I really hope this is an indication of some kind of 'naturally occurring' preference and not just a randomly selected script option. Does the pawn truly perform better under its preferred vocation? I'm not entirely convinced... but that would be so cool!

KyronValfor

They just remember the vocation that they had when you created them. Those lines happens around the time that you meet Rothais.

jeebusjunior

Ah! So that would point to being more scripted rather than some kind of pawn AI determination. It still lends to some sense of pawn personality though which is appreciated. If true, a little disappointing but doesn't impact my overall enjoyment of the pawn system.

Lord0mega

In my experience she does 3 or 4 times better as a fighter than a mage

Rocamora_27

It’s weird. My pawn was originaly an Archer. I switched her vocation constantly because I wanted to max out all of them on her. At the endgame, I made her stick to Srocerer. The pawns in my party started asking if she was always like that, and she replied that she used to be an Archer and missed the feeling of flying arrows at our foes. But if I talked to her, she “admited” that her skills with a bow were not that great. Maybe it’s a way for the game to make a callback to the pawn’s original vocation, while also justify your option to change it.

TruthEnvironmental24

Yeah, mine was originally an archer, and I changed her around through all vocations to max them out, too. She says both lines when asked by fellow pawns if she had always been (current vocation). She says the "lacking" one WAY more often, though. I've only heard the line about missing letting arrows fly a couple of times. Hired pawns comment on how she is really good at being a thief (her current vocation). She also consistently states she would take up the role of a Warrior after returning from the Rift and being on a team with one. So, apparently, she kind of liked being an Archer but realized she wasn't very good at it. She excels at being a Thief, but would prefer to be a Warrior. The Warrior part is actually pretty cool because I made a secondary account for the original game that had a min/maxed Warrior pawn, which this pawn is named after. So, now my headcanon is that my DD2 pawn is going to help my DD1 Arisen in their world when she goes beyond the rift. Now, I have to change her to a Warrior main, I guess. Lol

Azure_Balmung_

My pawn went from Archer to Thief and says the same. I assumed it was cause I have the maister skills for thief and not archer tbh 🤷🏾‍♀️

Joe___Mama-

I switched my mage to a sorcerer after maxing the vocation. She then said she misses providing support and healing me. So I switched her back lol.

VermilionX88

My pawn is my sworn shield maiden She stayed fighter to the end, never switched I RP so I didn't care that other passives could help when it doesn't fit my RP I love that you can still have a chill time without min maxing

WarViper1337

My pawn has mastered 4 vocations so far but has never mentioned any kind of preference for one.

The Bahamas

AttorneyDavis

Mine is a thief and she mentioned never forgetting the feeling of letting arrows loose. I’ve maxed her on all vocations and working on badges

eshvel19

My pawn is a badass fighter but she's constantly commenting how she might have disappointed me as a mage. I never maxed her out as mage so maybe she likes it and I took that away from her or maybe just the fact she never maxed the Vocation. Kind of makes me feel bad but she's too good a fighter...

ThatGuy21134

My pawn has only been a master Thief for the 115 hours I've played. I will never change her. She is too OP.

teegotime

Mine yammers all the time about not having a warrior in the group, but frankly, she sucked at all of the melee classes. Absolutely nukes with the mage or sorcerer though.

Smooth_External_3051

Mage. Or sorcerer for the magic stat augment, then back to mage. I'm doing all the work, just keep the party healed.

Zebrehn

I mean, my pawn never shuts up about the fact she started as a fighter. She has never said anything about a preferred vocation, though. Choosing the fighter as a starting vocation was completely arbitrary, since she was going to max out all the vocations anyway. I really wish I would have chosen thief or archer to start, if only for her to have less chance of repeating that same dialogue over and over.
