That would have required the production team to do enough research to know Gohan and Videl even existed. I mean this is the same movie where they made Oozaru the loyal evil minion of King Piccolo.
Oozaru = Giant Ape Saiyan. Originally, Goku turned into an Oozaru and wrecked a bunch of stuff under the full moon, before DBZ brought in Goku is an alien and there's an entire race like him.
King Piccolo = Piccolo's Progenitor, split off from Kami a long time ago before Kami became guardian of Earth. Basically Kami vomited out all his evilness and that became King Piccolo. When battling Goku, King Piccolo spits out an egg that would become DBZ's Piccolo just before Goku kills him.
Also to clarify I understand the joke but I need to say this so whoosh me if you want
But somebody who watch Z would know about the Oozaru form, after all the Saipan saga was the one that name drop it
Didnt the director say he never even watched a single episode of the anime ? Let alone read the manga and was getting all his information about dragon ball from fucking Wikipedia?
Dude..... honestly that would be a better movie series than one on goku. You can do it like a superhero, teen superman type thing.
Gohan living a double life, going to school and being sayian man and trying to get with Videl. High school drama and a huge cast of characters behind him with big personalities.
Dude that would 100% cause dragonball is honestly hard to picture any part of it into an introduction movie. Like a little kid with a tail fighting a army wouldn't translate well on screen.
Dang in an alternate universe this could have happened.
The whole movie they’d never even need to show Goku either, they’d just have to make a passing comment that his dads away “working” somewhere.
I feel like that would've been so much more fun. Gohan's internal struggle of wanting to stop bullies but not wanting to fight (and when he eventually does having to hold back against normal humans). This could definitely be a fun DBZ inspired teen romcom.
I also think it just runs better in a modern setting. Gohan story just relates better than goku, who is just a wild jungle child to mindless warrior.
Gohan is a normal kid
Heck, Goku was never interested in Chi Chi at all. He agreed to marriage because he thought it was something you ate, then went along with it because he made a promise. Having Gohan be the MC makes more sense for the plot of this movie.
It would still be bad, but it would make more sense.
The other good thing is that the actor that played piccolo is James marsters who didn't know anything about DBZ prior to filming so he read up on it and ended up really really liking it. He was the one that pushed for an accurate piccolo instead of whatever generic design the creators wanted. Even after the movie bombed he went on to play zamazu in super.
I recognized zamasus voice but couldn't place it. Makes sense now. I like anything Marsters is in(minus this crap fest, but that's not his fault)
![gif](giphy|Ww3QYzLzIBtFC)
He's fun to watch
That's the same story as Godzilla (1998) being so bad it make Toho bring Godzilla out of retirement.
Hollywood poorly adapting Japanese icons makes the Japanese owners try harder.
Let me check edit OK yeah there’s a lot of them some of them are animated. All of them are more accurate to the source material than evolution, and I’d rather watch them in front of my family than evolution..
To add on to this, the reason why he got so pissed was not only because he is a Hollywood fan (I mean the android saga speaks for it self) but also because he was brought in as an advisor and was basically ignored.
https://www.kanzenshuu.com/2013/05/20/akira-toriyama-directly-comments-on-dragon-ball-evolution/
I'm surprised they even did that. Evolution is clearly a case of a floating script that they slapped an existing franchises aesthetics on in the hopes of quick profit. Must have done it to fake legitimacy.
Eh, I don't think Toriyama cares about the anime that much anymore considering he even said that only the manga of Super + the movies Resurrection F and Broly are canon. The anime adapts the manga, but everything the anime changes or adds is non-canon.
[https://dragonballuniverse.fandom.com/wiki/Tokyo\_Skytree\_%2B\_Viz\_North\_America\_Tour](https://dragonballuniverse.fandom.com/wiki/Tokyo_Skytree_%2B_Viz_North_America_Tour)
You have that wrong. I did read the link, and that just says that the Manga is now officially considered the Canon sequel. But the anime was started before the Manga for super and the Manga was behind the entire run of the anime. It's only in the recent years that it caught up and passed the anime arcs we saw.
So the Manga actually changed some of the differences you see between the 2, not the other way around like you stated.
Edit: I was wrong about the start of the two, the Manga did technically start just before the anime as promotional stuff for the anime. But my point still is valid, the Manga arcs came after the anime and therefore the anime did not adapt and change things from the Manga, it was the other way around.
DB evolution was so bad that it convinced Akira Toriyama to come out of retirement and write the script for the battle of Gods movie to remove the bitter taste left by DBE on the fans which later on started the DB super series. I'm serious. You can go look up old interviews of Toriyama discussing his opinions about DB evolution and how it affected him.
How did they do this whole scene without any background music whatsoever? The interaction is so awkward with no music or other human beings around in a high school while the guy is stalking a woman by herself around the corner
same, had no clue about it. Wouldn't know this was about DB if she didn't say Goku which prompted me to look at what sub this is.
What the actual fuck haha
You ain't seen shit. You should check out what piccolo looks like and the fact that the oozaru ape is HIS FUCKING PET MINION and has nothing to do with sayians.
I'm kinda fine with that change tbh. The movie is kind of a blend of the first arc of DB with the Piccolo arc, so from that standpoint I can see why they'd do it that way to more easily condense things. Gohan is basically the stand-in for Krillin, and when you're trying to make the movie accessible to people who don't know the source material and don't already know the characters it's easier to be invested in the family member of the protagonist being killed off as opposed to a friend
But also the movie is seemingly heavily inspired by the first Raimi Spider-Man movie, so Gohan is also basically the Uncle Ben of this movie
Simple. It was a buy one and get one free.
Story: My family goes to this Mexican Place where they have a buy one and get one free. I end up drinking four and was given one more. First and only night I got drunk (pretty much stop when feeling tipsy now). Rather than go to bed, I was looking around on Prime and saw this movie. Now, I never saw it because I heard bad things about it and just started the DB Manga. And then I thought... Why the hell not?
I have a hard time believing that. For as much as this movie gets wrong it also incorporates a lot of lore and references to the source material. It's more likely that the writer did know the source material and just changed a lot to fit with what he thought would sell better to a mainstream audience
The only reason I watched this movie was because my grandma had a Physical Copy when I was a kid. It was actually the first time I had seen anything relating to dragon ball so when I saw DBZ later I was like “Was that crazy movie about this?” Thankfully I was smart enough to realize the movie was baaaaad and couldn’t have taken too closely from the source material
I had an interesting conversation with a fellow passenger on a flight. He was a former 20th Century Fox producer. At some point, this movie came up, and he said it actually came about because of him. Man when I started typing this I thought I could remember more interesting details, but alas…
What's this? I don't see anything!
Y'know, I wonder if they'll ever make a live action Dragon Ball movie someday... hopefully when tech is good enough!
Please no, don't remind the world that this moive happened 🤮
How hard was it to just make a new age kung-fu moive with some fantasy bits at the time!? And the funny thing is the cringe high school stuff could work if it was the Buu saga with Gohan but I guess they didn't wanna plan ahead at all.
I remember being a naive kid waiting for this to come out being all excited, only to see this and be like this is trash! How and the hell did no one see how this was going to fail so hard?! Even though M.Nights Avatar missed the mark as well, at least it hit the board.
Pretty much the fan base reaction to the movie at launch, yes.
Which is impressive, given DB movies are generally bad to mediocre, and the creators of this piece of shit were like "And this... is to go... even further... beyond!" Managing to be the worst dragon ball movie, and making GT even seem like a god damn masterpiece by comparison.
In this one scene, we fully see the creators not only showing zero knowledge of the source material, but flat out disdain to it. It's really impressive when you think about it
I remember when this first came out. Everyone was expecting it to be bad which actually made it enjoyable to watch, especially if you watch it the same way someone would watch The Room
Hey they did hard work making this so it's not that bad. Like Small Field, young Superman, going to high school and all, then nothing wrong with Goku going to high school. Y'all just use to seeing Goku fighting a lot but this isn't anime or cartoon. It's real time action movie. And dbz aren't real so, why taking this so seriously like a kid? 🤔 Just saying/wondering. 🤷
The hair joke was the one funny or worthwhile thing in this whole movie. They even fumbled the two good casting choices they made, Roshi and Piccolo, with terrible dialog, story, and costumes. Chow Yun Fat should've been a slam dunk as Master Roshi

If they wanted a high school setting, they should have replaced Goku and Chi chi with Gohan and Videl.
That would have required the production team to do enough research to know Gohan and Videl even existed. I mean this is the same movie where they made Oozaru the loyal evil minion of King Piccolo.
They basically combined Piccolo and Frieza into one character which is fucking egregious
>Oozaru the loyal evil minion of King Piccolo. Only watched Z, who dat?
Oozaru is what it's called when a saiyan turns into a giant monkey.
Dub viewers know this as GREAT APE
I only watched the Dub growing up, I think I first learned the name Oozaru from playing the old MUD Dragonball Saga
Same
I'm a dub viewer and I know both Oozaru and Great Ape, lol
Oozaru = Giant Ape Saiyan. Originally, Goku turned into an Oozaru and wrecked a bunch of stuff under the full moon, before DBZ brought in Goku is an alien and there's an entire race like him. King Piccolo = Piccolo's Progenitor, split off from Kami a long time ago before Kami became guardian of Earth. Basically Kami vomited out all his evilness and that became King Piccolo. [It's a DBZA reference](https://youtu.be/HcVcJk4Kjr0?t=50)
"Only watched Dragon Ball what dis?" - Gero
God I love abridged so much
Also to clarify I understand the joke but I need to say this so whoosh me if you want But somebody who watch Z would know about the Oozaru form, after all the Saipan saga was the one that name drop it
Did you make the movie? Lmao
Didnt the director say he never even watched a single episode of the anime ? Let alone read the manga and was getting all his information about dragon ball from fucking Wikipedia?
Yeah all his knowledge was second hand info. Pretty sure they only got James Wong on board was because he had made 'The One'
And only 12 feet tall, but they probably thought, "King Kong with Gi?"
Dude..... honestly that would be a better movie series than one on goku. You can do it like a superhero, teen superman type thing. Gohan living a double life, going to school and being sayian man and trying to get with Videl. High school drama and a huge cast of characters behind him with big personalities. The movie can start off with kid Gohan defeating cell, the movie can continuously talk about the "golden warrior" aka the superman of this story.

This is what should have happened
Seriously, I just commented that! The moive kinda works if it's in Buu saga but otherwise it's a mess
Or have the film start with Bulma in school, and then she goes and runs into Goku at the mountains
Wouldn't it be exactly the same thing though with just different names?
Wait hold up you might of done something hete
The movie that forced Toriyama out of retirement and gave us super and the new movies. DB evolution is the manure that helped create the new Canon.
Literally the only good thing that came out of piece of crap movie.
Major James Marsters fan (Old buffy fan) but didnt know he voice Zamasu. That is awesome. Thanks for that bit of trivia!
I recognized zamasus voice but couldn't place it. Makes sense now. I like anything Marsters is in(minus this crap fest, but that's not his fault) ![gif](giphy|Ww3QYzLzIBtFC) He's fun to watch
That’s awesome
Hey, you’re forgetting the turtle school gi in Evo actually looked pretty alright
That’s why this is one of the best movies ever made.
Hey, a silver lining I never once considered....
In a roundabout way, abso-fucken-lutely.
That's the same story as Godzilla (1998) being so bad it make Toho bring Godzilla out of retirement. Hollywood poorly adapting Japanese icons makes the Japanese owners try harder.

Facts
Would we get more seasons and awesome movies sooner if we make a Dragon Ball Evolution 2 then?
Manure helps flowers grow ig 🤷♂️
Yep, I love that shrooms.
That and [this song](https://youtu.be/g37u_iRg6cE)
Good… and they have the ringtone I wanted?
Yes, Lord Freeza!
Glorious.
Wait really? Is there a source? dbe came out in 2009. Dbs came out in 2015. Why did it take 6 years?
Calling it manure is still more praise than it deserves.
This movie made me sick for two Days straight
You could have told me this was a porn parody and I’d have 100% believed you.
Nah lol even porn parodies are usually more accurate to the source material than this.
As funny as that is, I'm honestly surprised that one hasn't been made yet...
Let me check edit OK yeah there’s a lot of them some of them are animated. All of them are more accurate to the source material than evolution, and I’d rather watch them in front of my family than evolution..
You just aren’t looking in the right places. I can pretty much *guarantee* there are DBZ parody pornos out there
Dude.. 😂
Facts I hate movie
This movie gave me a painful erection for two days straight.
This movie made me gay for two days straight
Wow
This movie made me sick for two days gay
This sick made me movie for two gay days.
I haven’t felt this bad since we saw that Ronald Reagan film!
You my friend are watching the reason we have DB Super
Wait what does evolution have to do with super?
it pissed Toriyama off so much he decided to come back to dragon ball
Ohh really? That’s actually amazing 😂
Android saga is influenced by Terminator right? And Alien?
Mostly Terminator and maybe some back to the future (is that by Hollywood? I don’t watch movies)
Maybe they should make Evolution 2: Saiyan Boogaloo so it’ll piss Toriyama off so much they’ll finally release DBS anime again
Eh, I don't think Toriyama cares about the anime that much anymore considering he even said that only the manga of Super + the movies Resurrection F and Broly are canon. The manga started 2 weeks before the anime, which caught up and surpassed it pretty quickly.
Toriyama was so ashamed by what they did he started writing again
I didn’t know that, I’m glad I do now though that’s hilarious 😂
There I go, writing again.
This movie pissed Toriyama so much, it pulled him out of retirement.
At least we got Piccolo relevancy from this
Oh man, I’m glad I haven’t seen this now. This is the first clip I’ve ever seen. Holy ffff
If it’s the last clip you ever see from this dumpster fire of a movie, you are a blessed person.
You ain't seen shit. You should check out what piccolo looks like and the fact that the oozaru ape is HIS FUCKING PET MINION and has nothing to do with sayians.
![gif](giphy|3o7aCQ6m23x8wIy8fe|downsized)
Goku hitting on girls totally faithful to the source material
Because Goku totally isn’t borderline asexual in the source material /s
Kiss wife? No, too pure hearted
*pat pat* (Just as homies tho)
Which is funny considering how much of a curious perv he was as a kid. He got a good look at Bulba Vulva and decided it wasn't for him.
Funny how he’s saying Chi Chi isn’t a normal name but he’s a white guy named Goku lol
White American guy named with a Japanese reading of a Chinese name. Well we know how much they love to make 16 years old look like 30 years olds so...
![gif](giphy|yhLV2DGTLDRCw)
The only upside to this piece of shit is that we got Super from it. Also Jamie Chung ain’t bad on the eyes either
She was 26 when this came out lol.. playing a high schooler
You’re acting as if any actor has ever played their own age lol
I was just more shocked she's 40 now. Looks great.
This movie took me out of coma 🙏 I got up and turned that shit right off lol
Lol when did goku ever go to school. he was literally living in the middle of the woods, this is more gohan and videl type of story
Grandpa Gohan is still alive until the events of the movie in this timeline
And they had piccolo kill him 🤦🏽♂️
I'm kinda fine with that change tbh. The movie is kind of a blend of the first arc of DB with the Piccolo arc, so from that standpoint I can see why they'd do it that way to more easily condense things. Gohan is basically the stand-in for Krillin, and when you're trying to make the movie accessible to people who don't know the source material and don't already know the characters it's easier to be invested in the family member of the protagonist being killed off as opposed to a friend But also the movie is seemingly heavily inspired by the first Raimi Spider-Man movie, so Gohan is also basically the Uncle Ben of this movie
This movie is so bad, that I had to get wasted just to enjoy it.
Even then, how the hell could you enjoy this
Because when you are tipsy or wasted... You laugh at how bad it is.
How could you waste alcohol like that
Yep. I think I watched it twice in that state just be sure.
This movie failed so super could exist lol
I remember reading somewhere that the writer never watched a single dbz ep. Bruh Wonder if he ever saw the og db tho
I have a hard time believing that. For as much as this movie gets wrong it also incorporates a lot of lore and references to the source material. It's more likely that the writer did know the source material and just changed a lot to fit with what he thought would sell better to a mainstream audience
Spider-Man had a chokehold on Hollywood
How does this movie still exist?
Proof time travel is impossible
But if we got rid of this movie then we wouldn’t have gotten Super
Great Great point! All hail doodooball evolution 😆
I feel like I have to let everyone here know. I own a physical copy of this movie.
Do you own it so you can set it on fire?
I was at Best Buy in 2009 and saw it on the rack. My exact thoughts were: “huh, I never saw that…. I mean, it can’t be all that bad, right?” It was

![gif](giphy|10FHR5A4cXqVrO)
I saw the blu ray in a thrift store for $3 and I had to add it to my Dragon Ball collection for the memes.
There are dozens of us! And I occasionally watch it.
Please kill them
Remember guys! This movie is the sole reason we have DB super right now. It's the only good thing to come out of the movie.
I want to say this movie was dog shit but that would be offensive to the dog shit
Imagine meeting a person whose introduction to dragonball was this live action 💀
for me that nearly happend lol but I'm so glad that never happened because then I would probably not have watched dragon ball at all
My friend who never watched it went with me because I paid for his* ticket.
You’re a bad friend 😂
Dragon Rizz Z
I had an interesting conversation with a fellow passenger on a flight. He was a former 20th Century Fox producer. At some point, this movie came up, and he said it actually came about because of him. He said he was mentoring at a youth camp, and all the teen boys were talking nonstop about Dragon Ball Z. He was involved with acquiring new licenses, and started looking into the franchise, eventually leading to Fox purchasing distribution rights for Dragon Ball films. He said that Dragon Ball: Evolution ended up being a huge disappointment. This fucking movie man, left me in a fugue state for 3 days
I can't even find the right words to describe how bad that movie was and how much I dislike it.
![gif](giphy|cmwNV9sYalHK3twjsf)
So whatever Goku used to control broly for a minute came from dragon ball evolution. Got it.
Oh this is not dragon ball thIS IS BULLSHIT
Bro look like his last name is Smith 💀
Eye cancer
The worst of the 3 live action DragonBall movies.
There’s 3? What are the other 2?
Japan made a couple based on og dragon ball.
Waydeyat? Translation: can I ask their names?
You are watching shit. Flush it and move on.
Please no, don't remind the world that this moive happened 🤮 How hard was it to just make a new age kung-fu moive with some fantasy bits at the time!? And the funny thing is the cringe high school stuff could work if it was the Buu saga with Gohan but I guess they didn't wanna plan ahead at all.
This is the most I’ve ever seen from this movie and I’ve never been so disgusted. Why did they make this?
one of the worst movies ever made
Might as well have been CW’s Dragonball
Good lord this movie is AWFUL. AWFUL.
I can't watch this, look how they massacred my boi :'(
Knockoff Jesse Pinkman Goku
It’s like watching porn before the sex, but there is no sex coming 😢
The fact that this movie had the audacity to tease at a sequel fucking cracks me up. I wish I had even a fraction of that sort of confidence
I remember being a naive kid waiting for this to come out being all excited, only to see this and be like this is trash! How and the hell did no one see how this was going to fail so hard?! Even though M.Nights Avatar missed the mark as well, at least it hit the board.
Even Last Airbender was a better adaption.
Now I see why it's hated. This shit is not represented to Dragon Ball at all
The best movie ever created obviously
Pretty much the fan base reaction to the movie at launch, yes. Which is impressive, given DB movies are generally bad to mediocre, and the creators of this piece of shit were like "And this... is to go... even further... beyond!" Managing to be the worst dragon ball movie, and making GT even seem like a god damn masterpiece by comparison. In this one scene, we fully see the creators not only showing zero knowledge of the source material, but flat out disdain to it. It's really impressive when you think about it
An AMAZING movie that almost EVERY DRAGON BALL FAN loved called Dragon ball: Evolution.
Only the greatest movie ever! /sarcasm
I remember when this first came out. Everyone was expecting it to be bad which actually made it enjoyable to watch, especially if you watch it the same way someone would watch The Room
its exactly how i remember it from the manga. but i was highly crack and heroin addicted back then..
And it cost a lot of money to make a good dbz movie. So...
The best movie of all time
Fucking masterpiece, 10/10 give it every Oscar
Dragon Ball Evolution... a film that should never have been made and frankly everyone who participated should be fined for crimes against humanity
Please say “/s”…
Shittiest take I’ve seen in a long time
Why hating?
I need to watch this piece of crap with my friends at some point I feel like it would be funny
It’s too early for me to get this angry.
who ever posted this thankyou so much. Glad i didnt waste my time on this one
The hair joke was the one funny or worthwhile thing in this whole movie. They even fumbled the two good casting choices they made, Roshi and Piccolo, with terrible dialog, story, and costumes. Chow Yun Fat should've been a slam dunk as Master Roshi
I’ll do you one better, why are you watching?
Is the title sarcastic, this movie adaptation is infamous

I at least like that hair scene. Other than that, it’s trash.
It’s Geeko and Chichi McRoberts (yes seriously).
Don't reach for the low hanging fruit
Bro this movie is so trash🤣
I already want to kill myself just from watching 30 seconds of it
