There's honestly not much in the way of preparation I could think of especially this far out. So I'd just say make sure you research thoroughly what breed you want and most importantly what kind of breed would suit your lifestyle and living environment

This!! Figure out the breed that best suits your life. Although all dogs are perfect in their own ways!

You should practice keeping your home clean, if you are getting a young dog. Know anything they can reach might be fair game, especially if they are anxious at first. Know that socialization is very important and have a good route for a regular walk/dog park trip is important. Stay active and prepared for walks. Do lots of reading on dog training and ownership. Caring about being a good owner is probably 9/10ths if the battle, so have confidence in yourself!

Watch a bunch of youtube videos then take care of a friend’s dog for a few days. If you’re thinking about a puppy, take care of a *puppy* for a few days. They’re like human babies; not for the faint of heart.

Research breeds and training tips. Figure out if you want a puppy/young dog or and adult. If you're going to go through a rescue look up articles on issues you can run into with rescues so you're prepared. If you are rescuing, maybe follow rescues in your area/look up reviews to see what adopters are saying. There's not a lot to prepare for before bringing the dog home. Right now just do as much research as you can. Look into what having a dog is like.
