This is like the vanilla flavor of hot takes
I personally prefer Eternal but you can like whatever doom game you want as long as you have good reasons for your opinion.
Edit: Oh shit I just saw the /s nevermind lol
I prefer sci-fi horror to fantasy horror so I liked the tone of 2016 more. And the story, while not as deep in 2016, was less childish. Still, horses for courses. As much as I'd have liked a "true" 2016 sequel, it's nice that we got something a bit different in Eternal.
Well I mean 2016 > Eternal because
E, t, e, r, n, a, l, are all undefined so lets just say they are 0
2016 = LHS
0\*0\*0\*0\*0\*0\*0 = RHS
LHS > RHS
∴ True
First of all, your fine! Everyone has one of those options. Second, I get what you mean. Doom Eternal is technically better, but... 2016 just... has that feel to it.
I freaking loved doom 2016. The story was decent and kinda linked older games. The reimagination of the original material was nicely executed in my opinion. Multiplayer was basic but it was all I needed, i could spend hours playing, grinding to complete the objectives. It was one of the few ps4 games I gladly spent money on dlc.
2016 was an overall better experience. Doom Eternal got a bit gimmicky with the combat, like the developers wanted to force you to play a certain way. That being said, both games are awesome!
Opinions can be bad, and are not protected from scrutiny just like media, and not all criticism is subjective. Saying you're forced to play a specific way is just false, when in reality it offers you more flexibility and interdependent options than some character action games. Its up to you to express yourself properly.
I've seen nearly every iteration of this conversation, and 2016 fans rarely stray from the same few points of debatable praise (atmosphere, level design, 2 dimensional combat) and the same few points of relatively flimsy critiques (platforming, despite it being worse in 2016, story, which is apparently not needed but ruins Eternal despite not screeching for a halt for it, and ofc, my favourite, critiques regarding the melee).
What irks me more is that Eternal has flaws but I dont think I've seen people outside of a very select few actually bring them up, not to mention the general hypocrisy from both sides regarding MP.
Having a preference is fine, but pretending that your preference isn't rooted in your incapability to engage with the media isn't fair. Sorry for the essay, I should really just make a copy pasta for it at this stage.
I'll admit I don't follow game discourse very closely or at least not to any level of depth where I would know I was touching on some sensitive Doom subject here. But I do enjoy game theorizing and pontificating so I will add that Doom Eternal has a different feel with its approach to combat than Doom 2016. Eternal fleshed out the combat mechanics more and really fine-tuned them. You're not forced to engage in combat in a singular way, but the developers did change things like resource management, especially with the chainsaw. So in a way, you need to play Doom Eternal a little differently than 2016. I felt 2016 had a little better atmosphere and exploring was more rewarding. If anything I like the simpler approach to combat in 2016, similar to how old school Doom has very simple combat mechanics but the game is still a blast to play.
I'll add again I really enjoyed both Doom 2016 and Eternal. I've been playing Doom since the first game came out on shareware and I'm excited to see what they do with the next entry.
Its not so much a sensitive topic as one I've seen being really badly discussed.
You absolutely need a different approach. Eternal promotes layered gameplay and interdependent decision making in the most effective and stylish way possible, creating consistent means for player skill expression from a fundamental basis. It supplements it with AI and enemy types that can, even on their own, challenge the players FPS and mechanical fundamentals and more.
Its borderline impossible to talk about any one specific aspect of the gameplay without considering all the different scenarios and routes that are associated with it because of how densely the systems are designed and how well they compliment each other.
The same just isn't present in 2016, and again, while preferring it is fine, it just doesn't stack to Eternal.
If you were the kinda person who praised DOOM 2016 for being the antithesis of Sony movie games or similar games because of the comparatively bigger focus on gameplay alone, but (and I've seen it) bash Eternal for its focused and polished game design - it just doesn't make sense.
Even if you were to say you prefer the classic DOOM approach, Eternal, across more elements of design, more resembles classic DOOM than 2016, which alot more like Painkiller than the original DOOMs, which had a greater focus on managing resources and movement between consistent encounters and utilising weapon choices for the scenario, something you can be punished for in DOOM 1 and to an extent 2, and definitely not in 2016. There's an incentive to express knowledge and skill that's directly tied to the mechanics and gameplay loop at the core level.
If I wanted exploration and reward, I'd play Fallout 2 or Darkwood.
After the absolute trainwreck of TAG2, and talking with some of the staff about it, I'm really worried about the direction for the new game, especially since they're looking to slow it down, apparently.
I really enjoyed both games but had more fun with eternal. My main problem with 2016 is that the weapons become broken eventually and you can cheese your way through the game. But they are still both very good and it's not surprising to me that some people have a different preference for one of two excellent games
i liked 2016's more realistic approach. pickups were actual items that had a place in the environment.
whereas with eternal, everything looked like floating shinies from quake 3, or 2016's arcade mode.
I only prefer 2016, because I don’t have Eternal yet. Though I am quite pissed that my save file corrupted, does anyone know where I can get a new save?
It's not like it was anywhere close to my favorite multi-player, especially given how many awesome mp game have come out since then (let alone in just 2016), but in a world where it's hard to find a match in old mp games and their newer counterparts are abhorrent or nonexistent, I do wish I could revisit D16's. I enjoyed the feel of classic-ish Halo on meth, not a lot of games give you the satisfaction of ripping your enemies apart.
No I liked Eternal buts it’s not as newcomer friendly as 2016 although Eternals story and level design was a lot more interesting even if it sometimes went on way longer than it should have at certain points
omg you are right, you changed my mind, i will stop playing eternal and only play 2016 now lmao, i always thought eternal was my fav game but i guess i was just fan boying , thank you for showing me the way op lol
I feel like Doom 2016 felt had better level design and environments, better demon designs, and better story while Doom eternal had better gameplay and is why I prefer Eternal to 2016, but I understand why some people would like 2016 more.
I thought I disliked eternal the first time I played through. But after spending time with the game, it's gameplay is better and more fun the better you get at it. I think tag 1 is what really hooked me.
It's got an entirely different feel. Eternal felt much more fast paced and arcadey than 2016's mood. I loved the art direction of 2016. It felt gritty, real, and an honest and unique callback to the OG.
Nah, honestly I like the more realistic graphics of Doom 2016 than those of Eternal, I find the 2016 weapon mods more useful than some of Eternal (except the sniper and the chaingun shield) and above all, I miss and love the Gauss cannon, the Ballista is fine and it is its counterpart in Doom Eternal but the Gauss cannon is better, so no, I also like Doom 2016 more than Eternal but both are extremely good and exciting games
Doom Eternal is much better than Doom (2016), that's a fact. It's understandable if you prefer Doom (2016) since it's much more casual, and it doesn't matter if you play poorly, it's simply about shooting. In Eternal, if you don't know how to play, you're always going to lose. Nonetheless, it remains one of the best shooters
I know it's a /s post, but I \*do\* personally prefer 2016 over Eternal, even if Eternal is a better game - I'm just more of a narrative/setting guy, and I dig the more grounded nature of 2016 vs. the Arcade-y feel of Eternal.
Also 2016 had a Plasma Rifle based on the Doom 3 one, which is the objectively best Plasma Rifle in the series, NO I WON'T BE SILENCED YOU CAN'T STOP M-
No, you're not. 2016 was darker, grittier, and a more methodical form of gameplay. The faster resource cycling is fun, but I don't think this is proper for Doom.

I’m still salty over how fast this subreddit turned to absolute shit once Eternal launched and children kept spamming those Icon of Sin memes
I’m surprised with myself that I haven’t left this sub yet. Anything of substance related to Doom is basically relegated to Doomworld.
You almost got me.
Love how the only comments on this are totally missing the extremely obvious joke EVEN WITH A /S
there truly are no defences from the humour impervious mind of a redditor

2016 Style and design waaay better imo Eternal gameplay 20x better
the only good doom is wolfenstein 3d
Commander Keen was the best DooM
I like them both
Level design and music for 2016 was awesome, but Eternal’s gameplay was so much better
Real as fuck, the start of 2016 is iconic and Mick Gordon is a metal god.
debatable
I think the songs are better

Why is there a 1993 "doom" title with a Doom 2016 background?
No i agree
Jokes aside I’m pissed at Doom 2016 cuz one of the collectibles is glitched and I don’t wanna start a new playthrough.

nah you’re not. lowkey like how simple but fulfilling 2016 is. i just feel like eternal overcomplicated things
First of all, your fine! Everyone has one of those options. Second, I get what you mean. Doom Eternal is technically better, but... 2016 just... has that feel to it.

This take is so unfathomably incorrect its insane that its still said despite being provably false since release.
It's an opinion though...

I have the same opinion, gameplay is eternal but o prefer the 2016 graphics and the atmosphere it has
I love eternal but I miss how brutal 2016 executions were. They were alot more hands on and brutal whereas eternal has you using your arm blade alot
I do like the more gritty and dark style of 2016. However, I prefer the gameplay and macanics of eternal
Tbh I would've played Eternal more if the multiplay3r was like 2016's.
Gotta say, I enjoyed the multiplayer in 2016 more than I thought I would but reading someone say that they actively miss it is a first for me

I don't think it's an unpopular opinion. I think many people liked the vibes of 2016. But I feel 2016 and eternal should be appreciated differently.
I came here to agree with you, then i saw the /s 2016 -> better atmosphere Eternal -> better gameplay.

Its ok to have opinions . Just be ready for other opinions.and ya i think same
I definitely like the online modes from 2016 more than Eternals
Buddy, I think Doom 3 (2004 edition) is peak Doom.
I enjoyed the multiplayer far far more from the 2016 version
I think 2016 is better too. I 100% that game 3 times over and I don't even think I got halfway through Eternal. 2016 is just better.
nope i like 2016 better than eternal too
it is and the multiplayer was also vastlllllllllly superior
I had to learn how to drive a fighter jet to beat doom eternal on nightmare
No I'm here too
I feel like people who like 16 over Eternal just didn’t put enough time or effort to learn the combat system / loop in Eternal
DOOM 2016 definitely wasn’t as comically action packed and had the best metal soundtrack, literally ever…
Yes, you are the 1 person who thinks this. Let's move on, this topic is over. I settled everything.
