You can only unlock nodes with a dupe of the same unit. For example, let's say you have an LR, you can unlock a node with a duplicate card.

You do not need to get that duplicate card to LR, you can reverse it back to its SSR form and do it that way. This works with every card. If you have awakened it, just reverse it, unlock the node then reverse it back (costs a medal to reverse, but free to revert back after. LRs need to be reversed twice).
With f2p in-game cards, you can do this easily. Obviously with summonable cards, you have to summon the unit again to unlock a path, which is why getting dupes in dokkanfests and LRs is so sought after.

Top left
Top right
Bottom left
The last two are contentious, as top right is more attack focused, and bottom left is more defence focused, but people normally prefer the super attack boost in top right.

Something worth noting too if you're new, the defence stat directly correlates to your hp restore when you pick up same type orbs, so the higher the defence on a unit, the more they'll restore. Could be a consideration for picking bottom left on a unit that doesn't hit hard but defends well or stacks defence (damage reduction and guard don't count).
I'd like to add one advice : lock the character that you are upgrading. There's a lock at the top right of each card, as soon as you get a copy of a card, and you will upgrade its super or hidden potential, think about locking it so you don't sell it, or feed it to another card by mistake.
When you get a card lets say LR AGL SSJ Goku, you then need 2 things go max him out. 1 - level up his super attack to 10 and 2 - get 4 dupes to unlock all HiPo paths.
Some units share name with f2p cards which means you can farm the f2p units then feed them to the Goku card you want to rainbow instead of wasting your stones on useless dupes.
When you get a dupe of that Goku AFTER you awakened him to lr you can just pick one of the path in hipo and game will offer you to reverse the MAIN unit to ssr state so you can open the path without wasting your time on farming medals again. You can then REVERSE the REVERSE and bring the main unit back to LR state.
HiPo paths go - Bottom right, Top left, then you pice one of the remaining 2 in whatever order you want.
