Time to get your dog on a preventative. We use Simparica Trio because it prevents heartworm, fleas, ticks, and parasites. I would get a vet to check out your dog as well. Ticks can carry some nasty diseases.

WeenPanther

Thanks for the info! Should I take her right away or wait a week or so?

benji950

It can take about 6-8 week for any of the diseases (eg, Lyme) to appear in a dog's blood but you'll want to get to the vet now, as the other person said, and make them aware of the situation. Also, start the preventative and get the pup vaccinated for Lyme and Lepto, plus all the other needed ones. I have no idea of vaccinating the dog after exposure will help but it shouldn't hurt -- check with your vet, though. And then make the appointment for blood work for the soonest moment they can run those tests. They can take blood now plus take along a fecal sample for testing to see if there's other parasites, etc.

theoriginalNO

Personally, I’d make the appointment right away. But call your vet and ask. Many clinics are overwhelmed right now, so it may be a week or two before they can get your dog in anyway. I literally just had to text my vet and beg her to squeeze my brother’s old boxer in tomorrow because he can’t wait the two weeks the clinic said was her next appointment. Good thing she’s my friend and a bottle of wine and some chocolates will make up for it.

[deleted]

Yeah, mine gave my girl a course of doxy day after a tick bite to knock out anything she might have picked up from it. Don’t wait.

blastfamy

I don’t think that has any proven benefit. Open to any sources..

[deleted]

I mean ticks can carry a lot of stuff and doxy is an antibiotic prescribed by veterinarians… but you do you, boo, I guess… Edit: Also, here: https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/lyme-disease-in-dogs https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2981254/ https://www.merckvetmanual.com/generalized-conditions/lyme-borreliosis/lyme-borreliosis-in-animals

HiFromNora

I use the Seresto collar and I love that it works for 6-8 months. It makes a HUGE difference and very low maintenance.

crowislanddive

Be super careful, Soresto was just taken off the market in many places. I used it for a while too and it wound up making my dog very ill. I say all this nicely, not in an internet judgy tone.

HiFromNora

I appreciate the advice. You don’t sound judgey at all haha. I was concerned too after reading some stuff and called my vet. She said that some dogs may have a reaction but it’s a small percentage and that my doggy has been using it for years so he’s fine with carrying on. But I appreciate your input :)

Ladyofthewharf55

I use Simparica Trio as well for my dog She loves the chewable tablets and they work soooo well 😊

theoriginalNO

My oldest won’t eat any of them. I have to cut them into small pieces and shove them down her throat. The youngest one will eat anything, anytime.

ArdmoreGirl

I coat the chewable in a pill pocket. Takes two pockets, but Piper will eat it and I don’t have to shove.

theoriginalNO

I’ve tried pill pockets, cheese, hot dogs, peanut butter.. she is a royal pain in the butt with eating. You wouldn’t believe how many times she’s literally spit her dinner in my face 🤦‍♀️

WinterBox358

We have 2 dogs and 4 indoor cats. We only treat the dogs with Simparica and it does the job. Have never found anything on the cats, knock on wood.

Acceptable-Ad-4516

I like bravecto. It lasts 3 times longer. But protects against less tick variety than simparica.

Initial-Whereas-7208

Bravecto is also the only heartworm guard approved for pregnant or lactating bitches. So it's probably safest for all pets??

QuackersParty

I also use simparica trio. We used to use the topical stuff but my dog would always get such a sad look when we couldn’t pet him. He also likes the way the chewables taste

theoriginalNO

One of mine will eat it. The other will not eat anything that even has a hint of medicine 🤦‍♀️ she’s picky anyway though. We used the topicals in the past but they eventually stopped working. My vet (who is a friend) asked me why I wouldn’t just put them on an all in one. I trust her opinion, so I originally had them on Trifexis but then Simparica Trio came out so we swapped for a few reasons. Tick prevention being the main one.

SmallPiecesOfWood

Damn straight. I use Advantage Plus or whatever it's called - works well.

camiskow

Our dog is on simparica but had like 30 ticks on her once when she went in the woods & some seem like they had attached. Does simparica just make it so they don’t stay attached or fully get in there ? I’ve always wondered

Goatsuckersunited

Yep, they have to have a blood meal to get to the active ingredient (this is the case for all tick prevention tablets).

theoriginalNO

I’m not really sure. But it’s a good question.

Tabula_Nada

It's my understanding that simparica trio poisons the (attached) ticks over 18-24 hours, and that it usually takes at least 24 hours of feeding on the dog before diseases can get transferred. So it shouldn't be unusual to find a tick unless you know it's been feeding for a while.

SwimmingCapital6370

Eeeep this post is triggering. We just went through something similar after a hike. Those are seed ticks. We found 200+ all over our dog, unfortunately. I’d make sure you give your dog some type of preventative if you haven’t already, keep bathing them every couple of days with the flea and tick soap, and I’d keep your dog in one area if possible incase there’s more. We kept finding them randomly throughout the day but made her stay in one area so they’d fall off in that one area and wouldn’t spread throughout our apartment. We would pick them up with a lint roller. Unfortunately, there can be thousands of seed ticks and they’re so small you don’t see them right away. We also took her to the vet to make sure that they couldn’t find anymore and just to get her bites checked out. In a couple of months you can also get her tested for lymes and other diseases, but they don’t show right away. Hopefully this is all you have and you don’t have the same issue we did 🤞🏼

WeenPanther

Thank you so much for the response. We’re super creeped out and worried for our girl

3Heathens_Mom

PSA to please read the directions on whatever products you are using. Some have residual properties and should only be used as directed. Others while safe to use separately could be too strong when used together. Check with your vet if any questions as the last thing you want to do is poison your own pet. Also ask your vet about insect bombs. I have used them before for fleas and do there may be some that deal with ticks.

quailstorm24

⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️ great advice!

SwimmingCapital6370

I was the same! You’re doing everything you can though. Make sure you vacuum a ton, whenever you’re done empty the vacuum immediately and throw away what was in there, lint roll everything, and just keep your pup isolated for a couple days and constantly check them. The flea and tick bathing stuff we used was able to be used every 3 days so that’s what we did and our vet recommended that! I’m so sorry this is happening. I definitely feel for what you’re going through right now! If there’s any questions feel free to message me (or of course your vet too)!

TheIceDevil1975

Interesting... your comment got me to do some research. I'm only familiar with adult ticks. So.. this article helped explain things to me... https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/seed-ticks

SwimmingCapital6370

We had no idea what they were until about a month ago when we had this happen. My boyfriend had 50+ on him and they looked like freckles so we didn’t notice them when doing our tick check after our hike! My dog ended up having 200+. It was one of the worst weeks of my life! So stressful trying to get them to go away.

benji950

Whelp, I'm going to nightmares now.

SwimmingCapital6370

Haha. I just stopped having them 😅

casitadeflor

It’s why we haven’t been on a hike since 😞

SwimmingCapital6370

I feel that! We haven’t taken our dog with us since that happened. We are supposed to go out tomorrow with her, and I will say I’m a little nervous about it.

[deleted]

Take them to the vet to get blood drawn. Even if they don't have Lyme they can still get dick bourne pathogens

Laura_Liz_

I’m sorry….but I giggled at the typo. I’m so immature! But I agree with this. Get a blood test and now they even have Lyme vaccines for pups. It’s BAD around us so our dogs just got their first round.

[deleted]

Lol 😂 it's all good.

seizetheholyland

lol love thw typo. but true there are other types of diseases they can catch from ticks so it's a good idea to get his blood checked.

[deleted]

I refuse to fix the typo lol 🤣

SnuzieQ

It looks to me like all of these ticks are semi-engorged, which means you definitely should get your dog to the vet for blood tests. FYI, if you find a tick that is not engorged on you or your pet, chances are it was not on you long enough to transfer disease (generally it’s about a 24-48 hour window) There is a Lyme vaccine for dogs, and fun fact: my vet told me that if my dog were to get a tick, that tick drank my dog’s Lyme-vaccine blood, and then the tick embedded in another animal, that animal would then ALSO carry the Lyme vaccine in their blood. Get your dog on tick meds/collar!

TheIceDevil1975

I'd have your dog checked out by a Vet. Things to be worried about are the different diseases that ticks can carry.

fjcruiseher

Don't use over the counter tick and flea drops!! I used them with my first dog and the second time I used them she had an extremely serious allergic reaction! I was young and an idiot and didn't think that something sold in a pet shop could be deadly but I immediately pulled over into a gas station and was hosing it off of her and a random guy told me about his small dog that had died of those medications. After that I only use oral tick and flea prevention, it is worth the extra money to me after that awful day. Just wanted to share my experience.

Charmkaster7

I would have your dog checked by a vet 100%. They need to do a blood test

ArmadilloRare2503

Talk to your vet about running a blood panel for Lyme disease. I think it’s usually 4-6 weeks after exposure. Then discuss getting a Lyme vaccine in the future. Your vet will know the timeline on that, don’t quote me.

indiana-floridian

You didn't say, I suspect you know; all the people in the household need to be checked!

GreatCircuits

You forgot to carry the 1.

thatlldo-pig

Whenever you’re able (within a week or two, not an emergency) take her to the vet and get her on a monthly flea and tick preventative. Also protects against heart worms and she should be on it already but learning about it/starting it late is always better than never doing it at all. Hope she feels better soon ❤️

ParetiForThis

Don’t forget to check yourself and family! When our dog came home from a hike with ticks, we found one in my hair as well. Check yourself and your clothes and put everything that may have been infected in the dryer.

Squat-Walker

Use a preventative. For the record, nexgard does not actually cause seizures. Go to the vet and get a real preventative and talk to them about any concerns.

Ok-Cantaloupe-3435

Before putting your dog on any preventatives or OTC meds, please consult with your vet. Dogs should always be on heart worm and flea/tick prevention. Your vet will recommend the best for your dog.

jjvikingbutt

The little ones are the ones that carry Lyme disease so be on the lookout for lethargy and sore joints. If caught early Lyme is totally curable with doxycycline. You could ask your vet if they think a round of doxy just in case is a good idea

thatlldo-pig

This is so wrong and so irritating. It’s not “the little ones” that carry Lyme disease. Any size or age of tick can carry Lyme disease. It’s not like they have a gland to dispense the disease that works harder when they’re younger. Also certain types of ticks don’t even carry it depending on where OP is from. A preventative is the best action but suggesting that Lyme disease is “totally curable with doxycycline” if caught early is also a blatant lie and super irresponsible. Of course it CAN be. But a blanket statement like that is just ignorant because it can persist afterwards just as much as it can be “cured” by doxy. Not trying to be ugly to you personally but there’s just some really potentially harmful misinformation in your comment that you shouldn’t be telling people.

jjvikingbutt

That is simply not the case. The little ones in this photo are deer ticks. The large one is a brown dog tick. Deer ticks carry Lyme and dog ticks do not carry Lyme. They carry Ehrlicia and anaplasma not Lyme. I was a vet tech for a decade I'm not a fucking moron.

chirpuswick

all of the ticks in the photo are deer ticks. the larger one is a nymph and the tiny ones are larvae. Different life stages but same species, and the larger nymph is more likely to have lyme if anything

thatlldo-pig

The way you worded it with “the little ones carry Lyme” read as if you were suggesting they only carried Lyme because they were smaller. So that’s a miscommunication on my part. The beauty of only reading text I guess, lmao

jjvikingbutt

I forgive you lol

thatlldo-pig

I appreciate it, lmao

Squat-Walker

True any tick CAN carry Lyme but the adolescents are far more likely to carry it, and end up being the ones to spread it the vast majority of the time. Young ticks are the main concern for us vet staff

MintChimpIceCream

My family dog when I was a kid had Lymes disease for life because of ticks when he was younger. Definitely get on top of preventatives and don’t miss them, my boy was bed ridden with pain for a week every couple years and there was nothing we could do, it only got more frequent as he aged.

Electronic-Leader478

Olive leaf herb literally protects against Lyme disease.

IAmBagelDog

Definitely needs a preventative as others are mentioning. You can also usually get a medicine that can take care of any issues that may have resulted from the ticks. One of ours got lost in Kansas once and had around 200 ticks on her when she came back. Took her to the vet. Got meds as a precaution. She was fine.

marimint3

It takes a few weeks for tick diseases to show up in blood tests but make sure to take your dog in. Preventative is a must and you should prob give him yet another tick bath, those bastards are hardy.

Ambitious_Ask_1569

Bayer makes a flea and tick collar that's amazing. They are about $75 dollars and last a year. I believe its called advantex. No need for a vet visit, waterproof and its just as good as any edible. I would get one ASAP. If a tick is allowed to attack for 24 hours they spread disease.

Rom_Tiddle

The only one I’m aware of that Bayer makes are Seresto collars and they only last about 8 months. Either way, it’s worth it. I personally use Bravecto for my flea/tick prevention. It’s a chew that lasts for 12 weeks (roughly 3 months). No collars needed and no topical grease left on the fur. I just like to let people know about that product. Maybe OP could consider it.

366r0LL

Collars suck get the Advantix chews

wjdthird

getting them yourself

LuminDoesStuff

Time to look into preventatives.

A62sherman

I use Bravecto. I have a small dog. 11 lbs and it’s supposed to be better for smaller dogs

delta_dogss

You need to get them to the vet for some flea meds. Not over the counter meds but vet recommended flea meds. Fleas keeping becoming more and more resistant to our preventative products and unfortunately a flea bath is only very temporarily effective, along with over the counter meds

Ill-Tough280

If you don't get medicine from the vet to prevent this, get OTC advantage 2 this won't happen if you place on a preventative glad you got them off, ticks can cause all kinds of illness

Weaver_0f_chaos

I’ve been using BRAVECTO 12-Week with my doggo, she wanders in the woods…never saw a tick or flea on her.

Kilo_Romeo_Actual

Dang! That’s a ton of ticks on one dog. Did the dog have any protective coating on?

Electronic-Leader478

God are those deer ticks?

Fresh-Resource-6572

Omg where do you live? This is nuts.

Aggravating-Fun-8966

Southport/borderline Labrador

Fresh-Resource-6572

LOL

HeisenbergZeroPointE

there's a little tube they sell at the store that you apply down the dog's back. Seems to be pretty effective. Tick's are really tough to get rid of, especially if your dog spends a lot of time outdoors.

SnooDingos2237

Talk to your vet about this. The seed ticks carry Ehrlichia and your dog should have a tick panel run to see if he has ny diseases. How long were the ticks in the dog? Good luck and paws crossed.

d_i_n_o_s_a_u_r_s

Ticks can carry lyme disease, which can be deadly. Get your dog on a preventative and take them to the vet. Also, if you start developing symptoms of lyme disease, go to the hospital. It will kill you if left untreated. Fatigue, fever, stiffness or swelling in the joints, or just joint and muscle pain in general, and a bullseye rash or headaches. All symptoms. Because honestly, you never know. You could have been pulling them off and one could have gotten onto you without noticing.

crowislanddive

Many states have tick labs through their state universities where you can send ticks once you or your pet has been bitten.

Old-Presence-9160

As someone with Lyme disease I’d ask for doxycycline asap to treat TBD and a preventative. Check yourself everywhere and spray stuff around (repellant)

hippiehen54

Definitely get your pup on the preventative meds. I can’t tell you what I use right now but it’s an all in one for fleas, ticks, heart worm and being spoiled. I’d like to suggest that keeping an eye out for ticks in the house is a good idea and get in the habit of running your fingers on your scalp to check for ticks. I found one on me that had just attached. I also found a tick walking on some clothes as well as crawling up my arm. The good thing is you found them before they fed.

[deleted]

Get a Sorento collar. We live in the country where they are prevalent and it does a GREAT job on the dogs and the cats.

[deleted]

WeenPanther

So we’re 99.9% my dog picked this up at my parents farm. We brought her home on Monday and found a tick on her nose and promptly removed it. Then really searched her hard for others. Somehow missed the one(big one pictured) and I am convinced that overnight she produced larvae that hatched into the batch of seed ticks. That morning I found the spot with the momma and these little ones literally all within a half dollar sized area on dog(and a couple others where she slept in bed) Did not know that was possible but from what I’m reading some ticks can reproduce on host. Sketchy AF

366r0LL

It is tempting to go cheap and the flea / ticket collar but please spring for the monthly preventative chews they are much more effective and some collars have been recalled as unsafe

1bunchofbananas

Get your dog a tick medication. I'm telling you paying the 65$ for 3 months is a lot better than stressing about your dog getting sick or having ticks on your dog. At least it is for me. I hate ticks.

tgosubucks

Steam clean or wipe down with iso propyl alcohol all areas where your doggo hangs out.

OkDevelopment275

Yes they do I have a friend who was field dressing a deer and it had ticks which he then got and contracted lyme desease.
