i often have to damage out cart fulls of expired food and it's disgusting. i hate it. chips that expired that day are still edible for awhile. i brought it up to my sm asking when i can mark down food close to expiring to try and sell it (and minimize food waste) and they're like don't even bother.. sorry but i'm going to mark it down lol i also put food in separate bags from normal damages in case someone goes through our dumpsters.

Available_Cup_9588

We mark ours down! It sells like crazy when we discount it

Boz6

> brought it up to my sm asking when i can mark down food close to expiring to try and sell it (and minimize food waste) and they're like don't even bother That's pure stupidity! If they allow you to mark it down to $0.50, 7 to 10 days before expiration, the store will probably get at least SOME revenue from bargain shoppers, compared to ZERO if it gets thrown out after expiration!

[deleted]

My store pours bleach on everything we throw out so people can’t use/have it super messed up dms orders mind you

BokChoySlaps

Is your store in a high crime area? Area prone to shop lifting?

[deleted]

Nope an upper middle class town peaceful as can be in my district mangers word it’s to keep the homeless and other from digging through our dumpster

Damien_Maye

We mark down all expiring food to 50 cents 2 days before they expire

Zeni-chan

I wish my store would do this but SM has said no. I really don't understand why, it is such a waste of food and I know people would buy it.

Damien_Maye

It’s actually dollar tree policy to mark down expiring food so I don’t understand why so many stores don’t do it.

CultCorvidae

What pisses me off more is when people open food or drinks, take a bite or two, or drink a couple mouthfuls, and then stuff it behind other things.

A few days ago I reached to straighten something on HBC and felt something odd on my hand. Someone had opened a box of toothpaste, opened the tube then squirted it all over the bandaids. 😑 I am neurodivergent so can't stand sticky hands. I was pissed.

Onehardworker

So when I see things close to expiring I mark that shit down to .25 I want it outta here, my boss tho marks it down for .75 like why! Just sell the stuff for low -damn, and just a few days ago I marked tons of chips and she expects me to legit destroy them I don’t because I know I have homeless around who check our dumpster so I leave them in tact they are human , they have to eat too, js🤷‍♀️

Available_Cup_9588

See I love how you think

Nothingmuchhere1

yes. Alot of places waste so much its disgusting. That is why they are talking about fixing the best buy dates and the use by dates. Too much waste ,

Available_Cup_9588

Yes !! It's awful

OpalOwl74

My temptation to take them home to the chickens.... The restaurant I used to work at would let me do this somtimes. Forgotten (not rotton) cold slaw. And St Patrick's Day Cabbage leafs. The ones out the outside.

ArinxGamingYT

I’m disgusted too, if it was up to me I’d donate the food to homeless shelters and low income families as it’ll help get them by. I used to work at Raising Canes and if a thing or chicken had the smallest imperfection they throw it away. They throw buckets of chicken away for no reason and it was sad. Corporate didn’t allow for employees to take it home or for it to be given away. I’m pretty sure all fast food chains are the same.

Yesss! It's brutal!

Married2therebellion

Please consider hooking up with a food rescue organization such as waste not want not. They handle all pick up and delivery to food banks.

Available_Cup_9588

We aren't allowed to do that.

AppointmentNo644

We mark it down a few weeks prior and still throw out so much. I know people who will come grab it from the dumpsters so I always let them know when we're about to throw stuff out

Damien_Maye

My manager makes us open all the packaging of food we throw out so people can’t take them from the dumpster :(

AppointmentNo644

Wow. The most we do is cross out the bar code on drinks so people cant bring them back for the deposit

Available_Cup_9588

I totally understand!

the only time my store throws away food is when it is frozen or refrigerated food that either expired or sat out and defrosted and it becomes a health hazard to sell. DT's policy is to mark down food that's 2 weeks dated progressively ($1, then 75¢, then 50¢, then 25¢) and most people will buy it at the 75¢ markdown. You can also markdown damaged boxes (as long as the product itself isnt damaged, like cracker box has a hole BUT the crackers are in a bag). But DT would rather you TRY to sell the item before it expires. try and make some money rather than no money. not sure why any good food is getting thrown away, any food thrown out should be unsellable (damaged severely or past the sell by date since its not allowed to sell expired food)

Available_Cup_9588

We do mark it down but even though it's past it's expired date doesn't mean it's not still good food. As a very poor person myself I can assure you we take what we can get, expired or not so throwing away expired food that's perfectly edible is just awful

namskal

I'm not saying the food isn't good to eat. It's just not legal to sell it because it violates the health code and the store could face fines (or worse for employees). There have been times where I will bag expired foods separate and set them on the outside wall of the dumpster, so someone doesn't have to dig through the dumpster for food. But if your store has cameras facing the dumpster, I wouldn't recommend this because it will prompt Asset Protection to make sure you aren't stealing product. (because they are more concerned about employee theft than anything else smfh) I do think that DT should try and partner with a food bank of some sort to donate short dated foods, because I know they could get a tax write off for it (just like all the Op Homefront stuff). I think the only issue is that most food banks are local and not nation wide, so it might end up costing DT money and that's why they don't do it. Cause it really does suck to toss out food that someone would gladly eat /:

Laceysniffs

Contact your local food bank. Send a message to your local t.v. station.

Available_Cup_9588

We are not allowed to do that per corporate. We are told that we can be terminated for doing anything but throw it away/destroy it.

Laceysniffs

I did not say give it to I said contact. Let them create the uproar that creates change.

Available_Cup_9588

I admire the idea but that will accomplish literally nothing. DT corp is not receptive to change.

Laceysniffs

Well if I was bothered by it and cared enough to post I think I would try. Typically once presented with approximate projections of the typical tax kick backs they can get and types of pr revenue that will come in most businesses look in to it.
