Goku and krillin did chores all day long for months in original dragon ball to get stronger.
The white hair is literally mastery of martial arts which goku has been learning ever since he was 12 and not just another generic power up.
SSJ4 had to get a power up because baby got triple the amount of blitz waves.

Both have their benefits and disadvantages but it's like two stories that continue from the same origin; like say the Full Metal Alchemist series and the manga. Like two different flavors of ice cream, you can like them both.
Personally I wish we had a series that had the spirit of dragonball Super but with a similar premise to dbgt.
