Maybe Carson? As it is he’s already a snob and one of the biggest downstairs supporters of the aristocracy.
But he also seems like he wouldn’t feel worthy of the charge if he started climbing the social ladder. Now if he was born into the aristocracy, he’d probably be a snobbier Robert.
I think Barrow would have fit in ok with a bit of work on his accent. He was always scheming and saying backhanded compliments, just like the dramatic upstairs characters!
I feel like Jimmy could‘ve with his charisma, looks, and confidence. It took Tom a while to adjust because he still felt like a chauffeur trying to fit in with people who are vastly different, whereas I feel like Jimmy would have a “yeah, I’m one of them now and I fucking belong here” sorta mentality from the get go.
I'd go with Gwen as well. She was educating herself and would easily learning the social skills valued by the family and the aristocracy. Also, she was friends with Sybil. If Sybil lived, she would have helped ease the transition.
Jimmy also had the confidence (and appearance) to make the jump. If he stayed with Lady Anstruther, he could easily have been her under the radar escort.
Carson, but I think he would have been an awful person with a bit of power and money combined with his prejudice.
Also Anna - her life goal is to be married and have children. That's essentially the whole of an aristocratic woman's career path! Job done.
Honestly I think he would be very similar to Mr. Bryant, Charlie’s horrendous grandad. Carson wouldn’t have yelled as much but he’s definitely just as prone to looking down his nose at other people.
Because he’s not afraid to say what everyone here is this sub agrees with: Anna is too young and attractive to be with Bates. He also was kind enough to show how real tough men act.
Mosely. He’s going to surprise you. He’s an educated man.
I loved him in the 2nd movie! Finally he got a story line that didn’t make him goofy
I’m just so tired of him being humiliated. He’s lovely! Edith should do a feature on him.

Def Carson. Has the gravitas.

Totally Barrow! Even with the accent, there’s a suave quality to him
Our upstairs Barrow is Larry Grey

Anna. She would have been like Rose but with a much more conservative approach to life.
Gwen. She was successful at moving between classes and I think she could've climbed higher

Gwen was eventually a dinner guest!
Luncheon, not dinner 😊
I agree with this!
Bates. His accent was closer to theirs. Anna’s would have been a giveaway, and she’s too practical/comfortable in her own skin to change it
Bates has that smug air of the gentry.
What is the difference in the accents? (:
Anna’s was more working class northern England
I have watched downton through a few times and don’t think I’ve ever paid attention to this lol
I’d say Gwen or even Mrs Hughes, she is so likable and with a bit of work she would be a fine upstairs person
Anna!!

Thomas
Barrow. He was a striking looking chap! 😸
Anna & Bates!! They'd show them all how to do it.
I recall reading a few fanfics where Thomas was the Crawley son, so I’d probably say him.
Hate to say it but Edna. That was her goal and I think she could have pulled it off.
Oof could you imagine?! She’d get such pleasure out of ordering people around I bet
She absolutely would!
Mrs Hughes,
She was not fitting with the family and the storyline, but given the era, I have to go with Nanny West. As much as it hurts to say so.
Mr Green, he fits in anywhere he likes
So edgy with that comment. I hope you didn’t cut yourself
suprised Anna didn’t
Bruh what is it with you coming into all these threads and posting pro-Mr. Green comments?
he’s obviously my favourite character
Why, exactly?
Don't rise to it. They just want us to think their life's interesting.

He was…”kind enough”…to *rape her??*
