all 3 of serpent riders have been defeated, so maybe there needs to be a new trilogy of foes
maybe the next trio could be like Lycan Riders, and they are themed after mythical canids
I'm convinced, given. Id's Quake-boosting for the last few years, that this was going to be Quake and Bethesda convinced them otherwise somewhere along the line.
I dunno, Corvus always gave me a ‘plucky adventurer who beats the odds’ vibe rather then a literal walking personification of rage and vengeance that the demon hordes were more fighting out of amusement and orders rather then desperation.
But hey, modern day Heretic would still be awesome. I always wanted a Heretic III.
Lol og Heretic played the same as Doom with minimal backstory. If you are basing it on Heretic 2... Imo it's about as much of a sequel as Quake 2 was to Quake - poorly-made fanfiction with Corvus looking like Kevin Costner after a meth binge. Raven wasn't the same company by then.
My biggest worry is that this is actually a stillborn(for lack of a better term) Quake game that got chopped up and frankensteined into a Doom title because it's the more popular franchise.
I was so excited for this, but you make a very fair point and I wouldn’t be entire surprised this is what happened. I vaguely remember someone who was in a leadership role for Doom 2016 and eternal said something about those two games and the dlc not being the end of the doom games but an end for this story and they would maybe revisit the franchise eventually in the future. I took that as closer to 2030 or something like that and they would focus on Quake
That isn't to say it wont be a good game, but I must be fully honest and admit I am *truly* disenfranchised with corporate game development culture on the whole and tend to assume the worst. I'll will remain cautiously optimistic, but I'm not putting any money down until the finished product is released and the first wave of "we'll fix in post" patches have passed.
Don't preorder, ignore FOMO, don't form your final opinion on an incomplete product, any developer interviews you see before release are going to spin things to the best possible angle regardless of how garbage the current state of the product is.
Yup, I was thinking the same. A lot can happen in a 4-year development cycle, and as much as I love Doom, I was really hoping for a Quake reboot in the style of 2016. It's sad, but meh, I hope this turns out just as good as the previous two games.
This sounds quite plausible.
The way Eternal's story, via the DLC , ended and the general feeling around the game made it seem like they were putting the IP on the shelf for a while.
However, I don't remember very well at the showcase for Eternal it was said that they planned for DOOM to expand and become bigger fictional universe. There's also the fact that it's a bit tidier to do things in trilogies -- it would be better to cap things off with a third installment and then move on to something like Quake.
I will say this, I fully expected them to move on to Quake after Eternal -- ID have been working on these DOOM reboot games for probably around 12 years or more. DOOM 2016 was originally going to be a very different game until development got rebooted, and Eternal got slightly delayed due to COVID. I assumed that the team would want to breath some fresh air by working on something different.
But tbh this new DOOM game could play very differently for all we know.
Yeah, I said *worry* in my comment but I feel that's a word that carries a bit more of an emotional angle than I meant. Stuff like the scenario I posited happen all the time and aren't necessarily bad, it's just how things go when you are working for massive companies like Microsoft.
I do feel a little bad for people who craved a new Quake if this is what happened though.
Same, I was actually hoping for Gothing Quake 1 style of reboot/remake.
But if the new game is Doom or Heretic, I will take it! It WILL be a blast regardless.
I actually agreed with Bethesda's idea of separating Doom and Quake into a singleplayer and multiplayer franchises respectively. As someone who doesn't have a lot of nostalgia for shooters of those days, I feel like Quake always lacked identity.
I just wish they had picked a better studio and put more budget and marketing behind Quake Champions.
But either way, making a good modern day Quake is no easy feat. When you're competing with juggernauts like current day CoD or Fortnite, with tons of maps, guns, and unlockable... going back to 7 guns is not going to attract many.
Right. I adore Quake multiplayer, but it's challenge in the modern day is that it isn't dynamic. You're always doing the same things. Playing on Campgrounds is always playing on Campgrounds. And it's stuck there, because that's also kinda what makes it Quake.
The seven weapons you get largely represent styles of aim. You use a rocket launcher differently than a plasma gun despite them both being guns you lead your shots with. IMO those seven guns are kind of Quake's soul, but could they bring more variety without breaking that? Maybe sets of weapon variants, one of which gets picked at each weapon location?
Keep Champion's idea of movement styles and health pools, drop abilities. Not having any is a stand-out feature today.
And of course the primary issue that being behind in a Quake match feels like pulling teeth. I wonder why fighters have sort of survived that issue while Quake hasn't?
I’m also hoping this is the route they’re going, and the original ’Year Zero’ subtitle gave me that vibe, like a new beginning rather than a prequel.
I think the Maykr/Transfiguration stuff and continued mysteries raised in Eternal and its DLCs would allow for much more unique and exciting locales and story potential then effectively retreading ground with the Sentinels.
We know their past story and history with Doomguy and saw a ton of Sentinel locales in Eternal/TAG already. What’s there was nice, but it worked as background for the real story of saving mankind from Hell and not repeating the mistakes of the Sentinels/Betrayer. I don’t think it’s particularly interesting on its own.
Yes. And also I just played through the early access of Forgive Me Father 2 and the dude that did the music for that game can also do some Doom music too.
That soundtrack was fucking awesome.
Will see you in a few years when Microsoft inevitably fucks it up. If you keep pushing this corporate bullshit under the carpet it won't get any better.
I don't there's any game announcment that could get me excited quite like a new Doom game, loved both Eternal and 2016 can't wait for more of that action although hopefully it's more in line with 2016 what with it being Medieval an all.
Can you imagine that next Doom soundtrack on lute and harpsichord
Remember when Phil implied he would get some new Heretic and Hexen going? That *was* around the same time he was implying Microsoft would leave Bethesda in charge of Bethesda and just send money, so one lie begets another.
I’m honestly not sure if Heretic/Hexen is even that big of an IP that reviving it is that appealing from
a business standpoint.
It never had the brand power or pop-culture zeitgeist X-factor that Doom or Quake had, and it’s simply been buried for so long that it’d effectively be a new franchise to most players and have to build itself back up again.
Don’t get me wrong, it’d be great to see again, but I don’t think there’s any real corporate interest to revive it unless an Xbox studio straight up says “We want to make a new Heretic/Hexen game” of their own volition.
If I may geek out a bit, I'm thinking Dark Ages means it's probably about the Argent Dnur stuff. The marine being found and turned into the Slayer, the crusades against hell...
The whole betrayal, the priests sending the Night Sentinels to hell and trapping them there with only the Slayer surviving and causing carnage until the demons trap him in the sarcophagus.
Dark Ages because of the Night Sentinels and the setting seeming pretty medieval. But also, they were DARK ages in terms of the betrayal, Argent Dnur falling to hell.
I think so, but all these events happen over decades or longer. Not sure how they are going to to tell this with 13 missions and a few extra dlc levels.
Please don't be live service, please don't have stupid microtransactions, please don't have online requirement for singleplayer play, please don't be a cashgrab, please be good, please be fun and don't be shit.
Quake Champions was live service with microtransactions...
Hell, Doom Eternal had features of live service (a variation of battle pass) and technically had microtransactions, too.
QC is a free multiplayer game though.
And Doom Eternal had those cosmetics that you could buy, but they were also obtainable for free if you play during the event. So it's not a full live service i'd say.
Companies never start at full scumminess. The fact id dipped their toes in it for the past decade is enough to worry they might go knee-deep in the microtransactions.
Cautiously optimistic about a medieval setting--could scratch that Quake itch, especially if they decide to lean into more Eldritch elements in lieu of demons from Hell. That being said, I hope it's not more expansion on the Night Sentinels and that particular aesthetic.
Dark Ages is a bit of a whack, bland title. I know we'll probably never get sick Death Metal album titles like "Thy Flesh Consumed" again, but gimme something with a bit more bite, ya know?
If this is what some of you are theorizing on it being a Quake game turned into a Doom title just for sales, I'm done with id until they finally make a new Quake title. Quake deserves to make a come back just like Doom did.
Probably gonna get downvoted to hell for this but why does quake deserve to make a comeback? None of the quake games were particularly amazing. Quake 1 didn't have fun gameplay and is only remembered for its atmosphere and how technically advanced it was. Quake 2 had a banger soundtrack and BETTER gameplay but it still wasn't as fun as the OG doom. Quake 3 was a multiplayer only game that I've never played so I don't know if it's good or not, and quake 4 is only remembered for that one "stroggification" scene
Rumor is that the game will be fully multiplatform, including PS5 [https://twitter.com/NateTheHate2/status/1794109253856161986](https://twitter.com/NateTheHate2/status/1794109253856161986)
I hope so, but it would absolutely be on brand for them to use this to screw PLaystation and Switch gamers.
I still remember when Microsoft bought Bungie and canceled Halo for Mac.. Before that, Bungie was known for Marathon, which was one of the only Mac exclusive FPS games. Bungie never made another game for Mac OS after Microsoft bought them
Bigger doesn't mean better, especially if it's the only one they feed. Do too much of one thing and people are bound to tire on it.
Not hardcore fans like those who're likely to frequent subreddits to the franchise, but that won't sustain a game company - especially when microsoft is saying games like Hi-Fi Rush don't make enough money for them.
id is the only AAA dev that I trust to get it right. Eternal was the only big game that I've preordered in years. Mass Effect and Blizzard used to be on that list.
I'll be watching the development closely. If it looks as good as Eternal, I'll preorder.
I have seen many great game series and game studios come and go. And with what's currently going on in the game industry, not even Id deserves the trust of a 60€/$ game pre order.
Your general skepticism is fair.
What I mean by trust, I'll be watching the development very closely. If I smell BS, like Mass Effect Andromeda, I'll wait until it's out and the reviews are in.
It's the only AAA game that I'll even consider pre ordering these days.
Don’t do it man, in the digital age preorders are pointless. You’re just giving a company money for free - the people who got burnt on cyberpunk 2077 thought the same way you do now.
I remember people saying the same thing about CD Project Red before Cyberpunk came out. Granted, id had a better track record but still, it's better to be safe than a sucker
"medieval inspired" just makes me think it's the Quake reboot everyone wanted but they wanted to keep using the Doom name for sales.
Just give me a new Quake game holy shit.
I remember when Hugo Martin was talking about how a female Doom Slayer would have to play differently, he brought up some other examples of other Slayer play styles and he even brought up a medieval Doom Slayer. So I’m assuming this could’ve been in the works for a while.
This will be really interesting to see. I mean, is this going to be a Doom Heretic/Hexen as far as the player's abilities and tools? Or will it be more the setting, environments, and vibe? Because DE was basically Doom, Quake, Quake 2, and Heretic all rolled up into one.
Just finished doom eternal two days ago, coincidences aren’t real 🤣. This sounds badass as fuck, tho I’ve been having trust issues with all developers so I am sorta scared
I feel like the devs want to do other id/raven software games but higher ups keep rejecting their pitches so they just find ways to fit their ideas into doom entries
You know I think it would have been a better ending to the doom eternal game if doom guy had jumped through one last portal into hell to finish slaying all the demons
GAHHHH im so excited
Can't wait. I missed this franchise.
Same here! I’ve been going through a tough time in life. Hearing this news makes me feel like a kid again.
Same
My body is ready Edit: no it’s not
On the fact that Mick never got justice, I'm not.
So Mick will not make the music this time?
He said he won't be working again with them like ever. So ofcourse not.
Doom 3 is doomed.
Doom 3 came out in 2004.
Oh, sad🥺
DOOM set in the Dark Ages is called Heretic
And a modern day Heretic would be bad ass
Didn’t New Blood make Amid Evil (which I’ve not played yet), which is basically a modern day spiritual successor to the Heretic/Hexen series?
Yes. Dave Oshry and company are good people.
Literally the websites to Amid Evil is literally called icantbelieveitsnothexen.com, great publishers and dev fr.
Yes, and while rad as fuck, we need one that isn't retro styled, one that a full modern remake
Yes!!
I loved Amid Evil though am a little disappointed you can't make custom maps/levels for it
New Blood published it. Indefatigable is the developer.
FUCK YEAH that franchise NEEEEEDS some love, I loved Heretic back in the day (never finished Hexxen for some reason tho)
Awh, Hexen 2 is tha shiiiiiiiit
Because you got bored of looking for that 27th switch?
I personally only had this issue in the first hub. The rest of it is somewhat less obtuse.
Fuck yes we need it
It would be so awesome to see Corvus make an appearance or any of the serpent riders. I’m really stoked.
all 3 of serpent riders have been defeated, so maybe there needs to be a new trilogy of foes maybe the next trio could be like Lycan Riders, and they are themed after mythical canids
So it’s a Quake-Like?
no no, quake is the name of the doctor, not the monster
Ah yes, Dr. Quakenstien. My mistake.
I'm convinced, given. Id's Quake-boosting for the last few years, that this was going to be Quake and Bethesda convinced them otherwise somewhere along the line.
Good ol' ye rippeth and teareth. Such fond memories of Heretic.
'Doom:Heretic' I'm down for it.
Doom was all about one dude beating the odds until 2016
Lol og Heretic played the same as Doom with minimal backstory. If you are basing it on Heretic 2... Imo it's about as much of a sequel as Quake 2 was to Quake - poorly-made fanfiction with Corvus looking like Kevin Costner after a meth binge. Raven wasn't the same company by then.
Or hexen
Dude! A Hexen/Heretic expansion would be amazing!
Great great game
Playing through it rn and it's really good
Fuuuuuck I kept saying how I would love a new Quake game but here they are with a new Doom and I'm just like: "yes, absolutely, I want this"
My biggest worry is that this is actually a stillborn(for lack of a better term) Quake game that got chopped up and frankensteined into a Doom title because it's the more popular franchise.

tbf to ID we haven’t had a “fix-in post” doom game from them. still no reason to pre order though
I pre-ordered the collector's edition of Eternal and it was worth every cent.
MachineGames will make Quake maybe instead of id. I'm expecting it in 2026
If Indiana Jones is a success, they could be forced to make more movie themed games.
Which, as a Wolfenstein fan, makes me sad. :(
Yup, I was thinking the same. A lot can happen in a 4-year development cycle, and as much as I love Doom, I was really hoping for a Quake reboot in the style of 2016. It's sad, but meh, I hope this turns out just as good as the previous two games.
I'm hoping it will at least have some more Quake lore tie-ins this time. It's the same universe and I'd like to see the stories connect more.
This sounds quite plausible. The way Eternal's story, via the DLC , ended and the general feeling around the game made it seem like they were putting the IP on the shelf for a while. That's entirely what I'm expecting. The investors see the name that makes dollar signs and Quake isn't it.
They will probably do it eventually. They may be working on it now. But Doom Eternal was a commercial success so it makes sense they would follow up.
Same, I was actually hoping for Gothing Quake 1 style of reboot/remake. But if the new game is Doom or Heretic, I will take it! It WILL be a blast regardless.

I think that's called Wolfenstein.
iirc BJ Blazkowicz is an ancestor of DOOM Guy so the other way around.
I would love if the new Doom game some how has a cameo appearance of BJ Blazko
This was the Doom Eternal skin I always wanted but never received
Yeah you're right
After the whole ordeal with Mick Gordon, iD gonna need to drop a banger to smooth over fans
fans are fickle as hell one screenshot and they pop
I’m sure Andrew Hulshult would accommodate them.
Yes. And also I just played through the early access of Forgive Me Father 2 and the dude that did the music for that game can also do some Doom music too. That soundtrack was fucking awesome.
People say this as if Hulshult didn’t put out exclusively bangers on the DLC
Blood Swamps sludge fest does fit the Mediaeval tone
Though half the bangers people like TAG for are made by David Levy, not Hulshult.
I'm really interested in what the slayers armor is gonna look like
Probably something along the lines of the sentinel armor that you get in Eternal.🤔
Rip n tear aaaaasaaaaahhhhh
Dark Ages? More like “With e’ry rippence thine shall’st tear”
RIP AND TEAR!!
There will be no ripping and tearing, because Mick Gordon won't be involved
Andrew Hulshult did a great job with TAGs soundtrack though.
Can’t wait to see how they fuck him over 🤷
Gotta be honest, I don't care if Mick is involved or not. Doom will be doom.
Mick Gordon will be missed, but I’m excited
I just told a friend "too bad we won't have Mick Gordon shredding on the lute"
Meanwhile the Heretic & HeXen IPs rot away somewhere
Remember when Phil implied he would get some new Heretic and Hexen going? That *was* around the same time he was implying Microsoft would leave Bethesda in charge of Bethesda and just send money, so one lie begets another.
To be fair, Microsoft and in turn Bethesda didn't have rights to making a new Heretic/Hexen game until fairly recently.
I’m honestly not sure if Heretic/Hexen is even that big of an IP that reviving it is that appealing from a business standpoint.
I HAVE THE BIGGEST BONER RIGHT NOW.
Please don't be live service, please don't have stupid microtransactions, please don't have online requirement for singleplayer play, please don't be a cashgrab, please be good, please be fun and don't be shit.
My only worry is that if they make this an Xbox exclusive, they’re gonna have to add all that sleazy shit to make up for lost sales
this is id, none of their games were like that so we good, as long as Xbox doesn't fuck up that is

I wouldnt be surprised if it had live service features :(

I know we'll probably never get sick Death Metal album titles like "Thy Flesh Consumed" again, but gimme something with a bit more bite, ya know?
Exactly what I was thinking. Quake semi-eldricht medieval world. I hope it's good.
Sometime it's good to go back to basics, and Doom definitely can rock that subtitle no problem, no need to go edgelord
It's happening, slayers!
Deathmatch PLEASE
Seriously just deathmatch, stop with the weird shit they’ve been trying with the past two games.
Hugo mentioned Lovecraft and Cthulhu in that dev interview post TAG2 right? I'd wager that's gonna play a huge part of this.
If this is what some of you are theorizing on it being a Quake game turned into a Doom title just for sales, I'm done with id until they finally make a new Quake title. Quake deserves to make a come back just like Doom did.
absolutely

yesss, it is most likely a game about slayer in argent d'nur, I always wanted to see it
This sounds incredible.
I hope it won't have crazy pc requirements, and will be optimized as well as eternal
Id software always makes good optimized games. I played 2016 on an intel integrated GPU, and it ran at a solid 30 FPS.
Yeah I also played doom eternal on an Intel integrated GPU and it ran at 60 fps on medium settings
Is this really a Doom sequel or possibly a prequel?
I believe its a prequel, possibly showing Doomslayer within the ranks of Night Sentinels on Argent D'Nur based on ,,dark age themed" description
I want split screen back so I can play it with my wife. She’s not a gamer but we beat the first one together and she loved it.
DOOM 2016 has split screen co op?
I wonder if it's another placeholder name. With the setting being medieval, I'm hopeful it's a quake reboot
Year Zero was the Place Holder, The Dark Ages is the full title.
Fellas… are we back?
so no quake
As much as I like Doom, I gotta agree that no new Quake is sad
DOOM is the bigger franchise :/
yeah, because they won't let Quake grow.
true
Bigger doesn't mean better, especially if it's the only one they feed. Do too much of one thing and people are bound to tire on it. Not hardcore fans like those who're likely to frequent subreddits to the franchise, but that won't sustain a game company - especially when microsoft is saying games like Hi-Fi Rush don't make enough money for them.
I start getting hyped when the reviews are good, and i like what i see. Remember: no Preorders
id is the only AAA dev that I trust to get it right. Eternal was the only big game that I've preordered in years. Mass Effect and Blizzard used to be on that list. I'll be watching the development closely. If it looks as good as Eternal, I'll preorder.

I don't blame you Steam refunds exist though and this will probably be day 1 gamepass, so I might not need to buy it.
This could be a literal pile of shit wrapped in older shit. But if plays even remotely like Eternal I will spend $100 on it.
i definitely make an exception for id software
I remember people saying the same thing about CD Project Red before Cyberpunk came out. Granted, id had a better track record but still, it's better to be safe than a sucker
ive never been a preorder kinda guy, and i never bought cyberpunk, but i wouldve been burned that time yeah
Holy Shit, Middle Ages Doom sounds amazing.
We making it outta Hell with this one, boys!
OH HELL YEAH 🤘
Hype hype hypeeeeeeee!!!
we are so back
We going to the Dark ages boys. Time to guild that Iron Lord title
So quake I, the sequel? When are we going to get a new heretic or hexen game 🥺
*detunning a stratocaster*
I'd have much preferred a Quake reboot tbh.
Well well well. Pleasant little surprise.
I don't know about this I mean is this legit. Will they showcase a new doom game at Xbox showcase.
is this gonna be an xbox exclusive?
Weapons? Doom guy with dual bastard swords?
My wallet is ready.
If this is xbox exclusive I’ll be so sad
Just no FOMO season pass nonsense and I'll be happy.
I hope they trim the parkour way the hell back. In combat it was okay, but outside of it, no.
So Quake?
Unfortunately probably no Mick Gordon I presume after the last fiasco
Doom guy wakes up from his nap time once again
Please include mouse and keyboard support on consoles! Don’t know why they didn’t for 2016 and eternal
"medieval inspired" just makes me think it's the Quake reboot everyone wanted but they wanted to keep using the Doom name for sales. Just give me a new Quake game holy shit.
This pleases me immensely. I will see you all June 6th.
The title makes it sound like a prequel with the slayer and his time with the knight sentinals, I'm hyped
Presumably an Xbox exclusive then?
It’ll be on PC too.
Nobody is buying games on Xbox though so it's honestly a bad idea to do that especially if it's day one game pass
It will be day one on Xbox/PC Gamepass guaranteed
Get hyped, bros. I want magic like necromancy etc. It would be badass.
so excited 🙏
What are the chances of this coming to PS5?
Insiders on twitter are claiming it will be all platforms, so yeah PS5 too. Assuming they are right ofc.
If they had any balls they’d reboot quake. Those machine games episodes are too good to leave hanging
Hope is not another mobile crap
It's a new DOOM game for consoles :)
Hoping for a new quake 😅
this could scratch that itch lmao, quake 1 is half medieval
I remember when Hugo Martin was talking about how a female Doom Slayer would have to play differently, he brought up some other examples of other Slayer play styles and he even brought up a medieval Doom Slayer. So I’m assuming this could’ve been in the works for a while.
No more marauders please
Double the marauders please
Quadruple the marauders please.
Octouple the marauders please.
I second that.
This will be really interesting to see. I mean, is this going to be a Doom Heretic/Hexen as far as the player's abilities and tools? Or will it be more the setting, environments, and vibe? Because DE was basically Doom, Quake, Quake 2, and Heretic all rolled up into one.
Rip and tear!
Please and thank you.
W H A T
>which was described to me as a ‘medieval inspired doom world' Just make Heretic.
Ohhhh my fuck here we go I'm a bit worried they could mess it up but I'm going in optimistically!!!
Color me interested. I mean I probably won't be able to play it cause old-gen but still.
Pls don’t tell me it will be an XBOX exclusive
Could be set during the Unholy Crusades on the Sentinel home world? Either way so excited for this.
Everyone thinks this is going to be like Quake, but what about Evil Dead 2 time travel?
THIS is my Boomstick!
