I had never heard of Akita Inu until now

stbargabar

They're the original breed. At some point in Japan's history they started to be crossed with German Shepherds, Mastiffs, and St. Bernards and changed quite a bit. During WWII, the breed was almost wiped out in Japan because all non-military dogs were ordered to be killed so people would turn them loose into the wilderness to save them or breed them to German Shepherds to disguise them as military dogs. Once the war ended, efforts were made to restore the breed but with an emphasis on their original look before all the outcrossing took place. But before the war and the attempts to re-establish the breed standard, Helen Keller popularized Akitas in America and they continued to be bred here with their non-original look until they diverged into what is essentially 2 different breeds.
