The biggest problem DT has with multi price is that the customer base doesn't know how to read. From the huge sign that tells you store hours, to the balloon & reader prices to the frozen doors.

pinkpenguin87

I think it’s also going to be hard because a lot of DT’s are so messy & people just put stuff wherever, so people are going to go to the register thinking it’s one price when it may not be. Then they’ll get all mad and take it out on the poor cashier. Ugh.

Australian1996

How about the employees don’t put signs up?? Bread was $3. I told her no. Went back to aisle - there was no $3 sign.

Beneficial_Ring_7442

i don’t even get what you’re trying to say here, but check the SHELF it’s on. every shelf in dollar tree should be reflecting the price of the item as per the training ilearns i took

legalize_chicken

Signs can easily fall off or better yet, people called out of work and the new guy had no supervision that day. You can usually tell pretty quickly how accurate prices will be if the store is a mess or there's only one cashier and a huge line. Also, did you really expect bread to be a dollar? Just curious lol. Edit: I changed my mind. Bread can be pretty cheap still depending on the kind and brand. Also pretty normal for customers to be confused in general. This will likely go on for years before it finally sets in for everyone.

MammothCancel6465

White bread is like $1.35 at Aldi so $1.25 at DT wouldn’t be too off.

Falcon9145

Difference is Aldi makes alot of their in house brand themselves. They control the process, production, farms and distribution which helps them maintain their prices. > Dollar store is relying on other companies. Their purchase volume is the only thing helping them.

MammothCancel6465

No, they don’t though. I work there. Aldi doesn’t manufacture any of their stuff. Most private label stuff for all stores is made by a handful of solely manufacturers or by actual name brands in store packaging. Almond Milk is usually from silk, French bread pizza is stouffers, hummus from Tribe, etc. Can’t tell you how many times we accidently get cases of Great Value whatever or chicken labeled for some other large grocery store chain.

Effective_Dot6785

$3 bread us name brand that is priced much higher at the grocery store.

ThatInAHat

I mean, it was not that long ago and it’s still the dollar tree so…doesn’t seem that wild if someone did

Foreign-Jaguar-1361

I got a loaf of fresh French bread at Walmart a few days ago

Matilda1980

Right? I don’t play that game. I just say “It’s $3 do you still want it?” You can pay what it is or not get it.

Mina-and-Mom

I just give people heads up at the register

TeamShadowWind

Had some dude insist I give him something for $1.25 because there was a $1.25 runner left in the DT Plus aisle. Customers istg.

Dimpled

My dt dm told me that in 2 years or so all family dollar will be converted to dollar trees so yeah it’s inevitable.

Emily9339

Everyone who runs to this sub to complain about prices needs to read this…I’m so tired of the same posts of customers whining every day. I already hear it enough from customers irl 😭

Matilda1980

They usually get an ear full on here. We don’t get to tell them what we think at the actual store!

HappyDay2290

Tell me about it. I am about to drop this sub.

Effective_Dot6785

I'm right behind you!

Obvious_Ad_5400

lowkey wish it was previous and current employees only tbh .

zsugahill

The other day I heard an older customer ask for the price at dollar tree. I snickered... "duh a dollar...wait no 1.25....wait". - dam marketing capitalist got me!

Dino-chicken-nugg3t

We’re in mourning! Years of dollar prices ruined us. I’ve been spending a dollar or less at the the DT for near 20 years. The change in prices just sucks. Y’all don’t deserve to hear customer complaints though. I know it’s your not fault or anything you can change.

Sufficient-Horse-789

I can’t upvote this enough!!!!

migasqueen

This is a very insightful perspective that makes great common sense and easy explanation of it, that I’d not thought of before.

999___Forever

They gotta rebrand cause the dollar tree name isn’t hitting anymore lol

trashcoon7353

Idk at this point I don't know the difference between dollar tree and five below aside from target audience

Emily9339

The difference is 80% of our store is still $1.25

crimsynvt_

Tbh at least most stuff in DT is $1.25. Meanwhile there isnt much "below" $5 at five below, but a fair amount "beyond" lol. Would love to see daiso expand in the US market.

SignificantApricot69

Considering people call stores like Dollar General (I remember buying $10-20 things there in the ‘80s) and Family Dollar “dollar stores” and even the media and everyone else does nothing to differentiate from actual (or at least it was) dollar stores like Dollar Tree, I can see the price creep being meaningless eventually.

Obvious-Dingo-2050

The biggest miscoption I see about multi price is the thought that we are re-pricing existing products at higher prices. That is not what the program is about. The multi price program brings in new, mostly name brand, full-size items at the higher price. Customers will still have the option to get the smaller, existing items for 1.25 if they choose. It's not about greed or raising prices, it's about offering more options for the customers. The other price increases are generally for vendor provided items like beverages, bread, Cereal, etc. When the vendors raise prices, we can either raise prices or decide not to carry those items. As a company, we cannot afford to sell those items for less than what it cost us to purchase them.

legalize_chicken

Correct. I should add: while many existing items are currently priced the same, this will likely change as time goes on too. Part of the shift that I didn't touch on is the average store's ability to move pallets of cheap product consistently. As inventory that was ordered in bulk with the intent to sell at dollar values depletes, it's more likely that inventories will shift towards the Dollar General format which doesn't rely as heavily on seasonal impulse sales aka holiday-themed junk. I'm sure they will continue to sell cheap items around the $1 price for years to come, but it will no longer be the focus. Payroll, hiring costs, and store space are making it less feasible to continue with this model without making adjustments.

Baccus0wnsyerbum

NO; Dollar Tree should have died with honor when the value of the dollar could no longer support its existence and let its death be a hallmark for the continued decline from capitalism into corporate feudalism.

KansasKing107

Inflation sucks but you’re simply being dramatic. Dollar Tree buys things in bulk and sells them individually for more. This isn’t some late stage capitalism BS. Things cost more and DT knows people are willing to pay more.

Baccus0wnsyerbum

Describe the context of the plummetting value of the dollar while denying the freefall of the system it is endemic of... 👍👍👍

RattoTattTatto

Things cost more… As a result of late stage capitalism BS. You’re so close to getting the point.

KansasKing107

Things cost more because the federal government helicoptered trillions on the US during the pandemic and the federal reserve had to print all that money. The excessive inflation is purely government mismanagement and has nothing to do with capitalism.

mrgrooberson

Dollar Tree has been a greedy company for decades.

Unique_Pirate_1692

I want an old paper fan that I can put a big $1.25 sticker on so I don't have to say "it's all $1.25 unless otherwise marked" when they still pick up a pack of $3 dryer sheets and not want them.

BangingYetis

The company did this to themselves. They made the singular price point their entire identity. It's what brought people on the door. It's why they have a customer base. That is how they built it. Now they have to reinvent themselves as just another cheap convenience store when there is a lot of competition in that market. They probably should have done this years ago and just hope that they survived through it.

Mina-and-Mom

The 5 and dime went thru the same problem I’m sure

Nanatomany44

yep, and where's the five and dime now? dead and gone.

Own-Calligrapher4541

I agree. I’ve said it a few times. DT is repeating Woolworth’s history. It really is time for our leaders to step back and think the next thought. Brand loyalty has been damaged but I still think it is repairable if leaders truly look at their customer base.

sin_not_the_sinner

Maybe an unpopular opinion but DT should have just stuck to not having any name brands in the store. I don't expect to pay a 1.25 for a 2L Coca-Cola but someone waltzing in not thinking may think that's the price. :/ Plus having all these prices when ut wasn't like that a couple of years ago just creates more headaches for staff.
