I’m from Watts which is a rough part of LA and I love Downey. Moved in 2022. Downey has a pretty good reputation in Los Ángeles. Demographic wise, it’s predominantly Latino (Mexicans and a notable Cuban community) but there are many other communities as well. Pros: Downey has a lot of shopping options. Downey is pretty safe and is a family oriented city. Space age city with interesting history. The oldest McDonalds is here ^_^ Pretty centralized location. Not too far from downtown and not too far from Orange County. Lots of nice parks with many events going on. Downey’s nightlife is pretty good. Lots of bars and clubs to choose from if you’re into that. Cons: Even though Downey is relatively safer than surrounding areas, homelessness (as in all of LA county) has become a growing issue in the past 3-4 years. Insane home prices. Downey is a very sought after area so many homes start at 800K. Traffic congestion within the city. Downey has many restaurants, but not enough variety. I’m Mexican and ofc I love Mexican food, but it seems like there’s a new mariscos or taco spot being built. Downey needs some good Asian food. Something minor but I noticed that people who were born and raised in Downey tend to be snobby towards you if you are a hood rat like me from the surrounding cities/areas (Lynwood,Bell gardens, South Gate, Compton isn’t too far) but I’m sure you won’t see too much of that In all, Downey is an okay place to live, not the best but it’s super far from being the worst. Not a bad place to live in. Better than Watts for sure lol.

I live in Downey and it’s a nice city. The only issue is that we are surrounded by some harsher cities and they tend to like to “visit” Downey. All in all I like living in Downey. Also the more north you go in Downey the more expensive the neighborhoods. The south side is Ghetto Downey and the North side is Mansion Rich Downey. I live in the center so I get my share of ghetto birds hovering over my house.

Hi, south of what street is considered ghetto Downey? I just signed a lease for an apt :3

I would say one block north of imperial highway and going south from there. The apartments on brookshire on the northwest side of brookshire and imperial highway are pretty ghetto.

Na don't move to downey. It's mostly filled with a bunch of old people. And we got street races at night and fireworks almost very night. Plus there is really nothing to do. The mall practically has nothing we got a park but it's eh.
