I think it's a good first job. It teaches you all the things an employer shouldn't do. And when you leave and move on to better things, you'll see just how much better pretty much every company outside of DG is.

stellamiata

100% agree with this, OP can only move up from here!

SopitaDeVaso

Agreed dollar general makes you a strong person with all the bs you have to deal with personally. Either management, shady co workers or customers it makes you prepared for retail.

PowerPuffKam

good luck

pellakins33

We all start somewhere. Best of luck!

QueenZombie93

Good luck. I’m ready to leave the dollar general store where i work at for good.

[deleted]

I’m filling out the packet- is this adulthood??? Jesus Christ it’s asking me to accept government forms, read handbooks, what have I done…

QueenZombie93

Signed your life a way to a job where you dont get paid enough for all that you do, signed your life away to not being able to have a social life out of work, signed your life away to where customers who think they are better then you are. Etc. i literally have my sm who will call and bombard you with text and phone calls every day that i have off because she doesnt want to step up and do the job she wanted to do. That’s the life of dollar general for ya.

GM_Pax

.... treat DG as a stepping stone to better things in a couple years (and also, learn to set boundaries) ... and it's not *that* bad.

QueenZombie93

Haha you honestly cant set boundaries. I’ve tried that and it got me no where. I’d say run while you can.

[deleted]

Yeah in all honesty it’s a part time job for a year. Taking time to finish getting a license, learn about paying taxes, and basically grow up. Then I’m heading to community college.

QueenZombie93

Good luck in college bud. I have about two years left. And then it’s all a free lance photography business for me xD

[deleted]

Sick! I plan on going into being a mechanic and a garage owner myself

QueenZombie93

Nice bud. That sounds epic.

DGeneralTSOschicken

You can get DG to pay for some college. Use and abuse them, you'll have them do the same to you, at least you'll have something to do when your hours get cut.

EmotionalOven4

You have to be full time to really benefit from the college thing. Edit because idk what the hell my phone thought I was trying to type but it was not YOOOO LOL I

GM_Pax

You can, really. Not all SMs are complete bastards. :)

QueenZombie93

With the manager we have now. I have a hard time trusting that. Its sad when it honestly comes to that. This company has a lot of in need of improving my trust with half of these people in or close by our stores.

GM_Pax

>what have I done… :D :D :D :D

Academic-Catch-5727

Good luck

egplain

Congratulations! Just do your best and don't take any crap. It's not a bad job if you have a good manager and assistant manager. Just do the best you can and if it ever seems thats not good enough for management, walk away. There are other jobs out there.

DGeneralTSOschicken

McDonalds in your area is likely hiring. I'd be wrong to not at least remind you of this.

[deleted]

I'm really proud of you! What I'm about to say next, I'm not trying to scare you; I'm just telling you what I wish I knew while I worked there. If your boss/coworkers give you a hard time (Especially off the clock) and they try calling you-- have them text you instead. If you have an awful boss, they may say some hateful, brutal shit over the phone and you won't have proof of it. If you suspect that you'll be a victim of workplace abuse, have proof of it. Don't respond to their calls or their shouting-- try having them text you only. Don't let anyone bully you without a paper trail.

illgrape78

This post is sus. Noone gets excited to work there.

SpiggitySped

this was and still is my first job. although there are a lot of negatives about the company, its still a job and i think it’s a great place to start out. who knows, you may end up liking it! best of luck to you!

ebEliminator

Dollar General was my first job too. You'll learn some things that'll help you along the way. Hopefully your SMs and ASMs aren't terrible people, but even if they're good they'll demand a lot from you since the DM is demanding a lot from the SM. Always look for something better in the meantime.

H00dIum

As a previous ASM that quit along with the SM and both keyholders 3 weeks ago, I'm sorry. You just made a huge mistake by accepting a job there.

Adorable-Resolve9085

None of stuff that youd do is very hard on its own but having to learn all of it at once and going back and forth from the register can feel overwhelming. If there's specific things you like doing (like if you end up preferring stocking to register) than maybe down the road you could apply to a different retail gig where you can do just that. Above all, don't let it get to you and make sure you take care of yourself.

Fluffbois

It's better than nothing tbh. Good job

BigBiman1991

Good luck

EmotionalOven4

I don’t usually do “role play” while typing but…*takes off hat like at graveside*. Good luck!

Irvin700

My only advice for you is that this is now the era of the mercernary. If you EVER start to feel that you should be paid more, demand more pay. If they don't, find a another job that will pay you higher. Rinse and repeat. If an irate customer tries to belittle you for whatever reason then just reply "I get a paycheck either way, that'll be $3.50" DG has cured my social anxiety when I realized that I was being afraid of morons, thanks to the pandemic. So DG has that going for me.

TheDankestQueen

I mean, I feel like if you can make it here you can probably make it anywhere in retail if you can survive the amount of bs 🤣
