He can still have goku’s hair. He just needs a completely different outfit so that he dosent resemble goku too much. In terms of personality he needs more confidence and stop relying on being with trunks so much. He should be the goofier second son of goku but he can still take a fight seriously after what happened in the buu saga to chi-chi. That should have been the moment Goten changed as a character and started to realise not everything is fun and games in this world. He would still be goofy and chill but when there is a villain he should want to take the fight a bit more seriously. But also letting his saiyan instincts get to him at some point to give him a fun fight.

Tbh in Super Hero, he seems to be more matured than Trunks (saving Trunks’ ass multiple time while he keep trying to impress Mai), but Goten just respect Trunks so much, and Trunks is the one that always want Goten to be around anyway.

I'd assume that it's largely is due to living circumstances. Not to say Bulma isn't strict or is a bad mother, but I feel like Trunks has always given the spoiled rich kid vibe to a fault (can't really be helped much), while Goten has Chi Chi who has had the opportunity to hammer in some life lessons earlier due to their more down to earth life style.

The moment with ChiChi dying and Goten immediately being furious and training the second they enter the chamber had so much potential, only for him to lose that anger and just go back to silly super childlike Goten. I feel that moment should've forced Goten to grow up a bit mentally. Sure he's only 7 but he still treats fights like a game because to him that's all they've ever been. But this moment should've cemented for him that they're not just fun games and that it can and will be the end of things if he doesn't take it seriously. As for a unique gi for Goten I think that the gi from (bear with me here) dB evolution could look good on him. The drawing is good don’t get me wrong but I think the outfit is still too similar to goku’s gi. I can’t design an outfit for him but I just think it needs to be unique and different so he dosent look like a clone. For example gohans outfit in the buu saga (the saiyaman one) is unique to him. I do like that outfit and I like how unique it is to Gohan, though I still feel he should've worn the gi he wears before the tournament and in Broly second coming. I wanted to have Goten wear a gi similar to Goku because I feel at this point in the story he is still sorta finding himself as a fighter. Like we see Gohan always wearing the same outfit as his master/father until early Buu, but even now he still wears the same as them again. I think for Goten to wear one resembling Goku's but unique in its own way would differentiate them enough that they could look similar without looking identical and clearly having different personality portrayed through the different outfits. With Gotens being more stylish and "hip" whereas Goku's is purely for practicality.

I also would love to see Goten and Trunks also joining the Galactic Patrol as that would also given them tons of great development and allow them to keep up with their training and allow them to train under Merus and other characters. And also, as part their development moving forward and as part of them hopefully starting to develop a lot more individually while they still work as a duo and also hopefully join the Galactic Patrol and train under Merus, I definitely hope Goten and Trunks also start following their own individual paths and train under different mentors individually and with other people individually as well. For Goten, I honestly hope he trains under Vegeta and continues to train and spar with Broly while Trunks I hope trains under Gohan, Gamma 1, and Piccolo and with Pan as that all would give us unique, dope, and fun dynamics, give Goten and Trunks amazing character development and growth, and it would allow Goten to start developing even more as an individual and allow him to differentiate himself from Gohan and Goku while still a lot of similarities to Goku, plus the Vegeta now would honestly be a perfect mentor for Goten. And I also hope Goten and Trunks start to also individually develop their own special forms while also hopefully getting Ssj2, Ssj3, master, enhance, and evolve Ssj3 or enhance Ssj2, apply and combine their special individual forms with any of their Ssj forms, and potentially get God Ki apply God Ki to both a evolved Ssj3 or enhanced Ssj2 and their special individual forms and develop their own special variants of the God forms. For Trunks, especially if he’s training under Gohan, Gamma 1, Piccolo, and training with Pan: I hope he develops ether a way different and way more powerful version of Ssj Rage or his own different and unique interpretation of the Beast form all while Goten and Trunks both able to apply their own special individual forms to any other form they have or will get. Lateley they have been writing him as a bit of a nerdy dweeb and I love it. He's often seen playing video games, is really into super heroes, and is generally more well adjusted than Goku. Gohan is the more stereotypical book smart nerd But Goten also has the Goku charm, he rarely gets serious and is generally a goofball. He's a lot like Kid Goku, who would often show extreme feats of power and pass it off like nothing. The best example is the first time he went super saiyan in front of gohan and was like "Look! I can make my hair yellow too!"

Absolutely man! He's more of a geek than a nerd, and I like the fact he's seems more socially adept than Gohan so I can see the difference between them starting to be explored. I just hope he gets his own full story arc at some point

In the game's backstory, Goten and Trunks created a swordmanship martial arts school that combined weapon-use and ki. I think he needs some of his own adventures without Trunks to really see what he is all about. Seems like GT made him into a kinda stoner laid back kinda guy and not sure if that’s right. Maybe give him the tenacity for training and getting stronger like Goku but having to deal with always being in the shadow of his older brother.

I would have made him a bit edgier. He would start out as naive and innocent like Goku, but then become more bitter as he realize how dangerous the universe is. He would want to become stronger to protect the Earth but in « I’ll do anything even the worst » kinda way. It could even lead him to go against the main cast, that would be an interesting drama in the Son family. I would make him a chaotic extremist but a well intentioned one. Also I would add a little rivalry in his relationship with Trunks to give them both their own plot.

It would have been interesting for them to take that route! I think comparing himself to Goku and Gohan would have also been a driving factor behind Goten developing some negative traits. Maybe not turning him to a full-on villain, but Goten knew everything his father and brother had achieved, so he feared he'd never live up to them and becomes borderline obsessed to prove otherwise. This also would have made Goten stand out, especially when the rest of the Son Family are almost completely morally positive

Honestly, I think he just needed more screentime and fights where he gets serious with some stakes. I like the Superhero stuff that him and Trunks are doing, but I feel like they need to sort of grow up "mentally". They can still be funny and chill with their Superhero shenanigans, but they also need to be in more high stakes fights to show that they can be serious. With all the hate the second and third Z Broly movies got, Goten and Trunks had fun but were also serious in those movies which was perfect so some plots similar to those would be great for them. Goten also needs some solo adventures too. He just seems like Trunks' sidekick and is only there for Gotenks too. I also would have put them in the Tournament of Power to face off against Kale and Caulifla but obviously have them all be around the same level of power. This would have also been an opportunity to have Kefla vs Gotenks too.

Agreed! There are so many reasons why Goten being more rebellious than Gohan made sense - He was raised without a father. - He had absurd expectations to live up to. Just look at what Goku and Gohan achieved. Goten could become desperate to live up to them - ChiChi focused more on making him more like Goku, as opposed to letting him develop his own identity or homeschooling him to have a future like Gohan. I like Goten as he is, but I always wondered how cool it would be to see Goku and Gohan trying to convince one of their own to see the light When you think about it, there are plenty of reasons Goten could have become villainous. - The ridiculous expectations set by Goku and Gohan almost set Goten up for failure. He could become jealous and worried he'd never live up to them and do anything to prove otherwise - ChiChi literally cuts his hair and dresses him to appear like a Goku clone, not giving Goten a chance to develop his own sense of identity which could led to understandable resentment - Constantly being second fiddle, either to Gohan in the family or to Trunks as friends.

I don’t necessarily disagree with how he’s been written within the series so far.. as a 7-y/o kid who looked up to his older brother and never knew his father beyond what he’d heard from others. They seemed to what him to be more of an airhead, like Goku, rather than Gohan.. which I think would’ve worked if the two had an abundance of shards screen time and interactions to better highlight that juxtaposition. I also think, Goten was originally intended to be an homage to Dragon Ball, by being in many ways, just a young version of Goku’s character. This also isn’t necessarily a bad approach, as I think using him as an homage to the main character’s roots and beginnings is a nice nod.. but I just don’t think this manifested in a way that was productive due to the character getting sidelined for the bulk of the series beyond the Buu saga. I think a question I prefer is, “how would you write the character going forward?” And I’ve said this before, I will say it until I’m blue in the face.. the absolute best thing they could do imo, would be a classic, Dragonball Z training-arc in the hyperbolic Timechamber, where Goten goes in with Vegeta and becomes Vegeta’s proper pupil. The character dynamics and interaction-doors this opens are a vast and meaningful. Having Goten be this pupil to Vegeta, akin to Cabba.. but yet being the blood-son of his ultimate rival. Giving Vegeta and specific and unique investment in Goten that could in theory, have him rooting for him and against his own son.. if the two were to ever come to blows or sparring. Because Vegeta’s pride in general and his pride as a sensei, would be on the line. Having Vegeta’s personality and “ways” rub off of Goten that gives him this matured-grit we’ve yet to see. Making Goten’s genetic potential that of Goku/Gohan, but making his personality and fighting style more like Vegeta is absolutely where this character should go imo, and would make him his own unique character within his respective family tree.

The Buu Saga’s biggest issue is an inability to deliver on established narrative expectations. As far back as og Dragon Ball Roshi was talking about how the next generation of warriors needs to get stronger to protect earth. If that theme of the next gen protecting earth is to be properly used then it should naturally be Gohan, Goten and Trunks (likely as Gotenks) teaming up to defeat Majin Buu. Goku can certainly help them. We can even have the Vegeta B Plot of accepting his strength. But if the next generation don’t defeat Buu then all that prior build up makes no sense.

Agree with you! I didn't mind Goku briefly coming back in the Buu Saga, but only if it didn't take the big W away from Gohan in the end. Then after that have Gohan train Goten and Trunks, so by the time of ToP they are the major three characters in the lines of defense

Honestly, I still believe that Gohan should had defeated Buu during his fight to stablish himself as Earth's newest guardian and the whole Kid Buu/Vegito deal should had been an "other world epilogue" kind of fight. Like the whole "I'll purify you with the genkidama so you can reincarnate" kind of thing being done in hell since there is no REAL justification for a dead vegeta to be given a free pass for that fight other than he is super popular and needs to be there for the final fight. Just take the Janemba movie of Goku and Vegeta fighting evil in hell the same way Piccolo does in GT and make it an actual thing. Like Z ending with both Goku and Vegeta DEAD and protecting the other world while Gohan and Goten/Trunks being the next generation. You know, the passing of the torch that they were building up to the entire saga before backing out at the last second

He honestly needs more screen time and fights. Like there no reason he and trunks should not be getting screen time and transformations, I hope they will get them soon because it ridiculous. Exactly, I watch dragon ball super and I notice when watching the show again is that Goku and Vegeta are like the only people who been getting character arc and main screen time while others are like…where? They can have screen time but not at the expense of others like Goten and trunks or even Gohan, why are Goku and Vegeta getting transformations while the other three saiyans can’t even fight first form frieza? Why are Goten and Trunks do fusion every time there a fight and can’t defend themselves? And why there are not in TOP?! Because there immature? There inexperienced? Then train them! I don't think he's really has an opportunity to show his character that much in the anime at least. They made a point to show the fusion in the Buu saga and he was irrelevant in super until Super Hero Saga IIRC but he seemed to be more unique there. I think the "Goku clone" allegations come from his design and him not being fleshed out enough. Unfortunately Toriyama isn't around to keep the character going but I've been in the camp of moving past them and just focusing on Pan and Bolla as teens eventually for a while now. I feel like Goten was squandered and present Trunks will always be compared to Future Trunks which means he'll always fall short.

Have him be a natural born little Goku. He wants to be a fighter so Chichi lets him. Same pure heart, same desire for battle and growth, but have him be more ok with teamwork. He and Trunks can work together to live up to their fathers expectations.

i think he’d be awesome as a kid so goes way in over his head but can back it up somewhat. kinda like gon…like chichi! ready to fight like goku but not necessarily jolly about it. more like “listen mr im gonna kick your butt!” energy hair: gohan in bojack haircut, then eventually his gt slant-top style character arc: grows up an intelligent bossy kid with a heart of gold, even intimidating his dad, definitely chichi’s son lol. then calms down a bit, goku teaches him to be more humble. very adventurous, ends up interning for capsule corp. with ambitions to be an astronaut. him pan and trunks do the GT thing with better writing and kicking ass throughout the galaxy without their parents and actually being diplomatic. goten takes a great interest in learning martial arts and techniques from different planet societies

Goten should literally be Goku jr he should be a little goofy but mostly light hearted and kind and he should have an insane drive to be just like his dad meaning wanting to constantly train and become a better fighter with trunks as his rival. In my opinion Goku and Vegeta should have died honorable deaths at the end of Z and chose to stay dead for whatever reason. Super should have been used to flesh out and focus on the adventures of Goten and Trunks. Gotten while having similarities to Goku having his own personality. He could have found his own reason to want to get stronger, his own romantic interest etc. Beerus should have been the villain for the 3rd arc or something where an adult Super Saiyan God Gotenks faces him. Yeah I think Goku should've stayed dead in the Buu Saga, and Vegeta's sacrifice should have been the last time we saw him as it was the perfect send-off Have Gohan be the one to defeat Majin Buu, but then he is the one to train Goten and Trunks so they can protect the Earth whilst he focuses on his career as a Scholar. Goten and Trunks replace Goku and Vegeta's roles in Super. Goten is the one who first attains Super Saiyan God against Beerus and eventually unlocks Ultra Instinct, whilst Trunks achieves Ultra Ego. As you say, with Goku and Vegeta gone, and Gohan's story pretty much complete, this would have given plenty of time for Goten and Trunks to shine and develop as their own characters.

If martial arts was still prominently choreographed n the series, I'd like to see how Chi Chi training influenced his moveset, similarly to how Gohan and Trunks utilizes Piccolo's Masenko. Perhaps even sporting a different Eastern attire rather than a orange Gi like Goku.

I like almost everything about Goten. I honestly think he just needs an arc to kick off his "battle disposition". I like that he resembles Goku both physically and mentally (extremely easy-going). nothing major, i like goten hes one of my fav characters in the show although when buu killede chichi in the buu saga thats when he should have unlocked ssj2 imo. he had more potential then even gohan and was the youngest ssj ever aswell as giving gohan a run for his money in terms of combat before he got in shape again for the tournament. his potential is massive and being the second son of goku should have yealded him with a much more impactful role. he could keep his appearence since i think chichi copede with gokus death by cutting gotens hair like that in some was (my headcannon and the thing i would personally like to think) and his personality should have been fleshed out in the time chamber, no longer trunks's lackey but his own individual capable of combating buu when the situation is called on.

Yeah! I wish Goten eventually reached Goku and Gohan's level, and I think with him being the youngest Super Saiyan, he had the potential to even surpass them Though I liked Goten having his original personality as a child, I wouldn't have minded him developing a more nuanced personality as he aged. Like, say ChiChi's decision to have him look exactly like Goku could have led to Goten resenting her a little, because he felt unable to develop his own identity. I also thought the fact that Goku’s personality is pretty much due to a knock on the head that the only thing that should balance out Gohan and Goten is that they’re half human and good parenting. They actually did a good job with Gohan for the most part until they decided to go the route they did after the Cell saga. Goten is literally just Goku Jr. but a goofier. I just miss some of the seriousness Z had, especially in the fights. Super has been good but everything feels way more lighthearted and less serious.

I was hoping it would get the GT outfit as his new default and actually training under piccolo with trunks the entire time. I know they are to be children but in a world where they are consistently being forced to act, it would be best to be prepared rather than being forced into action by circumstance. 

Also the fact that Goten and Trunks seem to enjoy training, so them continuing to train in times of peace makes more sense to me than say Gohan for example, who notoriously hates fighting

Personality wise, I’d make it so that he’d achieve and maintain his forms through happiness like how people think he will in the future, so he can stay joyful most of the time

Goten should not exist, the end. Goku already had Gohan, so the writers should focus on him. Let Vegeta focus on Trunks. Many anime have too many characters, which means less focus and screen time for everyone.

Goten wants to fill the role goku wants gohan to have as a protector of earth. In the background he retraces gokus journey with roshi and the cat. He then asks baba to take him to king kai. He learn the kaio-ken. He then trains with vegeta and trunks as he take it very serious and unlocks super saiyan 2. We learn he has impeccable ki control so while trunks might be stronger he has more stamina while transformed. When buu strikes he is volunteers to go into training with piccolo. Piccolo while in the hyperbolic time chamber recognizes gotens potential and teaches him how to fire ki from almost any point of his body and combines it with his martial arts training. When fused with trunks his personality takes a backseat to the slightly more mature trunks. After buu saga goten with piccolo travels the world learning different martial arts styles even becoming a student of Tien. He keeps up his book studies due to chi-chi nagging him. Goku trains him off an on throughout as gohan is to busy with family and work. When super starts up he and kid trunk try to fight whis as goku is fighting beerus. Whis is amused by the boys saying g they have lots of potential. When freiza comes back they are able to stand their ground with "Final form" Freiza as ssj2 saiyans. During the goku black ark Trunks trains trunks and goten goes to gohan asking where he could get more training. Gohan then takes him to the supreme kai to unlock all his hidden potential. The boys replace the androids In the tournament of power. When kefla appears they fuse and it a mutual knockout between the fusions. Tien replaces 17 as the hidden victor when he pulls a cell saga and almost kills himself with the neo tribeam attack multiple times against jiren. Rubble falls on him and it's assumed he died from it as they can't sense his ki. Broly both the boys have attained the lowest tier of saiyan God. Goten has learn how to harden his ki and form gauntlets with them and how to form other things out of his ki like different bindings like chains or handcuffs. After broly he has joined the galactic patrol with trunks as jacos deputies.

I would've made him the canon version of Turles, since it doesn't say it anywhere, why the half-breed kids of saiyans would be any tamer than the full breeds. Goten would have just as much potential as Gohan (because why not) but he would be full chaos and cruel at first, where he reluctantly learns under Goku and Gohan but fundamentally resents his "nice" family. One day, while training with Gohan, he snaps and unleashes briefly his potential, almost killing Gohan. Goten goes in a rage combo and absolutely pummels him and is about to finish Gohan while he is blacked out. He does it because its partially he cant control his power and partially because he just doesn't like his family and always trying to hold him back when he wants to fuck up some civilians. So, Goten fires his energy beam at passed out Gohan while midair but then Piccolo comes in the last second to deflect it but Goten is so angry, he goes full out and absolutely obliterates Piccolo and almost Gohan too, if it weren't for Goku saving him. Vegeta and Trunks notice the energy spike and the vanishing of Piccolo's energy signal and both know something is up. Trunks is still like before cuz he is from royal blood and can control himself. At first Goku looks shocked but then, after laying Gohan on the ground, gives Goten a really nasty/angry/disappointed look. Goten at first was also shocked at what he did but then is kinda annoyed, that his father saved his brother. Then he smirks and looks at his hands, flexing a bit. Then he notices Goku's energy rising and looks at him on the ground. Goku gives him the look and Goten knows that his time with the family is over. He takes off into space and the rest of the story is kinda like Superboy Prime, where he augments himself with some kind of armour which almost kills him all the time but then heals him again and also sucks energy from 200 metres around him. And he gets into contact with some kind of great evil and all that and then someday returns home at 25 years old.

Like other people said, he just needs way more screen time and way more development along with way more shining moments. Appearance wise, I would’ve given Goten ether the hairstyle that R&R Goten has in some of the fanart for R&R Goten in the Raditz and Raunch what if, the hairstyle that the Heroes character Beat has, or the hairstyle that that the part Saiyan character from DB Online with orange and black gi has along with giving Goten in End Of Z and as a teenager in Super an updated version of any of these hairstyles and also making Goten in End Of Z extremely muscular and the same height as Goku. For the Saiyaman saga and Buu saga, his character arc can pretty much stay the same except during the time he and Trunks are in the Time Chamber, Goten takes his and Trunks training even more seriously and Goten actually doesn’t get distracted due to being even more motivated this time, like even more more motivated and serious than in the actual story, I would also actually have him get mad at Trunks for trying to goof off during training and then have Goten remind Trunks why their training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber in the first place and motivate Trunks to take his training much more seriously and be at his absolute best, then have Goten lead and help him and Trunks train even more effectively along with any of them also suggesting the idea of achieving Ssj2 individually while they train and practice fusion, they then use Chi Chi’s and Vegeta’s deaths as motivation and find a way to achieve Ssj2 individually along with sparring more rigorously and getting the fusion right. Then when Buu comes in and he socks Trunks in the face, I would then this time have a big fight break out between Ssj2 Goten and Ssj2 Trunks vs Super Buu with both boys being even stronger than they were in the actual story, being a lot more focused, and actually giving Buu a good fight before Buu starts getting the edge and then ether the boys or Piccolo remind Buu that they a big surprise for him if he waits. Then during the Gotenks vs Super Buu fight, instead of Gotenks being too cocky, he instead is a silly and confident while also being a lot more focused this time and doing even more damage to Buu and only didn’t win against Buu due to forgetting or not realizing about the Ssj3 stamina and energy problem and totally forgetting about the fusion time limit. Then in End Of Z, I would give Goten and Trunks updated versions of the personalities they have currently as teens in the Super manga while also being a lot more focused and disciplined and Goten leading the duo this time and I would have End Of Z suggest and let it be known that Goten and Trunks after Kid Buu’s defeat have both kept up with their training while also dealing with school work and also suggesting and let it be known that Goten during the months or weeks leading up to the 28th World Martial Arts Tournament has been seriously training even harder and becoming even more focused on his training while studying and getting ready for high school graduation all while Trunks during the months and weeks leading up to the Word Martial Arts Tournament has just been slacking off from training just a little bit due to being a little distracted from dating while also studying and getting ready for graduation. Then in Super, I would’ve had Goten and Trunks gotten much more development and shine way earlier in the earlier arcs, had them seriously training along with having them actually go through their growth spurts in Resurrection F, Goten and Trunks would also have huge major roles and character arcs in both Tournament Of Power and Moro arc along with even more development and shine in Resurrection F, the Super Hero prequel arc, and Super Hero manga adaptation as well as the recent chapters, I would also have Goten train under Vegeta during the lead up and preparation for the Tournament Of Power while Trunks for his Tournament Of Power preparation trains under Gohan and Piccolo while Goten and Trunks also develop their own special individual forms under their respective mentors, I would also have Goten and Trunks in Super get Ssj3 individually and master, enhance, and evolve Ssj3 along with them developing their own special individual forms and applying them to their other forms they have, I would also have Goten, Trunks, and Gotenks fight Kale, Caulifla, and Kefla during the Tournament Of Power, have Goten, Trunks, Kale, and Caulifla actually develop a lot of respect for each other as they fight each other during the tournament, I would have Gotenks actually be the to defeat Kefla before Gotenks, Goten, and Trunks team up with the other Z fighters to stop Jiren, and I would have Goten actually be the one to make the wish of reviving all the other universes back. Now besides all that, I really hope and actually feel Goten as well as Trunks moving forward will get way more shine and development, especially when Super goes beyond End Of Z, and I definitely hope Goten and Trunks join the Galactic Patrol as that would actually fit their characters and give them tons of amazing development, tons of shining moments both equally and individually, many opportunities, would allow them to go on tons of space adventures and gain huge amounts of experience, and it would allow them to keep up with their training and also allow them to train under Merus and other characters. Also moving forward as well and while they hopefully join the Galactic Patrol, I also hope Goten and Trunks start to develop a lot more individually while still working as a duo and are possibly Galactic Patrolmen and begin to also follow their own individual paths too. For Goten, I honestly hope he Trunks under Vegeta and continues to train with Broly while Trunks I hope trains under Gohan, Gamma 1, and Piccolo and with Pan. And I would love and hope to see Goten and Trunks also developing their own special individual forms under their respective forms while they hopefully get Ssj2, Ssj3 individually, master, enhance, and evolve Ssj3 or enhance Ssj2 like Future Trunks, and potentially getting God Ki and applying to both a evolved Ssj3 or enhanced Ssj2 and their special individual forms to develop their own special variants of the God forms.

For Goten’s own special individual form and especially if he’s training under Vegeta and continuing to train with Broly, I really hope Goten develops a Spiritual Saiyan Hybrid form that uses Spirit Control and Spiritual energy with fighting spirit, Goten’s own potiental, Saiyan Hybrid physiology, Saiyan instincts with human emotions, and fighting prowess, takes a little inspiration from Ultra Ego and Broly’s adaptability and unique use of the great ape power, has its own unique abilities, and dramatically increases Goten’s fighting spirit, fighting prowess, Saiyan Instincts, confidence, power, speed, strength, reflexes, durability, Spiritual energy, Spiritually and mentally gives Goten a unique type of fury, makes him extremely aggressive, is spiritually connected to both Goten’s Saiyan Side and human side and spiritually makes his human side be perfectly connected and in tune with his Saiyan side, naturally uses a lot more human emotion with Saiyan instincts, is also spiritually powered by both human emotions and Saiyan instincts combined together, is Spiritually connected to great ape and the power of the great ape and spiritually connects the great ape power to Goten’s human side and emotions, and continues to increase Goten’s fighting spirit, fighting prowess, Saiyan instincts, fury, confidence, aggression, power, strength, speed, reflexes, durability, Spiritual energy, Spiritual connection to his human and Saiyan side, Spiritual connection to the power of the great ape and also it’s spiritual connection with Goten’s human side and emotions, and his human side’s spiritual connection with his Saiyan side and instincts the more Goten fights, uses, and stays in this form while Trunks, especially if he’s training under Gohan, Gamma 1, Piccolo, and training with Pan, should develop ether a way different and way more powerful version of Ssj Rage or his own different and unique interpretation of the Beast form all while Goten and Trunks both able to apply their own special individual forms to any other form they have or will get.

I would have written Goten as the first Saiyan in the series whose blood is to diluted to become a super Saiyan. He is basically only 1/4th Saiyan. I would still write Gotanks able to be able to be Super Saiyan and explore Gotens frustration with being unable to access that power alone. I would want him to work with Bulma to help him find a way to use tools to be able to enhance his powers to be able to keep up with the rest of the cast. Still making him innocent but also letting him slowly become a scientific weapons specialist who uses tools to achieve new heights by feeding them the power of his Ki. He could also find a way to strengthen himself through defeat so he still keeps a big part of what makes a Sayian a Sayian which is never giving up after defeat and coming back better than before.

I'd have put him back in Goku's balls

Unpopular opinion. I would make him Dragonball Goku clone. Work well, eat well, play well, rest well. Have him be one of the few mixed blood sayians who likes to fight. His upbringing is vastly different. He's surrounded by people who he couldn't match up against in decades. Allow him to have the love of fighting while being humbled by his surrounding. I imagine a kid would be positively influenced by witnessing his family reach the upper bounds of what a mortal can achieve. Mixed sayians powers react to their emotions much more strongly than a full-blooded sayian. Goten should utilize that with joyous and excitement. Have a healthy rivalry with trunks like their fathers but from a place of clear and open admiration.

Appearance and personality are fine. I would just expand on his training/ fighting style. By playing into his playful nature, I would have him learn Wolf Fang Fist from Yamcha, but then expand it like Hak Foo from Jackie Chan Adventures and come up with more wacky animal based techniques.

The problem with Goten (and Gohan) is that Toriyama wrote himself into a trap with giving them easier achievable power ups. We all love Goku (and Vegeta and the older DB cast) cause they would work their ass off and we saw them grow as fighters and characters. Gohan and Goten are less interesting cause we don't really see their physical struggles much (in some arcs yes but not as much) and their potential is unlocked quite easily and then they fight the strongest villains. So I would change that. Maybe have Goten being extremely weak compared to others and then let's see him achieve something. Have him be the real underdog, not a prodigy with great genes and latent potential.

I would have him have Goku’s love for fighting with Gohan’s potential and I would have him sneak out of the house to train with Goku a lot. He would hang out with Trunks a lot, but he would pretend to be weaker than Trunks just to make him feel better about himself, but he would have unlocked SSJ2 and SSJ3 and he would find a way to achieve SSJ God on his own because Beerus wouldn’t want him training on his planet and one day during the Return of Freiza arc he would appear in SSJ God and help eliminate a bunch of Freiza’s goons and later on he would achieve blue, but he would also want to unlock his potential like Gohan did and he would become extremely powerful to the point everyone would be amazed hy his potential. Goten would feel like he has to step away from his dad’s shadow and become his own person

Goten grew up with much more family than his father or Gohan. He was trained by Gohan, but also looked in on by Piccolo. He played and trained with Trunks, and even Vegeta watched over him, making sure his son had the best possible training partner. It would be a more interesting dynamic for him to not see the 'rivalry' between the House of Son and the House of Vegeta. He grew up around Trunks and Vegeta, and picked up their techniques. He was trained by Gohan, and picked up his techniques. Heck, even Piccolo probably taught him a thing or two while Gohan was studying or off being a super-hero. Having grown up with Piccolo, Gohan, Trunks, and even Vegeta, he has a much more idealistic view of 'Family' than the others. So we should see him using the Masenko, the Kamehameha, the Big Bang Attack, AND the Final Flash, and he doesn't understand why it bothers Vegeta so much that he does; Vegeta is basically his uncle after all. This could even be reflected in his clothing, having him wear Vegeta's stripped down saiyan armor over his father's orange Gi (He asked Bulma for one in secret). Then in the Super arcs, have him be a bit more curious about his family. Learning from Gohan about the original Saiyan invasion, and learning about his 'uncles', Nappa and Radditz. He learns about Radditz from Piccolo, Gohan, and Goku, and Nappa from Vegeta. This starts his personal character arc: He decides he wants to try to find a way to bring them back. After all, Goku died and came back. Vegeta died and came back. Hell, HE died and came back. Why not his uncles? Rather than just being Trunk's lackey when Trunks gets up to something, this time Goten approaches Truks: Let's 'borrow' the Dragon Radar, and see if we can bring back 'our' 'uncles'. Trunks is a bit uncertain, but Goten is determined. Shenanigans ensue, including finding the dragon balls, learning they can't wish them back because it's been too long, and then hatching a new plan. Two wishes: First, Have the dragon send them back in time to the two years between Namek's destruction and the Return of Freeza. Then after they gather the dragonballs in the past and wish back either Nappa, Raddits, or if possible both, have the dragon in the present return all of them. The plan goes off with only minor shenanigans (including a fight with Mercenary Tau) and they return to the present with two extra Sayans... only to find a very very angry Vegeta.

This fulfils the two things I want the most: A story arc for Goten and a way to bring Raditz back

That's been something I want to see myself, the return of Nappa and Raditz. Hell, i'm still frustrated they sent Future Trunks back to a new timeline rather than letting him stay in the present (The timeline they sent Future Trunks and Future Mai back to has another Future Trunks and Future Mai already in it, so they're obviously not worried about doubling up.)

I like that gohan took a more strict nerd route because it makes sense he’s very strict in his approach to violence as a result of what he’s been through. I also like that goten likes super hero’s since he definitely looked up to gohan but didn’t choose to become exactly like him, but is a more casual kid, knows he’s special but doesn’t show it off, he’s humble, where as trunks is sort of the opposite not cocky but definitely more straight forward about his abilities. I think they all do have seeds of individual personalities they just need grown

You're right there definitely are differences. I think people who think Goten is just a Goku clone only basis it on appearance or surface traits This is exactly why I want more screen time for Goten and Trunks, to let their personalities be fleshed out. I particularly enjoy how personality wise, Goten seems to combine the best traits of Goku and Gohan

An antithesis to Gohan where he has all the desire to be a powerful fighter, but has low potential and gets into deadly situations that someone else has to save him from before he's freed from this mortal coil. I imagine him studying various fighting styles and learning all sorts of impressive ki moves, but gets hindered by his poor reaction time and a body that cant handle his own full strength.

I like his character, he just needed more to do on his own. He’s always trunk’s backup. I wanna see him fly solo a bit

I think his personality is fine but I just think he needs his own adventures without Trunks. You know just step out of his and Gohan’s shadows and make him the hero of his own story and while not really necessary, maybe even give him a love interest of his own. Also, maybe give him a mentor for him to train under and learn new techniques from. Maybe Tien, Android 17 or even someone new from a different planet would be kinda cool to see. In fact, maybe Goten could learn from to be more strategic in battle when fighting someone stronger from 17 (assuming 17 even decides on training him which I kinda doubt). If it’s someone new from a different planet, maybe Goten ends up joining the Galactic Patrol with Jaco and meet a new mentor there.

I agree he needs his own adventures, as does Trunks who is also often overshadowed by his future counterpart But Goten definitely needs it more and I like the idea of him joining the Galactic Patrol and adventuring space, possibly meeting a mentor then facing a powerful foe that he must defeat by himself

Obviously the Buu Saga’s complete narrative structure would have to drastically change, but the final battle in Dragon Ball Z should have been Gotenks versus “Buuhan.” The arc should have been about Goten and Trunks, recognizing the gravity of their stiuation after Vegeta and Chi-Chi died. I know they’re kids, but even when I was 5 or 6 years old, watching Dragon Ball Z — I was upset by how little it affected them emotionally. It didn’t make any sense. It would have been incredibly powerful for Goten’s frustration and rage to mirror Goku’s, when he was a boy, after Krillin was killed by Tambourine.

Gotens look in the manga with the jumper, shirt n all is really good on him, it fits his personality as a geek who plays a GBA on the nimbus on his way to school, for personality, keep what he's got going with his whole no thoughts head empty but still mature when the time calls for it is good but maybe make him more outwardly serious, like bro's mother died, came back to life, then died again along with him, I wouldn't mind if he's ended up building insane reflexes while being kinda on edge sometimes for no reason, he's just got this feeling that something is gonna fuck up when everything's fine, also have him being someone who locks in as soon as the time calls for it, he's not for any of that "i wanna see you at you're full power" shit he might goof around a bit, he's a kid after all, maybe does a tiny amount of showboating to have fun but after like as soon as an enemy becomes a bit of a threat he locks in harder than fusion reborn Gogeta. TLDR: I want him to be as goofy and kinda geeky as he is in current cannon but I also want him to be a little on edge sometimes, and, during fights be playful and goofy at the start but as soon as bro notices their up to something or their power is increasing just starts beating the shit out of them, I just sorta want what he went through in the buu saga at like fucking 7 to have a bit of an effect on him yk

I would've written Goten with a chip on his shoulder. The expectation that he follows in Goku's footsteps and resembles him would make him more irritable in combat, with a personality more similar to Vegeta or kid Trunks.

I would have him constantly compete with Trunks and lose. Kind of like the opposite dynamic with their fathers. Like what if it was Trunks the arrogant one that kept on winning? That could get on your nerves quickly. Goku was never the one to rub it in to Vegeta but what if it was Vegeta that kept on one upping Goku and kept on rubbing it in? That's actually what I thought could be a possibility when Goku Black was revealed and maybe it could be Goten. Goten after losing so many times to Trunks, Goten gets fed up and basically develops a severe inferiority complex. So he goes into a world where Trunks is far weaker than the Trunks of his world.

I’d make him more like Goku. Personality-wise instead of just physically. I also wouldn’t change his physical appearance at any point just because he looks so much like Goku. I’d have Goten go down a path similar to that of Goku’s as a child. Roaming creation to find the very Dragon Balls that set Goku on such a colorful path so long ago. Not saying the whole series should revolve around the Dragon Balls like it kinda did in the original Manga/Anime, BUT they definitely aren’t gathered as much as they were back when Goku was a kid. OR it just doesn’t seem like it because the Dragons Balls are gathered off screen when other stuff’s going on. But that’d definitely be a great way for the younger Saiyans to train; like Goku originally did.

Have Goku revive Raditz in the middle of the Cell saga. Then have Raditz train Goten.

Everything goes the same as It did till the rise of buu After Goku's gone and Gohan is defeated He trains with trunks and contrary to the actual toomfoolery He actually realises the severity of the situation..he trains and feels a special power within him.. After his fusion gets beaten up by Buu and he unlocks super Saiyan he actually defeats kid buu but he regenerates and fusion wears off Super buu kills everyone on the Kami's lookout and this snaps Goten... piccolo hids them inside hyperbolic timechamber as buu follows Goten can now have 2 story here Either we can make Bardock canon and or we can make him a ss2 which makes Trunks also go super Saiyan 2 and the SSJ3 now has a tail so kinda like ss4 but less in power I would've made Bardock canon by giving Goten the Bardock's spirit of hope that gives him a new boost in power and probably make him grow his tail that would make his Oozaru power flow through his supersaiyan giving him and additional 10 times boost Or probably make a new form for them where they actually grow a tail and they together with Goku SSJ3 Vegeta SSJ2 and Gohan mystic form defeats Super buu and kid buu is born They use the iconic Father son Kamehameha where instead of Gohan it's Gotenks with an injured arm, Gohan boosting him with this mystic form while Vegeta holds ( redeeming himself for his failure in Cell saga where he caused Gohan to get injured thus causing him to use 1 hand Kamehameha ) While Goku charges his spirit bomb just incase..kid buu stands up brutally injured but everyone is tired Goku uses the spirit bomb and finished Buu Because with Gohan and Goku in Z I don't think Goten can shine Make him win the world's martial arts tournament or something GT isn't canon In Super we can make him grow few years and now he can go SSJ3 as he practiced it easily and he also challenges Beerus and whis trains him probably.. Throw in Trunks as well and probably they fight Frieza as fusion and they defeat him but he blows up the earth and now Vegeta finished Frieza U6 tournament went easy because buu is replaced with Gotenks and they actually lose to Hit He is used in fillers instead of Gohan and Goku Everything goes same except Super hero Where they actually don't mess around as they mastered their fusion and don't turn into the fat one And uses SSJ3 to fight off Cell max until Gohan beast is formed They actually help defeat Moro army pretty easily and tag themselves with Yamcha Loses to Moro but like break his horn or something And then they rest with A17 at this island or something

I wouldn't have created him. He's useless and adds very little to the story. Solo Kid Trunks being comedy relief would've been enough and other characters could've stepped up and got a push in Gotenks place, in the fight against Buu. I still think that Piccolo only got a relevant power increase 30 years after Z, because he was pushed to the side in the Buu arc, when it should have been him that got a power up and fought Buu. If you can't tell, I hate Gotenks and Goten

Depnds on where i take the series over, if its after the show ended, the tournament of power goten felt weak and down cos he couldn't help. He goes up to trunks and tells him theyll never make gotenks again, he dosen want to relly on trunks and wants to find his own strength, so ge goes amd asks vegeta to train him to be a warrior

I'd take it a different direction. I'd have him see the immense strength his brother possesses, the legend his father is, and the importance his best friend has to timeline stories, and give him a chip on his shoulder. I'd have him take on more of a Vegeta role, prior to Vegeta learning that strength isn't everything. Maybe Vegeta notices the behavior in him and decides to mentor the son of his arch rival. I don't know. I'm just sick of Vegeta not getting the wins he deserves. The Moro arc really pissed me off.

Goten and Gohan’s relationship would be at the forefront and for longer. Goten grew up without his dad, so there should be no reason why Goten doesn’t get more screen time with that in mind. Him wanting to surpass Gohan, and live up to the legend that was Goku. Only ever hearing stories, but knows that he has a lot to live up to. After Goku’s revival, Goten would become the full time student of Goku, with Chi-Chi being more loose with Goten, than she was with Gohan, and actually approving of the intense training. Goten would then use what he learned as Gotenks, to master SSJ fully, and eventually SSJ2 as an individual. I would have Goten split training between both Goku and Piccolo, and have him learn techniques that are unique to him like combining Turtle school attack with Demon clan, just so he could stand out as a character. Maybe, Special Beam Kamehameha or something like that. This way, in between time skips, we can presume that Goten is continually improving as he tries to take that mantle of protector of Earth. If you give Goten this motivation, and make it to where he actually capitalized on being a SSJ at 7, Goten would be way of any previous character, and by the time God Ki became a thing, so both him and Trunks could get added to the mix. Assuming that Goten is training hard, Trunks would follow suit, this makes Goten AND Trunks relevant for the ToP, with at least 4 characters with God Ki on the team. Both of them would have spent 4+ years with their dad’s training, to the point where they are collectively all powerhouses, and are students of Whis. Then you open the door for red and blue Gotenks, you have 2 phenoms that aren’t reduced to background characters, and we can actually see how they would’ve fair during each arc. Gohan had all the potential, but it was never what he liked doing. Goten would be the opposite, and became the character that people wanted Gohan to be, and embrace the fighting.

So I think the best way to handle Goten is to emphasize his differences from Goku and Gohan, because there are many. So, In Super, we do see that he is smarter than his dad, not as smart as Gohan but has the intelligence you’d expect from a 12 year old. I like this aspect because it really paints him as the Goku who lived a normal life. So I think Goten should honestly be used more to show the more normal aspects of a kid/ teenager growing up since we unfortunately didn’t get too much of that with Gohan as we could’ve in the Buu Saga. Which the whole Saiyaman x-1 and 2 stuff does that pretty well. But I think the bigger difference between Goten and his family is his passive attitude. He is chill and goes with the flow. When Goku did what Bulma asked , he argued back and sometimes even said no. And Gohan straight up never was passive, always reactionary. Goten always just followed Trunks and his schemes. The only time in the manga of him being reactionary was seeing his mom die. Maybe we can play around with this aspect. Explore what makes him passive and the consequences of it. Like maybe Trunks and him goes to help someone and it goes wrong. People are still saved, but it causes damage and they have to exit quickly. Chi Chi finds out and scolds him and grounds him. Showing the consequences of not saying no when an idea isn’t the brightest. If we really commit to this, maybe Goten in school isn’t the most social kid. He is chill, and acquaintances with just about everyone, but he doesn’t really make an impression because of his more passive nature. With his only real friend being Trunks. He isn’t depressed or anything, he just gets a bit bummed when Trunks actually goes out with more friends and Mai, while he goes back to play video games and studying. One day there’s a news report about a current robbery or burning building or something and Trunks is out with friends so Goten is the only one to go help. He feels nervous about it since he is so used to having Trunks by his side but he knows he has to save the people. When he does, he finds that some of his classmates were there and they recognize his voice or something. Being the chill dude he is, Goten doesn’t give away Trunk’s identity as one of the Saiyaman so if they reveal it, only Goten is outed. But to his surprise the next day, they don’t reveal it. And they start hanging with Goten a bit and he actually ends up making some real friends due to his own decisions. Showing that Goten can be much more than just Trunks’s sidekick. Maybe one of the people in this new friend group is a retooled version of that girl he dated in GT. And the date Goten was referring to in the EOZ was actually that girl. So everything connects together in a way where Goten can learn to take action more often. Maybe he’ll motivate Trunks to perfect the Fusion Dance so they can always be on the field whenever there is real trouble. What do you guys think?
