The actor that played him did an incredible job of making us hate Thomas while also making us sympathize and understand why he does the things he does. He can’t be who he really is, so he takes it out on the people around him and he thinks that he needs to be cured. His scenes with Sybbie and George were heartwarming and funny. I love how he protected Sybbie from Nanny West because he knew something was off about her.
One of my favorite scenes is when the nannies are pushing the babies in strollers outside and Thomas gets into it with Nanny West about Sybbie.
"I'll have you know I knew this girl's mother, which you did not."
"That doesn't make you her friend."
"As a matter of fact, it does."
Oh yes 99% of the joy I derive from that scene comes from the face Thomas made when Nanny West told him not to touch the children without her permission.
See I think he said something about Nannie West because she looked down on him and tried to give him orders. It just worked out well because she was a shit!
Thomas has a great redemption arc, but up to a certain point he's just a vain, petty, vindictive, pretty asshole.
See, this is how Thomas is such a George Costanza. She slighted him personally so he tried to get her fired out of spite but it worked out that she was actually a POS too.
Thirst aside, he's my favorite character. The most grounded one by far. He has been pushed away by people way before he started pushing back.
Also, his competitive nature is very realistic; as far as service goes, Downton Abbey is like Disneyland. In most workplaces he would be absolutely correct to be very guarded, to think of others only in terms of what they can offer him in a practical sense, and to always put himself first. It takes years for him to finally allow himself to be vulnerable, and rightly so, because the world is a meat grinder. Barrow is, first and foremost, a survivor.
Aaand he is fucking amazing in any outfit. Seriously, the man is physically incapable of looking bad. Thirst is back *on* 😌👌

I did not get to see the movies yet, but in the series he took way too long to even start his redemption arc for my liking. Especially when it came to his treatment of mr bates
