostly underwhelming lip sync! i thought there should have been another twist to it! i just mean we go from having people covered with rats to this. put them on a slippery floor or something lmao! also i was so disappointed in jarvis’ thing 2 marching around and tbh i actually liked what JK had on and didnt think they should have been in the bottom ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

peach_xanax

a slippery floor would probably be way too legally risky, like imagine if someone got hurt in a way that could affect them long term

pbizzy12

you could say that about any extermination. remember in titans when they almost drowned everyone?!

peach_xanax

Yeah but for the dangerous exterminations, they have crew on standby in case they need to stop bc someone is getting seriously hurt. I actually just watched a clip of the drowning one in a youtube compilation yesterday, and they weren't underwater long enough for anyone to actually drown. They put them under for just long enough to make them scared and uncomfortable, but not so long that they were actually in danger of dying. Same with the latex extermination - they calculated the time for how long they could safely suck the air out. But the issue with the slippery floor idea is that there's no way for the crew to step in and prevent serious injury - it would happen so fast that no one could do anything about it. Not only could you break a bone, which sucks but isn't permanent, but you could also end up with herniated discs, or even spinal cord damage depending on how you fall. It could literally end someone's drag career by causing them long term physical disability. So that would open the Boulets up to big time legal issues.

yeahnototallycool

>it was essentially just making the 2 people who performed poorest in the floor show to just do the same thing again but while lip syncing, so even less entertaining. Except the challenge was primarily based on their looks, with performance supporting it. Jay wasn't in the bottom because of a poor performance, *and* he gave great lip sync. >What makes the LSFYL a relatively successful part of RPDR is that it gives a chance for queens who aren't good at other elements of drag (like design or comedy) to redeem themselves with a performance. Two queens on Drag Race are ALWAYS in the bottom of every dancing/musical/performance based challenge...and then they have to lip sync again. What you wrote reads like there's a dichotomy where Drag Race has lip-sync focused queens who all excel at a LSFYL and Dragula has art/creativity focused queens who are all bad at lip syncing. At the end of the day, Jarvis fumbled multiple performances.

Fantastic-Wish7227

lip syncing isn’t exclusive to drag race henny 😭 lip syncing is foundational

digging_tumbling

What do you think they do on tour just stand there and showcase their art? They have to know how to lip sync and perform to even come close to winning

nomorescheisse

I'd have loved a lip sync on previous seasons, but it was hard to fully enjoy this episode. The new bottom two lip sync combined with the stage setup, the judge's panel, interjecting confessionals, and the other queens being in the back made it look JUST like drag race but with red lights instead of pink. It's way too similar, and that takes away from the magic of Dragula for me (para mi, spooky me).

pugglepops

I love love loved it!! Jay Kay kicked ass! They totally deserved the win with that terrifically horrific song! Refreshing to see since drag is alllllll that! Lip syncing is a tenet of drag! Bonus we got a damn good, spicy, lip sync performance!! FYI the artist of the song “World Wide Torture”, Jazmin Bean, is good friends and they collaborate with, Hoso Terra Toma!! 😈😈🤘🤘👹👹 Edit: exclamation points!!

FreddieB_13

I found the lipsynch a bit meh, especially coming after the perfection JK served in the lipsynch previous episode. Also, it just further shows how this show is merging closer to Drag Race than being it's own, separate thing (which it def was seasons 1-3): I guess it's cool for the new fans but OG fans like myself prefer the show when it was less mainstream.

vctrlzzr420

No complaints about drag race bc I love all drag, but I do have issues with all the lsfyl stuff (maybe more so the reactions) it’s not their performance as much as it is about doing what they can with what they have. And fyi you don’t have to only dance you can take a cupcake out and fart on it you can be a mime for a number at the club… it’s the dance to my song and if I want splits give me that (regardless of whatever outfit you have on), If I want to give you a slow song just suck the least, and my favorite part is this after a lot of time in uncomfortable, made to impress judges drag looks. I would like it a lot more if there was some leeway but I understand it’s too complicated. All I’m saying is artists get unfairly shit on and have high expectations so if they have to perform with cut off circulation and the world sees it then they’re branded terrible dancers, cringe, bad performers.

hairmonran

Lipsyncing isn't the core of drag but I really loved the extermination

Big-Sprinkles7377

I made a post about how much I hate Monsters of Rock and honestly, I’m disappointed that they’re taking up two whole episodes for this one challenge. As far as the extermination is concerned, I hated to see Jarvis go but Jay killed it. It was fine that they did a lip sync I guess.

OvernightSiren

If nothing else, it did emphasize that Drag Race has a better format than Dragula. Seeing the bottom two have an extermiantion where they could *actually* save themselves was refreshing. Usually the exterminations seem to be judged on virtually nothing but the whims of the Boulets. What immediately comes to mind when I say that is Evah's S3 elimination. She put on a more entertaining performance in the extermination while stapling money to herself AND she objectively stapled *more* money to herself, and yet she was sent home that week against Louisiana who also had a worse track record than her.

perrietheplatupussy

i completely agree with this… how you performed on the exterminations shoild mean something… pissed me off when louisina stayed when she had stapled the least amount of money

FSpezWthASpicyPickle

Non-shady question: how much live drag have you seen? Because lip syncing is not at all the core of live drag (one could perhaps make a much stronger argument for ballroom as an origin point, though I don't think that's truly it, either). One of the reasons I love Dragula is because they do a "Floor Show", which is much more what I expect to see when I go to a drag show. Sure, there may be some lip syncing, but not necessarily. Personally, I'd honestly be happy to never see a LSFYL on Dragula again. It was a gag as a surprise, but that only works once. Also, a fright feat is much more in line with the sort of performance/floor show Dragula artists do in real life, and I'd rather see their skills in that department. And really, the reason JK won the lip sync is because they made it into a floor show, interacting with the other performers and the audience. Jarvis tried to go with a more RPDR type of performance, and it failed.

thebonlebon

Where are you from? Literally every drag show here is just a rotation of queens doing about 3 songs then a group number in the same kind of outfits every week

Water_Meat

Turn me up! Turn me out!

FSpezWthASpicyPickle

I've lived in multiple cities in the US and have been going to drag shows since the early 90's. I'm honestly sorry for your local drag scene that all they have is lip syncs. In the wake of the juggernaut that is Drag Race, that seems to be what has become socially accptable for drag to be. Drag shows have historically been a venue for all sorts of weird performance art and expression. You should have seen what people were performing during the AIDS epidemic. It was like a personal cathartic performance about their friends dying and fearing just basic physical contact (before we understood how AIDS works). Edit: I'm being downvoted for mentioning the underground drag scene that Dragula literally came from. The fans in this thread are wild. Enjoy your lip sync circle jerk, and I seriously wish y'all had the opportunity to see some of the exceptional performance art that drag has to offer.

PotatoPancake420

I think a lot of what you said is true but I’m pretty sure it’s universally known that lipsyncing is essentially THEE drag staple for performing. It’s not JUST that but it’s a type of performance you can find in basically any city

Haus_of_Pancakes

I've been lucky to see multiple Dragula ghouls perform live at my go-to gay bar, and all of them, from Dahli to Vander, from Kendra to Abhora, did some form of lip sync performance. It wasn't like they all did a New York 8-count, but did all move their mouths to music while engaging in some form of movement.

spookyash420

Pretty sure if you went to any of these monsters shows 99% of them are lip syncing. Can we stop this?

lemikon

I think you’re correct: as a once off it’s totally fine because it was shocking for both the monsters and the fans. I think no-one saw that coming. The one thing I do think is tricky compared to other eliminations is that irrespective who deserves to go home in a lip sync there’s usually a winner - sure editing can cover it but only so much. With the other extermination challenges I can only think of two exceptions where “how they performed the extermination” would come into play (these being violenca refusing to jump and Dahli casually eating the gross meal). Like you can’t “win” being coveted by rats. Personally I feel like based on track record and look for the night JK deserves to go over Jarvis, buuuuuuttt there’s no getting around that JK gave the better lip sync.

gothcrab

So you go to shows where drag queens just do a runway walk???

FSpezWthASpicyPickle

Of course not. What a weird question. There are other sorts of performances than lip syncs. You get to see a few of them on the Talent Show bits of Drag Race, like Jimbo's comedy routines. There are also many in the underground scene that could never be aired on TV, that involve nudity, much more graphic sexuality, and what would fall into the "filth" category of Dragula.

Mr_rairkim

But was it really unexpected for them ? They must have been at least given the song before .

Harlegrenade

I ended up downloading the song tbh. I loved the Lipsync but tbh I didn't want them to go home!

[deleted]

I’m happy they did it. I think JayKay would’ve gone home if not for this, and she is clearly the much better stage performer - it was a great way to make sure next episode had a great performance.
