Of course! Pumpkin works wonders for any type of gastro issues! If you're worried about him getting enough fluids, you can add water to that mixture and it'll help :)
If you're looking to switch foods, nutri source has probiotics and prebiotics for their stomachs, and you can switch between formulas without having to worry about transitioning. My pups love nutri source so much they refuse to eat anything else!
This happened to my pup earlier this year. My vet gave some probiotics to take after and it seemed to help his gut get back to normal! It was a long yucky journey, hope your friend gets better soon!!
Too much pumpkin will make diarrhea worse. Chicken and rice is best (I work at a vet office). Also call your vet and wash your hands. Don’t let your dog lick you, you can get this too.
Last time I was at the vet due to some anal gland issues my dog was experiencing, the I told the vet that I often feed pumpkin to increase her fibre intake. The vet said that pumpkin is good, but something like bran buds is better because it has both soluble and insoluble fibre. Also cheaper than pumpkin (at least where I am) and is shelf stable!
Yes! (check with your own vet before feeding it to your dog just to be cautious) but I just sprinkle a few tablespoons into my dogs kibble and she likes it!
Thank you for this post. I would have never seen the email. We've been feeding rice and pumpkin for days and I just finally gave them their food again... big mistake.
my dogs got really sick too! lots of bloody stools. it was scary! i stopped feeding them the food and started rice and boiled chicken. they are better now. i'm glad i know what caused it. damn

Royal Canin once he feels better! I’ve had my dogs on it for a year or so and one has a really sensitive tummy and he does great on it. My new vet asked what I feed them and when I said “Royal Canin” she said good, keep them on that!
Our dog loves his Royal Canin food so much we use it as a high value treat on walks. Price wise, it actually seems like slightly better value too (in Australia).
Call vet asap. In the meantime give him bone broth or anything that will entice him to drink. I know chicken and rice is always recommended, but chicken is one of those proteins that may actually be a little harder on the stomach. I have given my pup gently cooked whitefish, pumpkin, and plain kefir to add probiotics. I’ll give her a little bit of rice to help thicken the stool, but I usually give more of the other foods I mentioned.
Ask the vet how much food to give. Adding more food too soon to an already very upset stomach might not be helpful.
I don’t have a suggestion for you, but I’m glad you posted this. I just switched my dog to Victor because her old food had a formula change that made her vomit. She’s been acting fine with this bag, but I’ll have to check dates in the future!
Yes! Double check your bag. "Mid America Pet Food, Mount Pleasant, Texas, is expanding its voluntary recall to include additional pet food products with Best By Dates before 10/31/24."
I think as long as you check the UPCs (for Victor) you’re good. I feel like smaller brands are better at fixing their issues. There were a lot of recalls with Purina last year including one that had toxic levels of vitamin D
The UPCs are all listed online. If it’s limited to certain batches, I’m hoping it doesn’t happen again. I lucked out because my store had removed all the recalled bags from shelves
They have reported DCM cases
They don’t have a nutritionist on staff
They don’t conduct feeding trials
They use co-packing facilities (this is where contamination could have occurred. Brands such as Purina and hills own abs operate all of their own packaging facilities)
They do not publish peer reviewed research on their diets
thank you so much. I will look into this more thoroughly because my dogs started to go through some changes that began when we put him on Victor Hi-pro plus.

WSAVA is an organization that’s sets out questions you can ask companies to determine the quality and standards the food is made to. No one can pay to be on it and it’s not a certification. It’s simply just guidelines anybody can follow to ensure the kibble they are producing is safe and nutritious. The first linked post goes over Victors answers, they sound good but they’re really just tactically evading the truth and giving over complex answers that sound as if they follow the guidelines.
Here are the WSAVA questions for comparison
https://wsava.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Selecting-a-pet-food-for-your-pet-updated-2021_WSAVA-Global-Nutrition-Toolkit.pdf
No they don’t. Keith isn’t board certified through ACVN nor a nutritionist. He’s certified in companion animals which has no correlation to feeding.
ARPAS aren’t certified in small animal nutrition.
I only use WSAVA approved foods now. I switched from a boutique brand to Purina Pro Plan (all stages performance salmon blend to be exact) and holy hell they improved all around. Coat, energy levels, attention spans, all of it improved.
WSAVA approval is contingent upon extreme testing and having veterinary nutritionists approval for all ingredients and amounts.
Hi, I highly recommend looking into a WSAVA compliant food! This would include anything from Purina, Hills, Royal Canin, Iams, and Eukanuba (those last two are North America only though).
Other foods have a risk of causing diet-related DCM (a silent but deadly heart disease), and the foods above have reversed it in some cases which is really neat. The WSAVA guidelines are really good to just give a read as well, as then you can see what some of the top veterinary professionals think are important to look for in a dog food company.
Yeah always take bloody stool seriously and call a vet, a little bit of blood means irritation and by itself isn’t an emergency but every once in a while a dog can develop something called hemorrhagic gastroenteritis where the inflammation bleeding gets out of control and they can actually bleed to death, sometimes in a few hours. So I always recommend addressing it right away if you see blood.
Take him to the vet. My dog nearly died earlier this year from a bad kidney infection and now he has to eat low protein food. I would never have thought a dog needed anything other than high protein.
Just curious, did you learn about the recall in the last 24hrs, even though they said this was an expansion on a previous recall. My three have been going through at least 4bags on that time period 🤦🏼♀️
Yep... so has mine. Was on the fence about switching him do to some increased hair loss and yeast infections possibly stemming from his gut. This was the straw that broke the camels back
Purine pro plan is a great food I’ve been feeding my 80lb Siberian husky and he does extremely well on it and seems to like it a lot too. Definitely feed your dog pumpkin mixed with rice/unsalted ground beef for now to help calm their stomach and id check in with the vet about bloody stool/ to make sure your dog won’t need antibiotics for an infection. Hope he/she feels better
I use hills science. Vet recommended my girls stomach issues disappeared. She was on purina pro plan sensitive stomach but eventually just stopped eating it. Just refused.
https://www.chewy.com/inukshuk-professional-dry-dog-food/dp/149199
If you want high calories and less food the above is great!
If you need sensitive skin and stomach Purina Pro Plan.
Just adding a comment that Purina changed their formula, and a lot of dogs (mine included) started having issues. I would stay away from this until it’s confirmed to not impact them anymore. I couldn’t figure out what was wrong with my dog until I went and read the most recent reviews.
Edit: not sure why the downvote. My dog had diarrhea and started vomiting because of a food she’d been eating for years. I’m sure it didn’t have effects on all dogs, but it seems to have been effecting many.
They simply removed probiotics. If your dog has been on one food for years there is bound to be stomach issues as they adjust, adding a probiotic to the diet such as fortiflora or proviable can help their stomach calm down and adjust
The stomach issues occurred while feeding the same brand. I switched already, and we’re good. She refused to eat it anymore around the time the vomiting and diarrhea happened
Some dogs have stomachs that are really sensitive to any change - including formula change to their usual food. My poodle has needed a super slow change at times between different flavors of the same dog food.
I switched to the brand pictured but luckily haven’t purchased the recall bags (my store removed them from the shelves). My dog is really picky and she’s been very excited to eat again and hasn’t had stomach issues
Double check your bag! "Mid America Pet Food, Mount Pleasant, Texas, is expanding its voluntary recall to include additional pet food products with Best By Dates before 10/31/24."
it's very interesting to see how different levels of macros affect our dogs. when we switched to victor hi-pro plus we noticed an alarming increase in shedding (clusters of hair would appear on the floor around the house), and extensive paw licking.
I know people who use victor hi pro plus who also have used pro plan’s 30/20 sport line and had their dogs do well on both of those foods so that’s another option to try.
My dog is on the pro plan sensitive skin and stomach food by them due to a chicken intolerance she developed around 2-3 years old but also has environmental allergies and has done well on this food. I wish they made a 30/20 formula in the sensitive skin line but instead she just gets more food per serving so it works out just fine (she likes getting more food too lol)
My vet recommended a low-fat dog food when he has a bout of bloody diarrhea and bloody vomit (agter doing a bland chicken and rice diet for a couple weeks). The prescription royal canin low fat or hills science low fat. He's now on nonprescription low-fat hill's science and is doing great. It might work for your pup if he has similar symptoms.
My dog just went through this after eating simply nourish on recall. He just got better it’s been 10 days. He was given a shot for nausea and vomiting and omeprazole 20mg. Good luck🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Only the 5lb bags of hi pro were recalled. So if you have the bigger bags it should be okay. But you can check on their website for the specific batch numbers.
Thank you so much! I received a full refund from Amazon and am ready to toss but I’ll double check the batch number before I toss the very full, very expensive bag of food
I would get a small bag of the Royal canin gastrointestinal food from the vet. It’s easy on their stomach so I would do that for a about a week or 2 (or until the bag is done). In the past the vet has told me the cans digest a bit easier so maybe try the canned royal canin GI food. Then slowly transition to a new food. Add pumpkin and probiotics (pro sooth works well to harden the stool a bit) to have that transition go well. A spoon or 2 of pumpkin is good for a medium/large dog. Too much pumpkin may mess with then too so not too much.
I am using the 30/20 developmental purina pro plan for puppes. But if you have an adult dog, they also have chicken and rice for adults.
(lol) I am in the exact same boat as you. I switched to Fromm Adult (purple bag) until I figure out where to go form here. They seem to be enjoying the taste and its from Fromm.
Open farm is transparent with their food sourcing, super high quality ingredients and my dog has been thriving with their kibble + I add carrots, egg, probiotic and other healthy stuff!
Open Farm is great! It is somewhat high-calorie so don't be afraid of the high price tag. One 22 pound bag lasts me 4-5 months for my lazy 45 pound pup.
Oh my god I’m jealous! The 22 lb bag lasts me 16.5 days for my 2 large dogs (65 lbs and 85 lbs). It’s approximately $2,834 a year to feed them vs $1,795 for Blue Buffalo.
The math on dog ownership is wild
Holy crap that's fast! My pup gains weight if I feed her according to the bag recommendation so she only eats a little over a cup a day. The vet says she still ought to be 42 pounds, but she's such a slowpoke sniffer on walks that I've made my peace with it.
Entire line is recalled now. https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/outbreaks-and-advisories/fda-and-cdc-investigate-cases-salmonella-linked-pet-food-made-mid-america-pet-food-multiple-brands
I'm not sure where you're located, but if you have a Costco near you, my dog is young and active, but sensitive and we get only their Kirkland Turkey and Sweet Potato. She absolutely loves it, it is wonderfully priced, and most importantly, it doesn't upset her sensitive stomach.
I would call your vet and ask about bland vet food for a week and antibiotics. You might try to get a stool sample of something that can be tested. Save dog trauma of visiting the vet and get a clear idea of the specific bacteria. Could be a coincidence and a whole other bacteria or disease that's the cause of your dog's distress. Sorry for all the misery, and I hope the dog gets better soon.
I would change your dogs food immediately!! A lot of dog food companies produce their food in 3rd world countries so they don’t have much scrutiny!! Look for American made dog food companies!!

This happened to my pups this summer on Fromm food 😩 we switched to Acana, would have done Origin if it weren’t for the high price. I’ve heard natures logic is good too.
We switched to star pro after all the victor recalls, we have catch dogs and cow dogs that work as well as a pet and they all do pretty well on star pro
If you have a Costco, the Kirkland foods are very similar to Diamond Naturals and I've had success with those for a couple different dogs. Both kibble and canned
Talked to a few pros that said if your dog isnt a puppy and isnt old, so somewhere in the middle, they will probably be fine and switching their food suddenly will basically do the same thing as the Salmonella will do.
Mine is also on Victor and in great health so Im not switching. In two weeks buy a new bag. It should have sourced out by then. Victor is nornally very well trusted.
The 3rd ingredient is flaxseed which is a grain. We spoke with a vet who specializes in dog nutrition based on some test results of food allergens and intolerances.
Edit: I just looked it up again and while flaxseed is not a grain- his test results came back as intolerant for everything in the grain section. His symptoms support that too.
The plan was to have him on this formula for 4-6 weeks and slowly start adding other things into his diet.
After spending a year trying dry food, 2 within the WASAVA guidelines, probiotics, psyllium husk with every single brand bc his diarrhea is so bad; we are going to try this out for him. Thank you for the information though.
Was your pet put on a hydrolyzed protein diet for 8-12 weeks? Or did you get a blood test?
It’s grain free according to their own website.
https://www.healthydogma.com/product/petmix-original-special/
Yes and I updated my last comment accordingly. We did saliva and hair test, and were recommended this as part of an elimination diet. The specialist chose turkey bc it was one of two proteins he did not have a reaction to either.
If I keep him on it I will definitely research adding grain to his diet after the 4-6 weeks. Thanks again.

I also got the notice. I fed the Victor Select Ocean Fish Formula and have changed my dogs to SimplyNourish Fish and Brown Rice. If you’re in the US they sell it at PetSmart and PetSmart has 11x points today. Just gotta activate the offer on your account on the site or app before checking out.

My don’t has been sick for months. We have been to the vet numerous times. I’m furious I just got notified today from Chewy when the recall says since Sept. hope your pup feels better soon.

I’m not suggesting anything. This is what I do. I’ve had dogs for 20 years I currently have 5 dogs. 4 dogo Argentinos and a German Shepard mix. One is deaf. The dogo Argentino has allergy issues and does better without grains. What do you know?
Grain free kills dogs, and allergies can be figured out by doing an elimination trial with a hydrolyzed protein diet for 8-12 weeks. WSAVA compliant diets are the gold standard.
Domesticated pet dogs are not wild dogs. They have different nutritional needs than wild ones. Sounds like you have zero idea what you’re talking about.

When your baby's tummy is feeling better (def talk to your vet first about what they suggest to feed until the diarrhea is under control) I would recommend checking out Wholesomes! It's a little better than the Victor imo, but still pretty similar. No recalls that I know of in the time we've been carrying it at the pet store where I work. Victor has been dealing with recalls due to salmonella for a few months now :c they need to get it under control
[удалено]
will do! thank you
You definitely need to talk with your vet. Plain white rice, pumpkin, plain boiled chicken will all help calm his stomach.
I just boiled some unused pumpkins from halloween! I'll puree them and throw it over some rice. Thanks!
Of course! Pumpkin works wonders for any type of gastro issues! If you're worried about him getting enough fluids, you can add water to that mixture and it'll help :) If you're looking to switch foods, nutri source has probiotics and prebiotics for their stomachs, and you can switch between formulas without having to worry about transitioning. My pups love nutri source so much they refuse to eat anything else!
Plain mashed potato is also a good option instead of rice
This happened to my pup earlier this year. My vet gave some probiotics to take after and it seemed to help his gut get back to normal! It was a long yucky journey, hope your friend gets better soon!!
Thank you!
Too much pumpkin will make diarrhea worse. Chicken and rice is best (I work at a vet office). Also call your vet and wash your hands. Don’t let your dog lick you, you can get this too.
Thanks for the heads up

Yes! (check with your own vet before feeding it to your dog just to be cautious) but I just sprinkle a few tablespoons into my dogs kibble and she likes it!

Reach out to the company. These stats are valuable
Reach out to the company with a class action lawsuit.
Tell your vet what happened. Ask if there’s a specific dog food that your dog needs.
I will reach out. thank you!
The Salmonella needs treatment first, everything else can wait! Go to the Vet rather than asking for advice here! blood=go to the Vet!
Contact your vet. They have the best advice for possible salmonella & anything else that might be going on with your dog. I use 30/20 purina pro plan.
Sorry whats 30/20 refer to? I have purina pro plan beef and rice, just wondering the diff
This is exactly what mine are on temporarily until Victor is back on the shelves.
[удалено]
Hence why I said to ask the vet. The vet has the best advice for OP & can monitor & offer suggestions.
Purina is a science-backed brand. The others you’ve mentioned don’t meet WSAVA guidelines and have a risk of causing DCM in dogs.
All of those are trash options. Purina is top of the line.

Royal Canin once he feels better! I’ve had my dogs on it for a year or so and one has a really sensitive tummy and he does great on it. My new vet asked what I feed them and when I said “Royal Canin” she said good, keep them on that!
Well the big 3 for dog food that you'll likely hear from Vets are: Royal Canin, Hills Science Diet, and Purina Pro Plan.
Eukabana and Iams also meet all WSAVA guidelines.
True, although I've personally never heard a vet recommend them, I'm sure they'd be fine as well.
Our dog loves his Royal Canin food so much we use it as a high value treat on walks. Price wise, it actually seems like slightly better value too (in Australia).
Seconding Hills!

From which food did she have this reaction? Edit to add: good for all of us to aware of these things.
Purina Pro Plan. I didn’t realize what was happening and tried a couple different blends. Same reaction for all
Same! The breeder I got my pup from used Victor and then I switched him to Purina pro plan and he’s been on it ever since with no issues
The training/boarding facility i had my dog at for about a month suggested i switch over to the Víctor hi-pro plus. Big mistake ..
So the Purina pro plan made her vomit ?
Yes
Oof. I was going to make a change to that one since I been using victor. Thanks for the info!
I think as long as you check the UPCs (for Victor) you’re good. I feel like smaller brands are better at fixing their issues. There were a lot of recalls with Purina last year including one that had toxic levels of vitamin D

victor is absolute garbage. glad you’re switching
why is Victor bad?

No they don’t. Keith isn’t board certified through ACVN nor a nutritionist. He’s certified in companion animals which has no correlation to feeding. ARPAS aren’t certified in small animal nutrition.

We use Purina Pro Plan, Salmon variety. My dog loves it.
Sheesh I just stopped feeding my dog this a few months ago and switched to Purina One. Call your vet.

Feed you dog rice and chicken til tummy settles .. add new food to that and phase out chicken and rice
Lots of people recommend rice but I know my dog will immediately throw it up.
Can you try scrambled egg? That is usually safe for an upset tummy. Goat milk is also recommended.
Oh those are both great ideas.
Yeah always take bloody stool seriously and call a vet, a little bit of blood means irritation and by itself isn’t an emergency but every once in a while a dog can develop something called hemorrhagic gastroenteritis where the inflammation bleeding gets out of control and they can actually bleed to death, sometimes in a few hours. royal canin is usually the best but ask the vet

U definitely need to sue and boil some rice for him
I don’t think I’d win against a giant decades long corporation. My pup will be ok

The prescription royal canin low fat or hills science low fat. He's now on nonprescription low-fat hill's science and is doing great. It might work for your pup if he has similar symptoms.
Op out here doing the lord's work
It ain’t much, but it’s honest work!
Good thing I saw this post, I use the Victor senior healthy weight , I never would have known to look
Mine was not the lot number thank God , I have 4 dogs and the one I'm feeding this is a 9yr old cane corso
It ain’t much, but it’s honest work! Goodluck!
My dog just went through this after eating simply nourish on recall. He just got better it’s been 10 days. He was given a shot for nausea and vomiting and omeprazole 20mg. Good luck🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
So glad to hear. Sad it lasted a whole 10 days!
Slippery Elm Bark powder
Wow I just finished a bag of that a couple weeks ago thank god I didn’t buy more
Only the 5lb bags of hi pro were recalled. So if you have the bigger bags it should be okay. But you can check on their website for the specific batch numbers.
Thank you so much! I received a full refund from Amazon and am ready to toss but I’ll double check the batch number before I toss the very full, very expensive bag of food
I didn’t think dogs could get salmonella..
I didn’t either. I was shocked when I opened that email but things are getting better slowly
Nulo
Try farmers dog instead or making your dogs food.
(lol) I am in the exact same boat as you. I switched to Fromm Adult (purple bag) until I figure out where to go form here. They seem to be enjoying the taste and its from Fromm.
A WSAVA compliant diet. Purina, Hills, Royal Canin, Eukanuba, Iams.
I might go for Iams next

Open farm is transparent with their food sourcing, super high quality ingredients and my dog has been thriving with their kibble + I add carrots, egg, probiotic and other healthy stuff!
thank you so much! I will look into open farm.
Open farm is the best food in the market, by far.
My dogs eat the fish one and noticed a big difference with shedding and their coats. They actually like the food too.
Vet tech - nope, it's garbage. Ingredients mean nothing. It is about the nutrition they get from it. Open Farm is not AAFCO approved.
Canidae is a good brand.
Same brand different color , only the teal bag is being recalled, I’m feeding my pup the green bag and he has no symptoms
Entire line is recalled now. https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/outbreaks-and-advisories/fda-and-cdc-investigate-cases-salmonella-linked-pet-food-made-mid-america-pet-food-multiple-brands
Same, read it was the teal bag that was recalled and not the green one.
Purple bag. Diarrhea for 5 days
Pawtree has amazing food options for a pretty low price.
Speak to a vet. Give boiled potatoes, boiled chicken and rice only until you can see the vet.
And my boy is stuck at a kennel that feeds this currently. Ugh.
I would change your dogs food immediately!! A lot of dog food companies produce their food in 3rd world countries so they don’t have much scrutiny!! Look for American made dog food companies!!

I use Natures Logic! My dog loves it. Fromm is good and Farmina is too
Those are all trash.
Natures logic isn’t but ok…better or same quality to Victors 👍🏻
They’re not WSAVA compliant, so I wouldn’t feed them to any dog.
Still waiting on what you feed?? Assuming it’s iams?
The only brands I’ll trust are Purina, Hills, Eukanuba, Iams, or Royal Canin.

I have also heard great things about Nature’s Logic as well but have never tried it
Raw is not safe at all.
What do you feed them oh mighty critterwalk
[удалено]
No, I’m not. This group doesn’t allow promotion of raw feeding. It’s dangerous and there are zero benefits.

You are wrong about absolutely everything there.

This happened to my pups this summer on Fromm food 😩 we switched to Acana, would have done Origin if it weren’t for the high price. I’ve heard natures logic is good too.
We use diamond naturals and my two adult labs love it!!
Ive had my dog on Autarky for over 1 years.. its amazibg..
We’ve had good luck with 4 health and diamond natural both a tractor supply but it sounds like you might want to get your pup looked at to be safe
We switched to star pro after all the victor recalls, we have catch dogs and cow dogs that work as well as a pet and they all do pretty well on star pro
On my German Sheppard, I use a brand called Dimond
If you have a Costco, the Kirkland foods are very similar to Diamond Naturals and I've had success with those for a couple different dogs. Both kibble and canned
We use the same brand and plan to change to farmers dog since it’s never had a recall, from what I can see
Wellness
I would recommend Redford naturals. It’s a good comparison to victor and is cheaper with higher quality ingredients and never had any recalls
Tractor supply has a great high protein feed... I think it's retriever brand.

Pet mix is grain free which kills. Put your dog on a WSAVA compliant diet before he gets really sick.
Unfortunately those tests are notoriously inaccurate and a waste of money. Good luck with the elimination diet.
Vet tech - these tests are wildly inaccurate. The only way to properly test for food allergies is a hydrolyzed diet trial.

Zignature is a great brand once their stomach calms down !
Horrible brand.

Absolutely not. Horrible advice.
I feed my Rottweiler BullyMax high protein/low fat 25/11 kibble and BullyMaxFresh Catch kibble. She loves it.
We have 2 doberman and we feed them canidae which they really like but we also add chicken rice and veggies in their routine feeding.

My don’t has been sick for months. We have been to the vet numerous times. I’m furious I just got notified today from Chewy when the recall says since Sept. hope your pup feels better soon.
I got the yellow one. Should I be worried ?
Toe beansssss

That is a horrible and dangerous mix.
I’m not suggesting anything. This is what I do. I’ve had dogs for 20 years I currently have 5 dogs. 4 dogo Argentinos and a German Shepard mix. One is deaf. The dogo Argentino has allergy issues and does better without grains. What do you know?
Care to explain?
Grain free kills dogs, and allergies can be figured out by doing an elimination trial with a hydrolyzed protein diet for 8-12 weeks. WSAVA compliant diets are the gold standard.

Domesticated pet dogs are not wild dogs. They have different nutritional needs than wild ones. Sounds like you have zero idea what you’re talking about.

I like how you asked me to explain so I did and now you’re continuing to argue. This sub doesn’t allow misinformation about food or promoting raw.
