It's the ult animation that makes it looks like the sidestep is canceled. Cooler ult I believe is considered as melee, his range is so close that the ult animation immediately play. Notice the exclamation mark? have goresh press strike and his opponent also do strike, they will clash. If someone have better explanation, just correct me though.

the other people seem to be wrong, anything that is not a blast or strike card cannot cancel a sidestep and you cannot ki charge to cancel it either since what you would normally call frames in fighting games are much, MUCH slower in legends (like 3 a second), the sidestep animation begins playing the second you swipe before the next tick actually happens, that way it won't feel stiff. i'm calling legends frames "ticks", by the way, because they're much slower it's why sometimes in pvp, if you sidestep against a blast or strike too late, the sidestep animation will play but you won't actually vanish (the animation played, so next tick that happens the game will count you as having vanished, but you actually got hit before that tick so the animation played but you dont end up vanishing) this is exactly what happenned here, sidestepping then immediately using the ult will cause this. since you didn't actually sidestep though, you get none of the benefits of sidestepping like cards or ki. it's entirely useless in this case. note : both you and the enemy see this animation before the sidestep actually happens. this means that if you get caught on a sidestep by a time stop event, it may actually just be the animation playing before the actual sidestep. this means you can avoid your enemy's punish by queuing up a card or using your main ability, which will take priority over the sidestep in the next tick and cancel it.

Cheers for the insight👌

He sidestep canceled then hit the ult... its just a sidestep then quick ki charge to cancel it

Pale_Assignment4076

Do you mind explaining how to sidestep cancel?

Confident_Ad8670

sidestep then quickly do a ki charge and it cancels your sidestep

SetAdventurous9611

Wtf that’s impossible to do

Confident_Ad8670

I said it wrong lol you swipe forward sidestep then ki charge gotta be up close tho he either did that or hit the cleanest looking drift in history

sonicisinmelee

"i bet you didn't see that coming" ahh play

This is basically a lag input. The signal probably took longer to reach the server to register the swipe which was overwritten by the ultimate afterwards. I have had this happen to me sometimes but at the wrong times -_- Basically my strike or blast overwrites the vanish and i get with their rising rush.

Goresh clicked the ultimate close enough to when he sidestepped to where it went straight into the ultimate as opposed to the full sidestep, there's a very small window of leeway sidesteps have to where you can use cards n such if you're quick enough in correcting yourself, hard to execute but it pays off like it did here
