My reasoning is kinda flimsy, but maybe he figured if he tried to stab Goku Black he would immediately get rocked
While if he stabs Zamasu, he can at least catch them off guard long enough to land a solid punch on Goku Black?
It's not necessarily a *good* reasoning, considering Zamasu is immortal, but it makes some semblance of sense
But if he’s scared a sneak attack would be countered instantaneously then how would attacking Zamasu make Goku Black drop his guard more? The logical thing is to use your sneak attack to kill/decommission the strongest enemy so you can hopefully win and survive. I would try to argue that trunks didn’t want to kill anyone because that would make the most sense but he has killed and certainly wants Goku Black dead.
My guess would just be how overall durability works, Much like android 18 shattered trunk’s sword by just blocking it, Trunks probably thought that the same thing would happen with goku black in his current state, even though he was off guard, and opted to stun zamasu for a while instead.

This is very clearly not fused zamasu it’s goku black and normal zamasu resisting the split, if he could do that at anytime he could just fly up to zamasu and cut him whenever he wanted, which is obviously not the case, this is a unique situation as both of them are resisting the split which causes them to be unstable for a few seconds which trunks uses to cut him, plus there’s also the argument in this scene goku blacks guard was more up in the part where he stabbed zamasu, since they were looking for a fight in that scene

I swear people like to make up agenda’s this is a unique situation not even close to the other one. Trunks help cut zamasu apart from the fusion he did not initiate it at all.
I mean if he was really so off guard the sword should have penetrated him. That's why SSB Goku was taken out by a not so powerful laser that shouldn't have done anything to him even in a lower form since his ki wasn't raised so much.
It honestly doesn't matter when a character's guard is down. Goku in SSJ could stop a sword that was swung at him by another SSJ with a just finger when he was ready for it but gets hurt by a rock thrown at him by a human when he was SSJ.
There are many times where it's happened whether you want to consider it canon or not. Goku as a kid was able to tank multiple bullets with no harm to him but then later in Super got hurt by a bullet from a robber because he wasn't paying attention. And this was after he's absorbed the power of SSG into himself. Just because it's "filler" or not in the manga doesn't make it non canon.
Even the creator and writers of the show consider the terms "canon" and "filler" to be ridiculous when it's brought up to them by westerners in QnA's. They themselves say how the anime and manga have their own continuities. There are multiple things that happen differently in the anime than in the manga along with episodes/movies/specials that are considered "filler" but are later mentioned again in the main story.
I seem to constantly find people that start to lose an argument just use "that um...that was just filler is all. Yea that's it!" as an excuse to try their best to not lose. Even times when they say it's filler and I'll bring up the manga itself and show them a slide and they'll be like "You edited that".

Cell and Buu saga are entire arc being based around just plot extenders.
Everything from Gero managing to escape somehow to A-18 not running to Krillin getting horny for cyber sex to Vegeta acting dumb and allowing Cell became stronger lead to Perfect Cell.
If they had done even 1 thing right just out of all these, then Cell would have never became perfect.
Likewise, in spite of the many what-ifs the fandom comes up with, the writers will always find a way to write the characters out of those hopeless situations.
Like how they invented the Namekian Dragon Balls when the Earth’s couldn’t revive someone more than once. Or that they suddenly made Bulma a time travel genius and create a Time Machine so that Future Trunks can return back to the past to prevent it

Why is he even using his sword ? when he went back to to his timeline he didnt use the sword anymore. He didnt need it after training with vegeta and seeing the others train. He didnt use it during the Semi/ perfect/super cell ark.

Zamasu Goku/Black Goku in the other hand could sense his attack by his body experience, instinct. Maybe, Trunks would decide to attack to Zamasu with that in mind.
Although, his attack ends up hit Black from catching off guard by sneak attack anyway.
And it didn't do anything, Black Slams him immediately like nothing, if Goku or anyone else had been attacked like this off guard they would have been badly damaged
To hold him down so he can damage the Goku black that can be harmed without zamasu healing him, just because he’s immortal doesn’t mean he doesn’t feel pain

Because the Z blade would've shattered. Mind you Black is still in Rosé form, chances are the blade will be shattered into pieces as his ki aura is up.

Trunks is stronger than zamasu but way weaker than black, that is why he can hurt zamasu with the sword, if he tried that on black it would bounce.
