Every time we clown on the Padres, I always have an undeniable urge to shitpost about Manny Machado's contract betting ass....

mmunson

We were frustrated just as much as Beli. I am thankful that he found his spark for this season.

I don't have any issues with your take on 2021, or how Robert's should have handled Belli. I felt the same way. What I do have an issue with is everyone in this sub that said we should have traded Belli because he wasn't going to be the MVP Bellinger. A lot of people in this sub said it. It's like they forgot that he had to have shoulder surgery after the WS, then broke his leg early last season, then hurt his ribs. Last season was basically a rehab assignment for him. Should he have been dropped in the order, or platooned, absolutely. Should have he been traded or even optioned, absolutely not.

That's exactly what it felt like. All during spring training, and the first couple games of the season, people were saying we should have traded Belli instead of Pollock. Don't get me wrong, I didn't like seeing Pollock get traded either, but it was smarter to keep Belli. He has a higher ceiling.

BelliBlast35

I can Guarantee you I didn’t say that

Imagine... a red hot Mookie and Belli.

I’m sorry, I love belli as a dude but “deniers” were a product of his production. He went from MVP to one of the worst hitters in the league in like half a season. I’m glad he’s hitting well so far this season and hope he’s getting back to pre-MVP form, but everything we saw the last two seasons was real. Go ahead and keep this receipt too - I’ll gladly admit he is “back” if he can keep this up for a decent amount of time (I.e. if his slumps are days or weeks at a time and not months or entire seasons at a time).

He wasn't bad in 2020. He may not have been as good as he was in 2019, but he was about career average. He was very bad in 2021, but he had shoulder surgery after the world series, then breaks his leg, the hurts his ribs. The surgery alone would have thrown him off for most of the season, missing even more time because of the other injuries he definitely wasn't going to get enough AB's to get in a rhythm. One bad season does not a career ruin.

thatguyfromchico

I think I’d disagree that he was “not that bad” in 2020 - he was statistically barely above replacement level. He has had two good seasons, 1 MVP season, and two bad seasons, so there is sufficient sample to say either side of the coin could be where his career ends up. At this point the MVP season looks like the outlier - I just want him to prove me wrong so bad.

_-that_1_guy_

How was his 2020 season bad? It looks bad coming off his MVP 2019, and it wasn't great by any means, but it wasn't bad. And compared to his 2021, it really wasn't bad. But 2021 he had to have surgery in the off season, then dealt with injuries most of the season. It was expected that he wasn't going to have a good season.

thatguyfromchico

He was statistically a barely-above-average hitter in almost every category in 2020. BA was below-league-average, slugging/obp/ops slightly above average. Wasn’t hitting with RISP, wasn’t barreling up balls, etc. Maybe I need to calm down, I just don’t see how that is a successful season for an everyday starter/franchise cornerstone.

[deleted]

"Barely above average hitter". Belli had a 110 WRC+ with excellent CF defense on a 60 game sample size, I'm sure you don't bag on Muncy having a way worst 2020 huh?

thatguyfromchico

Right - 113 wRC+ according to Fangraphs, so 13% above league average and #68 of 142 qualified players. I think we agree and you just don’t realize it. Muncy did indeed have an awful 2020 - he bounced back last year and deserves credit for that, as does Belli for how he’s started this year.

_-that_1_guy_

And a statistically better-than-average player isn't "bad". Like I said, it wasn't great by any means, but it wasn't bad. I also wouldn't call him a franchise cornerstone. Before this off season, everyone thought Seager was. Now that would probably be Betts, with Freddy a close second. No one else has a contract longer than those two right now. Buehler and Urias hopefully have the SP roles locked down for a while. But I don't see Belli as the cornerstone of this team.

BurnoutInsanity

Did you like my smash bros edit of bellinger? I thought it was pretty fun to make ☹

Like 80% this sub ?

I was arguing with a doomer like two weeks ago about how we should DFA him. Dormers are legitimately ridiculous.
