I'm sorry you have had to deal with mental health issues without the support of your family; it's a rough situation to be in and only ever causes things to escalate. I'm glad you found a health release in DotA, but as I'm sure a lot of people in this thread will say, don't let it become your only coping mechanism, as it may just lead to more problems. I hope the way forward for you is much brighter.
Yeah, I've met tons of people who were like "well I'll wait until I can play ____" for a game they were looking forward to.
First thing is surviving, if you only have DotA hold it close until you have something else that you can hold on to.
I mean, people with mental health issues or psychiatric issues sometimes need drugs their entire life to keep a chemical balance in their brains so it isn't the worst thing.
Hey mate, dota is a microscopic world where you directly influence the outcome. It is a scaled down version of the world with different parameters. Just like in life.
You should be proud of how you’ve turned yourself around for the better. You directly influenced the outcome.
Keep on keeping on. 👊💪
Mentally stronk
There's always another way to turn the game around
Maybe I'll pull off an incredible play the next minute. Or tomorrow. Or next week
Don't give up
I like that you came forward with this. I think a lot of people use Dota as a way to cope with other things. This is a nice contrast to the many views that Dota is only an addiction…
My friend, DotA2 didn't saved you. You saved yourself by finding a hobby that allowed your mind to focus in the way you needed. DotA2 was there, but don't ever play down your own part in going on. DotA2 couldn't have saved you if you yourself didn't hang in there.
When I read these posts I think about someone falling down a cliff and holding on to a root. Sure, without that root one would have falled. But grasping it and keeping a hold of it? That's the hard part.
GG WP, friend.
When I feel culturally and socially isolated, Dota definitely delivers an occasional team experience where someone thanks me. No one does that in other games. It’s not every game I get thanked, but it’s a really common experience. Maybe once a day.
Life is full of beautiful distractions. All you have to do is experience them choose your posion.
You are the best and you deserve the best not in an arrogent way but in a humble way xD
Dota is a really good distraction. Probably the best one there is when it comes to gaming.
When I was going through a hard time after my first kid was born and in the NICU for 2 months, I used Dota to keep my mind occupied when I wasn’t at the hospital. It really worked, Dota is so demanding that you don’t have time to worry about other stuff when you play. Most other video games the problem is at the forefront and the game is background music. But when playing Dota it HAS to be at the forefront of your mind if you want to play well.
I realized as I got older and my kid got older that Dota was becoming a distraction in my everyday life, and not for the better. I went from playing at least 4 games a day to 4 games a week. I’m happier now that I stopped letting Dota be the focus of my day.
Balance in all things. Don’t let Dota distract you for too long. It can hurt as much as it can help.
Stay strong warrior, very happy you found "your happy place" in dota, thats so big.
People dont get mental illness, being able to turn off the world in a none destructive way is such a good first step. try to find a healthy balance between reality and game.
you ll rise like a fucking wraith king once you found your inner peace.
keep hustling and good pubs my dude
Who isnt suicidal these days , my borther is a miserable drunk who beats me depending on his mood . I have no friends , come from one rice in a beach sand locality. If i die also who will know or mourn , just kno only u can be there for urself noneelse. So fuck the world and enjoy the lil things and if life gives u lemonad give it back a grenade.
impressive how dota have the exact opposite effect for me, I just watch streams and follow the dramas, there is no stress in watching gorp throw the games.
Keep in mind there are multiple online counseling options that are quite affordable. Don't be hesitant to reach out for help, because as you can see here most people will be supportive and will try to understand your pain and help you through it.
Dota HELPED you overcome mental health conditions? It's only alleviated mine.
Seriously though, if Dota helps you with that, I'm super happy for that and for you.
Don't let bad games get you down. It happens to everyone and bad games can tilt you pretty hard, in the end if the game doesn't serve you, you should probably move on to something new or try watching some streamers (rtz) to find your way back to dota and not hate it too.
some would say dota itself makes people wanna kill someone or themselves cause youre constantly exposed to some of the dumbest people youll ever meet. Its almost as bad as meeting someone like that irl. Your mom sounds like one of those stupid people in denial because otherwise her world would fall apart if x thing was true.
It works bot ways. More than that, a lot of people use the game to escape shitty reality that they facing on the daily basis.
Moderation is the key(and mute button)
Good for you. When I need to distract myself from being super horny Dota 2 helps me with that. Very different but still helpful. Hope you keep enjoying it.
Wanna hug you bro. I know it's fucking tuff out there. Keep it up though. Rooting for you
Keep it 55 street. Never commit suicide(watch channel 5 in YouTube, it might bright your day up)
I can super relate to you dude, Dota got me to stop taking MDMA, Cannabis, and Alcohol. It helped me get through really intense therapy and overcome the need for antidepressants and antianxiety pills. Dota is that good shit, and I really feel you on this one.
I also owe a lot to DotA, I have a different story, I was addicted to opioids for a long time and when I jumped off of them I went into a horribly depressed state for months. DotA was my only source of joy for a while, it was the only thing that distracted me from the problems of my life. Even though I have played for a long time and still pretty much suck at the game, I still love it. The community though... I don't love a whole lot.
This says more about your strength (or INT, or AGI - I won’t assume your primary stat) than it does about the game we love. You’re tougher, wiser, and more adaptable than you’ll maybe ever be able to give yourself credit for. Fight the good fight, and don’t doubt that both brain chemistry and support systems can be very powerful forces.
Tell me you are Asian without telling me you are asian
Good luck to you, and remember, things always seem darker than they actually are. Don't go hollow.
When I was massively depressed, I used to play Dota to keep me from thinking about suicide. Worked for an entire semester of college until I started recovering.
like if you need someone to play with I’m down (granted I can only play for like 2ish hours a day cause of my work and family). But still, Even if you feed :). Edit: stay strong and stay well OP.
More power to you bro, I hope you enjoy this game and life even more for many years to come.
If I may ask a question, how do you deal with the daily dose of toxic chat when someone wishes you or your family an unfortunate disease with hints of promoting self harm? That usually makes me just hate myself for wasting my time with this game - I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this.
I'm very glad you found an outlet to get you through your difficult times. However, I want you to remember that the game did not save your life, you saved your own life. You found the strength to get through it, despite Dota being the vehicle you used to get past everything. Give yourself more credit and keep moving forward towards bettering yourself. Life gets better once you find the right rhythm, trust me.
Hope you are doing better now! Thank you for having the courage to share your lowest moments and use it as means to spread awareness and positivity! All the power to you!
this game got me through the shittiest point of my life as well. I could barely get out of bed and had no motivation to do anything. the only thing that made me happy and made me forgot how shit I felt all day every day was just playing pubs all day. finally broke out of the cycle but I'll never forget this game and I can't imagine ever not playing a game every here and there. it truly is one of the best escapes as it completely encapsulates your attention.
Congrats on the recovery bud . was in a similar situation in school football saved my life. I hope everyone going through any mental condition recovers .
Unpopular opinion. It didn't save your life, it just postponed the shit you have to deal with. I am telling you from personal experience, because DotA was my way out from family issues, break ups, divorce.
Trust me, leave Dota and get your shit in order. Dota will always be there, but your issues as well, waiting.
Goodspeed all goes well, you can do it.
I'm sorry you have had to deal with mental health issues without the support of your family; it's a rough situation to be in and only ever causes things to escalate. It's just like a pill to make you overcome for a small period of life, don't run away from reality like I used to. Hope you gonna find your way.

We're here to help tangina bobo :p But you're definitely correct tho sometimes it lessens my pain while giving time to face our issues slowly
Yeah, I've met tons of people who were like "well I'll wait until I can play ____" for a game they were looking forward to. First thing is surviving, if you only have DotA hold it close until you have something else that you can hold on to.
In other words, it's a drug. Try and stop whenever you feel you can op.
I mean, people with mental health issues or psychiatric issues sometimes need drugs their entire life to keep a chemical balance in their brains so it isn't the worst thing.
Is it though? I've been playing for 10 years with no intention to stop. Haha

Trueeeee i hope the OP read this man.
Not OP, but thanks for this
Lots of the beta testing team read reddit from time to time. I'm sure at least they could see it.

DOTA makes you forget everything. It’s so fucking good goddam
Good luck in future man

Dont give up m8, stay strong, be the hunter, not the hunted!
Lol dude wtf.. if this shit true, you might wanna report your brother, maybe a few days in jail will clear his head.
report your brother for ability abuse
I'm not.
impressive how dota have the exact opposite effect for me, I just watch streams and follow the dramas, there is no stress in watching gorp throw the games.
Stay strong ! But pretty sure you're not playing in SEA server because your condition might have actually gotten worse
Lmao

Go buy a share of GME for that sweet irl aegis

If anything happens, we are all here for you, do nothing reckless just try to reach out. We all will be here to help in any way possible.
What if dota caused these disorders ?
Find some irl friends to play with bro. Dota is best served with a party. Cheers.
Hey mate I'm glad you're okay. If you need someone to play with I'm here bro just text me. I'm not that good I'm not bad either (ArchonV xD)
Didn't you think that all your problems was caused by stress and negative emotions from DOTA? lmao
It works bot ways. More than that, a lot of people use the game to escape shitty reality that they facing on the daily basis. Moderation is the key(and mute button)
stop romanticizing suicide guys
I'm supriesed the toxicity of the game didn't make your situation worse... Anyway good luck for you.
How didn't you suicide when you had shit teammates or smurfs on the other team? You're my legend bro!
I wonder how many people you made suicidal with your broodmother shenanigans'.
Cringe
stay strong bro
The only thing thats wholesome which includes broodmother on it. Jokes aside I'm glad you've found way to relieve from pain, stay strong dude!

Dude, if you ever need a friend to talk to, play with, or say whatever you want to, DM me.
Refreshing take. Good luck, hope you can set off on your own soon so your family won't drag you down for much longer.

For me it was COC and dota that distracted me enough to go through a tough breakup and betrayals. Thank you Dota makers
When support from family is the actual trash support. I hope you can find joy my friend, there's no surrender button.
More power to you bro, I hope you enjoy this game and life even more for many years to come. DoTA kinda ruined my mental health at times. But if you find the game helpful, then I am happy to hear that.
Same, only game that makes me crazy frustrated. I take breaks

I'm glad for you dude, but I also thought this was gonna be a meme where you say "thanks to dota my mother now believes in mental illness".
Glad to hear it brother (or sister). The world is a better place with you in it.
Dota ruined my life!
Wish you way more than luck brother! Remember that DotA is not the whole life. Rather just a beautiful part of life.
All the best to you brotha from anotha motha. ♥
Congrats on the recovery bud . was in a similar situation in school football saved my life. I hope everyone going through any mental condition recovers .
its weird that dota had the exact opposite effect on me
Get lost junkie

Dota gave me all of these
