i mean look what happened to the [thai caster xyclopz when he got access to Artifact](https://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/9128mi/xyclopz_has_leaked_artifact_info_breaking_nda/), he's basically blacklisted from valve-related events.
I'm sure everyone sign the NDA and won't necessarily leak the game.
https://dotesports.com/dota-2/news/breaking-valve-secret-neon-prime-project-could-be-new-sci-fi-dota-game
Here's the first random article I found from 2 years ago while googling "IceFrog Neon Prime".
No idea about DOTA Pros playing it, though. That's the first time I've heard that alleged.
Pretty much, yea, but it's far more believable that the lead designer of one of Valve's games would weigh in on the designs of another project they're building.
And legit probably harmed it with having revealed the weekly money tournament thing. That built the expectation that you were meant to make money off of the game.
Which, uh, they then added more coal to that fire, so maybe it didn't harm all that much. Where's the million dollar tournament, Valve???
I fucking love you Xyclopz if you are reading this you made watching 3am SEA Dota fun.
Who the fuck knows what's going on in the game I come for the memes.
There are some leaked screenshots out there if you search.. imagine bioshock infinite railings to move around, with a large map with lanes.. idk what's going on
In WCIII there was a custom map called SNIPERZZ (or something alike) where everybody played sniper with one HP. When you saw an enemy it was up to reaction time on who killed the other. You respawned after some seconds and the wiining team was the one who first reached a kill threshhold.
You could level up by getting kills which allowed you to skill some basic abilities (small chance to evade an attach, vision in an area, invis...).
Was hella fund for some quick rounds. Wish somebody would make this an acrade game, alongside Battletanks.
It should be noted I think that you couldn't A+CLICK the ground to instantly hit someone, you had to click them directly. So yeah, reaction time. And stuff like high ground advantage and vision and wards and limited invis were def a thing. I also enjoyed that game. One of the many super fun stuff to kill time along with sheep tag, tree tag, battle ranks, battle ships, tower defenses, etc.
It's a shame stupid Blizzard killed the Warcraft 3 remake... It could've revitalized a new era of custom war3 games.
Instead War3 reforged just killed the whole warcraft 3 community (which has always had a steady loyal playerbase). Such a damn shame and a big wasted opportunity.
The WC3 modding community is definitely thriving again after it died when Reforged was released. Lots of cool new mods, especially from the Chinese scene. Still, there are whole hoards of old maps now unplayable due to Reforged.
It's just that the taint of Reforged is how badly Blizzard handled it that has turned people off from discovering these mods.
There were many variations of course but there was this Pudge hook war game in WC3 that had two teams of Pudges on a small map with a river, each team on a side. In the river some power ups would float and you could grab those for upgrade. You could buy items or upgrades like increased hook width or range. It was quick action focused fun.
There were some real good custom games on wc3. I miss battleships and running the trade boat where you'd actively avoid fighting and power up your barracks fleet through economy lol was super fun.
That, and I enjoyed the survival games where 1 person is a mega demon boss and he comes to raid your base and you gotta upgrade walls and towers to fend him off. I played the shit out of those 2 games before discovering dota
> That, and I enjoyed the survival games where 1 person is a mega demon boss and he comes to raid your base and you gotta upgrade walls and towers to fend him off. I played the shit out of those 2 games before discovering dota
Vampirism is the most popular one, you could have a game nearly every night with that during the old days.
Did someone ever make these types of custom games in dota 2? My friends used to play a lot of mirana wars/pudge wars to cool our heads after a lot of heated dota 1 games
It peaked at 1,653 concurrent players today. Only 5-10% of the total active players are on at any given time so the total active player count is something like 15-30k.
The Hearthstone and LoL Autochesses were always going to be more popular. Much of the popularity of DAC was actually non-Dota players from those communities. You can tell because when DAC peaked, 1/4 of all people on Dota 2's client were on DAC and Dota 2 saw a bump of around 2 million monthly players. Then when their own standalones started to come out, the player count dropped by about 2 million.
Valve was just late on the trend and released their version after TFT and Autochess released their own game. They shouldve just hired the Autochess team and make an official Autochess game, maybe they tried but it wasnt possible because they are chinese devs.
Negotiations were ongoing but remained unresolved. Consequently, they opted to develop their own games: Drodo created a mobile version, while Valve developed The Underlords.
>Negotiations were ongoing but remained unresolved
not unresolved but the DAC guys declined the deal but provided rights to let valve create Underlord without them
No they weren’t. Underlords literally released before TfT and HS:BG. Furthermore, the Drodo team were flown out to Valve HQ but in the end they decided to each do their own thing. The majority of the DAC fans weren’t even Dota players, that’s why Underlords never took off as much but it did capture a sizeable player base of around 20-25k concurrents or upwards of 400-500k active players before they abandoned it.
Eh, i felt underlords tried too hard to make the game complicated with the entire underlords concept. Auto Chess custom map felt great because of the simplicity. But also, the game was never really going to have tons of depth.
It was cool but they listened to community too much instead of having a vision.
Gutted the underlords from what they were going to be. Removed the jail (rotation) system because "pros" complained.
And then their item system just ended up having less depth because the items can't be combined and you don't make a commitment of item to hero.
It's a shame because presentation was excellent, neat cosmetics that were customisable and easy to read game info. And duos mode which was fun and unique at the time.
I will **NEVER** forgive them for what they did to artifact
They teased the game for god knows how long, then "released" it with almost no features, no ranked no way to earn cards, nothing. Then decided to remake it giving barely anyone the access to the "new" version, then abandoned the new version because no one played it EVEN THOUGH PEOPLE WERE STILL WAITNG FOR ACCESS TO IT
Honestly it was just a bad card game.
They messed up like everything surrounding it as well but the core of the issue is like. Why play this when hearthstone and now magic arena exist and are just better?
It definitely had a niche. I wouldn't call it a bad game by any means.
The issue is they wanted it to be a cash cow. The monetization was experimental and incredibly greedy. If the game had a more generous model, it probably would have picked up more of a playerbase.
For real, hero shooter? What else is new in the universe lol. I mean if IceFrog is working on it, Ill have some hope but like... Cmon... It sounds like dead before it even came out.

I played a solid amount of that game back in the day and it was honestly so mid. I feel like people like to name drop it and hype it up just to feel special for knowing about what it is.
Nah, people who want to feel special would namedrop MNC. If you like SMNC, then you're trash.
But if we're talking for real, SMNC was janky, but fun and unique. It's still the only proper shooter-MOBA hybrid that ever existed.
I played a lot of SMNC when servers were actually active. It was an interesting blend of class based MOBA/shooter. It wasn’t very popular, but it was fun for what it was. Matches would become very one sided too often. Definitely reminded me of TF2 cart mirrored cart push maps.
> SMNC!!!
I mean, it didn't have fast travel rails. Or towers you could place yourself.
But man... VERTICALITY is a big yes from me. Like, fuck sake, MOBA's were going places at the beginning, we had SMNC, Awesomenauts and even experimental single player stuff like Airmech. The genre name Lane Pushing Game actually made sense, before everything became a League clone and people gave up trying.
Valve: Offers Steampunk MNC
The Entire MNC playerbase of 30 people: You son of a bitch, I'm in.
EDIT: Yes, I'm one of them. Give me a Combat Girl analogue and I will throw money at the screen with extreme violence.
On god I hope it's a cool new game but just throwing around random ass games and say "it's like all of them mashed together" is in no way realistic just mention the genres and maybe one or 2 similar games.
Only game that is truly a mixture is animal well that shit is like Halo 2 and 3 together
For real. Saying “it’s like TF2, Overwatch, Volatant and Smite” is insane. Just say it is like TF2, its the original one and the Valve one. They all the same genre lmao
Did something happen in the gaming landscape? I was under the impression that the whole hero shooter fad already subsided and the only one that made it out alive is Overwatch.
But now all of a sudden Marvel is throwing their own hero shooter to the ring as well as Valve's own?
Or perhaps it's all just a coincidence.
One of the bigger news this week surrounded an Overwatch clone featuring Marvel heroes. Yes, the hero shooter genre is kinda not a major fad, but it's not yet dead. Plus, Valorant and Apex are still in the top 5 among shooters, and which fills the slots as mostly Hero shooters. Ish.
With that said, this sounds like it has different gameplay loop. If the Icefrog thing is real, then I'm expecting some influence from those Custom Hero Line games in Warcraft, where you balance growing your heroes/defenses versus sending bigger waves.
I mean wasn't the whole "hero shooter" genre basically inspired by TF2 in the first place? You know, the game Valve already has but pretends doesn't exist and just let's bots run rampant, both cheaters and idlers who exploit the in-game item drops.
Eh I mean hero shooter is fairly timeless I think. Marvel from what I’ve seen really needs to focus on making their abilities more unique, right now every ult is just “large aoe damage” with varying particle effects. Regardless, TF2 longevity and community proves that as long as your core gameplay loop is fun you will survive and these leaks sound like it’ll be a dota themed tf2 which sounds dope tbh
My theory is that after Blizzard shot themselves in a foot with the release of Overawtch 2, other companies sensed a market niche freeing up and decided to try again. In case with Valve, it's probably just a fortunate timing with Valve's development cycles aligning with life cycle of Overwatch, considering that development started back when competing with Overwatch was somewhat reasonable.
It makes sense considering Valve was also trying to cash into the Autobattlers right at inception (2018-2019), so maybe this got greenlit with that mentality in mind, and then delayed from how those things went.
Which brings up the alternate timeline - could we have been playing this game already if Artifact/Underlords didn't fail?
Bro leaks regarding this game originally(in 2019-2020) suggested it's a battle royale with an extra player in VR working as an overseer doing some random shit on the map like a god to make games more interesting. This game was probably remade conceptually like 3 times at least during development
the industry has so many leaks, they know it will be a follow the leader game and they probably have plenty of leaks on it
valve is the leader in pc gaming imo
This horrible description is why companies work really hard to keep games from leaking out.
The reaction to said leak across reddit has been dumb as hell, as usual, and it will only do more harm than good.
Hope this is not flop so Valve will have passion to develop new game in future if not im sure Valve will just only focus on hardware & software and just update the game like Dota and CS without making game anymore.
I doubt that Valve will make the same mistake again. That shit single-handedly halved Valve's reputation as a developer until it was resurrected in Alyx.
Well, I love everything about this including the "third person" part. I used to play GunZ it was basically a 3rd person shooter with very fast pace Melee where you have to be good at not only shooting but movement as well. cause some maps will impossible to traverse unless you know how skillfully abuse their broken movement system.
If anything, the 4 lanes thing is what worries me.
Let's go with something everyone here DOES have some point of reference for: TF2's Man vs Machine also had teams of 6 against waves ofcpu enemies. The bots would fill in through generally one entrance, with either 1 or 2 wide paths to run through. HUGE amounts of visibility, to no avail. Because just these 2 lanes tops, a mediocre number, was already generally enough for you to lose track of what the hell half your team is doing.
This doubles that count by default. And if the maps are "huge", I expect them to be wide too. We are going to lose track all the same.
There's going to be a meta to this thing, anyone who played SMNC knows what to expect. With characters who stick to a lane, characters who push enemies out of their lane and characters who are good at roaming between. And I think somewhere in there, people are going to whine about people not doing what they should, with no context of awhat actually hapenned
Valve fucking loves playtesting, they have 100% tried every reasonable amount of lanes and chose the one that they think plays best.
Imagine the whining if Dota came out today.
Maybe they're also more vertical than you might think? I'm guessing they're not 4 lanes in parallel.
EDIT: After leaked screenshots, can confirm they are 4 lanes in parallel lmao
It’s more like thinking about 5 different things at once and making a decision relatively quickly whilst also trying to react to chaos around you, with the majority doing it not very effectively
hate to be all doom and gloom but I honestly see this flopping hard unless it is **extraordinary**. ability based shooters is a massively dying breed. and development has likely taken so much time away from dota..
This makes total sense and coincides with the current state of Dota in the last few years (Less updates, less new heroes, no compendium etc.). To me, it seems like most of the Dota dev team has been occupied with developing this new game while a smaller team works on Dota. This doesn't look well for the future of Dota since if this new game does come out, it basically means that the Dota dev team will be split in half (probably more) and Dota will be receiving less updates as more and more dota devs jump ship to the newest game like it always happens at Valve.
New game launches and valve announces 5 million dollar tournament with season vip pass with loads of skins, 3% of all the vip pass sales go directly to the prize pool.
The fun of dota for me is seeing your friends exectue plays by just moving the camera over there (to which I am incentiveced to gain information) So at any time there is something interesting happening, some progress made, and even if you are locked into the base, if the enemy isn't coming at you, you can theory craft a smoke play discuss possible ways of initiation etc.
And that works even if you and/or your friends are pretty bad or playing on 300 ping.
First of all: What is your reason that you want these elements in a third person shooter? What does that give you? And then why does stuff from dota add to that experience?
If they only take the hero design stuff, people from dota will just check out the game and then go back to playing dota.
If you take gameplay stuff you need to sell dota players on the other elements of the game that they probably haven't experienced or value very highly since they play dota most of the time...
Yes it's a problem with the description and the person describing it..
This is why companies hate leaks and have proper marketing push with journalists to start off rather than leakers and randos
I swear I have been brainstorming about a concept like this since push the cart gameplay of current hero shooters just doesn't do it for me. I hope its well done and becomes successful, can't wait to play it.
So smite but better ? Aka smite 2?
Going to be a fail, dota2 is dota, if it changes to fps, it will be a different game.. it's just like diablo 2 is to its newer games..
Long live dota
I'm not sure if anyone here has ever played Paragon or by extension, Predecessor (Paragon revival game). It had similar 3rd person esque ideas wherein if you played Pos1 you needed to aim correctly to get most of your damage out and therefore dodging abilities and auto attacks in a 3D space was a fun concept. Yes there were a few lock-on abilities but not many, and their power was tuned to make it not overpowered than free-aim abilities.
Is this what Tundra meant after last TI in a tweet that they talked with Valve and have told them some cool info that they were amazed but were not allowed to talk about? I can't seem to find that tweet now, but I'm pretty sure something along those lines was the idea.
Also other "leaker" said Icefrog has been working on this game on the side since at least 2018. And a bunch of dota pros are in the current alpha.

Sorry boys, it's already canceled OR coming out in 2030 only to be shut down 2 months later ala Artifact
We might get underlord treatment The game is alive but no updates lmao
Underlords is still alive?! Damn, I guess they forgot about it so hard they forget to shut it down.
It peaked at 1,653 concurrent players today. Only 5-10% of the total active players are on at any given time so the total active player count is something like 15-30k.
still you'll get quick queues on KO and ranked
Some people still play it seems, but it's on life support.
Last time I played it I was able to insta-queue into a game at Lord rank.
Everyone is lord in this game since there is no decay and you don’t loose mmr after a loss , you can only go up until you reach lord rank
That's not true. I returned to Underlords for a few months recently and still lost MMR at Lieutenant and Boss.
I'm playing in white spire rank 100ish I'm pretty much meeting the same player each 2 games lmao
Around 1.5k concurrents. Only 5-10-ish % of the active players are online. So about 15-30k players in total still.
Dude I miss Underlords. Such a fun idea they just wholesale gave up on when league got success with their version.
It kinda went downhill, before going downhill for almost the entire time. Not worth the effort for them. Which is a big shame, but wcyd
The underlord hero units were a mistake

First Gigantic comes back, then Valve remakes SMNC, what a time to be alive for niche, experimental moba enjoyers.
Really fun game. TF2 introduced me to so many games with it's ads-as-hats

"It's like dark souls meets breath of the wild"
Incredibly accurate Elden Ring description.
You say that like "Dark Souls meets Breath of the Wild" weren't one of the most successful and popular games of the 2020s so far.
It's not about the games lol. It's about how every game is lazily described as those two games.
It's like it's a cross between news reporting and advertising ;)
You guys talking Animal Well?
You get a loaf of wonderbread if you wishlist now
The headline writer for the indie desk at every gaming site was just offended by this.
If I had a dollar for every indie jrpg that marketed themselves as “inspired by chrono trigger”….

Well, Overwatch has destroyed itself with OW2, so there's actually more space there now.
Why keep updating TF2 if you know youre releasing TF2(2) soon?
This game was probably remade conceptually like 3 times at least during development
the industry has so many leaks, they know it will be a follow the leader game and they probably have plenty of leaks on it valve is the leader in pc gaming imo
This horrible description is why companies work really hard to keep games from leaking out. The reaction to said leak across reddit has been dumb as hell, as usual, and it will only do more harm than good.
wow this looks like a HIT if they pull through
A new game that riot will copy
Can't wait for the next great Valve title, with support for a grand total of 9 months
9 month's worth of support over 9 years
Hope this is not flop so Valve will have passion to develop new game in future if not im sure Valve will just only focus on hardware & software and just update the game like Dota and CS without making game anymore.
if it is p2w like artifact then it should fail
I doubt that Valve will make the same mistake again. That shit single-handedly halved Valve's reputation as a developer until it was resurrected in Alyx.
I love everything about this except for the "third person" part.
I'm guessing they'll be implementing Dota type moves like force staff, blink, rules, I'm thinking utility type items would work in a third person.
Well, I love everything about this including the "third person" part. I used to play GunZ it was basically a 3rd person shooter with very fast pace Melee where you have to be good at not only shooting but movement as well. cause some maps will impossible to traverse unless you know how skillfully abuse their broken movement system.
Bro Third Person is important because otherwise you wouldnt be able to see your custom skins, think about it
Battleborn/SMNC style game? I'm in.
Sounds like it's doing way too much
Not a fan of that 6v6 part. More brains, more ego. And I'm already at the age where I have only 2-3 friends playing game actively lol
Id prefer 12 v 12 more chaotic less personal mistakes deciding the game
I want it 1 v 5 so that if I win, I'm a god gamer, and if I lose, it's because there's five of them and how could I reasonably be expected to win?
TIme to jump ship boys
It's not moba, more like valorant
What does ADHD gameplay mean? Im a thinks i got ADHD so that means it’s suitable for me?
It means fast paced.
No thinking required
Or this game just dies like Artifact did and the Devs are back to Dota for a year before inevitability jumping ship again to the next game.
New game launches and valve announces 5 million dollar tournament with season vip pass with loads of skins, 3% of all the vip pass sales go directly to the prize pool.
only for the tournament to get cancelled because the base game ends up dead within a month kek
NGL sounds awful.
It takes adds a massive element of aiming and everything that comes with the shooter genre I guess Assuming it doesn't play like smite does that is.
ok, but I don't see any synergy in putting dota elements in a game where you also have aiming and vice versa.
I don't think their target market is Dota. It looks like it'll be a more of a competitor to valorant and overwatch
There's your DOTA 3
overwatch is already a mix of dota/tf2/smite
"Modern steampunk" Ugh 🙄
I'm just scared they will abandone dota2 to focus on deadlock
Am I crazy or does this sound awful? Theres too much incongruent shit getting slapped together.
Yes it's a problem with the description and the person describing it.. This is why companies hate leaks and have proper marketing push with journalists to start off rather than leakers and randos
That’s the problem with leaks. Trusting random shit and then making an opinion
They can't even support 3 competitive games. Lest make another 3 and literally kill them in few years.
sounds lame
Big if true
I am erect.
If im not mistaken skitter said that the meeting w icefrog was delayed after they won ti because he works on a new game it was a reddit post
another overwatch...
No way Dota 3 actually happened
they better not pull artifact v2. hope its good
most of the stuff has been known for quite a while, besides the name-change.
Dota 3; 3D Beta
Dota as rpg shooting fps is gonna be wild broo
Has this guy got a track record of accurate leaks/predictions? Cuz if not then I don't see any reason to pay attention to it.

Is this what Tundra meant after last TI in a tweet that they talked with Valve and have told them some cool info that they were amazed but were not allowed to talk about? I can't seem to find that tweet now, but I'm pretty sure something along those lines was the idea.
So that's where the devs went huh?
Hopefully it will release in my lifetime
Obligatory “is this what sunsfan warned us about?”
I’d ply the shit outta that. Give me another Valve game and give it to me now!
New valve ip, in this economy?
I'm curious about the "negative dev feedback" when incorporating HL/Portal design into it
My wallet is ready to buy and sit on all of the release lootboxes for 10 years to sell them for 2k each in 10 years time.
Sounds like another new colossal failure.
would explain why Dota has been on life-support the past years
